All traces of the Christmas season were erased from the block impacted by the Dec. 6 shoot. The normally festive shopping district was transformed overnight into a desolate urban wasteland, U.S. flags hanging from lamp posts and a tattered street banner replacing festive evergreen wreaths and glittering stars along the block.
Actors John Noble, Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson were easily spotted during the long hours the production spent filming outside in the drizzle before heading indoors to Dann’s Electronics for indoor scenes, part of a season four episode called “Welcome to Westfield”, airing in the new year. – See photo Page 11

Afternoon shift for helpers The army of volunteers with the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program will be assembling hampers next week. They’re busily working to prepare food hampers in time for Saturday, Dec. 17 – when hundreds of local recipients will be coming by the nerve centre inside the warehouse at Pacific Community Church, at 5337 180 St., to pick them up. Volunteer shifts are Dec. 12 to 16, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Anyone interested in lending a helping hand during those hours can find out more by calling 604-574-4001, Ext. 107, by emailing c l o v e rd a l e c h r i s t m a s hampers@gmail.com or by visiting www.cloverdalechristmashampers.wordpress.org. The locally-operated volunteer initiative distributed 225 food hampers last year, assisting 325 adults and 200 children in the community. It’s a non-denominational program that involves the combined efforts of local churches, schools, businesses, organizations and individuals.

Civic voting changes needed The current voting process is flawed and doesn’t give voters a proper choice on the ballot To the editor; Re: “The voters have spoken,” Dec. 1 The writer states that the voters have elected the very best people to move Surrey forward. In reality, this slate of developer shills is moving Surrey “forward” into a glorified version of the past. The “future” is going to be far different than anything you have experienced in your life – welcome to the “real” 21st Century! With this election, it is safe to say the “The Future Died Here”. At present, while the federal government is confounding the environmental conference at Durban, we can see that the environment is truly a local rather than national

on a ballot, especially in municipal elections, there must be a no vote on the ballot, actually two types of no votes. The first one, right across the top, must have a yes/no choice for the question – “do you support the present system of governance?”

and “no” box. In the candidates’ section (for each seat being contested), you are allowed one “yes” and one “no”. In such a system, I could vote “no” for the candidate that I most dislike (i.e. Mayor Watts) and then vote “Yes” for my real choice. The “no” votes would have to be deducted from that candidate’s “yes”

votes. If you vote “no” for the system of governance, then you have voiced your complaint against the present system and of course leave the candidate votes blank. Then for every contested seat where a candidate does not get a majority of the votes, there has to be a runoff election the following week until there is a majority winner. It is important to have the runoff elections – this is the best way to fix the “first-past-the-post” system. If these two improvements are implemented, then it would be possible to make voting compulsory. Robert McCroskey Port Kells

Cloverdale transit boost Rather than waiting for spring, TransLink is adding buses on busiest routes By Jeff Nagel TransLink will boost rush-hour bus service on selected routes starting Monday. Passengers from Cloverdale and Langley should see more buses and fewer full ones passing them by on the #320 Surrey Central/Langley and #502 Surrey Central/Aldergrove routes along Fraser Highway. Spokesman Drew Snider said the decision by area mayors and the province to increase the gas tax two cents a litre next April 1 allowed TransLink to add extra service now rather than waiting until next spring. “We know we’ve got that funding coming through next year,” he said.
More buses for routes that ‘sorely need it.’
“We were able to advance some of that from our reserves and push ahead with areas that sorely need it – some UPass routes and some of the routes in
the South-of-Fraser area.” Other routes getting more buses starting Dec. 5 include the #25 Brentwood Station, #84 UBC and #125 BCIT/Patterson Station runs. More morning trips will be added for the #410 22nd Street Station/Railway route, which connects Richmond, New Westminster and Surrey and has seen a large increase in ridership. Unlike some past shuffling of service from low ridership routes to higher-demand ones, Snider said this change is a net increase in service, not a rationalization. More increases are expected next April, Snider said.

Crowds swarm to parade By Jennifer Lang Clear skies and nottoo-chilly temperatures Sunday helped bring out a record turnout for this year’s Surrey Santa’s Parade of Lights. Organizers say the crowds were five-people deep throughout the parade route in the historic Cloverdale town centre – and beyond – putting attendance through the roof. One estimate put the crowd count as high as 25,000, a figure that included scores of spectators who lined up to watch the parade outside of its official route. Local RCMP said the parade drew at least 4,000 more spectators than last year, according to Bill Reid, executive director of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, which co-organizes the annual parade along with the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. “It was kind of hectic, but it was beautiful though,” Reid said Monday. “It was a perfect night. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.” The cold but-not-toocold Dec. 4 temperatures also helped draw hundreds of young families out to the evening event, even those with very small children and babies, who seemed delighted by the parade of lights.

A free late afternoon movie at the Clova Cinema, presented by Jim and Stephen Gammer as a client family appreciation event, which featured holiday-favourite, Christmas with the Kranks, also helped draw families into the town centre on Sunday. The movie got out just before the parade started, and movie-goers chose to stick around. Many of those who found parking at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre, at 62 Ave. and 176 St., chose to stay put rather than hiking to the parade route, Reid said. Participants also included local sports teams and clubs, churches, the Rotary Club of Cloverdale, the Surrey Square Wheelers Square Dance Club, Cloverdale Scouts and Guides, the Newton girls softball team, Shell and Francie Busey, Ronald McDonald, kids in their race cars, horses, and of course Santa himself, riding in a sleigh pulled by two Christmas lightgarlanded reindeer.

Cadillac convertible. The large turnout created some parking headaches for some. The TV production crew filming on location in Cloverdale this week took up about threequarters of the old Cloverdale Mall parking lot (between the bypass and 175 Street and 57 Ave. and 58 Ave.), forcing some to be creative with their parking plans. “It didn’t create any major issue,” Reid said. “People found places to park. For the two hours, it didn’t create a problem anywhere. We’ve had no complaints.” There were close to

This year’s provincial champions, the Cloverdale Atom Panthers, also won the VMFL championship.
A great season for Panthers extra points, including one from 15 yards away. Taran Birdi, Nathan Sawyer and Gage Mack were all very strong on defense. Last week the Panthers beat the North Surrey Lions 38-0 to become VMFL Champions. Season highlights: The Panthers were first in both the Maple Ridge and Cloverbowl pre-season tournaments, had a 10-0 record in regular season play, had a 5-0 playoff record and became the VMFL and provincial

They are very focused and dedicated players, learning both offensive and defensive positions. They played well as a team, and had great attitudes, listening and learning. Sixteen different players scored touchdowns throughout the season. The team played strong from the first to the last day.

They are an important part for the BC SPCA. of my family and our home just wouldn’t be the same without them. Right now, in SPCA branches across B.C., 4,000 beautiful, deserving animals are desperately waiting for a family to call their own. One of the biggest misconceptions about shelter animals is that they are somehow “damaged” or “second-class pets”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Animals are in shelters for the sole reason that their human companions couldn’t – or wouldn’t – take care of them. These smart, funny and affectionate animals have so much to offer and would love nothing more than to have a safe and happy home. During December, the BC SPCA is raising awareness about pet adoption through its Home for the Holidays adoption drive. Can I play my own movies if I buy a laptop? Yes, you can either download them from a safe site (Netflix) or use your own DVDs.
Can you print colour images from a black & white photo? Yes, you can (colourization) convert black & white photos into real life-like colour with BlackMagicshareware. This simple to use program is for PC’s only. It’s an adopted technique from re-colouring old motion pictures.
Q
A
How many windows can you have open on the Internet? This depends on the computer you’re using. If it’s new you can open many windows without slowing down your computer. However if your computer is older this is not recommended. You will notice its performance going downhill!
My child wants to play hockey but I don’t have the time right now and I don’t want to commit to that cost unless I am sure they will like it. What can I do?
Q A
How do I know if an instructor is qualified? A good Instructor like any educator must be properly trained in instruction through an accredited program. Having the rank of Black Belt means a certain physical skill but has no bearing on the ability to teach.
Game On will provide instruction for your child in skating and the basics of hockey. We will pick up your child at school and take them to the rink and back to our centre where you can pick them up after work. We will also instruct them off ice so they know if they like the sport or not BEFORE you commit the time and money for minor hockey. We offer this service for other sports as well and you can sign up for one course or get a membership!
At our school, instructors have to complete three levels of instructor training over a 3 to 5 year period to become certified as an instructor. The training consists of regular weekly training classes in instruction along with a minimum of 300 hours of practical instruction. Also each instructor candidate must attend three intense training camps where under the guidance of Master Instructors, they show their physical skill in martial arts, their skill in instruction and their knowledge of and ability to teach all required curriculum. At the camps, the instructor candidates are graded by a panel of Master Instructors to assure that they meet the highest quality standards before being officially certified to teach. My neighbour recently sold their house through MLS. I have a very similar home listed, but the folks who bought my neighbours house didn’t even look at mine. It is on MLS for the same price. Why is this? Each buyer has their own set of “must haves” when looking for their perfect home. Buyers can be quite particular about certain things such as parking, driveways, garage space and lot exposure. The list goes on. If your home is missing one of the features on their list, they probably won’t even consider looking at it. But don’t worry- there are other buyers out there with a different list of “must-haves” who will be very interested in your home.

Is there a natural eyedrop I can use for minor inflammation and irritation of the eyes? Oculoheel® Eyedrop contains homeopathic forms of chamomilla and euphrasia. It is used for early infections, minor inflammations, dryness, irritation, and allergies. Oculoheel does not contain preservatives and chemicals so it is contact lens compatible. Packaged in single dose vials, Oculoheel can be carried around easily. It may help when all else failed for stubborn conditions.

Why is Zion Lutheran School giving away 200 fabulous fresh cut Christmas trees to Cloverdale families this Saturday, Dec 10 at 3:00pm?
A
Zion Lutheran School is one of the best kept secrets in Cloverdale. Experience had shown that many people in the area immediately dismissed Zion as a potential school for their children because they assumed that the school is only for Lutherans or were unsure of what the word Zion was meant to refer to. As former student at Zion and board chairman, I can personally attest that while Zion has always strived to provide a safe, welcoming, and caring educational environment to children and families of all backgrounds. As a result, the school embarked on changing its name to something that truly and immediately speaks to who we are, what we do, and who we serve. This Saturday, Zion is having a ceremony unveiling the new name immediately followed by the Christmas tree gifting. I personally invite you and your families to attend this celebration, and receive your free fresh cut Christmas tree. The address is 5950 – 179th Street.
