Temporary home found for truck collection By Jennifer Lang Proponents of a heritage transportation centre have found a temporary home for a collection of vintage vehicles they want to bring back to Cloverdale. The City of Surrey has agreed to lend the Surrey Heritage Society a building on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds to house the new BC Heritage Transportation Centre. A memorandum of understanding is being worked out permitting the society to use
the old Surrey Museum building at 6050 176 Street (the northeast corner of 60 Avenue and 176 Street). The building was more recently home to the Cloverdale Seniors Centre until about a year ago. The society is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of heritage assets. Members want to relocate the Teamsters Freight Transportation Museum and Archives Collection from Port Coquitlam to Cloverdale. Many of the vehicles were on view here as

part of the former B.C. Transportation Museum until 1992. Society director Bill Reid said Unitow has offered to deliver the trucks. There’s 18 in all – 14 are completely restored. Many of the vehicles are from the King collection, named after the original collector, whose wife donated them to B.C. premier W.A.C. Bennett. A new door will have to be installed that’s large enough to accommodate the collection, which includes photos, license plates, tools,
and other memorabilia from the archives. Reid says the society hopes to broaden this initial collection in the future. Treasurer Paul Orazietti said the society will be meeting with the Teamsters to discuss the next steps to transfer the collection. The society is aiming to unofficially open the new centre by May 15, in time for the Cloverdale Rodeo. Volunteers will man the centre, opening Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to the end of August.

Hawaiian helpers A group of students from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary recently spent an afternoon at a Buddhist temple in Hawaii reassembling wooden lanterns for an upcoming special ceremony.
News in brief Oh, so close
The 15 Cloverdale students joined volunteers at the Shinnyo-En Hawaii Buddhist Temple as part of a week spent in Honolulu performing community service projects. According to the Honolulu StarAdvertiser, the day LTS students were there, volunteers put together 180 lanterns that will become part of the annual Memorial Day flotilla of wooden and artificial lanterns. The 14th annual Lantern Floating Hawaiian Ceremony takes place May 28. People from all over the world are invited to join in the ceremony honouring the dead. Participants gather at the water’s edge to see lanterns bearing lighted candles, messages and prayers for

Hillsdon said city officials made it clear they’re doing all they can to advocate for improvements, but their partners in senior levels of government aren’t budging. Crime was one area that wasn’t brought up as a priority – something he believes demonstrates the benefits of a community working together to address issues, and a model for how to proceed on other issues. “I think if we hold town hall meetings, people will have a greater opportunity to discuss these issues, form connections, and improve Cloverdale,” he said. Rapid residential growth was another hot topic. The latest Census figures show Clayton is booming. It’s home to 14,034 people – more than three times the
2006 count of 4,132 residents, boosting fears that Cloverdale’s needs are in danger of being eclipsed by its fastgrowing neighbour to the north. Cloverdale grew more modestly, but overall Surrey is the fastest-growing city in Metro Vancouver, with a population of nearly 470,000. The Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce went on record opposing any future Translink expansion of rapid transit that bypasses Cloverdale en route through Clayton to Langley. The current option bypasses the fairgrounds, the recreation centre, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus. “You’re bypassing areas of high destination and you’re going down
Get cooking, baking We’re getting lots of inquiries about the upcoming First Annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cookoff, one of the new attractions at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. More details are emerging about the cook off, presented by gourmet food store Well Seasoned at the fairgrounds May 19 and 20. The competition is open to both pros and amateurs. There’s $10,000 in prize money up for grabs. There are six categories in the cookoff: chicken, ribs, brisket, pork, battle pork, and the CASI Chili Cookoff. Entry fees apply. The Great B.C. Bake-off is also presented by Well Seasoned gourmet food store. Amateur bakers are welcome to enter all three categories: fruit pie, open, and butter tarts. The sessions wrap up May 7 in Fleetwood at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex.

Popular Postie on the move By Jennifer Lang Andy, downtown Cloverdale’s popular Postie, is moving to another route. Known for wearing shorts even on the coldest day and for his impish sense of humour, Andy has been a favourite with many office and business denizens. He’s delivered the mail to 102 businesses in the historic town centre for the past four years, and as many as 12 years on some streets. He’s been invited to office parties, swapped barbs, and kept everyone up-to-date on his training efforts: in addition to his delivery route, Andy is an avid long-distance runner who trains for marathons. “Everybody knows Andy by his first name and loves him,” recalled Robin Reum, former Cloverdale Reporter sales representative. ‘I ran into him in so many businesses and they all

ery routes, something that’s done periodically to reflect changes such as new residential and commercial developments. His new route is nearby (along 60 Avenue), but says he’ll miss working in the close-knit, historic downtown. He thoughtfully delivered the news of his impending departure, along with the day’s mail, two weeks ago, giving everyone time for the news to sink in. The great thing about Cloverdale, he said, is that it’s still a small town where people have time to talk. There was a sense of occasion along 176 and 176A streets for Andy’s final downtown shift April 12, when he was sent off with farewell gifts, hugs, smiles and even a ceremonial libation or two. Andy was headed to Boston for Monday’s marathon, followed by some vacation time before starting his new route. We’d like to welcome his replacement, Corina, who’s asking everyone to be patient; she’s still learning the route.

Student filmmakers earn kudos
EDITION
Contributed Classmates Adam Kleaman and Devan King of Clayton Heights Secondary have teamed up to make about 15 short films. One, Adult Beverage, is a finalist in two categories at Victoria’s EyeLens Film and Animation Festival. Adam Kleaman had to wash a lot of cars, mow a lot of lawns and save up a lot of birthday and Christmas money to buy his first video camera. But when the Clayton Heights Secondary student finally had the $700 he needed, washing cars and mowing lawns took a back seat to making movies. Adam immediately joined creative forces with classmate Devan King and they have since made about 15 short films. Adult Beverage is up for two nominations April 21: Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding Achievement in Youth Dramatic Filmmaking. The film follows the story of four young campers terrorized in the woods by a pair of chainsaw-wielding hillbilly brothers, complete with a twist at the end. “Usually, we’re in front of the camera, but this time we were 100 per cent behind it,” says Adam of the process. “It was the most fun we’ve ever had making a movie.” Just over seven minutes in length, the film was shot last summer on Galiano Island during a week-long course at the Gulf Islands Film & Television School (GIFTS). Adam and Devan wrote, produced, directed and edited their film with a student from Langley Fine Arts School. Adam and Devan, both 16 and in Grade 11, have been making movies together for the last couple of years and their chemistry is obvious. While they admit to sometimes having “creative differences,” a resolution usually follows some 30 minutes later, and the film is always better for the discussion. “We’re proud of what we’ve been able to do and we’re always learning, so we feel like we could really have something here,” says Devan.
This week marked the end of an era at Langley’s Twilight Drive-in. Metro Vancouver’s only drive-in converted from film to a digital projector on Tuesday. The final double feature shown in 35 mm was Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax and 21 Jump Street Sunday night. Movie-goers were given a commemorative strip of film as a souvenir. The Twilight at 260 and Fraser Highway becomes one of the first drive-ins in Canada to convert to digital projection, a vastly expensive proposition that can cost upwards of $150,000, but one that follows a nation-wide trend. The major movie studios still send film prints to theatres that haven’t made the switch, but insiders say it’s only a matter of time before they stop making film entirely. The Twilight selected to install a Christie CP2230, the brightest digital cinema projector available and ideally suited for large screens.

Transmission Servicing Q
How often should I get the automatic transmission fluid changed in my vehicle?
A
Changing the automatic transmission fluid and filter is important. It is also a good preventive maintenance item that can help prevent costly transmission repairs. The transmission is a complex but generally reliable component but also one of the most neglected. Transmission fluid is a lubricant and a coolant it helps combat oxidation, it keeps moving parts properly lubricated and helps dissipate heat that can cause transmission failure. To provide effective protection the transmission fluid and filter should be changed every 2 years or 48,000 km’s for normal driving conditions but never to exceed the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and sooner if you are towing or hauling with your vehicle.
