School hosts Vaisahki event Cloverdale Traditional School hosted its firstever Vaisakhi celebration last Friday. The event featured traditional dances, Gatka demonstrations and other activities. The celebration was a successful fundraiser for the school, raising about $8,100. The money will be used to purchase iPads for the students. Also last week was the annual Vaisakhi celebration in Surrey. Organizers say up to 200,000 participants turned out for the celebration and parade. Now in its 12th year, Surrey’s Sikh harvest-season festival, an event full of colour, food, music and prayer, is estimated to be the largest in the world outside of India. The event commemorates one of the most important religious dates on the Sikh calendar. It marks the harvest and new year, and the anniversary of the Khalsa.

Sad time for students The refrain ‘it’s about the kids’ rings hollow and just punishes kids These are not good times for those teachers who dedicate their time to sports teams, drama clubs and other important extracurricular school activities. It’s worse still, for the students who commit themselves to these pursuits, and in them, find true enjoyment and even scholastic benefit such as scholarships. Thanks to the BC Teachers’ Federation and its members who gave their voting support last week, the remainder of this school year is now a washout for thousands of young athletes and a wide variety of school clubs. After last week’s vote in support of the withdrawal of all extracurricular activities by teachers, even high school graduation and prom activities are in question. Parents may be able to step up and save the latter, without the participation by teachers.

the school year. Not enough can be said about the brave few who are willing to disregard the union ban, and keep running their extracurricular activities. Every teacher should have that choice, without influence from union or colleagues. After all, they’re volunteering, aren’t they? – Black Press

A toast to the Toasties Seventy-five per cent of us have a fear of public speaking. So you’d imagine Toastmasters – a club devoted to the art of public speaking – would have difficulty recruiting new members. Apparently not. For 13 years, the Cloverdale Toastmasters Club has been thriving, helping members develop their communication and leadership skills in a mutually-supportive and positive learning environment, fostering self-confidence and a sense of personal growth. Members practice prepared speeches and make brief, impromptu presentations, known as table topics. Members progress at their own pace. The Cloverdale club is the only one in B.C. to have earned Distinguished Club program status every year since its inception. The club’s success is based on its friendly atmosphere and humour, says Evelyn Hohman, vice president of public relations for Cloverdale Toastmasters Club 2651. The club meets Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Clayton Heights Secondary. Guests are welcome. Earlier this month, the club hosted the Spring Speech and Evaluation Contest for the region. For more information, visit their website: http:// cloverdale.toastmastersclubs.org.

Kia ora! Welcome to New Zealand – Land of the Long White Cloud. The Pinot Noir is plentiful, Frodo and a Lord of the Rings crew are tucked away in the hills making more magic, and I’m at The Rock, Wellington’s International Airport … being WOW’d by a fashion show. The show, a surprise highlight at an international press reception, features award winning designs from the World of WearableArt Awards Show held annually in Wellington. The actual WOW Gallery and Classic Cars Museum is in Nelson, on the South Island. How does one effectively describe elegant young women gliding down the runway encased in a sporty red... car chassis? Aptly named American Dream, described as “I’ll get my kicks on Route 66”, and constructed out of vinyl, leather, papier-mâché, builders’ foam and plastic designed by New Zealand’s Sarah Thomas, has the full attention of every guy in the airport conference hall. Slinking along behind is Hermecea, a lobsterlike lass playfully snapping major pincers at

the press. My program tells me she is “Crustacea dwelling on sea beds” designed by Jan Kerr out of handmade fabric, papier-mâché and wire. My practical daughter observed “I wouldn’t want to have to go to the bathroom wearing that!” The Greatest Show, billed as “A mysteriously dreamlike lady, unashamedly accompanied by a solo freak show”, spreads her skirts wide revealing a surprise picture show – drawing your eye away from the “mouse” on the cage around her neck. Wood, bird cage, fabric and paint forming this creation won the 2011 Shell Student Innovation Award for Sophie Littin of Wellington. Skin, designed from wool and silk by Canada’s Marjolein Dallinga, won the 2011 Geni Creative Excellent Section: Under the Microscope. “I’ve got you under & on my skin” is the description. I can almost feel blood gurgling and bubbling – sort of a human

Rotorua. Feminie Mettle, a US WOW 2011 Factor Award runner-up by Frank Strunk 111 intrigues me. Fashioned from copper, aluminum and steel, the result is “a stunning festive bustier; a dress with an industrial edge.” I’ll say! I’d seen previous award winning designs in the static display collection at the WOW Gallery, but viewing the innovative, intriguing wearable art modeled in living colour was a unique privilege. Days later, my Kiwi art education takes another giant leap. After swimming with a clearly joyful pod of frolicking dolphins (it was mating season!) in Queen Charlotte Sound, a little R & R is scheduled at Lochmara Lodge. Built in 1997 by former abalone diver Shayne Olsen and Louise Bright, the property has evolved from a backpacker’s

hideaway to a combination art and Marlborough Sounds Wild Life Recovery Centre. I panic slightly at the lack of TV, radio, or clock, in my rustic patio room… until opening the patio doors onto the view of the bay twinkling in the warm sun beyond the lemon tree. Suddenly, the world seems very far away. I like the feeling. Wandering up the hill past the lodge lounge decks I come across KuneKune pigs. I swear those placid porky critters never moved a muscle in two days. Rambling past the wildlife enclosures, I pick a hillside trails and am delighted to literally come face-to-face with random, playful art works blending into the lush hillside. Mythical faces carved into the sap of trees peer at me through See FACES / Page 7

the forest, framed ferns, and wooden rail headboards for the original cabins contrast with carved works secreted among the trees. “Don’t climb the dodgy corporate ladderâ€? warns the tongue-in cheek wooden sign. Nearby the “Stairway to Heavenâ€? indicates lichencovered stone stairs through the forest‌clearly for invisible forest folk. A wood carver’s shack – still used by the wood carver – sports not-so-mod-cons. A claw foot tub offers a panoramic Bay view. Closer inspection reveals a tongue-in-cheek note: “Wish you were hereâ€?. That reminds me, I’m booked for “a bathâ€?.

Locating a small hillside wood cabin, I open a side door expecting to find an attendant. Not a soul. Clearly I’m expected, though. Two steaming eucalyptus-scented baths, snowy towels, and bottled water await. I smile. It feels a bit like magic. Folding back double slatted doors, my personal tree house is completely private. Breezes play in the leaves. Birdsong – so noticeable everywhere in New Zealand – is the only music. I take the skinny dip plunge with pleasure. This is definitely my kind of magic. An hour later I reluctantly pad back past the lemon trees to my room. Fresh sea food is on the menu for a casual dinner. I have no idea what time it is. I

High flying auction will help fix roof By Jennifer Lang Organizers of a recent fundraiser for the Canadian Museum of Flight say they’ll be emptying their rain buckets and filling them with cash, thanks to a successful High Flyin’ Hawaiian Night. The aloha-themed event drew more than 150 people, and raised in excess of $25,000 for the society that runs the museum. Some of that cash will be used to fix the roof, says event coordinator Carla Deminchuk. The weather, she says, cooperated the night of the fundraiser: it was raining. Guests could see just how badly the hangar leaks. Rain buckets and water trays were spread throughout the venue. One doubled as a wishing well.

A scene from the Canadian Museum of Flight’s recent fundraising evening.

“The whole affair was rated as one of our best yet, and a sampling of the comments from the floor seemed to concur,” flight museum president Gord Wintrup said. Along with bidding on silent auction items, guests could buy mystery boxes. One attendee presented a box to one of the event’s bartenders as a tip. When she opened it, inside was a $1,400 diamond ring. The trip for two to Hawaii (including pineapple) went to the Lawsons, a couple from Langley. Several aircraft at the museum claim a Cloverdale connection. One, the Waco INF, a sport plane built in 1930, was the oldest flying airplane in western Canada until it fell into disrepair about eight years

ago. Volunteers hope to get it back in the air this year. Cloverdale residents may recognize it from the former B.C. Transportation Museum, which closed in 1992. Another Cloverdale legacy, a Douglas DC-3 known as The Spirit of the Skeena that was moved from Terrace, is now also at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley. It was built in 1940, and ended its flying career with Trans Provincial Airlines as a spare parts ship. The Canadian Flight Museum is run by a non-profit society that has a membership of about 400. There’s a core group of volunteers who help rebuild and maintain the planes. For more information, visit www. canadianflight.org.

Focus to help save your sight

Most of us know that UV rays from the sun can damage our skin, but few realize that those same rays can damage their eyes and lead to permanent vision loss – and fewer still know their children’s eyes are at risk too. “UV rays have a cumulative effect over time and can lead to eye diseases that can cause serious vision loss,” says Dr. Keith Gordon, Vice President of Research at CNIB. “CNIB has been carrying that message to Canadians for years –

Kids need to protect their eyes from UV damage too

One in seven Canadians will develop a serious eye disease in their lifetime, and while some eye conditions are unavoidable, others – such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, dry eye syndrome and eyelid disorders – can actually be prevented, slowed or suppressed by making healthier food and lifestyle choices. “Astonishingly, 75 per cent of vision loss can be prevented or treated,” says Dr. Keith Gordon, CNIB’s Vice President of Research. “Getting regular eye exams to detect eye disease early, making simple lifestyle changes to promote vision health and taking safety precautions to avoid eye injuries are all important.” Consuming eye-healthy foods, either on their own or in conjunction with other foods rich in protective nutrients, has been shown

to promote eye health and protect against preventable eye conditions. These nutrients and their food sources include: Omega-3s: Studies have shown that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids can lower the risk of AMD, the leading cause of vision loss in Canada. The most common sources for this nutrient can be found in flax seeds, walnuts, soybeans and fatty fish, such as salmon or mackerel. Beta-carotene: Beta-carotene, most commonly found in carrots, is a nutrient that the body converts into vitamin A and can offer protection against advanced AMD progression and cataracts when combined with other antioxidants. Lutein and zeaxanthin: Eating foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce the risk of both AMD and cataracts by protecting

against the oxidation of healthy tissue in the eye. Food sources include leafy greens and brightly coloured produce, such as squash, corn and orange peppers. Fiber: Foods that are higher in fiber also have a low glycemic index (GI) – a measure of how quickly carbohydrates raise blood glucose levels. Foods with a higher GI, such as white bread and potatoes, can increase the risk of AMD and cataracts; whereas low GI foods, such as oat bran, lentils, beans and barley, work to promote eye health.
