Big BBQ to heat up Rodeo Cowboy Cook-off, Dinotown are new 2012 additions By Jennifer Lang With just 43 days left to go, the countdown to the 2012 Cloverdale Rodeo has officially begun. Canada’s largest barbecue competition, a world freestyle skateboarding championships, and a visit from B.C.’s much-missed Dinotown theme park are just some of the new attractions in store, according to publicist Laura Ballance of LBMG. “There’s a lot of preparation underway. We think we’ve got a really strong lineup this year,” Ballance said, speaking after last week’s annual general meeting of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. The non-profit organization manages the rodeo and country fair, plus oversees the eight facilities at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds year-round. The 66th annual rodeo and 124th country fair, set for May 18 to 21, will again feature the traditional favourites – the invitational-format rodeo with Canadian and world champions, plus the long-running country fair, kids zone, agri zone, midway, and outdoor entertainment stage – along with several new events, starting with the first annual Cloverdale Cowboy Cook Off. Langley food maven and barbecue
queen Angie Quaale, head cook and pitmaster of her own competition team, will oversee the two-day event and help enforce the rules. “We think it is going to be a lot of fun,” Ballance said. There’s $10,000 in prize money up for grabs, and amateurs will be able to enter, so get cooking. Amateurs and pros will also compete for $10,000 in prize money at another new event, the four-day World Freestyle Skateboard Roundup. The fair also features a preview of an attraction that will spending the summer at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds – Dinotown Live, a reloaded version of the cartoon dinosaur town theme park that closed in 2010. The attraction itself opens June 25 and runs to Sept. 3, and will feature a live show, along with dinosaur education and inflatable fun. A vintage hot rod show is another new addition, rounding out the list of attractions designed to appeal to traditionalists and newbies alike, and, like the BBQ and boarding contests, included with the price of admission to the country fair. Bose farm to be rebuilt By Kevin Diakiw The City of Surrey’s heritage watchdog has approved a plan to develop the historic Bose Farm, which is home to the oldest buildings in the city. In February, the Heritage Advisory Commission (HAC) reviewed a plan by Rempel Development Group to build 80 single family dwellings
on the property at 16420 64 Ave. The plan includes rezoning the property from agricultural to residential for up to 15 units per acre. The development scheme also calls for the rescue of three heritage buildings on the property, including the Henry Bose Farmhouse, the calf barn and the milk cooling
shed. All are about 120 years old. Due to the precarious condition of the farmhouse, the builder will be pulling it down and rebuilding it, using historically accurate materials. The commission liked the concept and that the developer was “heritage friendly.”

Clayton Heights gets real By Jennifer Lang With a name like Reality Week, it’s a sure bet students at Clayton Heights Secondary will be learning about life beyond the classroom. Members of the school’s socially-conscious Project Equal club along with teacher/sponsors Sarah Daintrey, Lara Hayward and AnneMarie Miranda, planned the event, which runs April 10 to 13 and features a different theme each day. Classes sign up for different guest speakers, activities and films. This year, topics include the environment, distracted driving, mental health and peer support, and making the world a better place. Presenters include Olympian Margaret Langford,
the “Drop it and Drive” drivers’ safety team, a scientist from SFU and more. Later this month, the club is organizing a 36-hour famine.

pull together to host one of the largest annual events of its size in the country and one of the top rodeos in North America. Ken Kachur, a longtime Cloverdale Rodeo volunteer was recognized last week for more than 20 years of dedicated service. Kachur, who stepped down from his position as treasurer, was considered an integral part of the association, even acting as an interim general manager on a volunteer basis in 2010. Four other longserving volunteers were named Lifetime Members of the association: past rodeo chair and volunteer Rocky Rockwell, Florian Kirner, who volunteered for more than two decades, serving as a member of the board of directors and chair of the country fair committee, and Ernie and Charlene Bayer, who have also volunteered for more than two decades. “The strength of this association is largely because of the dedication of our volunteers,” president Shannon Claypool
said. “These four long serving members are extremely worthy of this honour.” Two incumbents – Rob Marshall and Gerry Spielmacher – were reelected to the board of directors for 2012 at the March 27 AGM. Longtime volunteer Jenece Steinson was elected to the board for the first time.

Arborist dismayed by removal To the editor; Re: “Cherry trees come down,” March 22 Returning home from an arborist conference in Parksville last Friday, I was dismayed to read the article ‘Cherry Trees Come Down’ on the front page of the Cloverdale Reporter. It’s so disappointing that 10 beautiful mature cherry trees have been chopped to the ground to satisfy the wants of a small group of people. The residents of the area considered those trees to be Clayton Park’s crowning glory. And even more than being beautiful to behold, those trees offered other important benefits both to the ecology and the community – for humans, they exhale oxygen, sequester carbon, provide shade and buffer noise, and for the rest of the ecology, they provide food, shelter and habitat. It’s no wonder that people form strong attachments to trees, as Ina Vandeburgt did. Well, way to go Ina, you stuck up for a tree! I will share with you a message I came home with from my conference, “Save every tree you can, even if it’s just one.” Jacqueline Hohmann Certified Arborist and Landscape Technician Surrey
JIM FOULKES PHOTO
Local resident Jim Foulkes was also disappointed by the city’s recent decision – at the request of the Surrey Lawn Bowling Club – to remove healthy cherry trees growing next to the bowling green at Clayton Park, pictured above. He says installing a simple trencher panel of plastic along the field would have eliminated the possibility of roots reaching the fence around the green. Foulkes is a former member of Surrey’s Heritage Advisory Commission and current director of the Surrey Historical Society.
To the editor; Getting rid of the penny – this is what happens when ignorant people are in charge. You either remove that second decimal place in the currency or not, you can’t have it both ways: no penny but retain the second decimal place. Just take off that second decimal place and eliminate all the coins that use that place, which includes pennies, nickels and quarters.
Penny pinch makes dollars and dimes – but no sense

And of course, prices such as 141.4 cents per litre of gas have always been absurd, so that would change to $1.4 per litre, all those extra decimal points violate the rules for significant figures. When gas was 17.9 cents per gallon, that might have been a significant figure for that last decimal place, but not any more.

That leaves you with just dollars and dimes, and if you want another coin, add back the half-dollar – note I didn’t say 50-cent piece. Then all prices would be on dollar-dime basis: $12.8 for example (12 dollars, eight dimes). You no longer call things by “cents” so it is eight dimes not 80 cents. Anything priced below eight dimes is HST exempt, since the first dime of HST does not kick in until the eight-dime price level.

Dead people don’t come back to life. We don’t need modern science to tell us that dead people stay dead. Everyone knew that 2000 years ago. Yet, at Easter, Christians around the world celebrate the resurrection, the coming back to life, of a man. Not only will they celebrate the resurrection of this man Jesus, they will also worship Him as God. Why? Jesus sacriďŹ ced himself because of the rebellion that dwells within our hearts. We all want to be the masters of our own destinies, rather than submit to God’s good guidance. For those who insist, God grants their wish until they are permanently estranged from Him in hopeless death. But God doesn’t leave it there. He walked among us in the man Jesus Christ. He allowed himself to be humiliated, nailed to a cross, and die‌ for you, if you accept God as your leader. Because God Himself, in Jesus, suffered the death penalty as punishment for rebellion, you can have eternal life, rather than eternal death. Coming back to life, to live in the presence of God, is the ďŹ nal hope of those who follow Jesus. Two thousand years ago, Jesus defeated death and came back to life. Neighbourhood Bible Study “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be savedâ€? from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays (Romans 10:9). In addition to spring crafts, holiday games and an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt, there will be an array of local wildlife rescue groups on hand, teaching young visitors about the “Real” Easter Bunny and other critters. The annual event is a chance for families to learn about local wildlife and rescue animals, from bunnies to iguanas, and pups to parrots. “People should adopt instead of shop,” says Delta’s Jennifer Kaiser, from Without Borders Boxer Rescue, who adds by rescuing, you save a life and do your part in combating overpopulation. “There are far more homeless dogs than there are dogs in loving homes,” Kaiser says. Q A
We operate a small home-based business, what is an easy way to keep track of our business related expenses?
Edith Katronis
Q A
I’ve found that the easiest way to keep track of your expenses is to track them in about 20 large envelopes. Label each envelope with an expense category such as advertising, meals & entertainment, utilities, gas, insurance, miscellaneous, etc. Keep these envelopes in a secure and convenient location, and at the end of each day put your daily receipts into the appropriate envelope.
#1 CLOVERDALE HOMELIFE BENCHMARK REALTOR
What is a good age to start training in Martial Arts? Almost any age! For preschool children a positive, fun learning environment balanced with structure and discipline builds confidence, focus and concentration for success in the upcoming school years. The physical training aids development of coordination, strength, and flexibility and provides an outlet for some of that excess energy.
Q
What are some simple and inexpensive things I can do to keep my home looking fresh and increase the value of my home?
A
There are many things you can do to maintain and even increase the value of your home. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders to the interior of your home and doesn’t cost much. Maintaining the exterior is also very importantmake sure your windows are spotless, power wash your sidewalks, keep the gutters clean and free of debris and keep the drain tiles flushed. Adding a few plants or flowers is also a nice way to freshen up the look of your house and add curb appeal. A privacy hedge is also a wonderful idea, and can also increase the value of your property up to 2.5%.
For older children the element of competition motivates them to reach their personal best. Each student achieves successes such as learning a new move, improving a technique, breaking a board or earning a new belt rank which helps build confidence on their path toward larger goals. This confidence provides success in other areas such as school or other sports.
At the end of the year, simply add up the receipts contained in each of the envelopes and staple the adding machine tape to outside of the envelope. You will then have all your expenses categorized and supported should the Canada Revenue Agency wish to review them.
Adults find that Martial Arts is excellent for fitness, stress relief, confidence and is lots of fun. They enjoy the social atmosphere that results from sharing the challenges and accomplishments with fellow students.
You should also have separate envelopes for equipment purchases, banking and loan records, and credit card statements.
At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy many adults join to share the positive experience with their children often attending tournaments together so that they can cheer each other on.

Full day vs Half day Preschool, Which is better? Children who attend an extended-day preschool program experience greater improvement in test scores compared to peers who attend half-day programs. The difference in performance gains over time was evident for measures of both verbal and mathematic abilities. These results indicate that duration is an important consideration for the effectiveness of preschool education. Common sense and other research suggests that increased time in the classroom yields better results because it provides greater opportunity for teachers to work individually with students and allows for a more relaxing atmosphere with less time proportionately spent on routines such as meals, tying shoelaces and hand washing. is a teacher-researcher, a resource and guide as she/he lends expertise to children. Programs in Reggio are family centered. Loris’s vision of an “education based on relationships” focuses on each child in relation to others and seeks to activate and support children’s reciprocal relationships with other children, family, teachers, society, and the environment.
What makes the Reggio Emilia approach stand out is that it articulates children to acquire skills of critical thinking and collaboration. At Kidzrock we believe in giving your child the best childcare/preschool experience imaginable.

Another option is the Omega Meal Organic Hemp Protein Powder which is flavoured with blueberries and vanilla bean, and provides 13 g. of protein and 5 g. of essential fatty acids per 45 g. serving. This is a children’s favorite. The Omega Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder is another tasty option that is unsweetened and unflavoured, and provides 10 g. of protein per 15 g. serving. (HpGL deciphers it into graphics but the newer printers no longer have the hpGL code) Unfortunately this is an older program and I want to upgrade my printer. Any suggestions before I go out and buy 2nd hand or a used older laser printer to run my program? You need to convert the data file from the rapid transit program to a PDF file, which any modern printer can understand. There are currently programs available over the Internet that can do the conversion. Let this be a lesson to us all on the importance of ‘file extensions’!
