Rising to the challenge Clayton Heights claims two in a row at the provincials For the second year in a row, the Clayton Heights Senior Girls Volleyball team has won a bronze medal at the AAA B.C. provincial championships. “It is an amazing accomplishment to medal two years in a row at the senior level,” their coach Gordon Houchen said. The Night Riders had a strong regular season with a 7-win, 1 loss record in league play. They also participated in several tournaments, including the Fraser Valley championships, where Clayton Heights took silver, defeating Rick Hansen and MEI before falling to Seaquam in the final, three games to one. Rachel Proctor and Tonya Gulbrandsen were named Fraser Valley All-Stars. At the provincials in Parksville, Clayton started fast by pounding the ball from everywhere and anywhere
to defeat Nanaimo 2-1 (25-9, 25-20), and Langley’s Brookswood 2-0 (25-7, 25-22). The fifth-ranked Night Riders then faced the number three-ranked Little Flower Academy from Vancouver, upsetting them 2-0, and placing the team first in their pool. Clayton’s hitting attack and strong defense seemed to intimate and frustrate LFA, Houchen said. Clayton defeated the Vernon Panthers 2-0 in the first round of elimination playoff action, and then in the quarter finals went up against their Fraser Valley rivals, the MEI Eagles in a best of five match. Great hitting by Breanna Evoy, Gulbrandsen, Proctor and Maddy Power led Clayton to victory, as the Eagles’ defence couldn’t deal with their powerful attack. It was one of their best matches of the season, winning three See THIRD STRAIGHT TRIP / Page 6

Amber Lancaster is the first female driver at Fraser Downs since 2005.
By Jennifer Lang Last Friday was a big night for Amber Lancaster, who made her long hoped-for harness racing debut at Fraser Downs Racetrack, driving in three races. Her professional debut is a dream come true for Lancaster, 22, who’s worked in the backstretch since she was a girl, first paying her dues as a groom mucking out stables and more recently as a trainer, which she earned after completing a grueling twoyear program. She finally gained driver’s approval from a panel of judges, after completing a series of qualifying races. It’s a sure bet her Fraser Downs family was cheering her on Dec. 9 as she made her debut as a professional driver on her home track, becoming the first female driver at

Schools to be reimbursed for equipment bought with PAC funds By Jennifer Lang Two local schools will be reimbursed for money their Parent Advisory Councils spent on new playground equipment this year. Cloverdale Traditional School’s PAC is to be reimbursed for $24,283, as part of $2.4 million in provincial funding announced last week to acknowledge money its PAC raised to purchase playground equipment. Another Cloverdale school, Don Christian Elementary, will receive a $43,820 playground reimbursement.
The money is part of $8 million in new playground funding announced by Premier Christy Clark in September that will be spent over two years. School districts were asked to identify schools that had purchased adventure-style playground equipment using PACraised funds since Jan. 1, 2011. PACs at 14 Surrey area schools are to receive a total of $347,025 in reimbursements for playgrounds. In September, two new area schools – Adams Road Elementary and Hazelgrove Elementary – learned they would each get

$50,000 from the province for playgrounds. Adams Road opened earlier this year, but didn’t have a playground because the money wasn’t included in capital funds. The next phase of the playground program will involve about $3.6 million to be distributed for high-priority playground upgrades, repairs and replacements. The government’s original announcement also said from now on, playground funding would be included in capital budgets for new schools.

A time to give Our contributions can truly make a difference in the lives of Surrey families in need To the editor; As we’re all getting ready to put up our Christmas trees and light up the house with fancy lights and decorations, let’s just take some time to give some thought to the families who are lacking food, shelter and support. Christmas is a time to love and a time to give, so let’s put in some effort and donate to local food drives in the community as well as school food drives. As a Grade 10 student of Fleetwood Park Secondary, I’ve seen my school do exceptionally well in terms of gathering nonperishable food items to donate for those who don’t have as much as we do. This year my school is aiming to gather 2,012 canned goods since 2012 is around the corner. I am positive we will reach our goal with everyone’s input. Another way to help is by taking part in the “Sponsor A Fam-

ily” program by sponsoring a family that has a low income. This will help make a difference in the lives of many people. You will be paired up with a family and given their “wish list” and shop for the items they wish for to deliver the hamper to the family awaiting. I personally love this program
The Cloverdale
because I have participated in it with my school before. So in our Christmas spirits, let’s get out there and make sure everyone celebrates this wonderful holiday having just as much fun as we do. Let’s help fill the stockings of the little ones whose parents cannot afford to give their
children expensive Christmas gifts and cherish the holidays. Those in need will feel loved and comforted. When we all donate just one canned or nonperishable food item, we will have helped a numerous amount of needy people. Donate to the Surrey Food Bank or if your child is having a food drive at school, please try to donate at least one item. Believe it or not, our contributions will really help those who want to celebrate this joyful holiday. Keep the saying in mind “Christmas is a holiday that persecutes the lonely, the frayed, and the rejected”. Make a difference this holiday season and with everyone’s assistance, let’s hope everyone including the ones in need have a very Merry Christmas this year! Navi Dosanjh, 15 Surrey

straight games 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20). The semi-finals against Crofton House turned into a battle that lasted more than two hours. The Night Riders played hard, but lost three games to two (25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 9-15.) Power hitters Evoy and Proctor stood out for Clayton in a losing cause in the bronze medal match, when Clayton came up with a strong effort in the final match to sweep McRoberts of Richmond 2-0 (25-16-25-18). Undergrads Carlene Clarke, Taylore Duhamel, and Tess Frey made strong contributions to an awesome, all-around team effort. It was Clayton’s third straight trip to the provincial volleyball championships, where they have finished sixth, third and third, each year finishing higher than their provincial ranking and putting in a lot of miles travelling. Four Night Rider seniors have played in all three provincial tournaments: Evoy, Gulbrandsen, Proctor and Tori Trim. “These girls’ ability to rise to the challenge and play their best volleyball of the season at the provincial championships each year has been amazing, and something they should be very proud of,” Houchen said. The Clayton Heights senior girls have amassed a 15 wins, 5 loss record at the provincials over the past three years. Captain Breanna Evoy was named a first team all-star, and Tonya Gulbrandsen was named a second team all-star. The other graduating senior and setter, April Davies, also had a very strong tournament for the Night Riders.

Jail sought for asbestos violator

Contractor recruited teens as young as 14 to work without protection

When children are exposed to inspiring stories of athletes, they begin to imagine what they can do and how they too can make a difference.
By Tricia Leslie A WorkSafe BC lawyer is seeking a jail sentence of six months to a year for a notorious demolition contractor who repeatedly exposed his unprotected workers to asbestos contamination. Last year, Arthur Moore defied repeated orders from WorkSafe BC and then continued his Surrey-based asbestos and drywall removal business in violation of a B.C. Supreme Court injunction granted last August that indefinitely barred him from operating. He was found in contempt of court. “Asbestos kills. It was the leading killer of workers in British Columbia in 2009, responsible for 44 per cent of deaths arising from employment, said Scott Nielsen, who is representing WorkSafe BC in the case.
Nielsen asked the judge to consider weighing Moore’s sentence against the possibility that his contempt could result in the “eventual death of those he knowingly exposed to asbestos. WorkSafe BC inspectors found that Moore used teenagers as young as 14 to demolish asbestos-laden houses without providing them with any protection. He recruited young students in need of cash and hired recovering addicts from recovery houses in Surrey. According to court evidence, Moore quoted low rates to demolish old houses – a fraction of the price charged by competitors who take required safety precautions when dealing with asbestos. He claimed to take samples and get reports certifying buildings asbestos-free before demoli-

Past employees testified they were told to “run away if WorkSafe BC officers showed up at a work site. Moore operated at least 15 job sites in Surrey, Richmond and Delta last fall, using names including Tri City Hazmat, Surrey Hazmat and Effective Contracting to skirt the injunction, according to court evidence. He did not show up in court to defend himself at either the 2010 injunction hearing or the contempt proceedings. Repeated attempts to contact Moore have been unsuccessful. Moore will be sentenced Jan. 24 for contempt of court.

Cloverdale RCMP grow the distance By Jennifer Lang Movember came to an end in a lighthearted, if slightly hairy fashion at the Cloverdale Legion. That’s where eight male RCMP members from the Cloverdale community (and one female Staff Sgt., but more on her later) paraded their mo’s past a panel of judges. MacMillan, Tucker and MacKay law firm established the categories and provided three judges from the firm, who wore formal black courtroom robes. The neighbourood liaison team spent 30 days growing facial hair where none had been allowed to flourish previously, earning the wrath of spouses and courting trouble from superiors should the moustache line exceed regulation length. There were prizes awarded for best, (Cst. Jean Bissonnette), worst (Special Cst. Rocky Prakash), most creative/original (Cst. Jeff McMichael), most disturbing/pathetic (Cst. Albert Luk) and the WiskeriIt was a slice. na Prize went to Staff/Sgt. Shirley Steele, who gamely joined the contest, slapping on a fairly convincing fake moustache at the time of judging. Apart from Steele, each participant said they planned to shave their ‘staches immediately following the Nov. 30 event. A total of $1,055 was raised from local members, and community members who attended the event, held in conjunction with the Surrey RCMP bake sale. The cake, made by a Surrey RCMP employee, brought in $225, thanks to a bid from Art Doyle and David McBeath of National Home Warranty in Cloverdale. The bid was matched by the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce. Money raised went to a Surrey detachment member whose wife is undergoing four cancer treatments in Singapore that are not available in Canada and cost $20,000 each. Movember, a moustache-growing charity event where men grow, show and connect with one another, traditionally helps raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.

I need daycare for my child but also want them to experience the education and structure of preschool. Can I do both?
There are few, if any daycares that will drive your child to preschool and many preschool programs are extra in daycare. At KidZrock, your preschool program is included in your daycare fees. Your child will not only benefit from the creative play of daycare, but also have the increased structure and education of preschool for those hours of the day. We of course offer preschool outside of daycare, with varying rates according to how often your child attends. New at KidZrock this year is skating lessons for daycare and preschool! this joins our already full program of art, games, field trips and more! Q
Why dental implants for denture wearers?
A
Loose dentures can be remedied with the addition of dental implants that anchor to the bone. Denturists are able to fit dentures over implants to provide stability and increased chewing force. Other benefits of implantretained dentures are: - Use of pastes and adhesives eliminated. - No more food particles under dentures. - improves function by 90% - reduced tissue irritation - increased preservation of bone - improved confidence

I have been told that core stability is important in the prevention and treatment of back pain. Is this correct? Core stability describes the deep muscles of the stomach and back which provide a corset ring of support that stabilizes the spine in the correct position. The core muscles function to provide a stable framework of support from which movement can take place. Whether you are working above your head (painting), lifting heavy boxes or simply working on the computer the core stabilizers function to provide support and maintain the spine in the mid-line position. Poor recruitment (contraction) of the core muscles will result in increased compensatory stress in the back. The great advantage of training the core muscles is that you can do it while working, sitting and standing i.e. in any postural position. It is important to get professional instruction regarding correct technique and safe progression of exercise. A Physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help to relieve the pain.
