Is Santa real?

A Cloverdale father wrestles with a delicate question “I apologize in not replying sooner but the elves and I have been very busy making toys for all the young boys and girls.” – S. C. By Keith Mah hen my daughter Carolyn was seven years old, she asked, “Daddy, Is Santa Claus real? My friends say Santa’s not real.” I said, “Of course Santa is real! How do you think those presents got under the Christmas tree?” A year later my daughter – a wiser and more cynical 8 year old now – said, “Daddy, There is no Santa. All my friends say he doesn’t exist.” A stronger response was clearly needed, and forewarned is forearmed; our annual Christmas party at my school, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, gave me the perfect opportunity. I took Carolyn to see Santa, and also asked her to write Santa a letter. Here is what she wrote:

I love you and my parents! Do you remember me from last year? My Dad is Keith Mah. You gave me Enchanted Forest Stickers. P.S. My Daddy made me write this other letter. A week later, Carolyn found this letter from Santa under the Christmas tree:

n the first years of my married life, it was our tradition to buy one holiday decoration every Christmas. The first year, pre-kids, we purchased an inexpensive box of tiny, ornate wooden ornaments. Each one, be it a baby angel with paper thin wings, or a small Christmas tree, elf, or star, was painted white, detailed with gold and silver, with only the smallest bit of black for eyes and such. They are still my favourite store bought whimsies. Year two we purchased a myriad of small foil Christmas balls in bright reds, blues, greens, silvers, and gold – and a baby’s first Christmas ornament! Year three’s addition was very special – we

Finally, if you see any suspicious person or activity near a vehicle, call the Surrey RCMP non-emergency line at 604-5990502. If you witness a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.

• RCMP recommend at least one anti-theft device, particularly a passive immobilizer. They deter thieves because they don’t want to waste time or energy trying to remove them. They also work as a visual deterrent. • Don’t leave anything inside your vehicle. Take your possessions with you or leave them at home, otherwise lock them in the trunk, out of sight – something that should be done before you travel to your next destination. “Thieves are watching,” Chattell writes. “Putting items

There were 137 false alarms reported during November, along with 26 vehicle thefts, 35 reports of thefts from vehicle, four shoplifting incidents and six credit/debt card fraud reports. It’s the last local Business Link newsletter by Crime Prevention Programs coordinator Carrie Chattell; in 2012 the Surrey RCMP will be creating a Surrey-wide newsletter for all businesses.

‘Wow! What a day’ More than 240 local families provided with food hampers By Jennifer Lang There’s been an outpouring of community support this year for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program. More than 240 families were provided with hampers, and the volunteer turnout for the assembly line at Pacific Community Church was overwhelming, Kevin Lunder, program lead along with wife Trish, said Monday. “Wow, what a day!” Lunder said, adding everything ran smoothly. It’s the first year the Lunders have been in charge of the program, now in its 20th year in operation. More than 700 boxes over two cubic feet in size were filled. Contents included a turkey or ham, milk products and a couple of weeks’ worth of non-perishable food items. Also dis-

tributed were 100 gift cards for youth and toys for 190 children. “The community really pulled together,” Lunder said of the nondenominational program, which operates thanks to the generosity and drive of local businesses, organizations, schools, and the Cloverdale community at large. Lunder was impressed by the quality and sheer amount of new toy and clothing donations that came in this year, collected or donated by businesses and schools. Students at Clayton Heights Secondary made good on their pledge to collect 10,000 items for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program. The students also collected $1,000 in cash for the program during the school’s 11th annual Christmas food drive on behalf of the program.

A snowy owl rests on a tree stump on Boundary Bay during a stopover on its Pacific Flyway migration route. According to the Surrey-based Hancock Wildlife Foundation, snowy owls usually live and breed in Alaska and Yukon, but they’ve flown south – with reports as faraway as Illinois and Honolulu – because their food supply of lemmings was lacking.

When Christians Consent law wanted forget about Christ Do abortion-seekers really know what they’re doing?

Ironically, the atheists I’ve met have more compassion To the editor, While so many argue over what to call ‘Christmas,’ the far greater question should be asked: Why are the compassionate teachings of Christ so frequently left out of the ‘Christmas’ discussion/debate. (And, no, I’m far from being ‘Christ-like,’ although I usuallyunsuccessfully aspire to be.) Thus, whenever the Christmas month of December comes around, a plethora of people are suddenly motivated to give; though, soon enough, it will basically be back to ‘business as usual’ for the following 11-or-so months of the year. Even worse are all of the Canadian (but also U.S.) politicians who, especially at Christ-

To the editor mas time, proclaim their ‘strong faith in Christianity,’ yet ironically tend to be the least compassionate/Christ-like people of all; and again ironically, most of the (atheistic) secular-humanists I’ve encountered over the years seemingly would make far better Christians through their compassion for humanity than do too many ‘practicing Christians.’ Frank G. To the editor; Why do over 100,000 Canadian women have an abortion every year? Is it just because it is the easy way out of situations? Do they really know what they are doing? In the United States of America they have “informed consent laws”, which are procedures you would have to go through before you have an abortion, telling you exactly what is going to happen. In Canada there are no laws before you have your abortion. In 2008, a poll conducted by Environics Research Group investigated Canadian attitudes concerning life issues. In the outcome of this poll, it shows that 65 per cent of Canadians think that there should be informed consent laws before having an abortion. Now it is 2011, and even though a majority of Canadians are in favour of having these laws established, babies are still being aborted without their moms knowing all the information about what is happening to them. I think that if women knew exactly what was going to happen, there would be a lot less than 100,000 abortions every year. Kaitlyn Schouten, age 14 Surrey

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so. Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? The response: Dear Virginia, Your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s,

are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him‌ Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus‌ Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of

course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! The letter trick worked well on an 8 year old; unfortunately, I don’t think it will work this year – a 10-year-old is only a few blinks away from being a know-it-all teenager. When she asks about Santa this year, what am I going to say? I don’t know. I’ll just have to pile lots of presents under the Christmas tree and be sure to give her a big hug. – Keith Mah is an instructor at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale.

store-bought additions. I love these ornaments from years gone by – when the kids were small – best. It doesn’t matter if they’re torn or a bit worn, or if the sparkle is fading or an edge a bit crumpled. As I pull them out one by one from the boxes we’ve accumulated, memories flood back, strong as the scent of cinnamon. A red-clay dinosaur, decked out in red and green glitter, joins a host of handcrafted angels. There’s a small clay dog about the size of half my pinky that frolics near similarly rolled and cut-out gingerbread people, a teddy bear, stars and wreathes. A juice can top picture frame stars my son at four, topped with a red ribbon so it can hang and look pretty. Little puzzle piece reindeer sport my children’s names and Rudolph’s nose. And it’s not just memories of the SURREY ARCHIVES kids our collection triggers. My little sister gave my husband and me a box of homemade Christmas ornaments one year early in our marriage: pasta angels with the cutest heads of tiny-crinkly noodle hair, little satin balls, and paper drums. I can’t look at them without smiling. A family of snowmen, labelled with our names, brings my sister-in-law’s face to mind. An origami crane, a cross-stitched card, and similar intricate gifts make my friend Allison flutter into my head. The Christmas boxes have the same power

over the rest of my family as they do over me, and listening to them chatter about this memory and that as they unpack things makes me happy that I’ve never weeded out our collection. Even the things too beaten up to make it on the tree bring happy squeals. Stuff is just stuff and I’m usually quick to dismiss it, but in the case of Christmas trinkets, I admit my weak spot. I love the memories sparkling in their shiny surfaces and folded into their fabric. I hope you experience peace, laughter, and joy this holiday – all things found easily stashed and stored around your home. Merry Christmas! – Ev Bishop lives and writes in Terrace, B.C. ASH B LIVE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG!

Why “boxing” day? Boxing Day is a holiday in Canada. The origin of this holiday’s name is not clear. In feudal times in the United Kingdom, the lord of the manor would ‘pay’ people who worked on his land in the past year with boxed practical goods, such as agricultural tools, food and cloth. These were often distributed on the day after Christmas Day. More recently, employers traditionally gave their servants a gift of money or food in a small box on the day after Christmas Day. Some people in Canada still give gifts to people who provide them with services. Other stories relate to servants being allowed to take a portion of the food left over from the Christmas celebrations in a box to their families and the distribution of alms from the church collection boxes to poor parishioners. These traditions evolved into the Christmas baskets that some employers distribute to their employees during the holiday season at the end of the year.

Vancouver Christmas Market A 700-year tradition that debuted in 2010 – a German-style Christmas market – is back, and has just welcomed its 100,000th visitor. The Vancouver Christmas Market aims to capture the same festive village market atmosphere that’s been a tradition for centuries in Germany. Billed as much more than a craft fair, the Vancouver Christmas Market at the Plaza at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 650 Hamilton Street, is open to Dec. 24, offering a blend of shopping, music, and seasonal food and drink. Stroll an outdoor Christmas village featuring rows of wooden huts selling handmade gifts and treats. Enjoy carolers, trumpeters and bells, plus thousands of Christmas lights sparkling. This year, there will be performances by dozens of choirs, folks bands and more, including Langley’s world famous Ukulele Ensemble, and legendary swing band leader, Dal Richards Big Band. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Seasonal viewing The Knowledge Network presents A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Friday, Dec. 23 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 10:30 p.m. It’s Christmas Eve and the anticipation of the next day will not allow young Thomas to sleep. Stirred by his grandson’s enthusiasm, old Geraint relates his touching memories of a Christmas gone by. Based on the classic Dylan Thomas poem. That’s followed by A Tudor Feast at Christmas, Sunday, Dec. 25 at 6 p.m. A remarkable project is about to take place. Without the use of modern conveniences, a group of historians and archaeologists will prepare a Tudor feast as it would have been more than 400 years ago. Rediscovering a way of life from an age gone by, they wear period costumes, source food from the land and use recipes from the era.

Holiday Train Christmas at the Bear Creek Park Train runs to Jan. 1, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ride on the train through the Christmas forest display and Santa’s Golden Reindeer tunnel exhibit. Bill Reid, left, executive director of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, wishes everyone a very merry Christmas at the December chamber luncheon. The annual Christmas luncheon – held at Sonrise Church – is a favourite with chamber members, drawing a large turnout to hear guest speakers, enjoy seasonal music and food, and network in a friendly atmosphere. This year, the special guest was Santa Claus.

President’s Message As 2011 comes to a close I’d like to take the time to reect on the fantastic year at the Cloverdale & District Chamber of Commerce. The volunteerism within this organization is incredible and without the tremendous efforts we would not have been able to set the records that we have. Our partnership with the Cloverdale BIA needs to be highlighted as the two organizations work so closely and efďŹ ciently together. There were record participants in the Rodeo, Halloween and Christmas parades as well as record spectators, with over 25,000 spectators at the Christmas parade alone. The chamber is growing with more and more members

The excitement of the holidays coupled with the stresses of preparing for the festivities can cause gastro-intestinal symptoms that don’t seem to be relieved by any conventional remedies because the root cause has more to do with stress and anxiety than food and drink. In this case, keep in mind that there is a homeopathic mixture designed specifically for this situation. For general stress and anxiety, Rescue Remedy can be very helpful. If you’re looking for something to help booster your energy levels, consider a Vitamin B Complex (which supports energy metabolism) or Alfalfa tonic (to help with both physical and mental exhaustion). As always, it is crucial to check with your doctor or pharmacist regarding the safety of starting each supplement you choose. If any of your symptoms are out-of-the-norm for you, please get a proper diagnosis from your doctor before trying anything on your own. With appropriate supplementation, however, you can enjoy your holiday meals to the fullest. Happy Holidays!
