Actors John Noble, Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson run for cover in Cloverdale.
By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale’s star turn in a popular science fiction TV series hits the airwaves next Friday night. Scenes from the Feb. 10 episode of Fringe – titled ‘Welcome to Westfield’ – were filmed on location in Cloverdale in mid-December, when the cast and crew spent several days here. Actors John Noble, Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson were easily spotted during the long hours the production spent filming outside in the drizzle, thrilling fans who came from as far away as Abbotsford hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars.

Onlookers were rewarded with a spectacle when the 5600-block of 176 Street was transformed from a festive shopping district into a windswept urban wasteland. Special effects green screens were erected at either end of the block, which was littered with overturned vehicles, debris, fallen power poles and other wreckage. At one point, frantic passengers ran from a school bus in search of refuge. Later, the production headed indoors to Dann’s Electronics, at the fictitious corner of Quimby Road and Cypress Street, a U.S. flag hanging prominently from one of the
lamp posts outside the shop. Scenes were also filmed inside the cafe at the Clover Inn, which, like Dann’s landmark repair shop, was used for a previous location shoot for Fringe’s season premiere back in September. The synopsis for the upcoming Cloverdale episode is as follows: “The Fringe team gets trapped. Peter, Olivia and Walter come face to face with a mysterious and terrifying Fringe event as they get trapped in a town that there’s no escaping from.” Fringe airs Friday nights on City-TV (Channel 13) in Metro Vancouver.

Leos visit Martha Currie Contributed A big highlight for Martha Currie Elementary last month was the visit of the Grey Cup to the school. Barron Miles and Chris Boyko dropped in, accompanied by Geroy Simon who was carrying the Grey Cup. The visiting Lions hosted an assembly for the students before providing an opportunity for all students to be photographed with them and the cup. The Lions also took the time to speak to the students about the merits of hard work and that effort brings reward. The message: Hard Work Pays Off!

The trophy will be accompanied at various spots during the B.C. jaunt by Lions players Travis Lulay, Paul McCallum, Geroy Simon and Angus Reid. This isn’t the first time the Grey Cup has made a Cloverdale visit in the wake of the B.C. Lions’ exciting November victory on home turf at BC Place. The trophy visited Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary last month, and returned again in January, when it toured several local elementary schools, Don Christian Elementary and Ecole Martha Currie Elementary (pictured above), along with several players.

Barron, now on the coaching staff of the Lions having retired from playing, gave the audience a bit of an insight into how a coach’s life differs from that of the player and the pressure such a position brings. Barron also credited Chris Boyko, a strength and conditioning coach with the Lions, for getting the players into shape and allowing them to have longer successful careers. Many thanks to Jaden, Jordan, Ava, Tayja and Kiana for dragging their dads to school so we could have a great day! GO LIONS!!

Not so fast, TransLink Fare hikes are a concern to students, fixed-income seniors and many commuters without an alternative Thank goodness for Martin Crilly, TransLink’s independent regulator. He may be a bean counter but he’s the only thing that stands between transit users and fare hikes planned for 2013. The TransLink commissioner may indeed find that TransLink is justified in hiking cash fares, monthly passes and FareSaver passes an average of 12.5% next January. (There hasn’t been a

hike in cash fares since 2008 and monthly and FareSaver passes were bumped up two years ago.) No doubt TransLink will argue that costs have risen at least 2% a year since then and, if fares were held to current levels, additional services would be delayed or cuts would be required. Crilly’s job over the next few

weeks, then, will be to look at transit operations to ensure the most is being made of existing services and that TransLink simply can’t do without more revenue. He’s also asking the public to weigh in by emailing comments@translinkcommission.org by Feb. 15.

TOT TOURS: CHOO CHOO CHILDREN Little engineers take a tour of the Museum’s train displays, then play railroad games and check out the Museum’s antique rail toys. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Friday, February 24, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. OR 1 p.m.-2 p.m., 1 session $6.50 (3-6yrs).
This is not a big issue for people who don’t take transit on a regular basis. For commuters already bracing for higher fuel, repair and insurance costs, an extra 25 to 50 cents on cash fares, $2.50 to $5 on FareSavers and an additional $10 to $19 more on monthly passes are no big deal.
But these hikes are a concern to students, fixed-income seniors and moderate to low-income commuters who typically can’t afford cars and have no alternative but to take transit. These individuals can’t afford escalating fares and will have to give up something else to pay for them. Monthly passes, which most youth and seniors would buy, aren’t cheap and would be $124 (up $14 if hikes are approved) for a two-zone pass, for example. There is also a concern that the occasional user will give transit a miss on game nights and other big events because it’s cheaper for a family of four to take the car and park. There could be a point at which high fares simply turn away customers. TransLink argues that won’t happen because transit will always be needed and people will pay more for convenience. We’ll see.

EXHIBITIONS BC ELECTRIC: MORE THAN JUST A TRAM Explore the new possibilities electricity brought to Surrey. In 1910 the BC Electric Railway officially opened its line connecting New Westminster to Chilliwack. Through four decades the railway moved freight and passengers within Surrey while connecting the communities to our east with the markets to our west. The arrival of electricity also paved the way for new industry and technology, powering lumber mills and lighting our homes. Funeral draws hundreds Helicopter pilot will always be part of the ‘RCMP family’ By Sarah Massah A sea of Mounties dressed in Red Serge greeted hundreds of mourners attending last week’s funeral of RCMP helicopter pilot Dave Brolin. Family, friends and co-workers quickly filled the seats at Peace Portal Alliance Church, with many left standing or sitting on the floor for the service honouring the Surrey father of two, who died Jan. 17 while on a training exercise near Chilliwack. Eight Mounties escorted in Brolin’s casket, which was covered with the Canadian flag, as bagpipes played, signaling the beginning of the ceremony. Speaking on behalf of the family was Cpl. Paul Hayes, who frequently worked with Brolin. Describing Brolin as a man who lived life to the fullest and loved his family, Hayes recounted memories of the 46-year-old which he had compiled from family members. “Dave loved his family, his children, his profession and he loved his country,” Hayes said. Hayes told the story of when Brolin, 18 at the time, quit college, telling his dad he wanted to be a helicopter pilot, even though he didn’t know anything about it. After he trained to be a pilot, his father said “he just ran with it and never looked back,” Hayes said. Commissioner Bob Paulson

spoke on behalf of the RCMP, expressing his condolences to Brolin’s wife and children and promising them that they would always be a part of the “RCMP family.” Brolin was well-known within the local aviation community as a talented pilot with more than 25 years of experience. He was one of a handful of pilots in B.C. who specialized in flying film helicopters to capture airborne footage for movie and television productions. People who knew Brolin say he left the movie business to work for the RCMP in order to spend more time with his family. Born in California, he was a pilot with the U.S. Army during
Operation Desert Storm and with Blackcomb Aviation in Whistler before joining the RCMP. As a tribute to his military service, two bugle players sounded the musical piece “Taps” – traditionally played by the U.S. military during flag ceremonies or funerals. Tributes to Brolin continue to pour in to the BC RCMP News Facebook page, as well as to a webpage created by the RCMP for those wishing to leave condolences for his family. The Transportation Safety Board and B.C. Coroners Service are still carrying out their investigation of the crash.

Driver beats long odds ‘Joe Millionaire’ guided to a 17-1 longshot win by Mills
o
By Jennifer Lang A harness racer from Langley scored the first win of her driving career last Friday night at Fraser Downs Racetrack. Kayla Mills, 22, guided Joe Millionaire, a 17-to-1 longshot, to victory in the seventh race Jan. 27, winning by six lengths, with a time of 1:58 on the wet, muddy track. This isn’t her first win at Cloverdale’s landmark racetrack. Last spring, Mills won the “powder puff derby as part of Harness the Hope, an annual fundraiser held at Fraser Downs. The non-betting race features women-only drivers.

How do I document the business-use portion of my personal automobile? Whether you are an employee, business owner, or shareholder the Canada Revenue Agency requires you to document the business-use portion of your personal automobile in order to make a claim for your expenses related to the vehicle. Generally, you must maintain a logbook to document business and personal use driving of the vehicle in the year. The logbook should contain the date, destination, purpose and the distance travelled for each trip. Ideally, you should include the name and address of the client that was visited. Remember that the trip directly to or from your home and usual place of business is considered to be personal. I know that it is often difficult to consistently maintain an accurate automobile logbook, but note that in a CRA audit, the onus is usually on the taxpayer to show that the kilometres driven were in fact not personal use. For more information on this or other issues, please contact me at your convenience.

I want to sell my home but I do not want the realtor to put a sign on my property. What are the benefits of a sign?
A
If you want to sell your home you should utilize all the advertising resources available to you — including signage on your property. A sign lets people driving by know that your house is for sale. Potential buyers will drive through certain areas to see what is for sale. Without a sign, they could miss the opportunity to view your home and you could miss an opportunity to sell. Also, your neighbours may be waiting for a listing to come up in their area because they want a relative or friend to move into their neighbourhood. Without a sign, they have no way to know that your house is for sale.

I’ve just spilled liquid on my new laptop!! What do I do? Turn it off immediately, turn it upside down with the screen open and place paper towels under it. After several days and you’re sure it’s completely dry, bring it to us and we’ll test it. You didn’t mention what type of liquid. Many drinks are like pouring syrup on your laptop and this residue sticks to the laptop’s motherboard, keyboard, etc.

“For all your personal and corporate tax needs”
Preschool prepares your young child for kindergarten in many ways. They are the foundations for academic learning. In preschool your child will listen to poetry and songs — building blocks needed to grasp phonics and reading skills when it is developmentally appropriate. The play that takes place with water, sand, and containers form the foundation for understanding some basic math concepts. Matching, sequencing, one-to-one correspondence are all activities that are done over and over in preschool settings to help children prepare to learn academics. Watching other children pursue a challenging task is also helpful. The presence of other children and a wide variety of materials are two big reasons why a preschool is a good thing. Registrations are now being accepted for our new full day preschool starting in September 2012.

Is Martial Arts different from other sports?
A
The physical aspects of Martial Arts have similarities to other sports like fitness and conditioning but differ in the focus on developing both the left and right side for coordination and in training for personal self defence. The biggest difference is that Martial Arts places a strong emphasis on skills that will last a lifetime like discipline, focus, confidence/self esteem, dedication, perseverance, courtesy and respect. As the physical side develops, so does the student’s mental abilities such as focus, discipline and concentration. Confidence builds as the training progresses and they begin to see that working hard is fun and has great rewards. When our students test to Black Belt they complete an endurance test which encourages them to push themselves farther than they ever have in the past. This helps them realize that they are capable of much more than they could ever imagine. Years from now it is the student’s self confidence, commitment and character developed along their Martial Arts journey that will prevail and assure success in the future.
