and Chilliwack Museum, to March 24. The intention was to bring Surrey Museum visitors to view the society’s two Interurban cars, which have been the focus of nearly a decade of effort and some 17,000 volunteer hours of labour. “We are a little disappointed,” Aubert said. “We really wanted to take people by the hand and bring them to the site.” Last June, the society held what was intended to be their last open house at Sullivan Station. “We were ready,” Aubert said. Now, thinking of holding two more open houses at Sullivan in order to keep the project in the public eye and continue building momentum prior to “the big move” to Cloverdale, likely sometime in July.

heritage destination. The Surrey Heritage Society is looking for $12,000 to help relocate the Freight Transportation Museum. The society has asked for council’s support; a staff report looking into the feasibility of the plan is expected to make its way to Surrey City Council on Feb. 20. Groups have offered to help move the vehicles at no cost, Orazietti said, The museum building, at the corner of 176 Street and 60 Avenue, was most recently home to the Cloverdale Seniors Centre, which relocated to the new Cloverdale Recreation Centre last year. Meanwhile, the public is invited to hear more about the Surrey Heritage Society’s plans at an open house next week. That meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Hall, 6306 152 Street. The society is also launching a membership drive, as well as planning a fundraising event at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino during live racing
And the move, Aubert stresses, will be quite big, involving cranes that will lift the vintage cars onto the four tractor trailers that will haul the refurbished cars to Cloverdale, an operation that’s expected to take 12 hours to complete. Meanwhile, plenty of work awaits. Aubert said excavation on the foundation could begin the first week of March, once the tendering process is complete and the necessary permits are in place. Cloverdale Station – a second phase of the project – will also be home to the Clover Belle, a vintage 1912 streetcar that’s at the focus of separate restoration efforts by the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. Plans call for a streetcar line up 176 Street from Highway 10 to 58A Avenue.

Waiting for the Son Have you noticed that the days are getting longer? Me neither. Oh, I know that they are, and that they have been since December 22nd. But I can’t really see the difference yet. I’m still getting up in the dark, driving to work in the dark, driving back home again in the dark. I find this to be a bit of a dreary time of year. It’s an in-between time: the excitement of Christmas is over, and the reality of spring is still a ways off. Intellectually, I know there’s more daylight in every day, but emotionally I’m not enjoying it yet. No wonder so many people in northern latitudes suffer from SAD - seasonal affective disorder – a winter depression caused by lack of sunlight. Fortunately, I know spring is coming, and with it longer daylight hours. There’s something else I know is coming, even though I can’t see it yet – the return of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The Bible promises us that He’s coming back too. Granted, His return is not something we can check the calendar for, or know when it will happen. But when it does, we won’t have to worry about sunlight anymore. In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, it says about the world to come: “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb (Jesus) is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light ... “ Now that’s something I look forward to.

On the ‘magic’ list or you pay It annoys me when people think all my medical needs are covered by the government To the editor; Re: “B.C. Seniors Scrimping on Meds to Save Cash,” Jan. 26 This article reveals something that I have been struggling with for about three years. Too many drugs and not enough money to buy them. I suspected that I wasn’t the only one who skips doses and puts off buying more when the funds are low or non-existent. Actually, I’m surprised that the percentages aren’t higher. In reality, the number of people living with chronic, untreated health problems is going to grow. What I take issue with, however, are the comments by Health Minister Mike de Jong. “Prescription drug costs are entirely covered with no deductible for more than 270,000 low-income patients in B.C.,” he asserts. Sounds impressive. As long as those patients use the “approved” drugs. For example, you’re a pa-
tient who is unable to tolerate a particular drug that’s covered, but can take a similar one that isn’t on the “magic” list. Well, you pay, take the one that makes you sick, or take nothing. The government puts a dollar limit on each prescription. If the total amount is more than what they will pay (due to higher dispensing fees or drug cost increases), the patient has to pay the difference. I am on a provincial disability. I have a number of health issues that need treatment. It annoys me when people think that all my medical needs are paid for by the government. In this article, the Minister of Health claims that people on social assistance “pay nothing out of pocket”. This is untrue. Some prescription drugs are not covered because they have been removed

Blind students lace up, learn to play hockey Courage Canada program is getting Surrey students on the ice
Contributed There are hundreds of things 18-year-old Jeremy Ferrer can do. Skating is one of them. Seeing isn’t. “It’s a fun and interesting program – it’s all good,” says Jeremy, who is legally blind. A senior at North Surrey Secondary, Jeremy is among a dozen students from the Surrey School District who are taking part in Courage Canada’s blind skating program. A non-profit organization dedicated to increasing athletic opportunities for people who are visually impaired, Courage Canada provides leadership and blind hockey workshops to school districts across the country. In Surrey, students in grades 5 through 12 are taking part in a series of on- and off-ice workshops at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex. Each session has a theme – courage, advocacy, healthy living and leadership – with the final session in April culminating in a blind hockey scrimmage to showcase what the students have learned. “It’s really fun and I always learn something new,” says Josh Guillemand, 17, from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale. Joanna Angelidis, district teacher of the visual impaired and district orientation and mobility specialist, says the Courage Canada program provides students with visual impairments an opportunity to experience the thrill of overcoming challenges and builds confidence. “I’ve watched them progress, and they really are amazing. You’d never guess they were visually impaired.” Blind hockey is played using a puck that makes noise. Traditionally, athletes with the most functional vision play forward as they are able to make

“Our focus is YOUR vision”
In October, the Grade 7 Student Leadership Team at Adams Road Elementary attended the Vancouver We Day Celebration. Inspired by the stories they heard, the students wanted to hold a fundraiser to support a global cause. The students chose to support the Free the Children Drought Relief Campaign to support children and families in East Africa. The student leaders held an assembly to share their We Day experience and to inspire students to support people in need. On Jan. 20, the leaders held a coin toss event. Students brought coins and tried to land them on a large world map closest to the target area of East Africa. The students raised $500, which will provide clean water for five families for a month. The Student Leadership Team organizes a variety of local and global fundraising efforts as well as planning and leading other school initiatives such as spirit days, lunch hour games, morning announcements and more.

Back from the streets, Brar will push for welfare changes
By Jennifer Lang Jagrup Brar returned home to Surrey last week, ending a month-long Welfare Challenge issued by the group Raise the Rates. The Fleetwood-Surrey MLA was a little skinnier (he lost 11 kgs, or 26 pounds) and had to sell his backpack to conjure enough money to buy a SkyTrain ticket to City Central Station. He spent his final night of the 31-day experiment couch surfing in Surrey before reuniting with his family. He says the experience of living on $610 for a month – the amount of assistance for single employable people – left him wiser about the plight of those living on social assistance who are supposed to be looking for work. Sharing a bathroom down the hall at one of the Downtown Eastside’s Single Residency Occupancy (SRO) hotels was an eye-opener to the barriers to employment for people on welfare. “How can you take a shower if there are 100 people waiting for that shower? he told Black Press last week. Wasting hours lining up for free meals and subsisting on a bland, starchy diet of inexpensive, non-perishable noodles and oatmeal was another revealing

Catch a uniquely Canadian band Northern Pikes bring their tour to Langley stage PUBLICITY PHOTO
By Jennifer Lang One of Saskatoon’s biggest musical exports performs tomorrow night (Feb. 10) at the Cascades Casino in Langley. Hailing from the prairies and named for a feisty freshwater fish, the Northern Pikes are uniquely Canadian, blending roots rock with a pop sensibility to create a string of hits in the late 1980s and early ‘90s: “Teenland, “Things I Do For Money, “Hopes Go Astray, “Girl with a Problem, and “Kiss Me You Fool. A generation of MuchMusic fans got to know – and love them – through their videos and memorably catchy songs, which featured jangly guitars, infectious hooks, and clever lyrics, notably the quasi-novelty hit “She Ain’t Pretty. The video featured a head-turning, demanding woman with glowing eyes and monsterlength nails who isn’t always what she appears to be. True story: a friend had the Pikes’ 1988 album, Secrets of the Alibi. The record was pressed on translucent emerald green vinyl. Gorgeous. Ah,
the joys of a turntable. Anyway, the Pikes took a break before reuniting in late 1999. They recorded their last original album in 2003 (It’s a Good Life) and have continued to perform live. In all, they’ve put out 12 albums (most recently a 2007 compilation called Platinum in 2007) and even collaborated with TV’s Survivorman Les Stroud. Turns out he’s a singersongwriter, and a fan of the band. Stroud won’t be there at the Cascades Casino Summit Theatre tomorrow, but all but one of the members of the original lineup (Merl Bryck) will be: Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin, and Don Schmid. Semko is also a solo recording artist who worked as the music director for TV’s Due South and has composed music for TV and film. According to their website, the band is producing a collection of Northern Pikes songs recorded and reinterpreted by female artists. The release date has not yet been confirmed. Tickets at www.ticketsweb.ca. Doors open at 7 p.m., show is at 8 p.m.
The Northern Pikes perform Feb. 10 at the Summit Theatre at Cascades Casino in Langley. Doors open at 7 p.m., show is at 8 p.m.
