Teen brings rainy science to conference By Jennifer Lang A budding scientist from Cloverdale attended an international conference last weekend, sharing his findings on how to turn rain into electrical power. Lord Tweedsmuir’s Tyler Tardi presented his award-winning science project at the American Junior Academy of Science annual meeting. Tardi, a silver medalist at last year’s national science fair, was invited to present his science project at the AJAS, which was part of a larger scientific conference.

Tyler Tardi presents his R.E.D. project in Vancouver.
Thousands of scientists and researchers converged in Vancouver for the American Association for the Advancement of Science Convention, held outside the U.S. for the first time in 30 years. The Grade 8 student presented his findings, undergoing a peer review session where other young scientific minds questioned him as part of a round-table discussion on his project. . Last year, he earned a silver medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair for his Rain Energy Device, or R.E.D. His “Go Green with R.E.D.” project proved
it’s possible to tap into the electric power potential of rain by directing rainwater into a waterwheel placed inside a drain pipe – an hypothesis he tested after inspiration struck on a rainy day in Cloverdale. He worked out that an average sized home roof in Cloverdale using his R.E.D. would have to run 340 hours a year in order to save two cents in home electricity costs. The electricity produced is small, but Tardi believes it’s got potential. And he’s been working on ways to improve the device ever since, See TEEN EXCELS/ Page 6

Why are we still waiting? Time to pony up new school money To the editor; It was very nice of Dianne Watts’ friends to help her out at election time and promise a couple of new schools. Now, almost four months later it’s either another empty promise or another Liberal lie. No money has come – not even the seed money to start the planning. Surrey Board of Education Chair Laurae McNally continues to emphasize the blame is not with the Ministry of Education but with the provincial treasury board. I’m sure she’s aware Kevin Falcon – from Surrey – is the Finance Minister. Where is he? While it’s easy for McNally to point fingers at the provincial government, let’s also admit it was Dianne Watts and Surrey First who created the schools crisis in the first place. The recent census figures show Surrey grew by almost 75,000 people from 2006 to 2011. Watts and Co. knew
full well there was no capital funding forthcoming so why did they continue their reckless develop-atall-costs agenda. Alas, in her time of need just weeks before the civic election, there were Dianne’s friends in the provincial government lining up to help bail her out. Now that the election is over, will the Liberals keep their promise? Their past record doesn’t instill confidence. But I believe the ballot box is always half full; there’s a provincial election coming in about 15 months, so we are likely to hear this feel-good announcement several more times. On the other hand, if no cheque is signed, will Dianne Watts have the backbone to even murmur? Or did the school crisis she created magically disappear for another three years?

Cassidy’s dream soars Her dream has provided many sick children with hours of enjoyment. And that was the whole point. Before she passed away two years ago, Cloverdale’s Cassidy Briggs had a vision: to raise funds and collect arts and crafts supplies for B.C. Children’s Hospital’s (BCCH) oncology ward. Diagnosed with liver cancer just before her eighth birthday in 2008, Cassidy knew what it was like to spend long periods of time in hospital. An avid artist herself, she often noticed there was little for young patients to do during their oftenlengthy and difficult treatment. Cassidy lost her battle on Jan. 11, 2010, but her family and friends honoured her wish by launching the annual Cassidy’s Craft Campaign. Now in its third year, the campaign began on Valentine’s Day and continues to March 2. Due to the campaign’s success, craft supplies are now provided to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s pediatric oncology ward as well as BCCH. Donations can be made online at www.cassidybriggsfoundation.com/Donate.html or by sending cheques made out to the Cassidy Briggs Foundation to 17790 #10 Hwy., P.O. Box 34009, Surrey, B.C. V3S 8C4. This Friday, staff and students at Cassidy’s school, George Greenaway Elementary, wrap up their third annual Cassidy’s Craft Campaign, collecting donations of new craft supplies and cash. finals are Sunday, Feb. 26. “The boys really, really want to win,” Anita said, noting a gold medal would qualify the team for the Optimist International Under 18 Curling Championships. “They’ve been practicing like crazy,” she said. “All they do is talk curling, and talk strategy.”

The Cloverdale Bantam C Colts captured the gold medal at a hockey tournament in Kamloops last weekend. Representing the Lower Mainland, the team went undefeated in round-robin play, turning in a gritty performance against hosts Kamloops; advancing to the finals on a 4-2 win in the semi-final. The Colts then dominated a scrappy Clearwater squad with a decisive 5-1 victory for the championship. Cloverdale capped the tournament as the only undefeated team, with the most goals, and the least goals against. – Contributed by Brian Arabsky

Looking to
Presidents Message 2012 is shaping up to be an amazing year for Cloverdale. The Brick Yard Station is set to open this spring. The old Safeway mall site is finally moving forward with shovels in the ground this year. The Heritage rail and Cloverbelle station is being constructed and will be open this year. And finally the Chamber, and our partners are working hard at obtaining the teamsters trucks to re-open the truck museum in Cloverdale. There is a buzz afoot in Cloverdale this year as we continue to develop the town center, while maintaining the fantastic feel downtown Cloverdale. We are here to represent your business needs and welcome every business to join our organization.

Tired of counting sheep? Prescription drugs may help but they can be habit forming. Many lead to hangover and other side effects. There are many herbs and homeopathics that will help sleep. However, try to modify your lifestyle first. A regular exercise program is important. It has been found that sedentary office-workers are more prone to insomnia than manual workers. The best time to do your workout is early in the morning when you are “fresh”. Remember to avoid doing exercise in the evening. Pay attention to your diet. Avoid fatty foods, strong spices, caffeine and alcohol. Do not drink coffee or tea after 5 p.m., even green tea. Do not watch exciting movies in the evening. Avoid afternoon naps. Do not smoke in the evening and of course it would be best if you do not smoke at all. Take a warm shower before bedtime. A cold shower may wake you up, and too hot a shower may make you sweat. After your shower, you can apply some talcum powder or soothing body cream to make yourself comfortable. Eat a couple of cookies and drink two ounces of warm milk. A little bit of food and milk neutralize the acid in the stomach so adrenaline production is minimized. A transient hyperglycemia after a petite meal also induces drowsiness. Do not overdo this, however, because too full a stomach will disturb your sleep and too much fluid will cause excessive “bathroom runs”.

Herbs work through several mechanisms. Valerian root, hops, passion flower, skullcap, lemon balm, and chamomile are tranquilizers. Rhodiola, magnolia, and ashwgandha are adrenal supporters and they relieve stress by reducing cortisol. Theanine and L-tryptophan are amino acids that may induce a sleepy feeling. The reason why one feels sleepy after a turkey dinner is because there is a lot of tryptophan in turkey meat. If you just need a calming agent, then combination of tranquillizers will work, e.g. Sedaplus (Thorne) or Seditol Plus (Douglas). If there is a stress factor, then combinations of ashwagandha,
magnolia, and L-theanine e.g. Sleep Tonight (Enzymatic) will probably work better. If you have anxiety and panic attacks, try Anz Ease (Terry Naturally). Homeopathic medicines work by helping the body to adjust to stressful situations so the body can relax and fall asleep. Neurexan® (Heel) contains homeopathic avena sativa, passiflora, zincum valerianicum and coffea cruda. If you have restless sleep, try Homeogen-46 (Boiron) that contains stramomium, hyocyamus, passiflora, ballota and nux moschata. The nice thing about homeopathic medicine is that it has no side effect, can be used together
with other medications, and there is no age limit. A single remedy called Nux Vomica helps if you fall asleep easily but wake up at 2 a.m. Dr. Sarah Sjovold, N.D., a local naturopath is giving a seminar on “A Naturopathic Approach to Insomnia & Sleep Disorders” at 7 p.m. on March 21st, right here in Cloverdale. Register at www.CloverdalePharmasave.com Dr. Henry Cheng is a medical graduate of the University of London, England, and has been long time Natural Products Consultant at Cloverdale Pharmasave Health Centre.
