Goal has students seeing red Clayton Heights joins a national blood drive By Jennifer Lang The very idea of making a lifelong commitment while you’re still in high school may seem like a tough sell. But that’s exactly what Canadian Blood Services’ ‘Young Blood for Life’ campaign is pitching to teens across the country. The national recruitment drive aims to get teens to regularly donate while they’re still in high school, in hopes that giving blood will become a habit of a lifetime. Clayton Heights Secondary was ready to take up the challenge this school year. The students and staff have so far donated blood 24 times since September and are asking other students to take up the challenge this year, along with their friends and family. Schools compete against each
other to see which can donate the most blood by the end of the current school year; Clayton Heights is up against Enver Creek Secondary. CHS has about 16 school donors who are giving blood regularly, but Sheri Montgomery, an instructor, wants to see that increase to at least 24. Eligible donors can give blood every 56 days. Campaign participants are shuttled to the Canadian Blood Services permanent clinic at 10-6830 King George Boulevard, where the process of giving blood takes about an hour. “I’m very proud of those who step up and are attending regularly,” Montgomery says. “I hope it will be a lifelong commitment.” Donors must be 17 years of age, in good health, weigh at least 50 kg or 110 pounds, and undergo a

thorough screening process first. Fifty-two per cent of Canadians say they have – or have a family member – who needed blood. Joining the campaign was an easy decision for Montgomery. “I have type O blood,” she says. “I’m a universal donor.” It’s the type that’s most in de-
mand by hospitals and is often in short supply. Regardless of type, blood is always in great demand. One donation can save up to three lives. Canadian Blood Services says out of a class of 30 students, at least 15 of them, or a family member, will need blood during their
lifetime. But just one will end up giving blood. The Young Blood for Life challenge continues for the rest of the school year. Community members can give blood on behalf of Clayton Heights Secondary using the following member code: #CLAY002369.
Doris, Clova Cinema’s official greeter, retires
Doris and Cupcake.
By Jennifer Lang “We will miss your jokes.” “You will be sorely missed.” “You are such a fixture here at the Clova Cinema. You are truly a real part of Cloverdale culture.” “It seems funny not seeing you here tonight. We will miss you.” Those are just some of the tributes pouring in for Doris Burghardt, who’s retiring after 15
years as the official greeter at the Clova Cinema. For a generation of local movie-goers, Doris has been at the centre of the Clova experience, keeping an eye on things out front before the show, her little dog Cupcake at her side. (Before that there was Sheena, a pooch who passed away in 2007) Once patrons were seated, Doris introduced the movie, usually with a joke for the 7 p.m. evening screening, which attracted a more mature crowd than the afternoon matinees, where her firm but gentle way with children made the movie-going experience enjoyable for all.

The Class of ‘89, looking mighty fine. Wonder what they’ll wear this June?
The school’s illustrious namesake, Lord Tweedsmuir, can be found among the list of notable names who have so far posted profiles on the site. “I will be there in spirit if not in body,” he says. Retired Lord Tweedsmuir teacher and well-known local historian Jack Brown is another. Attendees can buy tickets on the website (there’s a $12 fee to cover costs of security and other services for the event), or donate money to the celebration. The reunion is being held at the school, 6151 180 Street, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2. The day has been arranged into three core times according to class years:1912 to 1969 will gather from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1970 to 1989 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and 1990 to present are from 2-4 p.m. The welcome and introduction is set for 1 p.m.

Individual class years are encouraged to organize their own class reunions around the same weekend, giving attendees another chance to catch up with former classmates. Surrey’s first high school originated in 1912, when the fourroom Cloverdale Public School added a first year junior high class. In 1917, when the first secondary students graduated, the school was renamed Cloverdale Superior School. In 1919, the school was renamed Surrey High School, which moved to a new building in 1921. The school has undergone several name – and location – changes over the years, finally adopting the name Lord Tweedsmuir in 1940 to honour the late John Buchan, a beloved Governor General of Canada.

One night they were dealing with an unexpected problem getting the movie started, so Doris was sent out with a joke to read – as a stalling tactic. By Jennifer Lang Former students, staff and friends of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary now have a way to connect with one another in advance of the school’s 100th anniversary this spring. A reunion website has been set up by the Lord Tweedsmuir Alumni Association, the group organizing the reunion at the school – which is Surrey’s oldest high school. A large reunion celebration is planned for June 2, 2012 at the school. All former students, grads, staff and friends – from all years – are invited. Attendees can keep up with details as they get posted to the site, www.lordtweedsmuirreunion. ca, which makes for interesting browsing for those wanting to reminisce, search for old pals, or brush up on school history. The gradually evolving site contains slide shows of historic photographs, along with a place to post class photos, a section on school history, photo albums, and more – making it a mustvisit web portal for Cloverdalians here and abroad. Former classmates and friends of LTS are already posting profiles and updates on their whereabouts in the “classmates” section, making it easy to catch up online. Alumni from Halifax, Victoria, Surrey, Cloverdale, and even Riyadh, Saudi Arabia have already signed up, leaving “then” and “now” pictures, updates, Facebook links, and even tagging their current whereabouts on an interactive locator map and more.

Soup kitchen seeks good home The Cloverdale Korean Presbyterian Church has been running a weekly soup kitchen outside at Hawthorne Square Thursdays. The soup kitchen – once operated by different churches in town – was a casualty of the old Cloverdale Mall, which was torn down earlier this year. Senior minister Doo Je Kim says the needs of Cloverdale’s “friends outside shouldn’t be forgotten. Pacific Community Church has offered to host the soup kitchen on a temporary basis starting this fall, giving the organization a home base away from the square (and in from the rain).

Thousands of visitors pour into the historic town centre when Cloverdale hosts the 8th annual Blueberry Festival in August. Attractions include a show ‘n shine of vintage and classic cars, kid-friendly activities, a juried art show and craft fair, plus blueberry pie sales and pie-eating contests, where Ken “the Demolisher Wong and Caitlin McDonald blow the competition away.
Talking track After experiencing construction delays this summer, a plan that puts Cloverdale at the centre of a heritage rail revival is back on track. The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society – dedicated to preserving the history of Interurban rail travel in the region – is relocating its operations from Sullivan Station to Cloverdale. Along with a new garage, the society is building a replica of the original Cloverdale Station, and hopes to launch limited passenger runs in April 2012. But soil conditions on the site at 176 Street, just south of Highway 10, force the construction project to be delayed by nearly five months. Construction is to begin in the fall instead.

Brick Yard Station, Cloverdale’s newest commercial development, is starting to take shape. Construction on the brick-and-steel styled shopping centre – located on a 6.5 acre site at the northwest corner of Highway 10 and Highway 15 – began in the spring. SEPTEMBER Plant winds down Weeks before its Cloverdale plant will shut down, Maple Leaf Foods inc. says its selling the facility to another processed meat company that plans to reopen it next year. The plant is still scheduled to close on Sept. 30 (affecting 155 employees), but has been sold to Premium Brands. The new owners plan to relocate its Richmond, B.C., based Grimms Fine Foods operation to the 5523 176 Street, Surrey, location by the end of 2012.
Campus connection A new transit shuttle will carry students and staff between the three Surrey and Langley campuses of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The university and its student association partnered to bring in the intercampus shuttle, to fill in gaps in TransLink bus service, which students previously lampooned by staging a campus-to-campus race where a cyclist and a runner beat the bus. Rather than pay $30 for a TransLink U-Pass, Kwantlen students voted to pay $10 more per month for a customized pass that also finances the shuttle.

Surrey students will be in portables and more than 3,000 students will be at schools with extended timetables. By the time the $273 million in additional classroom space is a reality, more than 12,000 students will be housed in “temporary” classrooms. The ad hoc committee that formed to address the issue is calling on Surrey residents to write, call or email their MLAs, provincial cabinet ministers and the premier.
The scale and cost of a new animal shelter in Cloverdale has gone up in price, partly due to a requirement to build roads to the new facility. City staff asked council for a $2.5 million increase to the budget of the Surrey Animal Care Centre, bringing the total cost to $7.6 million.

Museum 2.0 on city agenda
Will businesses in downtown Cloverdale agree to give up some onstreet parking in return for a heritage street car line along 176 Street? A City of Surrey questionnaire distributed to 176 Street businesses also asks if the restored streetcar “Clover Belle” would have a positive impact and attract new visitors. The survey is part of the city’s ongoing feasibility study to consider the installation of a heritage streetcar line on 176 Street between Highway 10 and 58A Avenue. Running a dual-track on either side of the street, instead of a single, northsouth track along the eastern curb, would result in eight fewer parking spaces. Potential route and stop locations would be at existing corner bulges on each block.

Surrey City Council agreed to move forward with the long-promised second phase of the Surrey Museum, the centrepiece of downtown Cloverdale. In doing so, council allayed fears that the project had stalled. It’s encouraging news for the Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society, which had previously reminded council of $450,000 held in reserve for the expansion. Phase two is one of the recommendations of the city’s draft Cultural Plan. The museum completed seven years ago is less than half of the original proposal; plans were scaled back due to cost constraints when built. More space would allow the museum to bring in traveling national exhibits that are too large for the existing exhibit hall, and increase the amount of storage space for Surrey’s historic treasures.

Super exciting news Local skaters say they’re “super excited” by the promise of a long overdue makeover of the Cloverdale Youth Park’s skateboard facilities. A new, covered youth park – similar to the one that opened this year at the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre – will be added to the city’s Build Surrey capital projects list. The city’s announcement comes just days after Ollie North Skate Shop owner Shawn Jafarnejad told the Cloverdale Reporter the local youth skate park needs a complete overhaul.

New manager at flea market From page 7
First team crush the opposition on election night, sweeping seats for city council and all but one spot on school board. Long time councillor Bob Bose, of the Surrey Civic Coalition, lost his seat after 28 of the last 33 years on council. The Surrey First sweep dashes the hopes of Cloverdale candidates: independent Paul Hillsdon, who was running for school board, and SCC’s Gary Robinson, a council hopeful. Voter turnout was just 25 per cent in Surrey, slightly higher than in 2008.

Health officers back legal pot By Jeff Nagel A group of B.C. public health officers has joined a growing coalition of policy leaders urging the legalization and taxation of marijuana. The Health Officers Council of B.C. voted to endorse Stop the Violence B.C. and called for regulation of illegal substances like marijuana to reduce the harm from substance use and the unintended consequences of government policies. “The Health Officer’s Council and other experts are not saying that marijuana should be legalized and taxed because it is safe, said Dr. Paul Hasselback, a Vancouver Island medical health officer who chairs the council. “We are saying that proven public health approaches should be used to constrain its use. There is now more danger to the public’s health in perpetuating a market driven by criminal activity. The coalition argues prohibition has failed and enforcement has little impact on drug use, merely fueling the $7-billion illegal pot industry that experts say is directly linked to the spike in gang-related killings since 1997.
A report released by Stop the Violence says teens find it easy to buy marijuana and pot use among them is up considerably since the 1990s, despite heavy spending on drug enforcement. “By every metric, this policy is failing to meet its objectives, said Dr. Evan Wood, a Vancouver doctor and founder of the coalition. By regulating the market, he said, the distribution and use of marijuana would be more controlled and would also eliminate organized crime from the equation. It would also provide a source of tax revenue in the hundreds of millions, he added. Cannabis arrests in Canada climbed from 39,000 in 1990 to more than 65,000 in 2009, according to the coalition. An estimated 27 per cent of young B.C. residents aged 15-24 used pot at least once in 2008, according to one poll. Four former Vancouver mayors have also backed the coalition. – Black Press

What guidelines should I use for price when making an offer on a house we wish to buy? Your realtor should give you statistical information on similar homes that have sold, to establish what true market value is on the home. The second criteria would be to judge the home in comparison to all the other homes you have viewed with your realtor. You will by now have a real sense of what this home should sell for. Next, your offer depends on how hot the market is. Again, your realtor will be your resource for this. If there are multiple offers waiting to be presented, you may have to offer over asking price. Be careful not to make an insulting offer. Make it reasonable so you retain the good will of the seller. Once you have made the seller angry, they may on principle not bargain in good faith, and you could end up paying even more if you want the house. Your realtor will guide you. A realtor may write any offer you request, however if you are told it is much too low, it probably is and you should either forget about the house or start higher.

Can I use natural medicine instead of a sleeping pill for jet lag? Jet lag can be minimized by taking homeopathic Cocculus Indicus 30CH twice daily for two days before the flight and continue for 3 more days after the flight. There is no side effect and no age limit. Melatonin can be used to help adjust to the new night and day schedule but some people have wild dreams after taking Melatonin. What can I expect from a martial arts program? Here are just a few of the benefits that can be expected from training in martial arts: Fitness & Coordination – Martial Arts training builds strength and endurance through a progressive development of technical skills. Both left and right sides are trained equally which develops excellent coordination and flexibility. Self Defense - The speed and power developed combined with the skills to use them efficiently can produce incredible results in a self defense situation. Knowledge of self defense results in greater confidence which makes it less likely that you will become a victim. Self Confidence - Confidence does not come naturally for many people but it can be developed over time. Martial arts provides a positive learning environment with an emphasis on goal setting. Confidence increases as the students accomplish each goal in their training. This confidence and discipline can carry over to other aspects of life resulting in greater success in learning, leadership and physical endeavors. To learn more, come to our Open House:

What is the Reggio Philosophy?
Founded by Loris Malaguzzi, the approach requires children to be seen as competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, and inventive and possess a desire to interact and communicate with others. Teachers follow the children’s interests and do not provide focused instruction in reading and writing. Reggio approach has a strong belief that children learn through interaction with others, including parents, staff and peers in a friendly learning environment. The Reggio approach calls for the integration of the graphic arts as tools for cognitive, linguistic, and social development. Documentation of children’s work in progress is viewed as an important tool in the learning process for children, teachers, and parents. Projects are child-centered, following their interest, returning again and again to add new insights. The role of the teacher is to be that of a learner alongside the children serving as a guide, as she/he lends expertise to children. Programs in Reggio are family centered. The Reggio Emilia approach helps children to acquire skills of critical thinking and collaboration. At Kidzrock we believe in giving your children the best childcare/preschool experience imaginable.
