Surrey ridings in for a shift New Langley-Cloverdale riding among proposed changes

By Jeff Nagel Surrey will get a fifth MP and a new federal riding come the next federal election as part of a complex redrawing of electoral district boundaries. The biggest change is the proposed creation of a new Langley-Cloverdale riding that splits Cloverdale and Clayton off from the existing South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale federal riding, leaving a South Surrey-White Rock riding in the south. The new Langley-Cloverdale riding also takes in much of the current Fleetwood-Port Kells riding. The other three Surrey ridings would be renamed North Surrey-Guildford, Surrey Centre and West Surrey-Whalley. They would take the place of the existing Surrey North, Newton-North Delta and

Canada’s electoral districts are reviewed every 10 years by independent commissions in each province to account for shifts and growth in the population. These reviews consider population numbers – as captured in the federal census – as well as other

important factors such as communities of interest or identity, and historical and geographic factors. “The explosive population growth in the geographic area between Delta and Chilliwack south of the Fraser River dictates the need for additional electoral districts there,” the commission said in its findings. “In particular, the Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford geographic areas have seen remarkable population growth.” A public hearing in Surrey on the local boundary changes is set for the Sheraton Guildford hotel in Surrey on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to make a presentation must register by Aug. 30. Ironman calls off run An injury sidelines Will Rogers before his 500-km run attempt

By Jennifer Lang Will Rogers, the Cloverdale paramedic who’s raising money and awareness for Surrey’s Servants Anonymous Society, has called off his 500-km run. Rogers, who’s already completed two long-distance endurance feats this summer as part of his 2012 Million Dollar Journey, pulled a hamstring. He figures the injury will keep him from lacing up his running shoes for at least six weeks to two months, but remains optimistic he will still be able to enter this year’s Ironman Canada competition. The setback didn’t scuttle his 440-km bike ride from Penticton to Victoria over the Canada Day weekend. “The two-day ride was fifty percent rain, fifty percent headwinds, fifty percent sunshine,” he said in a short note sent to supporters. “No bears and no flats. And only one car fire.” He was also able to complete his June 24 swim in about 8.5 hours – his fastest of four attempts. At this point, Rogers is not planning to run on behalf of SAS next summer, but is keen to try the swim again “because it went so well.” This time he swam from Tsawwassen to Galiano’s Sturdies Bay marina instead of the other di-

Volunteers needed

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is recruiting volunteers in the Cloverdale area. Volunteers help the society with everything from making phone calls to caregivers to facilitating support groups. “They are absolutely invaluable to our team and are a big reason why we are able to meet the growing need for support and education for families living with dementia,” says Avalon Tournier, the society’s regional support and education coordinator for White Rock, North Delta and central Surrey. An estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. That number is projected to double over the next generation. Requirements for candidates who would like to volunteer as support group facilitators should have the following qualities: excellent listening and empathy skills, a knowledge of dementia – or a willingness to learn. An enthusiastic tip of the hat to the Cloverdale BIA and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce for standing up for Fraser Downs, the horse racing industry, and the Cloverdale economy. Two weeks ago, the business associations voiced their opposition to a $100-million destination casino that has supposedly been green lighted for South Surrey. B.C. Lottery Corp. officials told members of the Surrey Board of Trade June 21 the casino could be up and running by 2014 if Surrey City Council approves the plan. Gateway Gaming and Entertainment wants to shut down a casino in Newton and open a 200-suite, four-to-five star hotel, 600-seat convention centre and casino at 10th Avenue and 168 Street. “Our board felt strongly that this would cannibalize Fraser Down’s ability to survive in the marketplace,” Cloverdale BIA president Lyle MacMillan said in a letter sent to the BCLC. “Horse racing is at a crossroad in B.C. and we cannot afford to lose this vital industry.” The BIA and the Chamber are in

Chamber renews casino plea By Jennifer Lang B.C. Lottery Corporation officials are meeting with Cloverdale business leaders Monday to discuss local concerns over a South Surrey casino proposal that’s supposedly been green lighted. Both the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association are challenging plans for a 200-suite hotel with convention centre and casino proposed for 10 Avenue and 168 Street, arguing Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino should be expanded instead. On June 30, Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce executive director Bill Reid made an impassioned plea on behalf of Fraser Downs at the Cloverdale BIA annual general meeting. “It’s going to take some effort on behalf of the business community and our sup-

Lottery Corp. and city council – which would have to approve the new casino – to prove a destination casino in South Surrey won’t compete with – and cannibalize the profits of – Fraser Downs, which employs 600 people in the casino and along the backstretch and is the cornerstone of B.C.’s harness racing industry. Reid hoped to set up a stakeholders group that could be galvanized to march on City Hall or the BCLC if necessary. “We’re not taking this lying down, he said. “We’re going to win this one. We need to win it, to be honest with you. The business groups have also requested a meeting with Surrey city council. “I’m not a great fan of casinos, but on the other hand I’ve watched the one in Lang-

ley City really be an economic generator, said Cloverdale BIA director Terry Lister. “There’s probably only room for one big facility in Surrey, and it’s already established. But this week fractures appeared in the common Cloverdale front. Cloverdale BIA executive director Paul Orazietti counseled caution, pointing to a number of outstanding factors that need to be considered. As a result, Orazietti said he believes the application will be slowed down, and called lobbying efforts opposing the proposal “premature. He counseled caution until more details are known after the July 16 meeting. “There’s no need to get the placards and the pitchforks. Meanwhile, observers say a report on the future of B.C.’s horse racing industry is imminent, something that will factor into discussion around Fraser Downs.

Climate champions Committing ‘Acts of Green’ nets Lord Tweedsmuir cash and kudos

By Jennifer Lang Through hard work and determination, environmental leadership students at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary have won a $1,000 award in the National High School Climate Challenge. The students took top prize for taking an active role in keeping their school – and community – green. The prize was awarded late last month at a yearend wrap-up party for Environment Club members at George Greenaway Park, among trees students planted three years ago for Surrey Parks’ Releaf program. On hand for the presentation was Olympic athlete Nathan Vadeboncoeur, who advocates for action on the environment as a Clean Air Champion with the High School Climate Challenge program. “It’s great to see these students taking what they

have learned about climate change and making some real, tangible changes as a result,” Vandeboncoeur said. The annual challenge requires the completion of as many 140 “Acts of Green” as possible over the course of the school year. Lord Tweedsmuir’s students have eagerly risen to the challenge for three years, building up projects in energy conservation, launching transport campaigns, a water project, park and tree initiatives. This past school year, they also completed projects for BC Hydro, TransLink and Pulse Energy. They’re hoping to create a new community garden, with some of the funds. The remainder will pay for ongoing supplies and related costs. “We will put this money to good use in our community,” says Grade 10 student Puneet Sidhu. The challenge has acted as an excellent catalyst for growth in the school’s environmental activities, says Susan Hunter-Jivung, a physics teacher and Environment Team leader at Lord Tweedsmuir. This year, the school launched the Surrey Schools Environmental Leadership Team, holding a miniconference, a green science fair, and other activities. The High School Climate Challenge is run by the non-profit society Clean Air Champions, with funds from the City of Surrey and the Honda Foundation. The students also received a $1,250 school bursary from the City of Surrey’s Lend-a-Hand program, in exchange for cleaning garbage from George Greenaway Park each week.

Pushing beyond the comfort zone Family refuses to let barriers stand in the way By Jennifer Lang It’s not every family that finds itself with three champions in its midst. But Amy Smith, her brother Patrick, and dad Stephen have all been named Canadian champions in Taekwondo. They each won their respective classes in the American Taekwondo Association/World Traditional Taekwondo Union.

But it’s their dad, Stephen, who has Multiple Sclerosis, a degenerative nerve condition, who may have faced the biggest challenge in taking up the physically demanding martial art. His MS meant sometimes he had to look at his feet to know where they were (he couldn’t feel them), and an

The Smiths train locally at Cloverdale Black Belt Academy, where their achievements are being celebrated, and are helping to inspire those around them. “It is always rewarding to see our students overcome obstacles and achieve success,” says Karen Bennett, coowner of CBBA, and a competitive Taekwondo champion herself. “The Smiths not only had the courage to step outside of their comfort zone and try a new challenge, but they had the determination to see it come to fruition.” Patrick, sparring champion for first degree black belt (boys aged 12-14), is autistic. His parents were told he’d never achieve a Grade 1 reading level much less excel at martial arts training. These days he’s looking forward to learning to drive – and attending university. Amy, who took first place in both sparring and forms in first

No wonder mom Sue Smith, also a student at the academy, is so proud: “Stephen and I never thought we would become parents,” she said, explaining how the couple waited 14 years before welcoming Patrick into their “hearts and our home.” Like his twin siblings, Amy and Noah, he came into the Smith family from Kazakhstan through adoption. “[They] have consistently amazed us with their drive and zeal for life and all it has to offer,” Sue says. Now that he’s watched three family members have success, brother Noah is thinking about entering the competition for Canada Champ next year. The Taekwondo association Cloverdale Black Belt Academy

OT ban begins at ICBC

Unionized ICBC workers have begun an overtime ban as part of job action aimed at spurring the auto insurer to give ground in contract talks. The ban began July 6 and follows a Labour Relations Board ruling that found ICBC was bargaining in bad faith by refusing to discuss wages and benefits until a provincial review of the corporation concludes. The two sides are expected to resume negotiations later this month. COPE 378 issued 72-hour strike notice in June but union leaders indicated they would ramp up job action very slowly, in an effort to pressure the government without affecting drivers.
