Two actors, one family The MacNeils reach for the stars while leading normal lives By Jennifer Lang Two promising local actors recently had a chance to walk the red carpet at a Hollywood awards ceremony. Donnie and Laine MacNeil – siblings whose acting resumés include both film and TV credits – attended the 33rd annual Young Artist Awards in Los Angeles last month, where they were both up for acting awards. Donnie, 18, was nominated for Best Performance in a TV Laine MacNeil Series – Guest Starring (actors 14 to 17) for his turn on an episode of Hiccups, the CTV comedy starring Brett Butt and Nancy Robertson. He was pretty surprised to be nominated in a category brimming with other young hopefuls. “There’s a lot of big TV shows,” he said, back home in Cloverdale. “I just didn’t think they would consider a small show like Hiccups. It was amazing.” Younger sister Laine, 16, a four-time

nominee at the Young Artist Awards, took home a statuette for Best Performance in a Feature Film, Supporting Young Actress (14-16), for her work as “Patty Farrell” in Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Rodrick Rules. This was Laine’s fourth nomination and second win at the awards, which recognize children and youth for their work in the entertainment industry. Laine has acted in all three Diary of A Wimpy Kid movies. The latest, Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Dog Days, appears in Donnie MacNeil theatres Aug. 3. (This Sunday, Laine also appears in an episode of Falling Skies on TNT.) The gala ceremony was just the latest development in their burgeoning careers. Both siblings have been acting for several years, enjoying a kind of success – and honing a work ethic – that’s sometimes hard to explain to other kids their age. They started acting around the same Continued on Page 7

Goodbye penny, hello fundraising windfall By Jennifer Lang We’ve all heard of “penny pinching,” but the kids at George Greenaway Elementary may be taking it to extremes. A while back, the school’s Parent Advisory Council decided to offer up a challenge to students, asking them to raise money by bringing in pennies for the Good Bye Penny Drive, in response to

news the Canadian government is phasing out the one-cent coin. “We hoped for $400, which would be $1 per student,” principal Elsie Bertholm said, explaining there was also a challenge to see who could bring in the most pennies – the boys or the girls. “Well, the pennies just keep rolling in, one by one, bag by bag, jar by jar,” Bertholm said.

So far, the students have brought in more than $1,000 in pennies – that’s an astounding 100,000 pennies. The PAC parents have depositing pennies at the bank every week. Bertholm says the students will be rewarded with a popcorn and movie afternoon – one for the boys, and one for the girls.

Thanks for the story To the editor; Re: “A Voice For Cloverdale,” May 10 I want to thank the Cloverdale Reporter’s Jennifer Lang for writing an article about the Cloverdale Community Association. Because of this article, I received calls from local residents wanting to revive the association and on June 5, 2012, we met for the first time. The objective of the association is to deal with issues affecting the well-being and development of the community. This association is intended to provide this collective voice for all of Cloverdale. A reader responds – to another reader To the editor; Re: “You’re just sore losers,” May 31 Fred Perry, you profess to know whom I chose in the last election – so was that you sneaking behind me at the ballot box? I suggest you check your glasses as I did not vote as you erroneously guessed because I don’t myopically support an ideology, and will always hold a party to account whether or not they earned my vote – as we all should. Additionally, regarding your statement of

there being “no evidence the fictitious Pierre Poutine fooled anyone, let alone change(d) any election results”, I’d like to point out the following to you, and to the voters of this riding: • Last fall, the Harper Conservatives (including MP Russ Hiebert) voted down an opposition bill which would have given new audit/ investigative powers to Chief Electoral Officer, Marc Mayrand, in the robocall scandal. • The Harper Government recently cut Elections Canada’s budget by 8 percent (7.5

It’s wholly disingenuous to claim that there is no evidence of voter impact since the Conservatives initially stymied the investigation, then went on to cut the budget of the very agency doing the investigating. Letters...

Stretching the imagination To the editor; Surrey Mayor and Council want us to accept multiple suites in designated areas. If the City is unwilling or unable to enforce a one suite authorization it stretches the imagination to think they can enforce regulations allowing multiple suites in designated areas. So it will be open season for the law breakers – law abiding citizens, yet again, will pick up the tab. It is estimated that there already over 4,000 multiple suite homes, yet they are not allowed. There are, by conservative estimates, 20,000 unauthorized single suites and these homeowners are not paying taxes on these. In fact, Councillor Gill estimated the number to be in the 30,000 range. At a bargain rate of $240/year in taxes for these suites a minimum of $7.2 million dollars of additional revenue could be generated. But, hey who’s counting? Enforcement to retrieve this lost revenue would be a fraction of this financial gain, but this seems far too expensive for Surrey to even contemplate. As well, there is no effort by the City to ensure these unauthorized suites are brought up to electrical, gas and plumbing codes through the authorization process. This puts people at unacceptable risk. The City has stated more than once that they prefer negotiation versus litigation to bring these homeowners into line. For the lawbreakers, this is code for ‘Do whatever you want because there will be no consequences’. And, for those living outside Surrey the take-home message is, if you want to break the law without consequences, the City of Surrey welcomes you. We have been experiencing an example of the folly in the City’s thinking on this for sometime now. This goes up and above lost revenue. Our school children and their teachers are forced into unhealthy and inefficient portables due to overcrowding. The cost of portables comes out of the school board’s operating budget, not the province’s capital budget for schools. Yet the finger of blame is pointed at the provincial government. But school capital expen-

ditures are based on anticipated student numbers within defined catchment areas. These numbers are based on planning and zoning. When the City turns a blind eye on unauthorized suites (single or multiple) this throws all the planning out the window and more students need to be accommodated up and above the planned capital expenditures for additional schools. I’m calling on law abiding Surrey citizens to: 1. Absolutely oppose any move to multiple suites; 2. Insist that the City of Surrey enforce authorization of all existing unauthorized suites and ensure these meet all applicable building codes; 3. Insist that the City be far more open and transparent to the citizens of Surrey and build the trust that is currently so lacking.

Calling on the Caring Hearts of Cloverdale

Let’s get these guys

Request for Silent Auction Donations

Dylan Battye is a Grade 10 student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary who is in need of our community’s support. Dylan is a strong, athletic young man in top shape. He is a member of our school’s football team, as well a member of the Canadian National Ball Hockey team which is travelling to the World Juniors in Czechoslovakia in June. Unfortunately, Dylan will not be able to join them.

Fundraising Event

June 15, 2012 6:00pm Thirsty Penguin Grillhouse Langley Twin Rinks,

Just over three months ago, Dylan contracted what his family and doctors originally felt was a bad cold. However, within a week, Dylan was put in a drug induced coma at Children’s Hospital on life support, with his doctors at a loss as to what sort of virus was attacking him. Dylan is on his way to recovering, but due to complications from this illness, he has lost part of his leg and his dream of competing internationally has been shelved for the near future. Our Cloverdale family – his friends, teachers, teammates and coaches, would like to support Dylan in his recovery and encourage him to pursue his dreams. We are fundraising to purchase an athletic prosthetic. Your company can assist us by providing a donation of goods / services for a silent auction at a fundraising evening at 6:00 pm, June 15, 2012 at the Thirsty Penguin Grillhouse, Langley Twin Rinks, 5700 Langley By-Pass. All donations will be processed through Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School. Cash donations can be made to the “Dylan Battye Trust Account” at any Envision Credit Union location. This event is endorsed by the Lord Tweedsmuir Parent Advisory Committee. We thank you in advance for your support of the Battye family.

Local on scene with beached humpback By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale’s Marlene Delcourt went to White Rock’s East Beach hoping to help a stranded baby whale Tuesday morning, moved by its heartbreaking plight. Sadly, the emaciated juvenile humpback succumbed by the time Delcourt arrived on the scene. She shared some of her photographs with us. (See www.cloverdalereporter.com.) At presstime, the cause of death had not yet been determined, but it appears there were lacerations and open wounds on the whale, which was wrapped in fishing line, according to reports. The whale was spotted on the sand sometime after 5 a.m. but succumbed about an hour and a half later. At around 9 a.m., officials set up a perimeter around the carcass, which drew hundreds of onlookers. Some people paid their respects by placing flowers on the whale’s head. Members of the Semiahmoo First Nation performed an honour song and blessing for the whale. When Delcourt learned rescuers needed help pouring water over the whale using buckets, she

The Best Father I am a proud dad, and I look forward to Father’s Day, coming up in a couple of weeks. On this day, we are especially reminded of the important role that fathers have in raising up the children we have been blessed with. When our children are young, they give us hand-drawn Father’s Day cards expressing their love. At the end of the average work-day they run to greet us shouting, “Daddy’s home!” Their admiration is also a humble reminder that they love us even though we often fall short in being the fathers we want to be. This love that our children give us can encourage us as fathers and mothers. We serve as examples to them as they observe our every action and hear the words we speak. For some of us however, Father’s Day may be a reminder of how our own fathers have failed us. For some of us, our fathers did not provide a good foundation or provide us with a good example of how we should act with our own children. The shortcomings of our earthly fathers can sometimes serve as an encouragement to be different, so that our own children can have a better example to live by. The best guidance we have for this is God Himself. In Matthew 5:11, we are reminded that “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.” This heavenly Father will never forget us or be unfaithful. He can heal us from our hurts and restore relationships. This column is sponsored by the

“Dog days of summer” can be dangerous Pet Expert

Neighbourhood Bible Study at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to remind pet guardians across B.C. about the serious consequences for pets left inside cars on hot days. Every year, the SPCA receives hundreds of complaints about dogs left in hot cars because many people still don’t grasp the danger of this situation. Even if you park in the shade and it seems cool outside when you leave, Lorie Chortyk the sun can change direction and heat up a car’s interior in no time. Many people assume they will be just a few minutes at a bank or convenience store, only to be delayed and return too late to save their pet. With an outside temperature of just 26 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside a parked car at this time of year — even one that’s in the shade with the windows cracked — can climb to above 37 degrees Celsius in just 10 minutes and 43 degrees Celsius in 20 minutes. A dog’s normal temperature is 38 degrees Celsius. At 41 degrees Celsius, your dog begins to suffer irreparable brain damage or death. If you see a dog languishing in a hot car, please call the SPCA, animal control or local police in your area. Before the authorities arrive, members of the public can help prevent a tragedy by attempting to find the animal’s guardian. If the car is in a mall or grocery store parking lot, for example, ask to have the owner paged over the building’s PA system. Return to the car to monitor

the dog’s condition. In addition to not leaving pets in the car at this time of year, guardians should use caution when exercising their pets under the sweltering summer sun. A lot of dogs will run and play to the point of exhaustion, and it’s the guardian’s responsibility to make sure that doesn’t happen.
