From Burma to Surrey A revealing glimpse into the lives of the Karen community By Jennifer Lang Surrey is home to hundreds of Karen refugees from Burma. Meet six of them at the Surrey Museum, where their stories are part of a collaborative exhibit that offers a revealing glimpse into the lives the Karen people left behind and the new lives they’re building in Surrey. Community Treasures: Surrey’s Karen Community includes work by Candy Marvel, photographer Sheena Wilkie, video footage by Hans Christian Berger, and research and editing by Raymond Nakamura. The Karen people form the largest ethnic minority in Burma, where the military forced them to flee for their lives into neighboring Thailand. The Karen people have been recognized as a distinctly vulnerable group by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They have little hope for a safe return to their homeland in Burma, which is a military dictatorship called Myanmar. Many of the 140,000 Karen refugees lived in refugee camps for more than 20 years. Some 800 Karen people arrived in Canada in

2006, and about half settled in Surrey, where they’re adjusting to a new life. It’s a story told through pictures, video footage and a few, everyday belongings that the participants were able to bring with them. A wrinkled notebook is displayed to show neat lines of curlicue script filling two facing pages. These handwritten hymns are sung by a youth choir that has a Karen service twice a month. There’s also a bible used in a refugee camp by Paw Thi Blay Htoo Kee, whose father was a pastor. Most Karen are Christian.
The six individuals shared their stories via video. In one interview, a woman describes learning to use light switches and cook meals without a fire – and gives voice to the frustrations of trying to find a family doctor in her new community. It’s on display to July. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 - 56A Avenue, It’s open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed Sundays, Mondays and statutory holidays. “There were 200. There were 16,000 sales in three weeks.” As of midday March 7, total sales of the e-book version of My Temporary Life (available in e-book, to “borrow” online or in print) were at 66,716 and 2,747 readers had borrowed it by paying through online options. Readers are giving his book rave reviews; 48 out of 50 gave it five stars and the positive comments keep coming in. “It’s a great time to be a writer ... (being self-published online) means I can get my work to readers much faster,” Crosbie said. Metro Vancouver social media specialist Dave Teixeira agreed the online world is “terrific” – not only for writers, but for musicians and artists of all kinds. “It really levels out that playing field,” he said. “With the advent of e-books, Kindles and eReaders, it’s a great way to get your work out there. The challenge with anything online is that there’s no filter.” If recent sales numbers are any indication, however, Crosbie’s book is becoming a fast favourite with readers around the world. “I get emails every day from around the world,” he said. “On Twitter, there was a guy from Taiwan asking about the book cover. They come from Luxembourg, from Australia ... from everywhere.” My Temporary Life is a work of literary fiction that crosses over into a mystery/thriller according to a release. It is the

Not a proper puppy pit stop People are purposely bringing their pets to the cemetery to do their, ahem, business Dear Cloverdale Dog Owners; I am beyond angry and disappointed at the West Cloverdale/ Five Corners residents that believe Surrey Centre Cemetery is their personal dog park and toilet. My sister has been buried at the Surrey Centre Cemetery for just over a month now. In that time I have run across several dog owners in the neighborhood, especially in the mornings (7 a.m.-7:30 a.m.) who apparently can’t read signs, or notice the memorial markers, or the veteran’s grove (cannon and flag and bench) or the flowers on the graves, and think that it is okay
Robo call scandal taps into outrage
to let their dogs use the graveyard as a toilet! Yes, you read that correctly, a toilet. These dog owners are purposely bringing their dogs to the cemetery and using it as a toilet/ dog park! They are beyond ignorant and disrespectful! Several times I have questioned dog owners as to whether or not they know they are in a cemetery. Granted I could probably have been politer in my questioning but the responses from the dog owners have been downright rude and irresponsible. Here is a sample of them: Are you from the City? No I
To the editor; It appears Canadians are just waking up, outraged by the apparent widespread electoral fraud which may have stolen an election. The Vancouver day of action rally from the Vancouver Art Gallery to Victory Square concerned the “robo-call” electoral fraud scandal associated with Mr. Harper’s party but it goes further than that.
The Cloverdale
am not, does it matter? Your dog is peeing/pooping on someone’s grave. Do I have to be from the city for you to understand that this is wrong on so many levels? Well I have people here too (in the cemetery). Really, oh, I am sorry. Please then, let your dog defecate and urinate in the cemetery because obviously if you know someone buried here, then it’s not disrespectful at all. Or my favorite: S/He (the dog) is on a leash. Oh I see. Sorry. It’s totally okay to use a cemetery as a toilet for your dog if it’s still leashed, and you are now standing right beside it watching it defecate
Two abuses of prorogation to usurp the power of parliament and challenging the authority of the representative of the Queen, the Governor General. A finding of contempt of parliament, unprecedented in the history of the Commonwealth, resulting in a vote of non-confidence in the Harper government and its fall. Now we find that the election
and/or urinate on people’s loved one’s final resting place. So sorry to interrupt, please continue. If you live in West Cloverdale/ Five Corners (the area around 60th and 168th) and you own a dog and let it defecate and/or urinate in the cemetery and/or purposely take them (the dogs) there for “exercise” then you are a complete imbecile with no moral compass! Residents of Cloverdale, have some respect, do not use the Surrey Centre Cemetery as a dog park or toilet for your canine friends. Niamh Kavanagh Cloverdale resident may have been a stolen election; its result, a majority, bought with electoral fraud. This is not the Tory party Canadians know and vote for. These are not Progressive Conservatives. This is not democracy as Canadians understand it. This is a time for accountability. Brian Marlatt White Rock

They’re good as gold Adventurous Cloverdale teens earn gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards By Tricia Leslie For two local students, it’s a lofty honour in recognition of substantial character-building achievements outside the classroom. Stephanie Blain and Kaite McKay of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary were among 112 British Columbia students who were awarded Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards late last month. Canada’s Governor General David Johnston was among the dignitaries presiding at the honours, presented at a ceremony at the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel, where nearly 500 people gathered. The Gold Award represents the highest level of achievement for participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, a selfdirected development program for young people. Participants work their way through levels in community service, skills, recreation, and adventurous journey. A fifth level is required for participants at the Gold Award level: they must be away from home with new people for at least five days. McKay, a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary 2010 grad, completed her bronze, silver and gold requirements from Grades 9-12 by volunteering her time to interactive and student council duties, being physically active with soccer, at the gym and on a canoe trip in Scotland with other students while also learning to drive (skill). Her gold expedition was a horseback riding trip through the countryside of France for several days. “It was a lot of fun but the physical aspect was challenging,” McKay said. “A few hours on horseback is fine. Days of it is a whole different story.” There were a few rough spots along the way, such as having to throw all her bedding away early in the trip, due to a bedbug infestation. But on the plus side, the mountainside journey that meandered

through little French villages where no one speaks English was like no other. “These were once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” said McKay. Ditto for Blain. Blain, a Grade 12 student at LTS, travelled to Kenya with a school group and completed various volunteer commitments ranging from playing piano for seniors to helping out with a local African children’s choir. She is co-president of her school’s Interact Club and also runs, bikes and takes martial arts training. Her gold expedition was a canoe camping trip to Wells Gray Provincial Park. “I really liked the canoe trip,” Blain said. “I definitely would encourage others to get involved. It gives you opportunities you normally wouldn’t have.” Speaking at a recent Duke of Edinburgh awards presentation, Johnston called the Duke of Edinburgh Awards a wonderful tribute to the talent and determination of youth.

in brief especially in high traffic locations,” says Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger. Last year approximately 25 per cent of Surrey’s 21 fatal traffic collisions involved pedestrians. Surrey RCMP Traffic Section will be issuing tickets for such infractions as pedestrian jaywalking, crossing against lights or walks signals, and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. The fines for these types of infractions range upwards of $109. – Cloverdale Reporter

Q
Are You Thinking of Purchasing a Home Soon?
A
When purchasing a home, you are faced with a multitude of decisions! While at your side each step of the way, the Lunders will make the process of purchasing a home easier, more enjoyable, less time-consuming, and less expensive than if you undertook this challenge on your own.
Meniscus/cartilage has a poor blood supply. Small peripheral tears that do not transgress the whole cartilage can heal. If you have a full blown tear the chances of healing completely are poor. The degree and type of tear can be determined by a MRI. It is important to correct any biomechanical abnormalities, to prevent further degenerative changes and to enhance stability and mobility of the knee either pre or post surgery.
2) Assess foot posture and footwear to decrease loading of the knee joint.
4) Physiotherapy modalities that stimulate healing include laser, electromagnetic therapy, ultrasound and interferential.

I didn't get any results from my last ad. Why try again? It often takes more than just one ad to create awareness or generate results. Just as you wouldn't expect to go to a weight loss clinic for one week and lost 20 pounds, you shouldn't expect a single ad to perform similar overnight miracles. It takes time to develop awareness. Keep in mind that you can increase response many ways, from increasing the frequency of the message to trying different and more exciting offers.
Give us a call. We can help make advertising easy and effective.

The Strength of Teamwork... The Reputation for results.
Everyone knows who we are. Why advertise? Every business has competition. So, even if you're the "only game in town," you're probably competing with direct mail, catalogs and Internet shopping. If your competition is reaching your potential customers and you aren't, you'll lose sales. What's more, studies show that nearly 50 percent of Canadians move every five years. Through advertising, you increase the likelihood of replacing customers lost due to attrition. Plus, people need to be reminded of your business, or they are likely to go to someone who is advertising.
Children are recommended to have at least one hour of physical activity per day. It is never too early to start good habits. You should always make sure that your daycare allows for outdoor play every day ( weather permitting). If weather does not permit, there should be adequate space inside to have a bit of a run. At KidZrock we not only have two onsite play areas, we have access to an elementary school as well as gym space and skating and swimming lessons. Our ďŹ eld trips include outdoor parks and indoor adventure playgrounds. Even our preschoolers use the gym time and ďŹ eld trips!

I would suggest a biomechanical assessment and a customized kinesiology rehabilitation program. Your response to the program would determine whether conservative measures would help.

Is it safe??? My brake warning light & ABS lights are on. Am I safe to drive? If your brake warning light is on it could be you forgot to release the parking or emergency brake before you moved from a stationary position or the brake pedal switch may not be working properly. If the brake warning light comes on when you apply the brakes you could have a situation in which you are low on brake uid or have a loss of brake uid due to mechanical failure. Brake uid loss can be dangerous and cause the brakes to fail. ABS or anti lock brake light indicates a fault with in the ABS system and should be looked at. In an emergency situation you may not have the braking ability you thought. In any of the above situations it is never safe to drive with warning lights on and it should be inspected / diagnosed by a qualiďŹ ed service professional.

Q
When does a denture need replacing?
A
Dentures should be replaced every five years. Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health. Here are some of the signs indicating that your prosthesis should be checked: • Sore and irritated tissues • Problems with chewing certain foods • Thinning lips, sagging mouth, a change in facial features • Loose, falling out when speaking or laughing • Has discolored or has an odor • Headaches, neck, or ear pain • Your partial is kept in your pocket most of the time.
