A century later, electric rail dream endures

A fashionable form of transit in 1911.

By Jennifer Lang The Interurban was a modern suburbanite commuter’s dream. For four decades, it was possible to step on board an electric passenger railcar in Cloverdale, and ride in comfort to New Westminster, downtown Vancouver or even Chilliwack in less time than it would take to drive there today. In its heyday from 1911 to 1950, the British Columbia Electric Railway, or BCER, transported people, goods and gossip between Vancou-

Surrey Museum staff also delved into the collection to find pre-and post-electric objects such as toasters, vacuums, a hot plate and an electric egg candler used by dairy farmers. Telephones at home and shop were another new arrival in the valley. The line was completed in 1910, but surveyors set out nearly a decade earlier. The shovel that broke ground on Aug. 25, 1902 is on loan from the New Westminster museum. The museum turned to an important local resource, author and train expert Henry Ewert, who shared his own collection of photographs depicting each of Surrey’s Interurban stations. There are also photos depicting the restoration of BCER Interurban 1225. In the early 1950s, the Interurban was winding down – a victim of North America’s growing love affair with the automobile. Most of the railcars were burned at the rail yard under the Burrard Street bridge in Vancouver, and destroyed.

Some cars were bought up by museums in the U.S., including BCER 1225, which ended up at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in California. The FVHRS acquired the car in 2005, and since then members have spent more than 17,000 hours restoring it to its original glory. This summer, it will be back on the rails on the original BCER line between Cloverdale and Sullivan. Fittingly, just last week crews

started laying the foundation of the new home of the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society, which plans to relocate its operations from Sullivan Station to 5554 176 Street, just steps from the original Cloverdale BCER station. Once complete, and the operations moved over, volunteers will begin offering limited passenger runs on weekends, possibly as soon as August, opening an exciting new chapter in enduring story of the Interurban. – BC Electric Railway: More than Just a Tram, runs to March 24 at the Surrey Museum.

No real winners Optics – and the timing – of B.C. Education Minister George Abbott’s tour of China are bad Education Minister George Abbott’s tour of China to promote B.C. education off-shore is one of the more bizarre features of the current war being waged over our children’s future. Even the most virulently anti-B.C. Teachers Federation pundits among us must be shaking their heads over the timing – and the optics – of his trip. It’s equivalent to a maitred’ singing the praises of the menu to potential customers while a grease fire rages in the kitchen. No matter where you stand on teachers’ contract demands, you must be aware that public education in this province is in trouble – particularly if you’re a parent wondering what will happen when your children are due to go back to school next week after spring break. The six-month ‘cooling-off ’ period legislated by Bill 22 has not reduced temperatures one whit. Indeed, they appear to be rising, judging by news coming out of the BCTF annual general meeting in Vancouver. Incensed by legislation that imposes a government-appointed mediator with a mandate of no net increases to the education budget – not to mention removal of limits on classsize and composition limits, plus a potential

tance to the legislation. Public sentiment, predictably, seems split between polarized forces on the verge of war. Even the limited job action undertaken by teachers has added uncertainty to the process of applying to universities and colleges by this year’s Grade 12s. The impact of further job action can only be guessed. With such a pressing crisis at hand, it would be understandable if parents are less than enthused about the impending certification of two more Chinese schools to teach the B.C. curriculum – a step which will give their students even greater access to our postsecondary institutions. To some, the message seems to be that Abbott cares more about fee-paying foreign students than conditions on the battle lines at home. Abbott may describe the certification – which would bring the number of off-shore schools teaching B.C.’s curriculum to 31 – as a “win-win for Chinese students and B.C.’s K-12 system.” When it comes to Abbott’s mandate, a winwin at home would seem far more important.

cut down. “People love them, and quite a few people phoned me and said, ‘What happened?’” Sometimes, the city posts notices in a park when trees are to be removed. That didn’t happen in this case, said Surrey’s manager of parks, Owen Croy, who acknowledged the city could have done a better job of informing neighbours of Clayton Park. In future, he said, “We will aim to do a better job of letting the public know.” It’s not known exactly how old the cherry trees in Clayton Park were, but it’s thought they were planted around the time the Surrey Lawn Bowling Club’s bowling green and clubhouse were constructed in 1969. Over the years, the ornamental, flowering trees grew as high as 12 metres, and boasted wide, shady branches, which was part of the problem. The double pink blossoms of the Kwanzan cherry are a prized sign of spring. They flower for about two weeks each April – unfortunately coinciding with the start of the lawn bowling season at Surrey’s only bowling green. In recent years, the shade created by the mature cherry trees created problems for the Surrey Lawn Bowling Club, which is home to one of the last remaining grass greens around. Most lawn bowling greens have been replaced with artificial turf. Croy said bent grass, the variety of grass used

on the bowling green, likes lots of sunshine and is prone to disease if it doesn’t get enough aeration. The long, leafy limbs of the Kwanzan cherry trees were a poor fit. In the autumn, falling leaves made for daily raking and blowing – a burden for the club, which is responsible for maintenance. “It’s mostly volunteers that care for the green on a daily basis,” Croy said. The shallow roots of the Kwanzan cherry trees also played havoc with the bowling surface and the club’s paved walkways, creating a safety hazard for club members. “It’s a hazard for anyone in the public who has mobility Bonnie Wright problems,” Croy said. Additionally, the trees are prone to opportunistic diseases and parasites. Thousands of Kwanzan cherry trees were planted across Surrey in the past 30 years, but many have since been removed and replaced. Subject to funding, long term plans call for the replacement of the grass surface with artificial turf at the bowling green at Clayton Park, which would create a year-round facility but would also increase the size of the bowling green – another factor that will be considered in choosing replacement species and where they will be planted, Croy said.

Canadian Museum of Flight receptionist Caitlin Ringland grins despite the rain as she plots her tropical escape.

Flying high, aloha-style Canadian Museum of Flight plans a Hawaiian-themed event By Jennifer Lang Has the cold, miserable March weather got you down? It sounds like what you need is a tropical interlude, aloha-style. Fortunately, the folks at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley have got your back. They’re organizing a High Flyin’ Hawaiian Night, complete with a Luau, live auction and a grand prize draw, where you can win a trip for two to wonderful, warm Waikiki. The March 31 event is the major fundraiser of the year for the museum, located at 5333 216 Street in Langley. “We wanted to get away from the formal gala format,” museum general manager Terry Brunner said. “So this year we decided to offer a Hawaiian vacation as a door prize and focus the event around a sun and surf theme.” Thanks to sponsors like Hawkair, Central Mountain Air, Harbour Air and Air North, there are some nifty items up for bid in the silent and live auction. How’s a fly-along with the formation team, Fraser Blues, sound, or a flight in one of the museum’s vintage aircraft? A houseboat vacation – donated by the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm – and a Gulf Island retreat are also on the block. Among the boxes of merchandise arriving at the museum is one that’s sealed and marked ‘From the Headquarters of Hawaii Five-O.’ “I don’t know what’s inside,” says Carla Deminchuk, one of the event’s organizers. “I’m

almost scared to look!” Several aircraft at the museum claim a Cloverdale connection. One, the Waco INF, a sport plane built in 1930, is the oldest flying airplane in western Canada. Cloverdale residents may recognize it from the former B.C. Transportation Museum, which closed in 1992. Another Cloverdale legacy, a Douglas DC-3 known as The Spirit of the Skeena that was moved from Terrace, is now also at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley. It was built in 1940, and ended its flying career with Trans Provincial Airlines as a spare parts ship. The Canadian Flight Museum is run by a non-profit society that has a membership of about 400. There’s a core group of volunteers who help rebuild

and maintain the planes. “We have lots of retired airline mechanics who are really invaluable,” Deminchuk says. “They donate all their services and time.” Over the course of 20 years, volunteers were able to painstakingly rebuild the Waco Cabin – the museum’s flagship plane, donated by Dr. Pickup, B.C.’s flying doctor – after obtaining the original manufacturer blueprints from the Smithsonian Museum. At its core, the museum’s goal is to preserve Canada’s aviation past as a living legacy to visitors and volunteers alike. As one museum volunteer noted, “We never know who is going to walk through the door. They may be elderly, troubled or lonely. We give them something to do. They

find a renewed sense of purpose,” the volunteer continued. “I recently had an epiphany: are we looking after the airplanes or are the airplanes really looking after us?” The event is the museum’s major fundraiser of the year. Proceeds will be used to maintain the museum’s aging hangar, which has a leaky roof but has undergone some recent improvements. Deminchuk says the hangar is so old, it’s thought to have been built for Canada’s first machinepowered flight – but others swear it’s older than that. Organizers are hoping to secure enough funding to pay for a new roof. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.canadianflight.org.
