Katie Stubbings is donating her pony tail.

By Jennifer Lang At 4 and a half, Katie Stubbings is a little older than most kids are when they have their very first hair cut. But there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation why her mom Tammy and dad Ryan kept her home from the salon. It took four years for Katie’s hair to grow into a pony tail that was long enough to donate to Angel Hair For Wigs, a program of A Child’s Voice Foundation. The non-profit organization makes and distributes wigs to children in Canada who have lost their hair to cancer or other childhood illnesses. Seven years ago – before Katie or her twin brother Evan were born – Tammy lost her auntie Val to cancer. “My aunt had to wear a wig during her battle, and had fun with all the different looks the

“It’s nice to know a little boy or girl is going to have some hair, if they want it or need it.” Her long, light brown locks – which had grown past her waist – were trimmed into a stylish bob that falls just below her chin. The hairdresser cut off an impressive 14 inches – two more than the 12 inches required to donate for wig making. Between 10 to 12 ponytails are required for just one wig, and they cost between $800 to $1,000 to manufacture. That’s why Katie also collected $275, so she could donate the money along with her hair. Katie wouldn’t say if she planned to do it again someday, but her mom isn’t ruling it out. “Her hair grows quite fast, so we can do it again if we need to,” Tammy said. wigs gave her,” Tammy said. When Katie was born, she surprised everyone by how much hair she had – and how fast it grew. “We decided we could grow her hair out and donate it as a memory to my aunt,” Tammy explained. When they heard about children losing their hair to cancer treatments, the family decided to donate Katie’s hair to a foundation that makes wigs specifically for children. The big day of Katie’s first hair cut finally arrived on March 13. The family went to Karen’s Corner, where family friend Karen Pelhke of Cloverdale did the honours. Katie was a little shy during her first visit to the hairdresser’s, but took it well, even if mom spouted a few tears. “It was pretty emotional. We were excited, but it was hard to see her hair go,” Tammy said.

Blue Monday

Cloverdale’s Julie Maccabee won’t be the only one wearing blue on Monday. Students and staff at George Greenaway Elementary will be wearing blue, too. April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Maccabee’s son, a Grade 2 student at George Greenaway, is one of the estimated 67 million people around the world who are affected by autism. People can show their support by wearing blue or by wearing an autism puzzle ribbon. The puzzle pieces reflect the mystery and complexity of autism, as well as the diversity of people and families living with the disorder. Now that he’s completed the program, he’s re-applied to work at Starbucks while he continues his studies at Cloverdale Learning Centre. “I think I look at myself and others in a completely different way, he said. “I have a new outlook on life, my goals, self-definition, self-discipline, and how to go about getting employment. Participants are placed at various Starbucks, including in Cloverdale. “Once you get settled, it’s really nice, Ferguson said. “It’s actually a really great place to work. Susan Johnson, the career development facilitator at Cloverdale Learning Centre, said the baristas program went deeper than other youth employment programs. “These are kids who come from abusive homes, no homes, and have multiple barriers, whether it’s addiction, or lack of self esteem, she said. Baristas program supervisor Siobahn Pires learned in November federal funding would be coming to an end. “We weren’t given an exact reason, she said. “Our funding has always comes through at the 11th hour. This came as a surprise. Although the program was launched in Surrey in 2003, more recently participants came from all over the Lower Mainland after the Vancouver barista program and a pilot project in North Vancouver were

closed down. “We were told they were no longer funding duplicate programs, Pires said. Over the past decade, 370 students have completed the barista skills program – 232 from the Surrey area. The society receives roughly 70 to 80 applications per ses-

sion. With only 10 seats available at a time, some 195 youth are turned away each year. “It’s frustrating, she said. “There’s going to be a lot of people looking for services that just aren’t available now. She praised Starbucks for standing up for the community’s youth in

the beginning and sticking with the program over the years. “Starbucks just provides a really open, non-judgemental environment for them to learn. That’s been huge. They’re really working with our youth. A lot of employers aren’t willing to take a chance.

A few more questions

For instance, should we wonder what it means for education when our premier’s son goes to private school? Re: Editorial “No real winners,” March 22 I agree with many of the opinions which were expressed in the piece which was printed last Thursday – there are currently many speedbumps in the education system and differences of opinion which are interfering with what could help B.C. to be “the best place on earth” for learning. As was suggested in your article, it is necessary to look at the situation from both sides, and to ask a series of good questions. A few of the questions which I would encourage families to consider include: In terms of current education funding, what is the ratio of funding for private versus public

On a similar note, should we wonder what message is being conveyed about B.C. education, when our own premier (and former minister of education) has her son enrolled in a private school? Of course this is a family’s choice, but it leads

ber of years that this is being spread across, and how specifically it will be used to alleviate earlier cutbacks in funding to districts. If more teaching assistants will be hired within the province, will they improve support directly for your son/daughter, or would smaller classes with fewer distractions be better? And finally there’s a question that I have been wondering quite a bit about lately: if the Liberals truly respect teachers and the teaching profession, what are they currently doing to show this? Perhaps there is more that they could do – or stop doing. S. Wohlgemuth

Lights out, everyone! Students at Clayton Heights Secondary are reminding Surrey residents to turn off the lights on Saturday. March 31 is the sixth annual Earth Hour. At 8:30 p.m., participants turn off the lights, and switch “off ” for an hour. The goal is to reduce energy consumption and to raise awareness. That means shutting off lights, powering down computers, and unplugging chargers and other electronic devices. Last year, more than 5,200 cities in 135 countries took part in this global initiative. Activities at Clayton Heights include raising awareness by turning off classroom lights for an hour this Friday, starting at 1:30 p.m., according to Grade 12 student Nalin Dhillon, who’s helping spread the word. British Columbia Earth Hour organizers WWF and partner BC Hyrdo are asking people to use the 2012 event as the push needed to take steps to save energy all year. Last year, they lost to cross-town rivals, Surrey, but overcame a number of obstacles along the way, including injuries. The plucky team had another stellar season this year, going undefeated in 34 games and 32 straight wins into the final game. In a show of solidarity, team members had dyed their hair blond before heading to the provincials. “We’re champions in our hearts,” team member Tyler Fyfe wrote on his Twitter account following the final game in Kamloops. The Colts won four tournaments this season, and have an overall record of 63-12-3.

By Jennifer Lang Delve into local history this spring, when the Surrey Archives presents a series of Saturday morning workshops. First up is Pioneer Profiles, April 14, from 11 a.m. to noon. What was it like to live in Surrey before 1900? This session will give participants a sense of Surrey’s early years by taking an in-depth look at three pioneer families: the Molyneux, the Triggs and the Sandells. Find out where they lived, why they came and what legacies they left behind. Newton, Surrey’s most populous town centre, was home to the city’s first indoor ice arena. But where does the name, Newton, come from, anyway? Find out more at Newton Photo Respective on April 21. This is a visual history of Newton featuring archival photos and maps.

President’s Message Spring has arrived and so has the excitement for Cloverdale. The Brick Yard Station is opening, the final plans are being completed on the old Safeway site and many other projects are underway in Cloverdale. Let’s all do a little spring cleaning and spruce up our operations so that these new shoppers can see our best and will become regular customers at our stores. It’s up to each of us to show our Cloverdale pride and make 2012 a banner year. Brian Young - President
