When is it about me? A teacher wades into the debate over extra-curricular activities and the ongoing labour dispute in education To the editor; This is my 11th year of teaching and every time our contract comes up people are mad because how the kids are affected. Does anyone care how I am affected? No! I put my heart and soul into my job and I love the things I do with my students. I volunteer my time every year For the Kids. I buy novels with my own money, for my classroom so there are books For the Kids. I stay in at lunch to provide extra help for the kids. For the last four years I have made a DVD of our year together For the Kids. I plan special days and events like Star Wars Day, Rodeo Day, and Minute-to-Win-it challenges For the Kids.

I am fighting against the government For the Kids, because I have seen the erosion of the education system since I started teaching. When is it my turn and when is it going to be about me? Never, because it’s always For the Kids. People need to remember that teaching is a job, we do it for the love of it and the paycheque. Let’s be honest, everybody works to have money. However, teachers and other professions that deal with kids or sick people for example, are apparently different. We are expected to go above and beyond expectations because we have to think about others first. In my job, I don’t have to volunteer for any-

To the editor; It is good that a Lower Mainland coalition of eight mayors are asking for the decriminalization of marijuana. While there are those who oppose this move on the grounds that pot is a gateway drug to more dangerous drugs, here is my opinion as to why they are both right, and wrong. If pot were a gateway drug then a large percentage of those over 50 would be either dead from overdose, criminally supporting a habit or just totally wasted each day from their addictions. That is my argument against the “gateway” concept. On the other hand, with pot as an illegal substance the only

thing, but I do. I love it too, but I also have a family that I love more. That is why I am stopping. So, I am going to do my job then go home and spend time with my kids because I can, and because of how the government disrespects me as a person and a worker. So the next time you want to say, “Those teachers should think about the kids instead of themselves,” I want you to think about my two kids whose parents are both teachers and how they miss out on daddy time because daddy is busy coaching someone else’s kid and doesn’t have time to play with you because it’s FOR THE KIDS! Ryan Stubbings

way to obtain it is through the criminal element, the pusher. The pusher, like any good salesperson/entrepreneur, will try to up-sell you to a more addictive and higher-profit product because the pusher’s only interest is making money. Pot is a gateway drug, but only if it is illegal. I hope the mayors’ initiative will spread to other mayors, MLAs, premiers and MPs throughout the country, bringing an end to the madness. Shoe madness hits Langley By Miranda Gathercole The early bird really does get the worm. Just ask the hundreds of shopaholics who lined up outside the Langley Army & Navy for opening day of the 63rd annual Legendary Shoe Sale. Mary Feist, the lucky lady at the very front of the lineup of 365 people, had been standing outside the front doors since 5:45 a.m. The sale didn’t start until 8 a.m. She drove from Osoyoos specifically to shop for shoes. Sarah Johnston, Alyse Charlton and Melanie Charlton came in a close second, thanks to the kindness of their grandmother. who arrived at 6 a.m. to hold a spot for them. Behind them were three girls from southern France who heard about the sale from the family they are staying with in Chilliwack. With all this hype, it’s no wonder this is the busiest day of the year at Army & Navy, said manager Sarah Cole. “This is our Christmas,” she said, motioning to the crowd of women hurrying past her to browse through the collection of shoes. “We pump the store up with stock and try to be as accommodating as we can.” Staff stayed behind long after closing hours

In search of bargains at Army & Navy.

to set up displays filled with hundreds of shoes for the massive sale. Pallets were brought into the showroom the day before and were covered in caution tape to make sure no one got a sneak peak of the

goodies inside. As soon as the doors opened, a bee hive of shoppers swarmed the shelves and filled their bags and baskets to the rim with shoes. Langley’s Julianna McLean figured she had at least

20 shoes in her basket. By the time 8:30 a.m. rolled around, many of the shelves already looked barren and the floor was littered with shoe rejects. Canada’s largest shoe sale features 103,246 pairs of designer brands at Army & Navy’s six locations, all priced under $40. More than 3.15 million shoes have been sold during the sale since the event started 63 years ago. The madness continues until May 6 with new stock arriving daily.

6 The Cloverdale Reporter Thursday, May 3, 2012 The study of performance by first-year physics and calculus students at UBC admitted from Metro Vancouver schools found those from public schools scored slightly higher than those from private schools. The UBC authors of the study suggested students who advance from public schools, often with less individual attention than at independent schools, may be better equipped or motivated to survive the sink-or-swim university environment. The study, which looked at 4,500 students from 2002 to 2006, also found those from Vancouver’s east side schools did better than those schooled on the more affluent west side.

Public school grads had edge A new study has contradicted well-worn assumptions that private schools better prepare students for university.

Food waste pickup ramps up

More cities within Metro Vancouver will soon prod their residents to put kitchen scraps and other food waste in green bins for curbside organic pickup instead of throwing it in the garbage. All single-family homes in North and West Vancouver are being offered kitchen scrap pickup along with yard waste starting May 1. Delta made the move in April and it’s to be followed by Pitt Meadows and Bowen Island in June and Surrey in October. By fall, organic food waste pickup will be offered part of curbside service in 16 Metro municipalities, leaving Maple Ridge, Langley City and a few smaller communities still to go. Organic material currently makes up 30 per cent of Metro’s waste stream. Helping people see since 1989 – Black Press

Cloverdale couple celebrates 50 years Contributed Long-time Cloverdale residents Henk and Diny Wendt (née Poll) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 18, 2012. Diny grew up in Oswold, Groningen, in the Netherlands on a small vegetable farm. She was the youngest of eight children. Her father was a vegetable salesman and her mother was the town midwife and mortician. Diny attended nursing school with her cousin Jelle. She worked in Wagonborgen, in Groningen. In May, 1960 Diny emigrated to Canada with plans to stay and work for one year. Soon after arriving in Canada she met her future husband at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jongs Sr. Henk grew up in Kampen in the Netherlands. He was the youngest of three siblings. His father was a fifth generation tailor and he owned a shop in Kampen. Hank and his brother George worked as printers.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Diny and Henk Wendt met when they were both relatively new to Canada.

On Sept. 18, 1952 the Wendt family packed up and immigrated to Canada. They first resided in Vancouver but later settled on Wedgewood Street in Burnaby. Henk worked in several different places before he started his long time career at Richmond Plywood. In 1960, Henk met Diny and

on August 5, 1961, he asked for her hand in marriage. They were married on Wednesday April 18, 1962 in New Westminster, B.C. Sietse Kobes and Opa Wendt signed for the bride and groom and Cathy and Fran Eenkhoorn were flower girls. The couple honeymooned near Mount Rainer

in Washington State and later settled in Burnaby. Six children were born to them while they lived there: Cathy, John, Ken, Grace, Henry and Paul. Their youngest son Mike was born after they moved to Cloverdale in 1975. Henk retired early due to various health concerns and then eight years ago he received a heart transplant. It gave him a new lease on life. Henk and Diny are able enjoy their retirement with family and friends. Occasionally they travel to the Netherlands to visit relatives and friends that they have kept in touch with over the years. Henk and Diny now have 23 grandchildren. As family we are thankful to be blessed with such wonderful parents and grandparents who have loved each other dearly and faithfully for over half a century. We wish them God’s blessings for many more years of health and happiness.

More like Mondo indigestion It’s almost May 5, and for local burrito lovers that can only mean one thing: it’s nearly time to belly up to the table at Taco Del Mar. The Clayton Crossing burrito bar is once again hosting its annual Cinco de Mondo Burrito Contest. The hulking burrito challenge involves chowing down on The Cinco De Mondo Burrito. It’s a massive, five-pound burrito rolled with four tortillas and stuffed with rice, beans, ground beef, and cheese – the equivalent of four-and-a-half “Mondo” burritos. Finish it off in half an hour or less, and you eat for free, in addition to claiming well-deserved bragging rights. Owner Jordan West also organized a similar challenge last September – and last year during Cinco de Mayo, a festive celebration commemorating a May 5 Mexican militia victory during the Franco-Mexican war. There will be two opportunities to take the challenge. The first is May 5 and the second is May 26.

Participants can take the challenge between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. both days. Anyone who wins the challenge will also receive a $20 gift certificate to the fast food outlet. – Cloverdale Reporter

My spouse snores like thunder. Do you have some natural remedies that might help?

A

“Snore-Eze Mix” is a homeopathic liquid taken internally, whereas “DMS Anti-Snore Spray” is a throat spray that is used at bed time. Both products works through minimizing the congestion of the soft palate thus opening up the air passage, reducing snoring and improving sleep apnea. “Snore-Eze Mix” works through internal immunity, whereas the “DMS Anti-Snore Spray” contains a natural substance called dimethylsulfone (DMS) that is a local decongestant. While the “DMS AntiSnore Spray” works on the lower surface of the soft palate, we can also target the upper surface with Luffeel® Nasal Spray (Heel). No side effect had ever been reported.

Everyone knows who we are. Why advertise? Every business has competition. So, even if you're the "only game in town," you're probably competing with direct mail, catalogs and Internet shopping. If your competition is reaching your potential customers and you aren't, you'll lose sales. What's more, studies show that nearly 50 percent of Canadians move every five years. Through advertising, you increase the likelihood of replacing customers lost due to attrition. Plus, people need to be reminded of your business, or they are likely to go to someone who is advertising. I didn't get any results from my last ad. Why try again? It often takes more than just one ad to create awareness or generate results. Just as you wouldn't expect to go to a weight loss clinic for one week and lost 20 pounds, you shouldn't expect a single ad to perform similar overnight miracles. It takes time to develop awareness. Keep in mind that you can increase response many ways, from increasing the frequency of the message to trying different and more exciting offers.

Give us a call. We can help make advertising easy and effective.

We are considering putting our house on the market. However, for a good portion of the time my spouse is going to be out of the country. How should we proceed with this? The best solution is to have a lawyer or notary draft up a power of attorney for you. This is a legal document that allows someone else to sign on your behalf. If your spouse has an arrangement where you can email or talk long distance then you could sign the document on your spouse’s behalf. Another option is a procedure called e-sign, which allows your Realtor to email the documents to your spouse so everything can be signed electronically.

How do I choose a good Taekwondo school? Make an appointment to visit the school and talk to an instructor. You may be involved in Martial Arts for years so talk to others at the school. Many of our students have been training with us for over 5 years and most new students are recommended by others who have heard about, or train at our facility. The minimum that a good Taekwondo School should have is: • Certified Instructors - Instructors properly trained to assure that you will get quality instruction. • Safety floor - Cushioned floor to reduce falling injuries and minimize the effect of impact from active movement. • Adequate floor size - Training floor should be large enough to allow full range of motion. • Positive Atmosphere - When you walk into your Taekwondo School you should look forward to a bright, positive environment • Well Rounded Program - At our Academy there are many exciting opportunities. Training with Masters...Regional, National and World level competition...demonstration teams...XTreme, leadership and instructor training... Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… advanced self-defence, weapons....the list is endless. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy we are proud of our students’ comments on the positive atmosphere of the school and how much they enjoy their training.

Postie’s true identity revealed

Purified Water 778-571-1008

Reporter readers have helped solve a minor mystery, thanks to their online comments at www.CloverdaleReporter.com. They’ve helped reveal the full identity of Andy, the popular postie who recently moved on from his route in downtown Cloverdale, after a delivery route update by Canada Post (“Popular Postie on the move,” April 19). Despite our best efforts, Andy wouldn’t reveal his name to the Reporter, one of the stops along his former delivery route, where he was a hit with office denizens and shopkeepers alike. He delivered mail to 102 businesses for the past four years – and much longer in some cases. “His name is Andy Colton,” wrote Brad Marlin, a project manager at PNI digital media. “OMG... that’s awesome!!!” added online reader Jackie Russell, who also referred to Andy’s penchant for dressing festively at Christmas time: “I had no idea but that must have been him in shorts and a Dr. Seuss Santa hat!” Sandra Fairfoull Marshall, possibly a former schoolmate, concurred: “He was always such a nice, kind guy in school too,” she wrote. “Well done, Andy!” Andy was headed to Boston for the recent marathon, followed by some vacation time before starting his new route. Someone with his name completed the marathon in 4:44:18. Congratulations, Andy!

The intriguing sport of canine freestyle was showcased last weekend at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, where local canine club Paws 2 Dance presented Prancing Paws. Billed as an afternoon of canine musical freestyle and dressage, Prancing Paws featured entries from across the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and Washington State. Canine freestyle features choreographed routines involving a dog and handler, costumes and music. Spectators were invited to watch the participants compete from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Alice McKay Building. The event was a fundraiser for Paws 2 Dance, a local club based in Cloverdale. Any proceeds from the event will go towards the club’s upcoming play, Shadows of Eternity, presented Nov. 3 and 4 at the Bell Centre for the Performing Arts. Rediscover God & Church

12 The Cloverdale Reporter Thursday, May 3, 2012

They’re hiring Starbucks is the latest business to announce it’s hiring staff for its new outlet in Brick Yard Station, a shopping plaza soon to be opening up in Cloverdale. The popular coffee chain is opening a location there later this month, making it one of the first businesses to open its doors at the long-anticipated Anthem Properties Ltd. development, located at the northeast corner of Highway 10 and the 176 Bypass. Last Thursday, Janet Howell said the management team for the new Cloverdale Starbucks is already in place, but added she needed to hire seven more people, bringing the number of employees to 12 to 14. The opening is planned for May 31, with a a special friends and family night planned for May 30. Major tenants at Brick Yard Station include Staples, Rexall’s, CIBC, Original Joe’s Restaurant, Clancy’s Meat Co., and Vera’s Burgers. Last month, Staples hosted a three-day job fair to hire new staff for its location at Brick Yard Station. Other confirmed tenants include Quiznos, an insurance company and dentist, Into Chocolates, and Chronic Tacos. The mall has been designed in keeping with Cloverdale’s heritage rail theme. Historic black and white photographs have been enlarged and

mounted on the sides of some buildings. Construction will be completed this spring, with a grand opening this summer. Starbucks has several other locations nearby: Cloverdale Crossing at 176 and 64 Avenue and at Clayton Crossing at 18737 Fraser Highway, and at 17967 56 Avenue (Highway 10.) – Cloverdale Reporter

Occupy White Rock Members of the group British Columbians for Climate Action – who want the export of coal from B.C. phased out – are planning to occupy the BNSF rail line near the White Rock pier for 24 hours starting at midnight Friday. Member Peter Nix said the aim is to block U.S. coal trains from travelling to the bulk-coal terminal at Roberts Bank. Amtrak and BNSF are being informed of the protest, he said, and the aim of the group is not to disrupt passenger or freight traffic – only coal trains. The group is also inviting local residents to come to the protest site near White Rock pier to either “join or bear witness to this event. Nix said he fully expects protesters to be met by police and security personnel.
