Close call for local father Jordan Hugh, centre, with sons Kylar and Dallas.

By Jennifer Lang A young family is reaching out for love and support of the community in the wake of an accident. Two weeks ago, Jordan Hugh, 29, suffered a fall at work that resulted in a head injury and a fracture in his neck. He was installing siding at a home in West Vancouver when he slipped and fell, landing head first on a rock.

The father of two young boys was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, where he needed 50 stitches to patch him up. A loving and kind-hearted father, Jordan is in a great deal of pain because the injury has caused massive swelling to his head. He has also fractured his C7 vertebrae, putting his spinal chord potentially at risk.

gage that we bring from elementary school,” said school music teacher Paulina Pekova, another Link Crew coordinator. “We’re going to do a run-through of the time

table and they’re going to be trying all their locker combinations,” Pekova said. “It’s all these little tiny miniscule things that we take for granted but cause anxiety,” she said.

“We’re trying to make it a positive experience from day one.” Besides making the students feel comfortable and at ease in their new surroundings, the program aims to front-

end load them with information, such as how to get good grades and what clubs and sports they can sign up for. Relationship building and establishing connections with their

peers and other students is another focus. Future activities include organizing an official cheering group for the Surrey Marathon, a pumpkin carving contest, and study skills session.

The aim is to put kids on a positive path right from day one, rather than wait for problems to arise; nobody shows up for their first day in high school planning to cut classes or create trouble, she said. Link Team members, teachers and administrators will be wearing their blue t-shirts for the first couple of weeks, so help and a friendly face is easy to find. To Pekova, it says a lot about the commitment of everyone involved that in order to participate, the student mentors willingly gave up three days of vacation. But maybe it’s not so

surprising – nearly every senior student consulted on the program said they wished there had been something like the Link Crew in place for their first day of high school. “In 20 years, when they look back on their first day of high school, they’re not going to remember what we said today. They won’t even remember the things they did. But they’re going to remember how they felt,” Pekova beams. “We want them to feel like they’re part of our community, that they belong and that we care about them.

Election map talks The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. is set to hold public hearings throughout the province this September and October on its new federal electoral map. People are invited to express their views before the commission makes its final decision about how the boundaries will change. The redrawing would give Surrey a fifth MP and a new federal riding. Cloverdale and Clayton would be split off from the existing South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale riding, leaving a South Surrey-White Rock riding in the south and a new Langley-Cloverdale riding. A public hearing in Surrey will take place at the Sheraton Guilford (15269 104th Ave.) on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Written comments will be accepted by the commission until Oct. 18. The Twitterverse reacted fast and furious to Surrey-Cloverdale MLA’s decision to bow out of politics (for now?) There are times when the social network Twitter functions like an unruly Grade 9 classroom where everyone’s passing notes behind the teacher’s back. Which is why it’s fun. Last week’s announcement by B.C. Liberal cabinet minister and Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon that he won’t be running in the next provincial election was one of those times. Uncharacteristically, he took to Twitter to break the news – just as he was facing reporters at the Aug. 29 press conference telling them the same thing. A multitasker through-and-through. “After 12 yrs in public life Im stepping down as Min of Fin & not seeking re-election. Thx to my colleagues/constituents,” he posted to his nearly dormant official @KevinFalcon account, apparently surprising no one. In an official statement on his website, Falcon cited a desire to spend more time with his growing family (baby number two is expected early in the new year). Reactions on the social media

hospital. Jessica says the family is going to need a lot of support while he heals; her husband faces a long recovery. It will be awhile before he can return to work or resume other activities. “Jordan is going to need your uplifting words, a visit every now and again, and some home cooked meals,” she wrote on a Facebook Page she set up immediately after the accident. Called The Jordan Project, the page is means of positive outreach to help deal with the aftermath of accident and to offer her husband support. The page has acted as a communications hub, allowing family and friends to remain in contact, reading updates on

Jordan’s progress and enabling them to channel their efforts at assisting the family. “It effects a whole community of people,” she explained, adding, “We thank God every day that he’s alive.” Last week, a close friend set up an account on behalf of the Hughs on Meal Train, a website that helps friends and family cook and take meals to friends dealing with stressful events like surgery or illness. They can sign up for days and meal times they want to help out. The family is grateful for the overwhelming show of support, Jessica says. “It’s just amazing.” A fundraising website is in the works, along with plans to hold a fundraising event at the Town Hall Pub in Langley.

Meanwhile, Jessica is keeping busy looking after the couple’s young sons – Dallas, 2, and Kylar, 5 and a half, who entered Grade 1 at Hazelgrove Elementary Tuesday. Knowing the already devastating accident could have turned out much worse, the Hughs want to remind people of the importance of a safe working environment. Jessica says her husband is the sort of man who is always looking out for others, and going the extra mile. In light of his accident, he’s intent on sharing the reminder that construction workers should always wear their hard hat and harness on every job site and to refuse unsafe work, Jessica says. “You’ve got family who wants you home at the end of the day.”

Hurricanes roared in 2012

The Cloverdale Hurricanes roared this summer, capping off a fastpitch season coach Roger Werk describes as “incredible” with a gold medal at the B.C. Summer Games. “I am very proud of the way they carried themselves on and off of the field,” Werk said, praising their cohesiveness. “They played as a team all year.” July 13 to 15, they travelled to Clearwater for the U14 Rep Boys provincials, where they claimed gold and a 7-0 record, besting teams from Prince George, Merritt, Richmond, Clearwater, Fleetwood and Williams Lake. “Our bats really came alive this weekend,” Werk said. The boys didn’t let the stifling 40 degree heat knock them off their game against Richmond Mariners. The following weekend, nine of 14 team members competed in the B.C. Sum-

mer Games – seven on Fraser Valley 3, which won gold, and two for the Fraser Valley 3 Host team, which took bronze. “It’s a great feeling knowing you coach these boys and to see how great they played was really special,” Werk said. Over the B.C. Day long weekend, it was off to Ridge Meadows for the U14 Western Canadian Rep Championships. “We had great competition with the two teams from Saskatchewan and two teams from Manitoba.” The Hurricanes went 2-2 in the round robin, winning both games

against Manitoba teams but losing two to Saskatchewan teams. The game against the Saskatoon Phantoms was a nail-biter, with Cloverdale losing in the last inning by just one run. The Phantoms ended up winning gold, and Cloverdale claimed bronze. The team won gold at the North Surrey U14 tournament during the regular season, plus a silver in Fleetwood. “All in all it was an excellent season and I am very proud of all the boys.”

Summer-time brings travel. Road trips, camping, relaxing at the beach, hiking, and a host of other outdoor activities often accompany the warm season of summer. Whether revisiting familiar places or discovering new sights, we all feel the need to take a break to reenergize at times or to simply explore what’s around us. Taking such time out can lead us to change or re-align our perspective of the world, our place in the world, and our relationship with others. Nature Valley granola bars displayed a recent advertisement showing two people at the top of a mountain, overlooking a magnificent view, with this caption: “You’ve never felt more alive, you’ve never felt so insignificant.” Sometimes we need such “mountain-top experiences” to show us how small we are in comparison to God and his grand creation. And this feeling, so the ad suggests, is not a negative one. It implies that being centered on the self is a limited and unfulfilled way of life —that we are most “alive” when we are aware that Neighbourhood Bible Study there is something more significant than the self to behold. at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays The Bible teaches that a perspective from God’s point of view is desirable. Cloverdale’s Spurs are best in the west

By Rick Kupchuk With two wins on the final day of play, the Cloverdale Spurs have won the Baseball Canada Western Championship. The Spurs wrapped up a three-day tournament in Saskatchewan Sunday evening, defeating the host Saskatoon Blue Jays in the championship game. The Blue Jays led 3-0 after batting in their half of the third inning, but Cloverdale responded with four of their own. A double by Spencer Pawliw drove in the first two runs, and Tre Pankratz singled to bring in two more. Saskatoon regained the lead by the midway point of the fifth inning, but the Spurs did all the scoring after that. A home-run from Rhys Cratty and a run-scoring double from Pankratz put the B.C. team back in front. In the bottom of the sixth, Pawliw double to score Dryden Dion and Michael O’Toole, then scored himself on Wesley Moore’s single. The Spurs defeated Sherwood Park 11-5 in a semifinal contest Sunday morning. Tanner Carmont drove in three runs and scored twice, going two-for-three with a home run. Cratty also homered. Cloverdale went 2-1 (won-loss) in round robin play, placing second in their four-team group. They began play with a 14-4 victory over Winnipeg South last Thursday. Cratty hit his first of four home runs in the tournament, and was two-for-three with three RBIs (runs batted in) and three runs scored. They then lost their only game of the competition, 14-4 to Spruce Grove on Friday morning, a game that lasted just five innings. Down 8-0, the Spurs scored their four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Quinn Folick hit a solo home run, then Carmont belted a two-run double before scoring on O’Toole’s two-base hit. A 13-2 win in five innings over the Saskatoon A’s Friday evening clinched a playoff berth. Moore collected three RBIs, Cratty hit a two-run home run and Folick went three-for-four with three runs scored. Other members of the Cloverdale Spurs were Brendan Loewen, Tajan Harye, Dylan Kirby, Liam Vulcano, Adam Reston and Jack Opsahl.

Ortho-Eyes®.

Q

Is there a natural eye-drop that benefits age related eye problems?

A

NAC (N-acetyl-carnosine) in the form of eyedrops is known to remove damaged proteins from the eye. Victims of age related conditions like cataract and macular degeneration may experience improved eyesight, clearer vision, less tiredness and possibly a slowing down of the disease progress. In people with damaged cornea and in post laser surgery cases, patients may experience reduction in corneal haze and accelerated healing. The trade name of one such eye-drop is OrthoEyes®.

Q

What are the most frequent issues that an inspector finds during a formal inspection on a re-sale home?

A

The most common issue that inspectors find is a hot water tank that is ready to expire. Evidence of water behind the tile and grout in a shower is also very common. If grout has not been properly sealed over the years, the moisture meter is sure to read positive when the inspector measures it. Also, roof leakage, moisture in crawl space, unsuspecting rodents in attics and blocked drain tiles around the house are other items inspectors carefully examine. Wiring, leaky stucco or chimney issues are also common issues with re-sale homes. The furnace is also examined for maintenance and remaining functional life.
