Big boom in Clayton Population triples in five years, census shows

Hands down

By Jeff Nagel Surrey added more new residents than any other city in Metro Vancouver, according to the 2011 Census results. And while Cloverdale grew modestly over the past five years, East Clayton to the northeast boomed. Statistics Canada figures show East Clayton is now home to 14,034 people – more than three times the 2006 count of 4,132. It was the fastest growing census tract (a neighbourhood-level measurement) in Metro Vancouver from 2006-2011. Growing pains in East Clayton are well known to residents and local officials – the school district has struggled to provide enough school space to keep pace with the growing number of school-age children. The neighbourhood is less than a

Overall, Surrey’s population grew 18.6 per cent to 468,251 – up 73,000 since 2006. Newton was also a major growth area within the city. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts predicted the city is on track to pass Vancouver’s population in as little as 10 years. Although Surrey gained nearly 50,000 residents relative to Vancouver, not everyone is convinced it will be B.C.’s biggest city any time soon. Urban Futures demographer Ryan Berlin said Surrey would pass Vancouver in about 15 years if the pace of the last five continues. “But will development in 15 years in See GROWTH / Page 8

‘Walking Lady’ mourned By Jennifer Lang You may not have known her by name, but if you’ve lived or worked in Cloverdale for any length of time, you probably saw Olga Purgavie making her rounds. Perhaps you even shared a friendly “hello” and a quick chat as the outgoing grandmother strode past. Purgavie was an avid walker who logged up to 10 kms a day as part of her fitness routine. “She did it for years,” family friend Kevin Lunder recalled last week. “Every day, she was out. There are so many people that know her.” Sadly, a devastating illness pre-

vented her from continuing her wide-roaming walks in recent months, Lunder said. She passed away from cancer on Jan. 31 at the age of 71. Olga was a familiar face to many residents of Cloverdale. Lunder described her as a friendly woman who loved talking to people. “She was a real outgoing, happy lady,” Lunder said. Née Stanyk, Olga Purgavie was born in Edmonton, and moved to Cloverdale as a child, attending Surrey Centre Elementary and later Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. After she married her husband,

Archie, they moved to Newton where they raised their family. Olga worked as a purchasing agent for the Surrey School District for 35 years before retiring. When their sons Greg and Glen were grown, the couple moved back to Cloverdale in 1990. The pull of friendly Cloverdale proved irresistible to Glen, too. He and his wife moved here in 1991. Back then, his mom would walk from her home on 180 Street near 60 Avenue all the way to Fitness Unlimited in Langley – perform her workout – and then walk all the way home again. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Yoga for Hope It sounds like the ultimate yoga challenge – an all-day yoga class, for those who are up to it. On Saturday, Feb. 25, eight local instructors will lead a full day of classes in B.C.’s first-ever Yoga For Hope event in South Surrey. It’s a grass roots charity initiative that allows people to help make a difference in their community simply by participating in yoga. Stop by for a single class, or stay all day and sample different kinds of yoga classes. Best of all, Yoga For Hope is assisting SOS Children’s Village BC, a nonprofit organization that supports foster children and vulnerable youth. Its headquarters are located in downtown Cloverdale. Some definite star power will be assembled for the event, including Olympic slalom snowboarder and seven-time national champion Alexa Loo. Loo, an ambassador for SOS Children’s Village B.C., has challenged herself to a full day of yoga. Beth Sukha-Barker, creator of Yoga For Hope, will also be there.

Beginners to intermediate enthusiasts are all invited to grab their yoga mats and come on out to show their support – and get a fantastic workout. There will be a variety of options, ranging from two yoga sessions up to the full day of eight sessions. Participants who raise a minimum of $100 in pledges will get their day of yoga for free. Organizers hope to raise $10,000 for SOS Children’s Village BC, which operates five family homes in Surrey, along with a variety of outreach programs, including an after school homework club, the Sounds of Learning music program, therapy services, camps and more. Yoga for Hope is an annual event. This year it’s being held on two sides of the country; in Waterloo, ON, and at the Rotary Field House at South Surrey Athletic Park, 146000 Rotary Way, Surrey. (It starts at 7:30 a.m.) To register or for more information, visit www. yogaforhope.ca.

Passion for fitness blossomed From front page

That rather punishing workout seemed remarkable for someone at her stage of life. “She was, like, 58 years old?” laughs Glen. She wasn’t particularly athletic when she was younger, but once her kids were grown, her interest in fitness blossomed into a passion. Later, she focused on walking, which was “sort of her social life and fitness made her feel good.” Almost daily, she’d strap on her fanny pack and hit the road, working her way down 180 Street to Highway 10, then west to the historic downtown, over to 168 Street or even as far as Cloverdale Athletic Park on 64 Avenue, and back home again. She’d chat to acquaintances

along the way, taking care to check in with some of Cloverdale’s less fortunate residents. “She would always stop to talk to them and ask them how they’re doing.” With her warm smile and friendly attitude, she created a memorable impression, “strutting through the town like a soldier,” Glen says. “I run into so many people. They ask, ‘Where is she? What happened? Everyone seems to know her as the ‘Walking Lady’.” He describes his mom as extroverted, fun-loving and “always really, really positive, upbeat. She had a signature laugh that you would know from anywhere. She always liked to have a lot of fun.” If she couldn’t get out for a walk

for a few days, she’d be chomping at the bit to get outside. To everyone’s concern, Olga started to slow down last summer. That’s when she noticed she couldn’t walk as far. At first her symptoms were thought to be sciatica. But then she nearly couldn’t walk at all. It was an aggressive form of lymphoma. The tumour had attacked her spine. Olga was able to make it home for Christmas, spending a month with Archie, her husband of 53 years, before returning to hospital. A few days later, she passed away quietly in her sleep. Family and friends will gather for a celebration of her life on Feb. 24, 1 p.m. at the Langley Golf and Conference Centre.

Surrey’s perpetual growing pains are starting to pinch Infrastructure lags behind while growth continues; we’re on a treadmill that never ends

L

ast week’s census numbers showed Surrey’s population grew by 19 per cent, almost 75,000 new citizens, in just five years. To the growth-at-all-costs folks, this is good news for the economy. But for those of us who actually live in Surrey, who get stuck on congested roads and overcrowded buses, in crammed emergency rooms and in portable classrooms bursting at the seams, it’s the same old story. Mayor Dianne Watts says we must continue to develop at a breakneck pace in Surrey because slowing down – managing growth – would cost us jobs. At the same time, she wishes there were more hospitals, schools and buses, especially in chronically underserved neighbourhoods like East Clayton.

The responsibility for growth management ultimately lies with City Council. Surrey Council has failed miserably to negotiate key infrastructure improvements like new schools, hospitals, roads and enough buses. Despite this, they continue to approve almost every new development. When you don’t plan for growth, you suffer perpetual growing pains. Surrey’s infrastructure is constantly lagging behind its true needs while its rate of growth shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. It’s sort of like being on a treadmill that never ends. And it doesn’t appear that the city will be changing tack anytime soon. Surrey is pushing to build brand-new neighbourhoods out of vast areas of green fields in

The Final Act After three years, three productions, and a great deal of fun, the curtain is closing on Langley’s Murrayville Players. The community theatre troupe has decided to disband, citing a dwindling membership. Perhaps the MVP were victims of their own success. As time went on, members sought out other groups, expanding their experience in theatre, artistic director Kate Major said. “We are thrilled that they did branch out,” she wrote in a recent letter explaining the decision. “It makes the theatre community that much better.” The remaining members plan to keep in touch. Looking ahead, she says it’s possible that Surrey Little Theatre will launch a group for actors aged 55 and over, providing a new avenue for members who want to keep acting and involved in the theatre community. The decision to strike the set on the MVP means the defunct amateur acting group is looking for a new home for various items of scenery and movable props. “We want to get to get them out of storage by the end of February,” Major said.

Next stop Cloverdale Upcoming lectures offer a revealing look at the electric rail era By Jennifer Lang The BC Electric Railway – known as the Interurban – was a transit and transportation lifeline that operated for four decades. On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Surrey Museum hosts a special event in conjunction with its latest exhibition, BC Electric: More Than Just a Tram, on view to March 24. The exhibit looks at four decades of passenger and freight service on the BCER, which ran from New Westminster to Chilliwack, connecting communities of the Fraser Valley. Before there were highways or reliable roads in the Fraser Valley, the line transported lumber, dairy products and fresh produce to a growing urban population, in addition to a vital passenger rail service. It operated from 1910 to 1950, and Cloverdale – the busy transit hub – was at the centre of it all: students up the line hopped on at Scott Road or Kennedy stations to go to high school in Cloverdale, home of Surrey’s original high school. Riding the Rails from 1-4 p.m. is an all ages event featuring an afternoon of old-time railway fun. View displays from the Greater Vancouver Garden Railway Club, make crafts to take home and enjoy an afternoon lecture. It’s open to all ages, by donation. In Riding the Rails With a Paintbrush (1:30-2:30 p.m.) Langley artist Brian Croft, known for his highly detailed paintings of heritage landmarks of Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, narrates a visual tour of his paintings and

the history behind them. Many of his paintings chronicle the colourful BCER. Between 1:30-2:30 p.m., he’ll share how his research and paint process has created an ongoing historical record of the BCER’s interurban trams. His lecture is for ages 16 and up. Admission by donation. Croft’s work has been described as meticulously observed, lovingly created and intensely atmospheric. It’s visual history that breathes life and renewed understanding into long gone landmarks. That’s followed by History Speaks: The Story of BCER Car 1223 (from 3 to 4 p.m.). Lisa Codd, curator of the Burnaby Village Museum, will share the story of Interurban Car 1223 and how a team of professionals and volun-

teers painstakingly restored it. Coming up next month is another History Speaks lecture at the Surrey Museum. Automotive technician Miro Vavruska has earned a Masters designation from AirCare.

Local mechanic lauded By Jennifer Lang In December, local automotive technician Miro Vavruska received a special plaque from ICBC’s AirCare vehicle emission inspection program. Vavruska, who’s worked for nine years at Cloverdale Service, was recognized for attaining Master designation for excellence in certified emissions repair. The designation –

received after earning 10 consecutive quality repair awards from AirCare – means he’s certified for life. Jim and Sandy Dickson of Cloverdale Service are proud of Vavruska’s accomplishment. Sandy says only 10 to 12 automotive technicians in the Lower Mainland have attained this level of certification from ICBC.

There are five important questions you can ask when choosing a preschool for your child.

Q A Q A Q A

What is the staff turnover like? Research shows children have a harder time adjusting to school when there is a high staff turnover.

Q A

What is the guidance and discipline policy? It is always best to find a policy that focuses on redirection and problem solving among peers rather than “time out”

Q A

What do your instincts tell you? Watch your child: Is he relaxed and happy? Never underestimate the importance of your own instincts.”

Q

Do dentures last forever?

A

While it’s true that dentures are durable, they aren’t any more permanent than eyeglasses or shoes! Just as the condition of your eyes change, so does the condition of your mouth. Like the soles of our shoes that wear down due to friction, so do the teeth on our dentures! When your dentures become worn and ill fitting, your chewing becomes impaired and your ability to laugh and smile confidently is compromised.

What is the average class size? Preschool ratio should be minimum 1 teacher to 10 children with a maximum of 20 children. What’s a typical day like? Though all children need some structure, a good preschool program will include enough time each day for exploration, free play, and peer interaction.

Generally, dentures should be relined every 2 years and replacing them at regular intervals of 5 to 7 years makes it possible to maintain a healthy natural smile and prevent intraoral deterioration. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

Knee pain

Q A

I twisted my knee at work. My knee is now painful and swollen. What can I do? A forceful twist to the knee may result in injury to the structures of the knee joint, this is characterized by pain, swelling and instability. The fact that you did not fall suggests that your knee injury may have been the result of one of the following factors: Biomechanics - muscle imbalance of the back/pelvis and lower limb, weak core stabilizing muscles, faulty pelvis and foot alignment, leg length difference or poor lifting technique. Work Environment - unsupportive footwear, lack of cushioning, hard or slippery surfaces and sudden changes in floor gradient. Equipment - lifting/pushing or pulling heavy equipment in an unstable postural position causing a repetitive overload / overuse stress to the knee. SELF-HELP MEASURES Ice the affected area for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day. A knee wrap may help to reduce the swelling. Footwear ensure a good supportive shoe with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Lifting bend at the hips and knees keeping your back straight. Avoid lifting and twisting your body at the same time. Face the correct direction before lifting. Do not work in a crouched position for long periods of time. A physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help relieve your pain.

Q

A

Get Ready for Spring! What should I do to get my vehicle ready for spring? Generally our winters are harsh and our vehicles need some TLC come spring. Cleaning the inside and outside are natural starting points but mechanically we should make sure they get a “once over”. Utilize your local repair facility’s spring maintenance service to have a service and safety check performed which can offer you the peace of mind needed for spring / summer driving. Have your winter tires removed as dry roads can reduce their effectiveness. Evaluate the tires for their overall condition — will they be good for next year? Have belts checked for cracks & hoses, and checked for firmness. Have your coolant checked for proper pH and quality. Wipers. If you didn’t change them in the fall, winter conditions will have definitely reduced their overall effectiveness and a change would be in order.
