WHL rounds up seven Bantam Colts By Jennifer Lang What a fitting testament to the success of the Cloverdale Minor Hockey program. Last week, seven players from the Cloverdale Colts were selected in the WHL bantam draft. It’s a record number for the club and caps off another storybook season for the Bantam Colts. Just six weeks ago, the team claimed second spot at the BC Hockey Bantam Tier 1 championship tournament, a title they earned for the second year in a row.
The Cloverdale Colts Bantam AAA’s were undefeated in 34 games and 32 straight wins going into the final game at this year’s provincials, losing 5-6 to the Burnaby Winter Club. Last week’s draft was another first for Cloverdale. It was also the first time two players were picked in the first round – centre Tyler Soy, selected by Victoria Royals, was chosen eighth overall, and Parker Wotherspoon, 26th pick and selected by Tri-City Americans. “Victoria got a steal,” Colts head coach
Brian MacGillivray told Black Press, adding he thinks Wotherspoon will one day “play at the highest level. In my opinion, he’s the best defenceman in the draft.” The rest of the draft selections from the Colts are as follows: Jakob Stukel (Vancouver Giants), Chris Seto (Kelowna Rockets), Tyler Fraser (Tri-City Americans), Jordan Henderson (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Dylan McCann (Prince George).

Retirees in need of new homes – and pastures By Jennifer Lang If you’re looking to add a horse to your life, now just may be the time. That’s the word from Greener Pastures, the B.C. Standardbred Horse Adoption Society. With the spring harness racing season coming to a close this weekend at Fraser Downs, more retiring race horses will be coming off the track. Live harness racing resumes in August after a two-month summer break. Greener Pastures currently has nine horses on their adoption list, meaning they’re nearly at full capacity. By adopting, you’ll open up space for a new arrival at the South Langley facility. Greener Pastures finds good homes for retired Standardbred horses, a friendly, calm, and sensible breed that adapts well to the saddle. The horses are donated by racing owners who wish to have them placed in caring recreational homes. The society’s website features
296 success stories that have been written since the organization formed in 2003. To meet the horses currently up for adop-
tion, visit www.greenerpastures.ca, or text/call Alina at 778-549-9282. An adoption fee of $600 comes with a 30-day trial.

Will you be celebrating Mother’s Day with your mother this year? My wife and I will not, as both of our mothers live a few thousand kilometres away. This is not ideal for our family, as we will not be able to enjoy the day with them, but it is our reality – we made a choice to live here, our parents made a choice to live there. Others will not spend Mother’s Day with their mothers for other reasons, many of them possibly quite sad and unfortunate. Life’s circumstances are not always ideal. While our family will miss this special day with our (grand) mothers, we will not be lonely and miserable. We will, in fact, be surrounded with love anyway. Our family will be at FREE ANNUAL RODEO church, enjoying a day of worship and rest with other Christians who are PANCAKE BREAKFAST May 19, 2012 at home there. To us, church is not just a social club, a place for people to 8am-10am gather for weekly meetings. Instead, the Bible calls the church the “bride at the Church of Christ” (Revelation 21:9). Our groom, Jesus Christ, showed his love for Neighbourhood Bible Study his people by dying for us. This great love of Jesus for us is the tie that binds us together. Even though we are all from different walks of life, at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays through Jesus’ love we are one. And His love for us is our model for our love for each other. Children’s Bible School (ages 6-12) at the church, So, enjoy this Mother’s Day with your mother if you can. But also 10am to 12pm on Saturdays give thought to the love that the Groom of the Church has for his bride, and answer his call to share in the richness of the love that comes with belonging to his faithful church. The Clovamily reaches out Krissi Bucholtz was totally unprepared for the ‘whirlwind of love’ patrons showed for four families in Africa To the editor; Sometimes events take place which truly convince me of the overriding good of humanity. This weekend was one of those times. Over the past four years, I have been running a non-profit organization in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and I often do fundraisers within the community at the Clova Cinema where I work. I have always been impressed with our customers’ generosity, but this weekend I was truly overwhelmed at the way our customers and the community at large responded to a greater need. Last Tuesday, May 1, I was confronted with a huge need I could not meet on my own: the family I lived with in Sierra Leone over the past four years lost their roof due to a terrible windstorm, and were left without a home. There were also three other families close to them who were affected by this storm and their roofs were damaged even more severely. My house dad in Sierra Leone emailed me a picture of the destruction, as he had no other place to turn; here in Canada, our house insurance would easily take care of this problem, but in Sierra Leone, that luxury does not exist. In order to rebuild his roof, my house dad had to take three of his children out of school and take out a loan he could never dream of paying back – a loan for the seemingly small amount of $450, which would be over three

months of his salary. The other families were even worse off, as they had no jobs and no way to get a loan to rebuild their roofs – so I was left with a very big problem, and only a few days to come up with a solution. I could not raise enough for all four roofs on my own, so I appealed to the community – I sent out Facebook messages, emailed friends and family members, and emailed all our customers at the Clova asking them to bring in spare change. I expected to get a few hundred dollars, maybe enough to build one roof if I added some of my own money, so I was totally unprepared for the whirlwind
of love and care Cloverdale residents showed for families thousands of miles away, people they had never even met. By Sunday night, we had over $1,900, which was even more than the $1,800 target we set to rebuild the roofs. It was not just the big amount that touched my heart, but more so, people’s willingness to give combined with their genuine concern for a family they had never laid eyes on. One elderly woman walked for 20 minutes just to pass by the Clova with $10 in change, and said, “It’s not much but I hope more people will do the same.” And they did – from Thursday
night to Sunday night the Clova saw regular customers, non-regular customers, and even people who didn’t come for the movies drop off spare change, buckets full of pennies, and even $20 and $50 bills. I received dozens of emails from people wanting to help, wondering how much more we needed, and even a larger donation from a customer who couldn’t come into the theatre but went out of his way to send the money via PayPal. As I finished rolling pennies and sent the $1,900 to my family in Sierra Leone, I felt tears streaming down my face as I considered the love and compassion the people of this town felt for four families they don’t even know, and might never meet. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, do make a huge difference. This community’s generosity has given four families in Sierra Leone their homes and their lives back, proving that we still do love our neighbours... even our neighbours halfway across the world. To the caring and wonderful residents of Cloverdale, thank you from the bottom of my heart...I am now even more certain that when we work together, we can make a far-reaching difference. Krissi Bucholtz Director, The People’s Foundation of Sierra Leone
Mr. Hiebert, do the right thing To the editor; This is an open letter to MP Russ Hiebert and voters in the riding of South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale. Mr. Hiebert: After months of investigations, it is today confirmed by Elections Russ Hiebert Canada that Conservative Party staffers orchestrated a campaign to suppress voters in 200 ridings
in last May’s 2011 election. This means that the current Canadian government is illegitimate. Many brave people gave their lives to ensure our right to vote, while people all over the world continue to fight for theirs. As an embarrassed Canadian, I submit that the only honourable course of action is for Mr. Harper to call by-elections in every riding targeted by the Conservative cheaters. If not, each person who gave their life fighting for our democratic rights will have died
in vain. Mr. Hiebert, will you lead by example and publicly ask Mr. Harper to dissolve parliament? If not, your silence makes you complicit, and I suggest all Conservative Party members, refrain from singing “We Stand on Guard for Thee” this coming July 1. Your electorate awaits your response.

members met about once a month. Members used to split up meeting duties, meaning one member was part of the Cloverdale homelessness committee, for example, while another took part in the West Clayton Neighbourhood Concept planning process, reporting back to the association, and ensuring residents had a voice in guiding future development and growth. One of the first projects Krasnikoff remembers getting involved with was organizing a petition asking city hall to build a bigger swimming pool in Cloverdale. The association gathered 5,000 signatures, but Cloverdale lost out to Fleetwood, where the need was deemed greater. Since then, “there’s been quite a bit of growth in Cloverdale and Clayton, he says. The latest Census figures show overall, Surrey’s population of 468,251 has grown by 18.6 per cent, up 73,000 residents since 2006. Cloverdale’s population is just over 50,000, but Clayton – the area north of Fraser Highway – is gaining fast. East Clayton is now home to 14,034 people, more than three times the 2006 count of 4,132. Krasnikoff says Cloverdale needs a strong community association in place to compete with more active community associations in other parts of Surrey that are lobbying for similar facilities and services in their area. “Traffic and safety, noise, parks, development proposals, the swimming pool, these are probably going to be ongoing issues as we continue to grow, and grow and grow, he says. He firmly believes the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and by remaining silent and uninvolved, Cloverdalians risk missing out when it comes to the City of Surrey’s priorities. “If we are not out there and bringing those issues before council, then they’ll assume that ‘Everything’s quiet in Cloverdale and they don’t need anything’, I guess. While there have been a number of big and small victories for the Cloverdale Community Association over the years, Krasnikoff notes the pool 5,000 residents were clamouring for in the 1980s still hasn’t materialized. But for now, the priority is getting a strong Cloverdale Community Association back up and rolling. “Some people don’t know where to turn, if they have a concern, if they come to us, he continues. “We have resources so we can say, let’s put a letter together, or put an email to mayor and council and ask, ‘What are you guys going to do about it?’ I think if we’re more vocal, and we show them that there is a strong association here, it’s going to benefit Cloverdale. For more information on the Cloverdale Community Association, call 604-574-5700.

The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair runs from May 18 to 21, but everyone in Cloverdale knows the party begins a whole lot earlier than that. Whether it’s dressing up storefront windows with a Western theme weeks in advance or donning your best pair of cowboy boots and Wranglers, Cloverdale businesses and residents alike love to show their Rodeo spirit.
Cloverdale Rodeo Days features a number of pre-Rodeo events organized by the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, along with local businesses.

35 years of glory
By Jennifer Lang The Cloverdale Bed Races: just a bit of innocent fun, you say? Not for the man they call Turkey. Once again, Rob “Turkey” Kielesinski will have money – and his dignity – on the line. The sizable bet was placed last year, after Turkey’s Party Makers was crowned 2011 bed race champions, defeating Lord Tweedsmuir in the final round, after soundly trouncing Vault Restaurant in the elimination round. Vault Restaurant owner Aaron Hotell had to put on a dress – a kicky little blue number – and plant a wet one on Kielesinski’s cheek, honouring a gentleman’s bet, and setting off a good-natured rivalry. “When Aaron and I made the bet, I had no idea his legs would look so good in a dress,” Kielesinski told The Reporter in 2011. It was another sweet victory for Kielesinski’s team, now headed up by his son, Ben, and featuring staff from the novelty store. Turkey’s claim on the coveted bedpan goes back all the way to the beginning, in 1977, when Kielesinski was a member of the Cloverdale Pub Club, a rag-tag group of communityminded friends who liked to have fun – and help various good local causes. The club used to decorate downtown Cloverdale at Christmas. They also built the jailhouse for the Jail and Bail, a roving cell block equipped with a bar in the back (remembered fondly by many) where unsuspecting local office workers and shop staff were hauled, forced to wait in the clink for someone to donate money to spring

them. They couldn’t get people to leave even once bail was made. “Can you imagine doing something like that today?” Kielesinski says. The Pub Club also organized the street dance during the Rodeo. As with the jailhouse, all profits went to worthy local causes. He remembers the inaugural bed race with a blend of pride and great amusement. The team (“Turkey” Kielesinski, “Bub” Homfield, Shawn Loftus, Lorne Anuik, Chuck Wallis, “Wang” Patterson, “Kat” Stevens and “Warp” Fruno) won the coveted bedpan trophy – but the guys lost their shorts, literally; they were de-pantsed by the blast of fire hoses, courtesy of local firefighters, one of the other teams in the race. Racers and spectators got drenched in the en-
suing melee along the then-six-block route. But things really got out of hand when the crowd started pelting eggs, old tomatoes and horse manure “somewhat discriminately,” the Surrey Leader noted that year. “I remember that like yesterday, that race,” Kielesinski says wistfully. Sadly, the club lost the next two years in a row but the memories never faded. Finally, three years ago, Turkey’s Party Makers fielded a team, racing to victory, and bringing the bedpan full circle. “Now we’re trying for a three-peat,” Turkey says, his smile growing wider as he thinks of the new memories being created for today’s participants. “They’ll never forget it. I know my son will never forget it,” he says. “That’s what life’s about.” – The 35th annual Cloverdale Bed Races are Thursday, Feb. 17, starting at 6 p.m.
