Immigrant’s dream, Canadian nightmare?

Manmord Sidhu

By Jennifer Lang Surrey co-stars in Canadian Dream, a movie about a young man’s descent into organized crime that marks the feature film debut of a local filmmaker. With a plot straight out of the headlines, Canadian Dream tells the

story of Armar, an immigrant who arrives with hopes of a better life, but when he loses his job, his path takes a dark detour into B.C.’s underworld of drugs, guns and gangs. It’s a contemporary look at one facet of the immigrant experience in Surrey – from the inside. Writer and director Manmord Sidhu, a Cloverdale resident and Vancouver Film School graduate who came to Canada from India in 2003, says it’s based on a true story.

He was still in film school when he began searching for a subject for his first featurelength film. “I was looking for a reality-based script, something real,” Sidhu told the Reporter. “I got a chance to see a guy who had done all this stuff [in the film], and his partner.” Much of the action is set in Surrey, with scenes shot in Cloverdale, Whalley, North Delta and Vancouver. The story doesn’t shy away from the bru-

before – Sidhu hoped to capture a gritty realism in portraying the culture. “All the actors are new,” he said, adding auditions took 20 days. “They’re from Surrey. There’s only two or three who have never acted before.” Staying true to his cinematic vision meant financing and distributing the film himself. “I wanted to cast new people and nobody was interested. They wanted known actors. I was looking for something real. Something close to the culture.” While that meant a modest budget, Sidhu says the result is unique in Canadian and international cinema. His resume boasts both B.C. and Bollywood credits, and he founded Surrey-based White Hill Production, which specializes in crossover cinema designed to appeal to audiences in the east and the west. Canadian Dream was filmed in Punjabi with English subtitles. Sidhu hopes the film will speak to domestic and international audiences. “I think especially new immigrants will learn that when they come to a new culture, sometimes you make wrong decisions and circumstances can push you into bad things,” he says. “They’ll learn that people can have good dreams about Canada, but when they come over here, it could be different.” In the film, things quickly sour for Armar (Vic Parmar) after he loses his job, his family and winds up in jail, sending him on an in-

exorable slide into desperation. But when he meets Sunny, an operator in the drug trade, his fortunes seem to be on the rise. When the gang leader suddenly dies, Armar seizes an opportunity to quickly ascend up the ranks, pursuing his own version of the Canadian dream. “I wanted to illustrate through Armar’s life the decisions that immigrants make and the importance of getting connected with the right people,” Sidhu says. “Armar’s participation in the drug trade attests to how difficult it is to leave that type of lifestyle.” Canadian Dream also stars award-winning actress Balinder Johal, who’s appeared in a number of TV shows and films, along with Poonam Sandhu, Preet Cheema, Devinder Dillon, and Dashmesh Gill. Sidhu, 29, lives in Cloverdale with his wife. Although his father has passed away, his mother will be in the audience when the film has its B.C. premiere Sunday, April 3 at Surrey’s Hollywood 3 cinema at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. “She’s excited to see this,” says Sidhu, who is currently in Toronto for this weekend’s premiere March 26 and 27 at the Albion cinemas in Etobicoke. Edmonton and Cal-

gary are next. After that, Sidhu hopes to distribute the film in India. See our story online at www.cloverdalereporter. com to watch the trailer for Canadian Dream.

$1,000 REWARD FOR BEAR A frantic Langley man is offering a $1,000 reward for the return of his daughter’s missing teddy bear, a PNE prize named “Lucky.” Gregory Gron temporarily placed the bear on top of his car while securing his daughter inside. He forgot about it and drove away, leaving Lucky in the parking lot of a strip mall at 196 Street and Fraser Highway March 16. When he went back, Lucky was gone. His daughter, just four and a half, is devastated. “She’s got dozens of other toys but none of them can take his place,” he said. “She is absolutely inseparable from him.” Gron has circulated posters in the area hoping someone will return the beloved bear. He offered a $500 reward initially, then boosted it to $1,000 when no one came forward. “I do realize it’s a lot of money, but we’re playing with a child’s emotions here,” said Gron, adding he’s “not rich – just a regular working guy” who doesn’t want her to suffer for a “fatherly mistake”. Lucky is described as two feet tall, beige, with black eyes and a grey tummy. Contact Gron at 604-968-3079 or 604-716-6664, or by email at pacificoceanspirit@yahoo.ca.

only fitting that he’ll be there at the end. Ken Passmore, the original auctioneer of the Cloverdale Antique Mall and Auction, is returning for this weekend’s close-out auction. One of the walls still bears messages from wellwishers written to Passmore in black felt tip marker when the mall changed hands. “He was an absolute genius when it came to antiques, he knew every source of North American antiques,” recalled Bill Reid, executive director of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, who started the mall in 1999 with his wife Marion. “He’d go to the main auction places in New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia,” Reid said, adding in those days antiques from the U.K. ended up on the eastern seaboard. “If you wanted any of that vintage, you had to go there to buy it.” The second floor of the 16,000 square-foot landmark was added to accommodate the mall, and features old lumber beams. “That’s why it looks kind of rustic,” he said. “We scouted the whole Lower Mainland.” It’s now owned by Tim Garrett and a partner. The mall was home to forty-five dealers, including 10 staff members who are losing their jobs, and items from 300 consignment sellers. The preview is Friday to 9 p.m., with the auction running Saturday and Sunday starting at noon.

Is it time for an ultimatum? Halt residential growth until more schools are built in Surrey? If Surrey is serious about fixing the problem of schools too jammed to properly function, it could tear a page from the strategy book of Port Moody. That mayor and council drew a line in the sand in recent years, vowing to block any further development in their city until key transportation upgrades happen, notably the long-promised Evergreen Line extension of SkyTrain through Port Moody. That has stepped up pressure for a solution – from the premier’s office on down – because Port Moody is among the Metro Vancouver cities that is designated to take significant amounts of growth in future decades. Surrey is also feeling the impact of growth outpacing the services provided, although the issue here is overcrowded schools, a plague of portables and now a controversial new class schedule that has sparked student protests. As with Port Moody, a council-dictated moratorium on development here until more capital money is released for school construction could galvanize Victoria into action. Developers, realtors and land owners whose projects would be frozen would not relish the interruption in the flow of their profits or the prospect of a lingering cloud of uncertainty over their investments. Many of them are supporters of Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon, other Liberal MLAs in Surrey and the provincial government generally. Since government tends to listen to its friends, a development freeze would certainly

be an attention-getter. Whether enough council members have the gumption to take such action or not is questionable, and would depend heavily on the strength of the tide of public support behind them.

Here we go again To the editor; All federal political parties claim they do not want a federal election while spending millions of dollars on negative advertising. A poll on March 1, 2011 showed the federal Conservatives at 43 per cent, while the federal Liberals were at 27 per cent, putting the Conservatives in majority territory, providing they do not slip, as happened in the last election. No less than seven other polls confirm these figures. Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff is struggling to explain the word “not” as a naughty word, like former president of the U.S.A. Bill

Clinton trying to explain the word “not” in “I did not ‘not’ have sex with that woman.” Meanwhile federal NDP Leader Jack Layton is campaigning against the HST, while our B.C. NDP party limits their criticism to the clumsy way it was implemented. The HST is old news in most Canadian provinces. They can blame the opposition parties for it. Meanwhile the battle of B.C. NDP leader on April 17 is between [Adrian] Dix and [Mike] Farnworth. I believe it will be the latter.

Canadians are looking for action To the editor: Earth Hour is upon us once again, and on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. over a billion people worldwide will be switching off their lights. Last year, 50 per cent of Canadians reportedly participated in Earth Hour; strong evidence, I think, that Canadians are looking for action on climate change. For even stronger evidence, look at the new poll conducted for the World Wildlife Federation which found that 84 per cent of Canadians are “as convinced or more

convinced than last year that urgent action is necessary on climate change.” Climate change is ultimately about how we produce and use energy. So switching from non-renewable to renewable energy as quickly as possible and finding ways to conserve and use energy more efficiently are ultimately the keys to solving climate change. Something to think about for an important hour on March 26.

Colts face arch rivals in Surrey showdown From page one

Thomsen said. Bose, a long-time minor hockey coach with 21 seasons under his belt in Cloverdale, was trying to watch some of the games at the provincials. “Coach B’s had a full recovery and he’s here with us all this week,” Thomsen said. “He’s obviously taking it very easy.” Hopefully his doctors didn’t tell him to avoid excitement because there’s been thrills galore at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, where the Colts have been charging up a stable-full of victories this week, surprising even their proudest supporters and sending a wave of Hockey fever through Cloverdale. And in a dramatic cross-town showdown nobody could have pre-

dicted, it was Cloverdale versus arch enemies Surrey Thunder for the B.C. championship final. “Surrey has beaten us five times this year, and they beat us in this tournament six-three,” Thomsen said. “If we’re going to beat them one time this year, tonight’s the night to do it.” Victory within their grasp, the team was feeling giddy with excitement heading into Wednesday’s final against the Thunder, he said. Whether the Colts ended up first or second, it didn’t seem to matter. “There’s maybe five hundred, six hundred teams in the province. This is the top two teams in the province,” he said. and Clayton Elementary PAC member, also says it’s important to give back to the community. Bruce Dayton, a school counsellor and career education advisor, says between 250 and 300 Grade 12 students have an opportunity to apply for scholarships each year. He thanked Johal for the donation, and for being part of the school community. “The kids work hard, they’re volunteering often in their school and their community, they’re playing sports, they’re helping their peers – this is a very nice way to reward those kids with some help with their post secondary education,” Dayton said.

MORE THAN GRADES A graduating Clayton Heights Secondary student with business savvy will be eligible for an entrepreneurial scholarship, thanks to a Surrey real estate agent. Robbie Johal recently donated $1,000 to start a scholarship fund in his name at Clayton Heights. The Robbie Johal entrepreneurship award will be awarded to a Grade 12 student who displays salesmanship or entrepreneurship through a self-started small business or other form of employment. The eligibility criteria considers a candidate’s drive for business success without weighing academic success. Johal says business-savvy students who don’t necessarily have the grades to show for it should still be rewarded for their entrepreneurial spirit and forward-thinking ideas. “We used to plan our trips in to Cloverdale for groceries,” the late Bea Heppell told me on a Cloverdale Baptist home visit for the church Cradle Roll in 1978. “None of this back and forth wasting gas all the time,” she recalled. “We’d make a list for the farm and drive in once a week.” As my Sentra slurped up another fifty bucks worth of gas on Tuesday, Ursula Maxwell-Lewis I thought of Bea – and

smiled. Bea and her husband were much respected Cloverdale farmers three generations ago on 184 Street, south of Highway 10. Their grandson Wes, and his wife Lauren, still proudly farm that land now known as Heppell’s Potato Corp. Heaven knows what Bea would say now, but I’ve decided she was right. It’s time to take a leaf out of Bea’s book. Make lists. Drive less. My favourite list has always been a book list. Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps by Vancouver writer Irene Butler is a mouthful, but aptly describes a 12-month round-the-world trip by two retirees. See FROM TRAVEL / Page 11

Extend Your Vehicle's Life

Daniel Apprentice Tech

Between bad road conditions and long idling times, winter driving causes a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle. Spring Maintenance is the best way to help your car recover. A good rule of thumb is that a change of season equals a change of oil. Changing your car's oil and filter every three months or 5,000 kms, whichever comes first, will ensure that your car operates at peak efficiency. Changing oil regularly is the single most important thing that can be done to extend the life of your vehicle and keep it running smoothly.

From travel to gardening, sensible advice is at hand From page 10

Irene, and her husband Rick, hardly hesitated when someone offered to buy their dry cleaning business. No sooner was the deal inked when Rick presented his wife with a 12-month, $100-a-day budget and a global itinerary. “Let’s do it!” he said. And, they did. I enjoyed the journey with them, via the book… and added an around the world trip to my (already marathon) travel list. Published by Granville Island Publishing. Before You Say Yes… by Manitoba author Doreen Pendgracs brought a different kind of list to mind. How often have you been talked into volunteering on a committee for which you were either unsuited, or for which you quite simply hadn’t enough hours in the day? We’ve all done it. Doreen’s done it. Being a writer she wrote about it, aptly subtitling it “A Guide to the Pleasures and Pitfalls of Volunteer Boards”. This slim volume is practical, direct, and a sensible reference for those either considering a paid position, or a volunteer board position. Discussing what ‘red lights’ you should watch for, the importance of Directors and Officers insurance, and what an organization requires from you as well as what you require from it are clearly listed to assist your decisions. “Will it indulge your passions?”

Doreen asks. “Will this board challenge you and enable you to grow?” Published by Dundurn Press, this book may help with your list of tough volunteer decisions. Gardening lists germinate in spring. From the balcony to the back forty, how are you going to handle all those blossoms and veggies you love? Take a look at A Year on the Garden Path, by Carolyn Herriot. This 52-week organic gardening guide clearly lists what to do in the garden and when to do it. It’s a sensibly compiled book offering advice on data on everything from dealing with aphids to gifts for gardens. Mix in great recipes (I dare you to resist the Almond Biscotti!), and I’m sure you find this handy volume fun and in-

spiring. Published by Earthfuture Publications. Last year I recommended Totally Scallops, a combination of interesting scallop recipes, charming travel photography and wine tips by Ontario author Judy Eberspaecher. After being named Best Fish and Seafood Cookbook in Canada, the book was awarded Best Fish and Seafood Cookbook in English in the World and then 4th in the world overall at the Gourmand International Cookbook Awards in Madrid recently. “It was a wonderful, but surprising, experience,” says Judy. Well done! Now...if I could only find that grocery list… – Ursula Maxwell-Lewis lists travel, books, photography and great food among her passions. She can be contacted at utravel@shaw.ca

NEW SCHOOLS FUNDING ‘ELEMENTARY’

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Maddie Freedman, Danielle McNaught and Samantha Boyd were among 200 students taking part in a ‘spin-a-thon’ March 17 in honour of three teachers claimed by the disease, Lynn Ryan, Dave Smith and Mariana Mezo.

Panthers spin for a cure By Jennifer Lang What does a band of salty Ol’ Sailors, Team Lederhosen, and a hughappy superhero share in common? They were all part of the Panthers Fight Cancer Spin-a-thon at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, an event combining physical endurance with a healthy dose of teamwork and good spirits, despite the seriousness of the cause. In the past three years, students at LTS have lost three of their teachers to cancer, including Lynn Ryan, who taught at the school for 18 years. Mr. Ryan beat skin cancer three

years ago, and was expected to beat pancreatic cancer, too. It was a terrible shock when he passed away suddenly in December at the age of 62, leaving behind a wife and three adult children. Instead of feeling helpless, the school community is fighting back in hopes of finding a cure. On March 17, more than 200 students from Grades 8 to 12 joined the spin-a-thon to honour teachers Lynn Ryan, Dave Smith and Mariana Mezo. Participants collected sponsorships, pledging to pedal for at least 30 minutes in a 14-team relay – themes

and costumes encouraged – tasked with keeping the bank of stationary bikes set up in the cafeteria spinning for five hours straight. One of the organizers, teacher Sarah Nicholls, managed to ride her bike for the whole five hours – good practice for June, when she and another teacher, Amanda Okrainetz, are taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The two-day, 200-km ride from the Lower Mainland to Seattle is also a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Donations were still coming in, but it’s expected the big cats will reach the school’s goal of $5,000.

By Sheila Reynolds Carrying placards and chanting “eight new schools” and “fund our children,” about 150 Surrey students, parents, teachers, politicians and residents gathered in Holland Park earlier this month to demand more schools for the rapidly growing school district. “Surrey needs its needs met. It needs new schools and it needs them today,” said Denise Moffatt, president of the Surrey Teachers’ Association addressing the crowd. “This must happen now – not tomorrow, not next week, not in a month, not in a year.” The rally was sparked by recent walkouts by students at Lord Tweedsmuir and Earl Marriott Secondary schools, which are considering extending the timetable in the fall to relieve overcrowded conditions and fit in more students. The Surrey School District has not received provincial funding for new schools since BOAZ JOSEPH / BLACK PRESS 2005, leaving many elementary and SFU student Paul Hillsdon organized the rally. secondary facilities over capacity and using multiple portables. This fall, the district is expecting another 1,000 students. The March 13 protest was coordinated by SFU student Paul Hillsdon, 21. He’s been watching the capital funding problems in Surrey and decided public pressure needed to be applied to government. “There is nothing as elementary to our infrastructure as schools,” Hillsdon told the crowd. “There is no way that we can build the economy of tomorrow, that we can improve the quality of life in this city or that we can improve the well being on our citizens without a proper, quality education system.” Bob Holmes, co-president of the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), said with the current population growth in Surrey, some elementary schools are expected to have more students in portables than in the school itself. “This has to end now,” he said. Students from LTS also proposed the creation of youth councils in each school district to “encourage our youth to be involved in decision making that directly affect us.”
