On Christmas Day, the Canadians ate in shifts in a bombed out church as fighting waged on around them. The meal is recreated each December by Seaforth Highlanders and cadets.

Santa house inspires artist

GABRIELLE GREIG

‘Santa’s Little Workshop’ is modeled on a Cloverdale landmark.

By Jennifer Lang A cozy winter scene painted by a local artist has won second place in this year’s Surrey Arts Council’s annual Christmas card and verse competition. Gabrielle Greig’s charming portrait of a snug, red-roofed cabin in the snowy woods was inspired by a real building in Cloverdale – Santa’s Workshop at Clover Square Village, a hive of activity in the lead-up to Christmas, as children wait for their chance to meet the Jolly Old Elf. “There is just something whimsical about that little house,” she says. “I love houses, and their stories.” The multifaceted artist is also a professional face painter and balloon artist. “I have a split personality,” she confesses, explaining she’s a member of a

clown troupe. Greig has created two clown personas: The electric blue-haired face painter, Mrs. Picasso, and Balloonia the clown, who sports a neon-pink fuchsia hairdo. Both have made appearances in Cloverdale at various community events, from the annual Blueberry festival to Surrey’s Doors Open, which expanded to Cloverdale in 2014. “It’s so rewarding – that moment when you hold that mirror up to that child’s face and they just go, ‘Oh, wow!’” She started her Santa’s workshop painting last year, hoping to enter the Surrey Arts Council contest, but she put the project on the back burner; she wasn’t happy with the way the trees looked. “This year, I thought, ‘Well, why not

It’s a location she knows well. “I always liked that little house,” she says, recalling memories of setting up her colour palette and painting the faces of countless eager children. “I have sat in there many times.” Formally trained in oils in her native Austria, where Greig grew up in a town near Vienna, she’s lived in Canada for 25 years. These days, she prefers working in acrylics and mixed media. She turned to clowning more recently. It’s a job that takes her to everything See PAINTER / Page 2

Police caution against speculation in teen’s death By Tracy Holmes Police are appealing for witnesses and information in the wake of a weekend altercation in South Surrey that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy. Dario Bartoli died in Peace Arch Hospital hours after he was injured in an attack early Saturday in or near Bakerview Park. “There is much rumour and speculation as to what occurred the evening Dario was killed, and for that reason we ask individuals who have in-

formation to come to police before turning to social media,” Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Monday. Police responded to a call of a disturbance just before 3 a.m. Dec. 13, after two boys, 14 and 15 years old, fled to a home in the 15600-block of 18 Avenue, following an assault by four or five others. Police and emergency health services arrived to find Bartoli with critical injuries. Taken to

nearby Peace Arch Hospital, he died just after 10 a.m. Soon after, Twitter and Facebook were inundated with comments and tributes to Bartoli, an avid skateboarding and BMX fan who attended Earl Marriott Secondary. Pound said investigators have yet to confirm if weapons were used and the number of assailants involved. Early indications “support the theory that this was an alcohol-fuelled altercation between two groups that turned tragic,” she said.

An autopsy to confirm the cause of death is scheduled for this week. The 14-year-old who was with Bartoli reportedly suffered minor injuries. Anyone with information regarding the incident or who saw Bartoli in the hours prior to the attack is asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-5514448. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477. – Black Press

Parent charged in child’s death Gifts was looking forward to Christmas By Tracy Holmes The mother of a child found dead in a vehicle in South Surrey last week has been charged with second-degree murder. Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed the charge against Lisa Deanne Batstone, 41. The distraught defendant made a brief appearance in Surrey Provincial Court, where Judge Donald Gardner ordered a psychiatric assessment after a request from court-appointed defence counsel Kelly Johnston. Teagan Batstone, 8, was found deceased just after noon Dec. 10, in the trunk of a car in the 13900-block of 35A Avenue. Investigators believe the girl was killed elsewhere.

Decorations

Teagan was Batstone’s only child, Pound said. Teagan’s father, Ottawa resident Gabe Batstone, shared his grief on Twitter: “Life will never be the same after losing my daughter to murder… We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful Teagan. Beloved daughter, sister who deserved so much more.” Police and grief counsellors were at Rosemary Heights Elementary in South Surrey to help Teagan’s fellow students and teachers deal with the tragedy. Pound told a news conference that the car Teagan’s body was found in was initially investigated as part of a minor motor-vehicle incident. Batstone was arrested at the scene.

The mother last posted to her Facebook page on Dec. 7, when she changed her cover photo to one of her and Teagan ziplining and uploaded older photos of Teagan with Santa. In posts from October, she describes herself as an education assistant looking forward to Christmas. “Now time for proper packing, labelling then just shipping packages so Teagan and I can enjoy the upcoming festivities, celebrations, and beautiful loving Christmas time – feeling thankful,” Bastone wrote. Earlier this year, she wrote about volunteering at the Vancouver Aquarium, where she “worked my way up to trainer…” Batstone’s next court date is Dec. 18. – Black Press

sic needs. Craft supplies and activities for a three-year-old girl would mean the world to her, as would Toys R Us gift cards so she can pick out presents for her daughter. Peter, 21, grew up in the foster system, moving 31 times in just six years between the ages of 13 and 19 into new placements. Now too old for a foster placement, he’s been homeless several times but now has somewhere to live. He overcame an addiction to hard drugs, and would like to earn his diploma in community service work to help other foster children. He struggles to meet his daily needs. For Christmas he needs socks, underwear (men’s size medium), and gift cards to purchase groceries and clothing. Drop off or mail gift cards to 102-5830 176A Street, Surrey, B.C., V3S 4H5. sent their way this Christmas,” reads the appeal, shared at Facebook.com/SOSChildrensVillageBC. The SOS program is looking back on a successful year, sharing enormous milestones and achievements, such as high school graduations and sending off multiple youths to post secondary education. But it’s just as important to celebrate the small steps. “Most things in life do not come easily, especially when the odds seem to be stacked against us, which can certainly be the case for many of the youth that we work with,” says the appeal. A 2014 national report found former foster children in Canada without support and resources risk becoming homeless,

unemployed and impoverished. Sebastian, 19, grew up in and out of foster homes, struggling in his teens with a lack of consistency or family support, but he learned to be his own advocate. Despite those challenges, he’s kindhearted and hopes to one day become a youth worker to help others like himself. He’s on social assistance while attending school, trying to make ends meet. For Christmas, he’d like grocery store gift cards plus for Guildford Town Centre to buy some new clothing. Lucy, 20, is a single mom who grew up in foster care and is working to create a different life for her daughter, Emily, 3. She’d like to attend college, once she gets her financial situation more stable, but for now, she could really use some grocery gift cards to meet her daughters’ most ba-

from community festivals and schools to openings, fairs, company picnics and Christmas parties – from Cloverdale to as far away as 100 Mile House. As a painter, she’s drawn to landscapes but also creates abstracts. “Monet is one of my biggest influences,” she says. House portraits are another favourite subject. Her artist’s antennae are always buzzing with inspiration for her next creative subject.

“I can’t go anywhere without looking at things that I could possibly transform into something else,” she says. The winners of the Christmas card and verse competition are published in this month’s Spotlight on the Arts, the Surrey Arts Council’s newsletter. The entrants were on view at the Newton Cultural Centre Gallery until Dec. 15. Greig’s other work is cur-

rently on view at Sunflower Cafe in Crescent Beach, where she has a solo exhibition running until the end of the month. This weekend (Dec. 2021), she’s at Royal City Centre in New Westminster, where she’ll be face painting kids waiting to see Santa Claus. Santa’s Little Workshop is available as a Christmas card. Santa Cause needs helpers By Jennifer Lang Do you want to play Santa this Christmas in Surrey? Erica Beckstead, team leader of The Whalley Santa Cause, is reaching out for donations in advance of the Dec. 25 event. Volunteers are also invited to distribute gifts and personal care items (travel-size soaps and shampoos, along with toothbrushes and toothpaste and other small items, including candy) in person.

“Four years ago while traveling for work I started accumulating so many hotel soaps and shampoos that I had more than any one person should,” she says, explaining the bounty inspired her to come up with a plan to distribute the items as gifts to homeless people in the Whalley area on Christmas Day. That first year, she made 50 hampers full of trial-sized soaps and shampoos. Then

on Christmas Day, she and a friend, plus two volunteers recruited from Craigslist “marched the sad and lonely streets of the Whalley strip, handing them out to addicts and people lying on the street.” In 2012, her donations doubled, enabling her to make up 100 hampers. She was joined by 16 volunteers. “I was overwhelmed that this was the start of something,” she says. Last year, she made 250

hampers and was joined by 55 volunteers to hand them out. TV personality Ronnie Negus of the Real Housewives of Vancouver helped with donations. The 4th Annual Whalley Santa Claus meeting spot for volunteers is Gateway Station at 1 p.m. Dec. 25 by the taxis. “I hope to see some new faces this year,” she says. “Donations are great, too.” For more on how to help, visit facebook. com/whalleysantacause.

Following are highlights from Tom Fletcher’s year-end interview with NDP leader John Horgan. For an extended version, see the Opinion section at www.CloverdaleReporter. com. TF: The B.C. Liberal government has given every indication they’re going to proceed with the Site C dam on the Peace River. What do you think? JH: I’ve always maintained that it’s a good project, but it’s a question of when to add another $8-9-10-12 billion onto the backs of ratepayers. First of all, go to the B.C. Utilities Commission and find out if this is the power you need and if this is the time to build it. The government refuses to do that, and I think that’s just an Achilles heel in this process. TF: You voted for the liquefied natural gas income tax to provide certainty, and then you immediately said you would work to Tom Fletcher increase the LNG tax in 2017, before any major project could be started. How is that certainty? JH: I thought it was important that the investment community in this sector knew there was bipartisan support for LNG in British Columbia. But we went from a seven per cent [tax] to a 3.5 per cent because of a

softening market. If there is a decline in return to the province because of a softening market, then surely over a 25-year period – not just between now and 2017, but if the market conditions change and prices go up – I think British Columbians would want their government to make sure they were getting a fair share of that benefit. TF: Why did you vote against the LNG environmental legislation? JH: They said prior to the election that LNG would be the greenest in the world. And then when they tabled legislation they left out 70 per cent of the emissions from upstream activity. TF: Gordon Campbell’s great goal for greenhouse gases, 33 per cent reduction by 2020, can that be reached assuming a substantial LNG development? JH: I find it difficult to believe that they’re going to achieve those results. [Environment Minister] Mary Polak has a different point

The Cloverdale

of view, and our job as opposition is to hold them accountable to the numbers that they passed into law, and we’re going to do that. One of the three sectors, housing, energy and transportation, where emission profiles can be managed downward is transportation. And the government has wasted 18 months talking about a referendum on [Metro Vancouver transit.] TF: What’s your top priority for 2015? JH: I think the public is going to increasingly find affordability issues to be the challenge. We didn’t spend as much time as I had hoped to on hydro rate increases, ICBC. When the government balanced the budget, they did it by selling assets, and by increasing costs at their Crown corporations and then pulling that revenue in for budget purposes. We’re going to have to use new technologies and means of communication to better explain to people what the government’s doing to them. TF: What should happen with the agricultural land reserve? JH: I don’t think there was a groundswell of opposition to the ALR, quite the opposite in fact, and the commission has in my opinion, infinite flexibility to meet the demands of development in northern areas as well as urban centres. I’m going to make sure that [agriculture critic] Lana Popham, who as you know is fearless on this issue, is let loose on [Agriculture Minister] Norm Letnick, and we’re going to dog this issue up to the next election.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Christmas is upon us already and hopefully, your pre-holiday sales are above your expectations. It has been a productive year for your Board, during which we have implemented a number of changes, the most significant was the elimination of the Executive Director position with the hiring of Natasha Taylor as our office manager. Natasha has an excellent handle on membership issues, provides us with up-todate bookkeeping, and tracks group plan members to stay on top of annual billing. With these critical tasks being performed reliably, your Board has been able to set meaningful budgets, track spending, and start working on the ‘business’ of representing the business community in Cloverdale.

OF COMMERCE The voice of business in the community of Cloverdale

Brock Lazaruk, Vice-President Cloverdale & District Chamber of Commerce

One of the avenues that we explored this year was a merger with the Vancouver Board of Trade. We listened to all stakeholders that we could engage, including City Hall, the Surrey Board of Trade, the Cloverdale BIA, and of course our valuable members themselves. The push back was significant and during the November board meeting, all present unanimously voted to table the issue. During our annual general meeting a week ago, you elected five new members to the board. During our first board meeting, we have agreed to postpone the selection of the executive positions (president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer), until we have time to get to know each other’s strengths. Thus your new

executive will be announced at the January 13th luncheon. In year 2015, we are holding a Cloverdale Community Excellence Awards gala for our members, which will showcase to the world the best businesses and citizens in Cloverdale. We will also continue to lobby with the City for all things Cloverdale, including crime reduction, amenities improvements, business-friendly programs, and better signage on the main roadways, which will invite the thousands of vehicles that pass through Cloverdale each day to stop and shop. Please enjoy this special season of family and celebration! See you in the New Year!

CLOVERDALE CHAMBER

V ICE

The voice of business in the community of Cloverdale

Take a moment to reflect By Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Stephanie Cadieux • B.C. housing starts increased by 5.8% year-to-date to October. • As of October 2014, British Columbia exported $30.2 billion of goods worldwide, an increase of 9.1% over the same period in 2013. • United States – Goods exports were up 17.8% to $15.3 billion compared to 2013. • B.C. employment growth remains modest with a 0.8% increase year-to-date. This increase translates to about 18,600 more jobs. As 2014 draws to a close, let’s take a moment to reflect on where we are from a fiscal perspective. The following economic indicators suggest BC’s economy has experienced steady growth in 2014 in key sectors including exports, retail sales and housing. • Retail sales are a source of strength in the B.C. economy, advancing 5.7%, with notable increases at motor vehicle and parts dealers, general merchandise stores, as well as food and beverage stores.

Earlier this month the independent Economic Forecast Council reported that B.C. will see stable real GDP growth of 2.3% in 2014 and 2.7% in both 2015 and 2016 on average, unchanged from the January 2014 forecast. We are encouraged that B.C.’s economy is forecast to see

progressively stronger growth, even if it is still modest. This outlook demands that we remain committed to fiscal discipline and controlled spending to sustain our balanced budget. Keeping the budget balanced is the first step toward a stronger economy and a debt-free B.C.

Thanks to our strong fiscal management, we continue to set and meet, or exceed fiscal targets. This is reflected in B.C.’s taxpayersupported debt-to-GDP ratio – a key measure of affordability – which is now forecast to be 0.4 percentage points lower than the 18.1% stated in the February 2014 budget.

Two Pack the Police Car events were recently held at two of our local malls, Cloverdale Crossing and Hillcrest Village. Our district office was present during the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights. This was a great family event and an outstanding parade. Kudos to the BIA, Chamber, sponsors, supporters and parade participants. Earlier this month, our district office held a community consultative meeting attended by a cross-section of businesses, community groups and interested citizens. Your thoughtful input and comments were noted and appreciated. This was a valuable meeting in assisting

There was a constant theme that surfaced and will be addressed: You have voiced a request to be updated on your call for service after you have called the Surrey RCMP. This is a valid request and should be a standard part of our community/client service. Sky Kao takes to the air during the Royal City Youth Ballet Company’s annual performance of The Nutcracker on Dec. 13 at the Surrey Arts Centre.

Our first Christmas tree Surrey pioneer Mary Jane Shannon recalls the day her drab little school house was turned into a fairy land

O

ur first Christmas tree was a great surprise to us, and was due entirely to the kindness of our teacher, Mr. J. A. McLean, a tall kindly man whom we all respected and loved. Not only was he a kind and sympathetic teacher, but he was also a lively playfellow who entered into our sports with zest and good humour. Before school closed for the Christmas holidays, he held a written examination for the senior class of which both my eldest brothers and I were members. For the pupils with the highest marks he offered five dollars. Of course the chance of winning such a sum was a great incentive to study, and we all dug in, though I had little hope of the prize, not being one of the top students. Some of the parents, perhaps feeling that the teacher whose salary was small enough, thought that he was being unduly generous, and suggested that the pupils should make him a present of some sort. A writing case was decided upon which was well equipped with pens and a supply of good note paper. When the examination papers were corrected, my brother Sam and one other pupil were found to have tied in the total of the tests. The results were announced on closing day to a crowded room, as the competition had stirred a good deal of interest. After the teacher had made the announcement and awarded the divided prize money, the two winners made the presentation, which the teacher received with undoubted appreciation that bordered on emotion, so much so,

that his voice quavered and his hand shook a little as he said a few words of thanks. Then it was that he threw another surprise on the surprise. Getting to his feet again he suggested that we have a Christmas tree and concert to be held right here in our little class room.. The suggestion quitee electrified those present nt and for a brief period there was only silence. Then one of the trustees agreed that there was no reason why we should not have a tree, for the children had studied hard and deserved a treat as a Christmas gift. Other voices joined in and it was not long before the whole thing was arranged, the money collected, a good programme promised, and all in an amazingly short time. With much excitementt and elation at the prospect of the first Christmas tree ever held in the place, the gathering broke up and left for home. The next few days were busy ones, for Christmas was less than a week away. However there was hearty cooperation on the part of the entire community, the men

searching the woods for a suitable tree, a committee chosen to go to New Westminster to buy the gifts, and the women busy at making refreshments for the expected crowd. Certainly their combined efforts made a great success of the affair. success our For a huge su first Christmas tree proved to be. The little littl school house was cro crowded to the doors and to us u the pupils, the drab little b building was turned into a fairy fa land, festooned with ccedar boughs, the tall evergreen tree t filling one corner, loaded with presents for the childr children and gaily decorated with w coloured ornament ornaments and bright cand candles. We were an excited lot of children who gathered w iin front seats aand gazed at this amazing th and beautifu beautiful spectacle. No doubt we also stared at the crowd pushing into the already overfu overfull room, many of them utter strangers whom we had never seen before. It was surprising that so many people lived close enough to have heard of our little Christmas entertainment, let alone to have come to it. Presently a chairman was chosen and given a seat on the platform. He was a jolly,

witty old sea captain who carried off his duties to the enjoyment of all. As for the program, it was a medley of everything from the sacred to the comic. We had need of the Captain’s jollity and wit to carry it off. I think all the old stand-bys which had come to the fore at entertainments for years appeared again, “When You and I were Young Maggie,” “Curfew Shall Not Ring Tonight,” “I’ve Wandered in the Village Tom,” “Death of Napoleon,” and other old favourites which still thrilled us. Then came the distribution of presents which was the greatest thrill of all. Some of the grown ups also got presents which were on the comical side and afforded a great deal of merriment. Refreshments were duly passed and enjoyed by every one. Finally desks were pushed to the wall, a fiddler given a seat on the platform, and young people took to the floor and danced with vim and vigor. They were still dancing when we with our parents left the gay scene and stepped out into the darkness of night. It had begun to snow, but who cared for snow. We had just had a happy, wonderful experience and passed another milestone in our lives. – From ‘Memories’, by Surrey pioneer Mary Jane Shannon, available at the Surrey Archives. She was a student, and eventually a teacher, at Clover Valley School. She later pursued a career in nursing.

Special Traditions. I like Christmas because you get to hang your stockings and buy trees. On Christmas Eve your stocking will be full with presents. On Christmas morning you will see the presents under the tree you put on your Christmas pajamas, walk down the stairs, and open your presents and you give out cookies to people and you give out cards at Christmas parties. You feel Loving and thankful for all the presents that my mom and dad and last but not least Santa Claus. I Love Santa Claus he’s so awesome! At the end of the day you feel like everyone loves you so much. The End!! Diya Christmas is special to me because I love to decorate the Christmas tree with Mom, Dad and Kyle. I love presents under the tree. I hope Santa brings me Yoshi, Wario, Luigi, and Bowser. I will leave Santa cookies and milk. James Henry, Grade 3, AJ McLellan

What is Christmas? Christmas is spending time with others. It’s like a warm fire under the stars. It’s about caring for others. Here’s a tip: if you’re bad, you will be on the bad list. If you’re good, you will be on the nice list. Hazel

The important thing about Christmas is that you have love. When Christmas comes you decorate your house. You put up lights. You put it on your tree too. You will have an angel, a star or a bell on the top of your tree. It will snow on Christmas. You may go skating on Christmas. Abby McKague

Ava

The most important thing about Christmas is that you spend time with your family. You can open presents with your family. You can decorate your house with your family. Everyone can celebrate Christmas everywhere in the world! Kai Trattle

You could decorate your Christmas tree. You could make a gingerbread house. You could make food for Santa and his reindeer. You could make a gingerbread man. You could make presents. But the most important thing about Christmas is that we have family come over. Simone Donor

Brennen

The most important thing about Christmas is that Santa Claus comes. He gives you presents and it is fun to open them. You get to make a gingerbread house and you get to eat it. You put a wreath on the door. You get to put up a stocking and Santa comes and puts toys in it. You get icicles on your house. Max McKague

The most important thing about Christmas is that I spend time with my family. I decorate my Christmas tree. I go to my Gramma’s house for dinner. You can go on a daddy date... go get a Christmas tree and get a candy cane. You can go to church and hold a candle. Amanda Emerson

Calum

The carolers come and spread the joy. Why a wreath is put upon a door, soon the joy will spread more and more. Now everybody celebrates and everybody’s happy. Have a very merry Christmas! The most important thing about Christmas is that our family comes. Ava Skiba

Christmas is special to me because every year we read “The Night Before Christmas”. Then we put out milk and cookies for Santa and zucchini for the reindeer. Then in the morning we wait for my parents and then we go downstairs and just look at our stockings. When the rest of my family arrives we eat breakfast then we open presents. At night we eat turkey dinner at my grandparents’ house. My cousins come and so does the rest of my family. When we are done we open more presents. Julianna Chapieski, Grade 3, AJ McLellan

Christmas is special to me because I like to make reindeer food and put it on the grass for the reindeer to eat. My family also has a big party on Christmas Eve. Every year at the party we make firecrackers. One of my favourite things to do on Christmas is decorating because I am very good at it. We also get one of those Christmas count down things that you take chocolate out of until Christmas. My favourite thing to do is bake Christmas cookies and other things you bake on Christmas. I also like sledding. Christmas is my favourite holiday because it is one of the most interesting holidays to me and I get to do the most special things at Christmas time. I also like decorating gingerbread houses. That is why I like Christmas. Henna Nagra, Grade 3, AJ McLellan

Christmas is special to me because my grandparents come to my house and we have breakfast together. Me and my family decorate our Christmas tree together and we use the same decorations every year!!! We invite my friends Alex and Amilie over to our house for dinner and we always watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer with them and we laugh at the Snow Monster. Caleb Jungclaus, Grade 3, AJ McLellan

Every year we open our stockings while my mom or dad makes pancakes. Every year my Grandma comes for Christmas. Every year we go to my granny and grandpa’s for turkey dinner. Christmas is special to me because we get to go to my grandparent’s house with my whole family. Every year my dad puts on Christmas music while we open up our presents and eat breakfast. Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year. At my granny and grandpa’s house we always bring gifts for the family. We have an elf from elf on the shelf that comes around December to watch us for Santa. When we decorate the Christmas tree we all do it together. On Christmas Eve night I cannot sleep because I am so excited. Every year my sister sleeps in my bed on Christmas Eve and wakes me up at 1:00 2:00 3:00 to ask me if Santa came. I am always tired on Christmas day because of

Why is Christmas special to me? Christmas is special to me because it only comes once a year and month and it’s special to me because you get to spend time with your family and friend. Also Santa comes with presents and fills up your stocking with goodies and presents. You can go outside and play in the snow and make snow angels and snowmen. After that my dad cooks up a special Christmas breakfast for us. Last year my dad was so creative he made Angel pancakes and Snowman pancakes. After that we ripped open our presents. Last year my mom and dad got my big brother a nerf gun that was almost as tall as me! Larissa

“Christmas is spending time with others.”

Logan

Christmas is special to me because you open up presents beside the nice fire with the people you love. On Christmas Eve you eat a nice dinner with your family and friends. We always watch a Christmas movie at night time. On snowy days we build snowmen. Isabella Nowak

“I wish for the whole world to have chocolate.” Ronin Christmas is special to me because you get Christmas presents. After Christmas it’s Boxing day and new Year’s Eve. It’s like Christmas when it’s Christmas you can have snowball fights and make a snowman and I believe in Santa Claus and I can have hot chocolate and cookies on Boxing Day there’s lots of SALES SALES SALES! You can stand around the fireplace and you can decorate a Christmas tree and put on the Christmas lights and stockings and clothes and toys and I would watch on my laptop and stay up until 11:00 o’clock. JayJay

Maddy Christmas is special to me because it is my Birthday! Yay! It is odd to me but it is fun! I have my party in November this year at Walnut Grove swimming pool. Rory

Why is Christmas special to me? You get lots of toys from Santa Claus. After Christmas it’s Boxing Day. One thing I know about his day is that there are a lot of sales. Next it’s New Years on the first of January. On this day I want to stay up until 12:00 because at 12 o’clock it’s a New Year! An important part of Christmas is the Christmas tree. It has a lot of ornaments on it and a star on the top. Devan

“Christmas is when we celebrate little Baby Jesus’s birthday...” On Christmas you hang stockings. You eat a turkey dinner and get presents from Santa!!! You hang the Christmas tree. You put the star on top. You play in the snow. There’s just too much to be done on Christmas. You sometimes get presents or you give presents to someone. Everybody likes Christmas. The best part of Christmas for me is to give. Arman

Why is Christmas special to me? It is special to me because on Boxing Day we hang our stockings and we also go to our Nanna and Papa’s house. We have a turkey dinner and we play at the park across the street. We sleep over at their house for Christmas Eve. Christmas is special to be because at my Nanna and Papa’s house we play in the snow in the back yard and front yard! Hope

“Dear Santa, I would like to give you a present every Christmas.” Cheerful people all around. Santa going around. On Christmas everyone needs to be good or else you would not get any presents from Santa. Yummy candy canes and reindeers comb their manes. They would look beautiful. Lucky fish in our house because they could see Santa putting our presents on the table and seeing Santa eating treats that we give to Santa. Chantal

Surrey athletes heading to UFV Three childhood friends have signed on to play soccer together in the fall of 2015 By Kera Skocylas Three Grade 12 Surrey high school girls who grew up playing soccer together will continue their careers side-by-side at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). Harman Billen, Gurneet Dhaliwal and Jasmine Mangat have signed on to play for the UFV’s women’s soccer team starting in the fall of 2015. The girls have played together for nearly a decade on Surrey United youth teams and spent the past year on Surrey United’s under-18 team. Rob Giesbrecht, head coach of the UFV Cascades, said all three teens are talented and they have the potential to be outstanding university players. “They are competitive and will challenge for contributing roles immediately, he said. Surrey United Technical Director Jeff Clarke predicted the three players will have productive university careers. “Their leadership, dedication and commitment to their team has been exemplary, he said. Billen is a midfielder, Dhaliwal plays forward and Mangat is a defender. The girls have been awarded five-year scholarships from the school, Giesbrecht said. Billen plans on studying business at UFV and hopes to one day open her own business. She said all three of them are friends outside of playing soccer as well as on the field. “We know each other really well, she said. “We know how the others play. It’s

If all goes well Alina will drive Cenalta Wizard in the annual Powderpuff race for the women in the backstretch on Jan. 25 for the annual fundraiser for breast cancer during Harness the Hope day. Alina and Melissa met at a riding stable a couple of years ago, to this day Melissa still rides a 24-yearold Standardbred (RogueValley) which she got off the race track. Melissa now volunteers for Greener Pastures as she sits on the board and can quite often be seen selling 50/50 tickets at the track. Keep the story going, Wizzy. The three-year-old filly, Dream N Of Mona, also won on

and should have a foal in the spring. Sunday was a beautiful day for racing. Rod Therres won with what looks to be a very nice two-year-old (Buddy Weiser) out of the eight hole which doesn’t happen very often. Buddy Weiser had the eight hole last week on a very messy track and made a break but he figured it all out this week. Nice to see Dave Hudon with three winners from his stable on Sunday as he has had a tough go this meet. One of Dave’s wins came with upset minded, Lizard King, in the Open in a new lifetime mark of 1:53.3. Racing resumes on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 12:45 p.m. – Jackson Wittup is executive director of Harness Racing B.C.
