Fate handed her the best ‘change’ of her life By Jennifer Lang It’s a story Jessica Grav, 28, loves to tell. Three years ago, after a long day in class, the young single mom took her kids and best friend Kayla to the Dairy Queen in Port Coquitlam for an ice cream treat. “She did a lot of babysitting for me, and it was a treat day. As funny as it sounds, it was a big deal to go to Dairy Queen,” says Grav, who at the time was studying to be a care aid and community support worker, forcing her

When she paid for the ice cream, she handed the clerk a $20 and received $7 in change – a $5 bill and some coins. Something about the bill caught her eye. She looked closer. Lost in the flood An editor’s email in-box isn’t quite a dead letter office, but you may not want to risk it
T
he annual January office clean-up and the unavoidable excavation missing involving the desk – and computer desktop – always brings unexpected surprises. The traditional and longoverdue New Year’s re-org of the email in-box turned up some gems. It was also a chance to reflect on the sheer volume of emails flooding in over the past year. For instance, more than 1,000 messages arrived last May, nearly 900 in June, followed by a welcome drop to the mid-600s during the supposedly slow season of July and August. In September, typically a busy time of year, the number of emails climbed back up to the 850-range, about where the monthly totals hovered until December. Sorting through the electronic mire is enough to make you weep with longing for the days of office receptionists and tidy telephone messages written on small pink pads of paper. A significant portion of the
emails arriving at a newspaper are story pitches sent in by wellmeaning public relations people and communications services that involve events that fall well outside our range of interest. Some are accompanied by a follow-up long distance phone call – usually from Toronto, forcing me to patiently explain that it’s unlikely we’ll cover a promotional event an hour away in Yaletown, for instance. Naturally, a few unread, flagged or simply overlooked items got lost in the 2013 email torrent, including a letter from an online reader in California. He was responding to a letter on B.C.’s marijuana referendum debate written by the ever-reliable op-ed opinionator, Fred Perry of Surrey, which was published way back in October (“Newspaper is going to pot over referendum.”) “Dear Editor,” it began. “Fred Perry is a great demonstration of how cannabis causes irrational and illogical thinking
in those who don’t use it. The fact is cannabis will soon be legal everywhere. The other fact that Fred ignores is that there are more hippies alive right now than there were in 1969. His misconception that they are going away is ridiculous.” It was signed, Dave Lane, of Santa Cruz, CA, and was sent on Oct. 23, 2013, when one can only assume it arrived here as part of the day’s email avalanche. It made for a bitter-sweet read on Jan. 8, 2014, when it was decided it was probably too late for print, seeing as the referendum is long over. Fortunately, all was not lost: Mr. Lane was perfectly satisfied to learn that after all these months, his letter was finally being posted to the Reporter’s website. Better late than never, he reasoned. There were also promising and nearly forgotten story ideas awaiting discovery at the start of this new year, including a tantalizing tip from a West Cloverdale
Editor’s desk
resident. She told us in July about an apparent scam involving a supposed charity soliciting donations of non-perishable food items that would be purchased at a lower cost by low-income clients – a dubious proposition, when you think about it. Regrettfully, I never managed to dig up anything concrete, despite consulting journalist colleagues in neighbouring Langley for help (a Langley address had been listed on the organization’s website) and trying vainly to connect by phone and email with the supposed contact people. That said, it’s a very good idea to call the Surrey Food Bank at 604-581-5443 or visit their website, www.surreyfoodbank,org, the Better Business Bureau or the Surrey RCMP Cloverdale detachment at 604-502-6275 if you have suspicions about groups or individuals canvassing in your neighbourhood. The clean-up complete, I can’t wait to see what stories 2014 brings. The in-box is waiting.

Couple hopes to win contest From page one
Somehow, Grav managed to convince her pal it would be fun to see if some “crazy old man” would reply. So she commandeered her friend’s phone and sent a message. “Hey, I found your $5 bill,” she wrote. Five agonizing minutes later, the phone rang. “Hello?” she answered, feeling giddy and nervous. Cloverdale’s Rob McNeil was on the line. “Hey, I got your text message,” came the reply. “Do you always text people’s numbers off of $5 bills?” Laughing, Grav countered with a question of her own: “Do you always write your name and phone number on $5 bills?” It turned out McNeil’s friend had written on the bill during a fundraiser, as a kind of memo. They ended the call with laughter, and Grav handed the phone back to her friend. But it didn’t end there. McNeil was soon texting back. They exchanged phone numbers. The pair kept in touch over the phone, and finally exchanged photos about a month later. For awhile, Grav didn’t hear from McNeil. She figured he was no longer interested. “I was like, forget it! I actually deleted him off my phone.” Resigned, she eventually spent the $5 note while on a short vacation with her kids, leaving her cell phone at home to avoid roaming charges. Back at home, she was surprised when McNeil got in touch with her again, wondering why he hadn’t heard from her in awhile. It had been a misunderstanding – he’d just gotten busy at work – and he was still interested.

McNeil persuaded her to meet him for a date at the Clydesdale Inn, for karaoke night – a long bus ride for Grav. They hit it off. “We talked for about two months before we finally met,” says Grav, “but once we did I knew he would be my ‘forever’.” They have since joined homes and families – her children, 8, and 7, call him “dad” and they now have a one-year-old baby girl. If this story were a movie, this would be the point where the soundtrack would play the Wedding March. They’ve talked about marriage, but Grav says the financial burden of a wedding place their dream out of reach for now. Their daughter was born premature, weighing just over one pound. She spent six months on a ventillator at Royal Columbian Hospital while her parents anxiously put their work commitments on hold to be at her side. “So right now we do the best we can with what we have,” says Grav. That’s why they’ve entered a contest presented by MilestoneEvents.ca. Contestants who get the most “likes” for sharing their story on the Vancouver-based wedding and events planning company’s Facebook page will win $10,000 plus extras for a dream wedding. The draw is Feb. 1. Win, lose or draw, Grav says it was fate that gave her the best “change” of her life. “By some miracle that bill ended up in my hands in Port Coquitlam,” says Grav, who adds she and her beau like to joke that if they ever break up, neither one will call another telephone number written on a $5 bill – it will have to be a $100 bill at least.

Nelson Padilla has been playing guitar and singing for about eight years, and his repertoire is varied, from Johnny Cash to Chris Cornell and John Mayer. The first Happenin’ Heights music showcase was held Nov. 29, and the idea has quickly gained ground with performers and audiences alike. The concept is to take jamming to the next level of performance, says Eymundson. “You’re not born being a rock star, explains Eymundson, a musician who’s also who’s actively involved with the Wired Monk Coventry’s weekly open mic nights on Wednesdays. He encourages promising artists who show up at the open mics to sign up for the Happenin’ Heights music nights, where the focus is on providing a venue for emerging and up-and-coming talents who are looking to gain experience in front of a live audience rather than just taking part in a jam session with a bunch of other

By Jennifer Lang Fans of live music performed in a relaxed, local venue have something special to look forward to this Saturday night. Happenin’ Heights III is the third songfilled evening at Wired Monk Coventry in Clayton featuring upand-coming musicians at an all-ages, licensed setting. The Jan. 18 lineup features Joey Mullins, Matt McAllister and Nelson Padilla. The music starts at 7 p.m., and each featured artist will take the stage for 45 minutes. The performers don’t know in advance in which order they’ll play their set – they draw straws before the show, explains organizer Greg Eymundson. “I think it’s a brilliant idea for a business, you don’t have three pockets of people coming in at three different times, he says, explaining, instead, a full crowd fills the venue. Joe Mullins is an actor, unicyclist, guitarist, and singer/songwriter who is also a member of the band, River’s Divide. His favourite artists include The Beatles, CCR, the Police, Eagles, Eric Clapton and David Bowie. Matt McAllister is a

As we begin 2014 the board of the Chamber is ready to launch our aggressive plans for the year. We are looking to grow the Chamber by increasing the value to our current members and showcasing our benefits and services to our future members. We continue to offer the best price in BC for membership and are adding additional services so that we become a “must join” organization. We are here to advocate to all levels of government on your behalf and will continue to work on the Convention Center at the Fair Grounds. We believe that this is a must have facility and although the City does not share our passion for this project, we as a business community must convince them that 20 years of studies, false hope and dreams is not acceptable. The Fairgrounds are an underutilized, strategically valuable property, that needs to be developed so that Cloverdale can continue to service its growing population. Please join us in our quest to be the fastest growing Chamber in Canada in 2014.

Each municipality worked with our government and local chambers of commerce to agree on a common bylaw for the pilot program, which began Jan. 1, 2013 and was officially extended in December for another 24 months. In practical terms, the mobile licence helps save time and money for plumbers, general contractors, electricians, architects and mechanical engineers. It makes sense for trades to be able to go where the work is, without having to jump extra administrative hurdles. It also makes sense for municipalities, which are better able to ensure these types of businesses comply with their licensing requirement. And just as importantly, residents deserve choice in who they hire. For information on getting a mobile licence, see http://surrey.ca/business-economic-development/1458.aspx.

Our government has made a commitment to B.C. jobs. The Mobile Business Licence Program is one way we’re helping cut red tape for small businesses. A Mobile Business Licence helps contractors, caterers and others whose work carries them across municipal borders. Instead of having to apply for non-resident permits to work in another municipality, the mobile licence allows businesses to work seamlessly in every community that participates in the program.
