By Jennifer Lang A team of prized draft horses – the champion Express Clydesdales – are the star attraction at this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo Parade on Saturday morning. Prized for their beauty and size, the team of six black and white heavy horses are making a rare trip to Canada for the 68th Cloverdale Rodeo and 126th Country Fair. They’re one of the featured acts at all five rodeo performances, plus they’ll be on view outside the Stetson Bowl, starting with Friday’s Cloverdale Chili Cook Off, followed by the May 17 parade. Admirers can also get a closer look and have their photo taken with these gentle giants at the Rodeo fairgrounds. Horses, big and small, are an important part of the parade. The Shetland ponies from Ferndale, WA, will be back, providing a contrast with their heavy horse counterparts. “The unsung heroes are the Shriners,” points out Paul Orazietti of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, one of the parade sponsors. Between their mini bikes, go-karts, clowns and affiliated groups such as Job’s

Daughters, the Shriners are easily the largest contingent in the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade. “They’re just an incredible group.” An estimated 90 per cent of parade entrants return year after year. Like the 10,000-plus spectators that line the streets, parade participants are drawn to the sense of community. “There’s a long tradition [in Cloverdale] of doing things for the community,” he said. “It’s like Thanksgiving Day, where you give thanks and come out to the community and show pride.” Other entrants to look for this year include Ms. Vancouver, the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association, Surrey Fire Fighters, and Langley’s BitA-Bling drill team. There’s also a smattering of pipe and marching bands, two competing garbage firms, vin-

tage and classic cars, the Surrey Re-Enactors, the Laos Benevolent Association, the B.C. Renaissance Festival, and more. “It’s a mixed bag,” said Orazietti, adding more than 1,100 participants and 100 entrants are expected. The parade runs from 10 a.m. to noon. The route starts at 177B Street and Hwy 10, heading west to 176 Street, where it turns north to 58A Avenue. From there, the route jogs east to 176A Street and continues north to 60 Avenue. Then it’s east to 177B Street, and south to 58 Avenue. Cloverdale Rodeo opens Friday

he 68th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 126th Country Fair runs May 16 to 19 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, and includes the invitational rodeo, along with the annual country fair, offering family-friendly entertainment, from the midway to the West Coast Lumberjack Show. The Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-off Rib Fest and BBQ Competition is back, as is the World Freestyle Round-up, featuring the world’s best freestyle skateboarders. The Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association will present its new annual scholarship program, open to past and present student volunteers who are in their graduation year. Tickets are $12 for grounds admission (children 12 and under are free) and $20 for rodeo performances – also free for children 12 and under.

The world’s top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls compete for a total of $328,000 in cash prizes for the main rodeo events: saddle bronc, bull riding, bareback and ladies barrel racing. Local youngsters get their chance to shine when Mutton Bustin’ takes centre stage. Other attractions include the Kidz Zone, Agri Zone and Cone Zone, Classic Car Show, and Aboriginal Zone, featuring the Long House of Culture and History, and the Long House of Economic Development. Why not build refinery in Alberta? If bitumen never leaves the tar sands, it’s safer for the environment To the editor; Re: “The greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime,” May 8. I found David Black’s opinion editorial on the eventual destruction of the North Pacific most interesting and timely, considering the federal Conservative government’s commitment on making a decision on the Northern Gateway Pipeline in June of this year. The idea of building a refinery in Prince Rupert has already been proposed by B.C. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver. At the same time the Honorable MLA knows this is still a tragic consequence, and does nothing to answer the real problem of global warming and environmental destruction. Opting for the lesser of two evils, Dr. Weaver is hoping the powers that be see that the enormity of the investment involved and the public disdain for pipelining and tankering bitumen will deter them

from increasing oil sands production altogether. Personally, and with all due respect, I think the answer lies in Fort McMurray itself. Why not build the refinery right there? Then the bitumen never leaves the tar sands. This would also increase the safety of our rivers and pristine wilderness. Fort McMurray could then become the distribution and recycling return center. They could then build pipelines for distributing refined product, far safer and many times more lucrative. The money you save not building pipelines for bitumen and the cost of not having to tanker oil back and forth across the ocean could be used towards refinery construction, which would be around $7 billion dollars.

Team spirit, speed on display at the 37th annual bed challenge By Jennifer Lang It just might be one of the zaniest – yet awe-inspiring – displays of speed, agility and power ever devised – and it’s a time-honoured tradition in Cloverdale. Tonight marks the 37th annual Cloverdale Bed Races, where teams race beds on wheels in the historic town centre – all for bragging rights and a oneof-a-kind trophy. The coveted Bed Pan Trophy, for instance, is shaped like a stainless steel hospital bed pan. Turkey’s Party Makers will be back to defend their title – last year marked the fourth bed pan in a row for the seemingly unbeatable team, which enjoys a good-natured rivalry with The Vault Restaurant. The races are traditionally split into four divisions: men, women, media and hospitality. There are also prizes for best dressed – not as easy as it sounds. Previous winners have included the Surrey Museum (which have dressed as a band of pirates, complete with pirate ship, and astronauts toting a silvery rocket ship) and the City of Surrey, who last year wowed the crowd with sheer colour and team spirit. New this year will be a mixed division with men and women. Teams in that category will be competing for the all-new Centre of the Universe trophy, named in recognition of the late Bill Reid, one of Cloverdale’s – and Surrey’s – biggest boosters and former executive director of the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, which co-sponsors many community events with the Cloverdale BIA. “It’s an homage to Bill,” says Paul Orazietti of the Cloverdale BIA, who worked closely with Reid, a long-time friend and former tourism minister. Teams consist of six pushers – each running a stripped-down bed frame on wheels in heats along 176A Street between 57A and 58 Avenue. The challenge attracts everyone from sports teams, church groups and restaurant staff to civil servants and educators to see who’s fastest. Teams use one of their own beds, or use a loaner. A “next generation bed” built by Lord Tweedsmuir

Teens go outside the box in chili contest

The pair, clad in cowboy hats, smiled confidently as they stirred and added lastminute ingredients. The team was one of 20 from Surrey, Langley and Vancouver competing at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chili cook-off May 8, hosted by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Jones said their recipe for Bison Chili drew on Metis and German culinary traditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lots are going outside the box,â&#x20AC;? said John Buist, an instructor and chef at Lord Tweedsmuir, remarking on the scope of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entries. The annual event pits teams of high school students making chili from scratch in single pots on one-burner camp stoves set up on folding tables.

A birthday serenade Henry Gerber was serenaded by the sounds of his Eastern European homeland on April 27, when friends threw him a surprise birthday party at Elena’s Country Kitchen in Cloverdale. The early morning celebration, which started at about 7 a.m., featured cake, and live music. Now retired, Gerber worked as an entomologist for the B.C. Department of Agriculture for nearly 40 years. Like Gaby and Elena Nasarimba, the restaurant hosts, Gerber is originally from Romania, “A part of the world where borders change, depending on who wins or loses the war,” he told the Reporter. When his parents were born, before the First World War (1914-1918), his home was part of

Austria, he said. After the war, it became Romania, and after the Second Word War (1939-1945), the area belonged to Ukraine. Gerber, born in 1934, grew up in Germany, where he lived from 1939 to ‘51, when he moved to Canada. He lived in Chilliwack, completed high school and then attended two years of college in Alberta. He then went south to Washington State to earn his B.A and M.A. in biology from Walla Walla College. He worked for the department of agriculture from 1969 to 1997. “I now live happily in Murrayville,” he said.

Small businesses are fundamental to job creation and job growth in our province. From mom and pop restaurants to small automotive repair shops to upcycled clothing designers – small businesses are major contributors to our economies and to the character of our communities. In fact, small businesses account for 98 per cent of all businesses in British Columbia. A small business is defined as one that employs less than 50 people but most businesses employ far fewer – an estimated 82 per cent of small businesses employ less than five people. Our government recently consulted with small businesses across the province to make it easier for small business to compete for — and win — government contracts. Throughout the consultation process, small businesses highlighted the need to increase awareness of opportunities to sell to government, improve information and resources, and cut red tape while increasing small business participation. Small businesses are integral to the downtown core and spirit of Cloverdale. In advance of the up-coming Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, for example, many of our local businesses are participating in the festive spirit. In 2012, British Columbia had more small businesses per capita than any other province in Canada. I am confident the trend of successful small businesses will continue, and I’m pleased our government is creating long-term growth opportunities for small business.
