Theft won’t stop Cloverdale family farm By Colin Oswin A local family farm hit by thieves has vowed to bounce back – starting this weekend. Rondriso Farms will celebrate its grand reopening on Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., with the Tamis family unveiling their all-new store. Pam Tamis says the recent theft, with criminals breaking in and emptying freezers full of SPCAcertified beef, was tough but the family business will return stronger than ever. “It’s been hard,” she says. “It’s still hard emotionally. It’s been a struggle because it was one more hit, given everything that’s gone on this year with the weather and our crops.” The Tamises are boosting security and bringing in new products while turning the whole operation into more of an adventure than a simple trip to the store. Tamis says the new store will be decorated with an Old West general store theme. the South Pole. When BLAST came down, the parachute refused to let go and the telescope was dragged across the Antarctic wastes for 200 kilometres. The device was heavily damaged, but the crew managed to locate the data recorder, which contained the culmination of nine years of work. Fortunately, the data was recovered and the documentary crew came away from the trip with a dramatic science adventure: BLAST! The Movie. Marsden also discussed his current work on the Herschel space telescope project.

Like BLAST, Herschel will look for infrared evidence of galaxies billions of light years away, but Marsden says the new device – launched in 2009 – will provide a better picture of the early universe because it has a higher resolution telescope on board. For more information on the BLAST project, Marsden recommends checking out the trailer for the documentary. The trailer is available at www.blastthemovie. com.

from the edge of the visible universe. The project began with an initial proposal in 1999, followed by a test flight in 2005 down in the U.S. and a failed flight one year later in Sweden. Marsden said the research conducted with BLAST added a piece to the overall picture of the universe, with the data suggesting that galaxies in the distant past were much more fertile than our own Milky Way today, which sees roughly one star birth per year. “We’ve actually had about 40 papers come out of this, which is a lot,” he said. Marsden told the audience about travelling to Antarctica to launch BLAST one last time at McMurdo Station in 2008, with a documentary crew in tow to record the adventure. The launch was successful, but the landing was an exercise in tension. The balloon carried the telescope, which was the size of a small car, to a height of 41 kilometres for an 11day flight that circled

By Colin Oswin The Surrey Museum brought a frigid science adventure to Cloverdale to help cool down a recent summer day. The museum hosted UBC physicist and cosmology researcher Gaelen Marsden on July 23 as he regaled a group of 35 attendees with his tales of launching a balloon-borne telescope in Antarctica. Marsden, who hails from Langley, said he had a great time presenting his work at the museum to an enthusiastic audience. “I think it’s important for people to be exposed to science and know what scientists are trying to do,” he said. “It’s fun for me to get excited and see other people get excited.” Nearly 20 scientists from nine different universities worked alongside Marsden on the Balloon-borne LargeAperture Submillimetre Telescope (BLAST), which measured infrared radiation (essentially heat signatures)

If it’s been a while since you’ve spoken to God, or maybe since you’ve taken the time to go to a church, you might feel a little bit like this. If you’re intimidated by the thought of entering a church building again, or daunted at the idea of saying a prayer, it’s ok: these are normal feelings, ones many of us experience. It may help to remember that in the Bible, God is often described as bearing with our weaknesses, as a God who “is patient towards you” (1 Peter 3:9). Come join us on Sunday as we meet with this God! One of the things I like most about the summer months is the break in routine they represent to me. Even if you’re not a teacher or a student, you might feel this way too—July and August often mean that some of the ordinary demands of daily life lift for a while, that we have a little more time just to ourselves, that we indulge in more guilt-free relaxation. Beach days, patio barbecues, camping trips, swimming lessons, and even sunburns are just some of the things that make this time of year so great. Especially during a summer like this one, we want to make the most of every day the sun actually comes out. However, the downside to these months is that when it ends, it’s that much harder to get back to the to-do lists and schedules and commitments September always brings. Even when switching gears means getting back to things we enjoy, it can often still be difficult to return to a routine.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts was transferred to Peace Arch Hospital last week, after a horse riding accident in the B.C. interior. Watts was trail riding on horseback July 23 when her horse began to gallop. She landed hard in the saddle, suffering compression fractures in two vertebrae in her lower back.

A CT scan and MRI have shown there was no nerve damage. “She’s in stable condition, she’s progressing through her recovery process and the next few weeks will be important as part of that,” Laura Ballance, spokesperson for the city, told Black Press. At press time, there was no word about when she’ll be released from hospital.

A mystery best left unsolved I was on a mission. It was a public service kind-of-thing. Why were police hanging out on Hwy10? When it comes to commuting, I tend to be a creature of habit. After commuting from the Fraser Valley to work in South Surrey every day for many years, I have driven every possible way home, hoping – like many – to find that perfect balance between low stress, minimum traffic congestion and the quickest trip. Living in Mission and having a one-way travel time of close to one hour, I tend to drive to work through as much peaceful countryside as I can, winding my way through Matsqui, Langley and eventually the pastoral countryside of Cloverdale. Nearly every day, I drive home along Highway 10. Over the last year, I have noticed RCMP members parked on the south side of Highway 10, just east of 168 Street. Each day I pass by, there seems to be at least one angry motorist pulled over to the side of the road passing their driver’s licence and insurance papers through the window to a waiting officer.

Almost instantly, an officer wearing a bright green reflective vest jumped out from behind one of the parked SUVs and directed me to the curb. “Do you realize you just made an illegal left-hand turn?” he asked. Dumbfounded, and having missed any signage, I tried to explain that it was actually me who wanted to talk to him, to get to the bottom of this long-standing mystery. He clearly wasn’t buying my story. After a few minutes he was back at my window with a ticket for $121. Apparently, there is a sign on the traffic light – a small one – prohibiting left turns during the morning and afternoon rush hours. All this time I had wondered. Now my wallet knew the answer. – Evan Seal is an award-winning photojournalist with the Surrey Leader newspaper.

Art among the berries By Tricia Leslie Get a taste of some of Surrey’s artistic talent at this year’s eighth annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival. Located at the Surrey Museum Plaza (17710 56A Ave.), the Blueberry Art Festival features several artists displaying their talent in a juried art walk. The Arts Council of Surrey presents the art competition in conjunction with the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival as a way to promote and showcase local talent – not only artists, but crafters and performers as well, notes Arts Council of Surrey president Carol Girardi. Six artists will be showing their work in the art walk and more than 10 local crafters will display their wares in a craft fair at the same time. And, throughout the day, local entertainers and performers will perform on the plaza stage, from popular singer/songwriter Joe Given to Susan’s Paradise of Polynesian Dancers, from youth performers and African dancers to South Asian dancing. There will be activities and crafts for kids all day

Ask the Dentist How to best straighten crooked teeth‌.

By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Q: My daughter is 16 years old with very crooked teeth. She is a beautiful, outgoing young lady but self-conscious about her crooked smile. I am afraid if I don’t have her teeth straightened it could impact her self-conďŹ dence and the way others perceive her. I’ve heard there are new technologies to help straighten teeth without the need for metal braces. What exactly are my options? A: You are correct when you say a crooked smile can have a dramatic impact on her interaction with others; this is a known fact. It can also create difďŹ culty in proper brushing and ossing; can lead to tooth decay; abnormal wear on teeth/tooth mobility; tension in chewing muscles; clicking and popping in jaw joints; headaches and TMJ pain. Not to mention accumulation of plaque and calculus – which leads to gum disease and eventually bone loss and lack of tooth support... You are making the correct decision to help your daughter straighten her teeth. In recent years an alternative to metal braces called Invisalign has become popular with teenagers and adults. It helps patients of all ages feel conďŹ dent in their smiles and themselves. The Invisalign system is actually a series of clear plastic virtually invisible aligner trays, which gradually move teeth to achieve a great smile and proper bite. By using a series of clear, removable aligners that are changed about every 2 – 3 weeks, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth towards the smile you’ve always wanted. The aligners are made of a hard clear plastic and are removable, allowing easy brushing and ossing for proper hygiene. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and cleanings become easier since the aligner trays are popped out for improved access – quicker, faster, more thorough visits. This is the single biggest advantage over metal braces because often accumulation of plaque and calculus around standard brackets can lead to decalciďŹ cation of surrounding teeth and appearance of unsightly white decalciďŹ cation spots on

Clover Valley

teeth. Another distinct advantage is that removable trays make an active lifestyle easier to accommodate. When you are playing sports or an instrument there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums. IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES? In the hands of a skilled practitioner and when worn according to doctors recommendation, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment. HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEARING HIS OR HER ALIGNERS? Teen aligner trays come with built-in compliance indicators that estimate approximate time your teen spends wearing the aligners. Indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time so you can easily monitor your child’s compliance. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR ALIGNERS? Should this occur, tells the child’s Dentist right away. He or she may ask the patient to start wearing their previous set of aligners and the Dentist will order a new set of replacement aligner trays. In our ofďŹ ce Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to 6 individual replacement aligners at no charge. HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST? The cost of Invisalign is usually slightly less than conventional braces because aligners require little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor so less time is spent at the doctors ofďŹ ce. Over 1 million patients are now smiling thanks to Invisalign. If you would like to book a FREE* Invisalign consultation in our ofďŹ ce please visit:

Calling all cat lovers Kitties of all shapes and sizes set to strut their stuff in Cloverdale By Colin Oswin Cloverdale is set to go cat crazy next weekend. The Cat Fanciers of B.C. will bring their annual cat show (this year’s theme: A Black Tie Affair) to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds on Aug. 13 and 14. The Cloverdale Show Barn will play host to cat lovers and their feline companions from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, along with vendors and plenty of kitties looking for a good home. Cornelia Schofield, publicity co-ordinator for the event, says between 100 and 150 cats and kittens are expected to attend, and all sorts of breeds will be on display. “It’s a huge gathering of cats and cat lovers,” she says. Each cat will face a panel of 12 judges, with points awarded for body, ear and head shape, as well as fur W2W Presents

pattern. Competition classes include pedigree cats and kittens, altered (that’s spayed or neutered) and household cats and kittens. Attendees will be able to have their voices heard in the spectators’ choice category. Spectators will be able to learn about the different feline breeds, and breeders will be on hand for chats. “Cat people love to talk about their cats,” Schofield says. “They won’t stop it if you start them. “If anyone is thinking of getting a new cat it’s a good way to pick a proper breed.” And if the overwhelming feline cuteness pulls on your heartstrings, you won’t have to go home alone. The TLC Cat Rescue group will be on hand all weekend with lots of kitties available for adoption. For more information, check out www.cfofbc.org.

The signup fee covers lunch and dinner, as well as a pair of Callaway golf shoes for each participant. Jay Janower, sports reporter for Global TV, will emcee the event. Maletta notes that organizers decided to forego a silent auction during the tournament this year in favour of a more exciting event: a loud auction. A professional auctioneer will be on hand to oversee the bidding process, which promises to be lively. Funds raised from the golf tournament will go to local initiatives, but Rotary and the Chamber have not yet nailed down exactly which cause will receive the cash. More than $150,000 has been raised for Cloverdale causes over the history of the tournament. The golf tournament follows Maletta’s in-

Q A

What is a good age to start training in Martial Arts? Almost any age! For preschool children a positive, fun learning environment balanced with structure and discipline builds confidence, focus and concentration for success in the upcoming school years. The physical training aids development of coordination, strength, and flexibility and provides an outlet for some of that excess energy. For older children the element of competition motivates them to reach their personal best. Each student achieves successes such as learning a new move, improving a technique, breaking a board or earning a new belt rank which helps build confidence on their path toward larger goals. This confidence provides success in other areas such as school or other sports. Adults find that Martial Arts is excellent for fitness, stress relief, confidence and is lots of fun. They enjoy the social atmosphere that results from sharing the challenges and accomplishments with fellow students. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy many adults join to share the positive experience with their children often attending tournaments together so that they can cheer each other on. Q A

When our realtor brought us an offer on our home we did not receive a deposit cheque with it. Why is this?

The Real Estate Council of B. C. has a strong influence as to how offers should be written to avoid issues and lawsuits. They recommend that all contracts contain a “subject to property inspection” clause which can sometimes uncover unforeseen problems with the home. Until this clause is removed and the buyer is satisfied with the condition of the house, the contract is not binding for the buyer. If a deposit had been taken at the beginning, it would be refundable if the subjects were not removed. But since it takes time to deposit and withdraw funds, it is more practical to hold off taking a deposit until the inspection has been completed and the contract is firm and irrevocable.

Q

What fees and expenses are deductible from my investment income for tax purposes?

A

When filing your tax return you can typically deduct the following costs: • fees paid to manage your investments • interest paid on money borrowed specifically for investment purposes • accounting fees to have someone compute your investment income when completing your tax return • safety deposit box fees Please note that you cannot deduct the following costs: • Interest, fees and other costs relating to your RRSP’s, RRIF’s, RESP’s and TFSA’s. • Fees or commissions you paid when you buy or sell securities. However, these costs are used to calculate your capital gain or loss on the disposition of those securities. For assistance with filing your personal or business taxes or if you have any other tax related questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Bug Bites

Q

When I get bitten by mosquitos or fleas I develop huge swellings and I am itchy all over. What should I do?

A

Eating garlic makes your sweat "unfriendly" to bugs. We have a natural insect repellent made of Oil of Citronnella and Geranium that you can apply to your exposed parts. There is a homeopathic mixture called "HomeoFlea" that is taken internally to make your body "adapt" to insect bites. "Adapt" would mean that when you get bitten, your body does not react so violently. This can also be used to treat flea and mosquito bites after you got bitten. Mainstream insect repellents usually contain DEET which should be avoided in pregnancy and in children. Simple barrier strategy is the only way to go with young children.

“Community Pharmacy Serving Cloverdale for Over 50 Years”

Q A

Why should we come to your store? Many reasons, one is our expertise. We’ve been here for many years & we know the community, so we have a unique personal touch. We know our clients & we know their needs. That’s why they keep coming back! Another is our outstanding value for computers, parts & our fast efficient service.

Q A

How did you get into the computer business? I’ve always been interested in new technologies & helping people with their needs. I was really dissatisfied with a lot of the computer service that was around - particularly at the big box stores. I thought I could do better & as it turns out I was right.

Q A

Are you set for the new school return? Yes we are. As it happens the new school year coincides with our 10th Year Anniversary! We’re having a big draw with many prizes. Come in & drop your name in the ballot box. It’s going to be lots of fun! Our draw begins August 28th.
