Residents of some of Surrey’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods are being asked to take part in a survey being conducted by the Cloverdale Community Association. Teens take anti-bullying day message to YouTube Boy’s leadership group at Lord Tweedsmuir sets the stage for awareness, action By Jennifer Lang A group of students at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is using YouTube to spread an anti-bullying message. A boys leadership group called The Power of One stars in a short video that demonstrates the power of standing up for other students. It was shown at school for Pink Shirt Day (Feb. 26), a day aimed at bringing awareness of bullying and the importance of working towards change. It’s already been viewed more than 2,600 times on the website. It was directed, filmed, and shot by John Wu, student council co-president, who hopes it’s worth sharing with the community because he believes it sends an important message. The 5:45-minute video starts off in a classroom where a teacher begins by asking the boys to define “social responsibility”

before asking them to work in smaller groups. As the music starts to swell – a cover of Pink’s Perfect – we see one boy getting left out. The teacher shakes his head in silent disapproval. Then the camera moves out into the hallways of Lord Tweedsmuir, where everyday scenes of adolescent life play out: a boy is shoved into a locker. Another tries sitting down with a group of students hanging out only to have everyone get up and leave. A third looks crushed as he reads a flood of cruel comments after posting his picture on Facebook. It’s just another day at high school until some of the boys recognize the behavior for what it is – bullying in various insidious forms – and start to intervene in small, meaningful ways. It ends with a call to action. Wu, who also shot and di-

rected a catchy Christmas video with fellow students in December, said the boys leadership group formed last spring. It was seen as a way to get boys more involved in school and community life outside sports. Since then, the group has put on a back-to-school barbecue, and even organized a teacher appreciation day. Last Thursday, the boys planned to give tours to incoming Grade 7s. The name, The Power of One, is meant to show that members are united in a common goal: working for change in the school – and the community – despite their differences, and the power they gain by doing so. “For example, making this video!” explained Wu.

The event is also a fundraiser for local school Parent Advisory Councils. Do you think it’s noisy? You ain’t seen nothing yet To the editor; Re: “Is it too noisy in Cloverdale?” Feb. 27 Dear Shelley Haden,you haven’t seen nothing yet! People in Cloverdale have been trying for years regarding train traffic and train horns tooting all through the night. Wait till they expand the Delta Port to multiple switch tracks, doubling the amount of train traffic. But hold on, there’s more, now come the blueberry cannons. There have been protests every year, but it still continues. Then, after the blueberries are done, come the duck hunters, blasting away at all the ducks in the field, so with all the train noise, airplanes overhead dumping fuel before they land, blueberry cannons, shot gun blasts, and the dust from the racetrack, it kinda hits home in such a small community we call Cloverdale, where our voice doesn’t really matter. Hope I have answered all your questions… p.s. I forgot to add the “Jake Brake” noise on Highway 10, all day every day, 24/7, from the truck traffic. Oh! By the way, I live in a bomb shelter. Trains, planes and ponies To the editor: Re: “Is it too noisy in Cloverdale?” Trains have been a part of Cloverdale for over a century. When they use their horns longer than usual it’s because drivers are not respecting the signs. We live two blocks north of the tracks, facing south, and while there are more trains passing they have not changed the way they use them for years and are mandated by law to use them at intersections. Most aircraft flying over Cloverdale

are leaving, not arriving, so they are not dumping fuel getting ready to land. Might I suggest Flightradar24.com and you can watch where the aircraft are live and see your error? The racetrack surface is crushed limestone and has been for more than 30 years. They only race twice a week and a fresh surface has to be put down every once and a while for the safety of the horses and drivers. Out with a whisper MP Russ Hiebert’s decision not to run for office in 2015 leaves us with a few questions

vidently South Surrey-White RockCloverdale MP Russ Hiebert intends to leave the arena of local politics much the way he arrived – with a smile and a wave, and precious few explanations for voters in his riding. His recent decision not to run for a fifth term in 2015 has been handled typically. A sudden news release, followed by a firm refusal to comment further. No matter that the language in which his decision is couched – spending time with his family, returning to legal practice, pursuing corporate opportunities – is sufficiently ambiguous to provoke speculation. But Hiebert has always seemed unmoved by such matters. Virtually a stranger on the scene when he first joined the 2004 federal race for the longtime right-wing stronghold, Hiebert’s tenure as local representative has not been charac-

terized by a willingness to answer tough questions on the fly. Some clearly feel he has done a good job for the community, particularly in seeking federal dollars for local infrastructure. Whenever protesters gather at the local MP’s office, he is usually nowhere to be found. When media have clamoured for comment – such as when he was found to have the second highest MP expenses in Canada, or when opponents have taken him to task for his private member’s bill targeting unions, or when they have questioned his Conservative government’s record in helping Canada’s dis-

abled veterans – his response has been cautious, carefully prepared and, often, long after media deadlines. With due respect, Hiebert is not a politician noted for off-the-cuff eloquence or one who has seized the opportunity to defuse hostility with down-to-earth debate. If he were, he would be willing to answer a few of our many remaining questions: What grade would you give yourself as an MP? What do you say to voters who query the large pension you will receive? To what extent is your decision motivated by the rough ride your private member’s bill received from legal critics and senior politicians? And, finally, what do you intend to accomplish in the remaining 15 months of your term?

Strong support for cadets To the editor; The 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron wishes to express its sincere thanks to the residents of Cloverdale. Last weekend the Squadron held its winter Tag Days fundraiser in Langley and Cloverdale. The event was a great success and Cloverdale has again shown its continued strong support for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron is a

not-for-profit organization open to young men and women between the ages of 12 and 19. Tag Day funds are used to offset the costs of activities, which are not funded by the Department of National Defence. The Air Cadet program provides the opportunity for young people to develop valuable life skills while taking part in survival camps, gliding, drill, music, sports programs, sport competitions and

When parents inquire about a martial arts program we often hear concern that their children have difficulty sticking with a program (softball, swimming, soccer, etc.) and they are worried about committing to a program. Langley earns coveted ‘spiel curling trophy The Cloverdale Masters Curling Club played host to 24 clubs last month when the 22nd annual Senior Men’s Bonspiel got underway. A total of 24 teams from 10 clubs took part, with competitors coming from as far away as Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, Haney, and Chilliwack. Players ranged in age from 70 to 93 – the latter being Jack Logan of Tsawwassen. The final game of the Feb. 10 to 12 senior ‘spiel saw the Doug Spencer team of Langley defeating the Bruce Beveridge team from North Vancouver, earning the coveted Doc Campeau trophy. It was presented by Rick Klassen of the Cloverdale Masters Curling Club.
