Above, insults fly in real time on Facebook, and a student looks crushed as he reads nasty online comments in a scene from ‘Lord Tweedsmuir Anti-Bullying Day 2014.’

Teens take anti-bullying day message to YouTube Boy’s leadership group at Lord Tweedsmuir sets the stage for awareness, action By Jennifer Lang A group of students at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is using YouTube to spread an anti-bullying message. A boys leadership group called The Power of One stars in a short video that demonstrates the power of standing up for other students. It was shown at school for Pink Shirt Day (Feb. 26), a day aimed at bringing awareness of bullying and the importance of working towards change. It’s already been viewed more than 2,600 times on the website. It was directed, filmed, and shot by John Wu, student council co-president, who hopes it’s worth sharing with the community because he believes it sends an important message. The 5:45-minute video starts off in a classroom where a teacher begins by asking the boys to define “social responsibility”

before asking them to work in smaller groups. As the music starts to swell – a cover of Pink’s Perfect – we see one boy getting left out. The teacher shakes his head in silent disapproval. Then the camera moves out into the hallways of Lord Tweedsmuir, where everyday scenes of adolescent life play out: a boy is shoved into a locker. Another tries sitting down with a group of students hanging out only to have everyone get up and leave. A third looks crushed as he reads a flood of cruel comments after posting his picture on Facebook. It’s just another day at high school until some of the boys recognize the behavior for what it is – bullying in various insidious forms – and start to intervene in small, meaningful ways. It ends with a call to action. Wu, who also shot and di-

rected a catchy Christmas video with fellow students in December, said the boys leadership group formed last spring. It was seen as a way to get boys more involved in school and community life outside sports. Since then, the group has put on a back-to-school barbecue, and even organized a teacher appreciation day. Last Thursday, the boys planned to give tours to incoming Grade 7s. The name, The Power of One, is meant to show that members are united in a common goal: working for change in the school – and the community – despite their differences, and the power they gain by doing so. “For example, making this video!” explained Wu.

A Cloverdale family Christmas tradition continues to pay dividends for Surrey’s youngest hospital patients. For the past seven years, the Kinna family has lit up Cloverdale with an annual holiday light display, raising more than $35,000 in support of babies who require medical care. Parents Jack and Diane, along with sons

Wyatt and Nash, share the load when it comes to putting up and taking down all those the lights. The spectacle draws wellwishers from across the region to their home at 16956 60A Avenue. Do you think it’s noisy? You ain’t seen nothing yet To the editor; Re: “Is it too noisy in Cloverdale?” Feb. 27 Dear Shelley Haden, you haven’t seen nothing yet! People in Cloverdale have been trying for years regarding train traffic and train horns tooting all through the night. Wait till they expand the Delta Port to multiple switch tracks, doubling the amount of train traffic. But hold on, there’s more, now come the blueberry cannons. There have been protests every year, but it still continues. Then, after the blueberries are done, come the duck hunters, blasting away at all the ducks in the field, so with all the train noise, airplanes overhead dumping fuel before they land, blueberry cannons, shot gun blasts, and the dust from the racetrack, it kinda hits home in such a small community we call Cloverdale, where our voice doesn’t really matter. Hope I have answered all your questions… p.s. I forgot to add the “Jake Brake” noise on Highway 10, all day every day, 24/7, from the truck traffic. Oh! By the way, I live in a bomb shelter. Trains, planes and ponies To the editor: Re: “Is it too noisy in Cloverdale?” Trains have been a part of Cloverdale for over a century. When they use their horns longer than usual it’s because drivers are not respecting the signs. We live two blocks north of the tracks, facing south, and while there are more trains passing they have not changed the way they use them for years and are mandated by law to use them at intersections. Most aircraft flying over Cloverdale

are leaving, not arriving, so they are not dumping fuel getting ready to land. Might I suggest Flightradar24.com and you can watch where the aircraft are live and see your error? The racetrack surface is crushed limestone and has been for more than 30 years. They only race twice a week and a fresh surface has to be put down every once and a while for the safety of the horses and drivers. Also on windy days they have a water truck make numerous trips around the track to keep the dust down. ‘Ecurb Wobniar’ via CloverdaleReporter.com

Out with a whisper MP Russ Hiebert’s decision not to run for office in 2015 leaves us with a few questions

E

vidently South Surrey-White RockCloverdale MP Russ Hiebert intends to leave the arena of local politics much the way he arrived – with a smile and a wave, and precious few explanations for voters in his riding. His recent decision not to run for a fifth term in 2015 has been handled typically. A sudden news release, followed by a firm refusal to comment further. No matter that the language in which his decision is couched – spending time with his family, returning to legal practice, pursuing corporate opportunities – is sufficiently ambiguous to provoke speculation. But Hiebert has always seemed unmoved by such matters. Virtually a stranger on the scene when he first joined the 2004 federal race for the longtime right-wing stronghold, Hiebert’s tenure as local representative has not been charac-

terized by a willingness to answer tough questions on the fly. Some clearly feel he has done a good job for the community, particularly in seeking federal dollars for local infrastructure. But others have been less than impressed by an MP who, for the average voter, has been hard to locate, let alone engage on thorny issues, outside of carefully stage-managed events, such as Canada Day picnics, seniors forums and ‘good news’ photo-ops. Whenever protesters gather at the local MP’s office, he is usually nowhere to be found. When media have clamoured for comment – such as when he was found to have the second highest MP expenses in Canada, or when opponents have taken him to task for his private member’s bill targeting unions, or when they have questioned his Conservative government’s record in helping Canada’s dis-

abled veterans – his response has been cautious, carefully prepared and, often, long after media deadlines. With due respect, Hiebert is not a politician noted for off-the-cuff eloquence or one who has seized the opportunity to defuse hostility with down-to-earth debate. If he were, he would be willing to answer a few of our many remaining questions: What grade would you give yourself as an MP? What do you say to voters who query the large pension you will receive? To what extent is your decision motivated by the rough ride your private member’s bill received from legal critics and senior politicians? And, finally, what do you intend to accomplish in the remaining 15 months of your term?

Strong support for cadets To the editor; The 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron wishes to express its sincere thanks to the residents of Cloverdale. Last weekend the Squadron held its winter Tag Days fundraiser in Langley and Cloverdale. The event was a great success and Cloverdale has again shown its continued strong support for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron is a

not-for-profit organization open to young men and women between the ages of 12 and 19. Tag Day funds are used to offset the costs of activities, which are not funded by the Department of National Defence. The Air Cadet program provides the opportunity for young people to develop valuable life skills while taking part in survival camps, gliding, drill, music, sports programs, sport competitions and

social activities. We would also like to bring to the attention of readers that the squadron is celebrating its 50th year of service this year. Notes from the Backstretch

Contributed Friday, Feb. 28 at Fraser Downs was the Rick White show. White won three races with horses that he trains and drives. The most impressive came from a threeyear-old filly named T Squared. This daughter by Allamerican Cobalt out of the very good race mare, Samantha Square (23 lifetime wins, over $460,000 earned and a race mark of 1.51.3), was making her 2014 debut. T Squared won her one and only 2013 start as well but then had health issues and was not able to strut her stuff.  What is the deal with Sunday and snow? Once again on March 2 the horses at Fraser Downs were in the snow. Driver Jim Marino came away with four wins in the slop which included Cantbeatacheetah for owner Shelley Eng in the Open race. If your horse’s name started with the letter “Eâ€?, it meant you won an elimination race for the Clarence Gagnon Memorial stake race. Excessive and Eden Shooter will square off in the $20,000 final at Fraser Downs this Sunday with post time at 12:45. Racing resumes on Friday at 7 p.m. with the $20,000 Muriel Fornwald stake race as the feature.

Q: At

what age can we start to train?

A: The earlier you start, the better. In this day and age there are so many life styles that cause problems for us, starting at a very early age. Training comes in many forms and should be age and sport appropriate. Todlers should be learning balance and body awareness. Then you get into the 6-12 range where you need to be adding in light weights or bands to assist in sports or to prevent injuries of long term sports. preventative training is key. At 13 teens need something to help them through fast growth and posture issues from school or lifestyle and building confidence. Q: Why should I bring my dog back for more obedience classes? A: Our canine companions do not continue getting better at obedience and manner because we do a Puppy Kindergarten class and perhaps a Beginner Adult dog training program. Our dogs get better as we continue to educate and practise with them. There is sooo much more after puppy and adult training levels! I witness many of my pet parents come into a puppy or adult beginner course, perhaps never having experienced a structured training environment, see how FUN and easy it is, and then continue on through beginner level 2, intermediate, advanced levels 1 throught 4 and so on. Sometimes they even carry on to competition obedience, rally o, agility, CGN, etc.

using computers at work and home, eye strain has become a major complaint. Studies show that eye strain and other bothersome visual symptoms occur in 50 to 90 percent of computer users. These problems can range from physical fatigue, decreased productivity and increased numbers of work errors, to minor annoyances like eye twitching and red eyes. Having a routine comprehensive eye exam is the most important thing you can do to prevent or treat computer vision problems. Measure how far your eyes are from your screen when you sit at your computer, and bring this measurement to your exam so your eye doctor can test your eyes at that specific working distance. Consider computer eyewear. For the greatest comfort at your computer, you might benefit from modifying your eyeglasses prescription to create customized computer glasses. This is especially true if you normally wear contact lenses, which may become dry and uncomfortable during sustained computer work. Computer glasses also are a good choice if you wear bifocals or progressive lenses, because these lenses generally are not optimal for the distance to your computer screen.

do I need x-rays?

Dr. Parveen Atwal

X-ray evaluation of the dental and periodontal (gum or bone) tissues is a critical tool needed for your examination. Dentists use x-rays for many reasons: to find hidden dental structures, malignant or benign masses, bone loss, and cavities. It is possible for both tooth decay and periodontal disease to be missed during a visual exam alone. Most people will have 4 small x-rays taken once a year during one of their cleaning visits. These are used to detect hidden decay and changes in bone density caused by gum disease. Sometimes a smaller, individual x-ray is needed to detect abnormalities of the root structure and surrounding bone of a tooth. Evening & weekend appointments available

should I own a foam roller?

Christelle Stoesz

FOAM ROLLERS are ideal for treating, stretching and releasing muscles and joints as well as preventing injuries and helping to speed up the recovery of existing injuries. The benefits of using a foam roller include decreased pain and soreness, increased blood flow, breaking up of scar tissue and adhesions, increased range of motion and increased core stabilization. The foam roller comes in different lengths and types, which can vary at an affordable price. Some areas that it can help with: Mid-back • Sacroiliac joint • Thighs • Calves •Hips • Gluts • Pecs • Abdominals Don’t forget to ask a health care professional for proper demonstration/usage.

A: One of the major concerns that patients have is the amount of radiation exposure they receive from x-rays. Digital x-rays, which replace the traditional film with an electronic sensor, require much less radiation and is very safe.

Q I’m thinking about buying a computer & can’t decide on a laptop, desktop, tower or tablet! A If you’re going mobile rule out the desktop or tower. However if you have the space your best bet is the tower. (Providing you start with a good CPU and Mainboard) Towers are easily upgraded for a reasonable price such as video/sound cards or ram (makes it faster), add fans (super cool) & hard drives. Literally anything you want to add including new ports or even the case will work. The desktop is smaller but parts are expensive and hard to obtain. Tablets are highly portable but the biggest complaint is how small they are. Should you want a tower, desktop, laptop or tablet give us a call & we’ll give you a great quote! Q: Why

Q: Should Sellers Repair Defects Before Selling? A - After years of living in a home, it’s easy to fall into a habit of overlooking home maintenance chores. If there’s no urgency, many homeowners procrastinate. Often problems don’t get fixed until a major disaster occurs. Deferred home maintenance can become a problem when you decide to sell. Most buyers want to buy homes they can move right into without having to make a lot of repairs. A home that is in move-in condition is one that appeals to a broad audience of prospective homebuyers. First-time homebuyers, and buyers with busy lifestyles, often won’t consider buying a home that needs a lot of work. They haven’t the time or experience to deal with the problems. Q: Help! My dad is being discharged from the hospital and I can’t get time off work to help. How can I set him up to recover on his own? Full electric hospital beds, whether a short term rental during recovery or a long term solution to improved mobility help to provide independence & comfort. These beds help raise your head and upper body to sitting position so it is easy and painless to get up and out of bed. The height of the bed can also be adjusted so it makes it easier to get out of the bed and transfer to a wheelchair, walker or steady yourself before standing. With the electric hand pendant, you can infinitely adjust the position of your head and knees to improve comfort while you are sleeping or just resting in bed. Other items to help with home recovery are walkers, overbed tables, transfer benches, long handled hand held showers, reachers, stocking aids, wheelchairs or scooters. SelfCare has all these products available under flexible rental terms so you only have the equipment you need for the time you need it. A: in a word...no. Society has changed over the years. Safety concerns make it impossible for children to roam freely outdoors like they used to. And the onset of technology has made everyone more sedentary . In Childcare, children often don’t have the time or transportation to get to sports activities. Children need a minimum of 1 hour of exercise per day. This can mean organized sports or just free play. At KidZrock we develop muscles minds and imaginations. We believe in creative free play and also introducing and teaching our students sports ( running, soccer, skating, hockey, etc)and activities that can carry them through their entire lives, leaving them both mentally and physically fit!

As the name implies, Sea-licious® is from the sea and is absolutely delicious. It comes in tangerine-lime, colada, and raspberry flavours. There are MANY benefits to supplementing with a good quality Omega oil. Some of the benefits of omega-3 in dogs include better joint health, kidney function support, skin and coat improvement, epilepsy support, heart health and mood and behavior balance. Salmon oil may not be the answer…there are oils that are made from less toxic sources like anchovy and sardines. These are fast moving fish that actually absorb less toxins from the ocean. If your pet has a fish allergy, there are other options such as Flax or Coconut oil which have their own benefits as well. Rotating through the different oil options is a great way to balance out what your pet is getting and to make sure coat, joint, skin, brain, heart and organ function are all being supported! Come in and see us for a wide range of supplementation options.

When parents inquire about a martial arts program we often hear concern that their children have difficulty sticking with a program (softball, swimming, soccer, etc.) and they are worried about committing to a program. As with most things, it is how we Karen Bennett are taught to deal with the challenges and obstacles that we face in life that will determine what we do the next time we encounter difficulty. If a child is allowed to quit when they get bored or things get difficult then in the future when obstacles arise it will be much easier to quit again. Essentially if we allow them to quit, we are teaching them to be quitters. In Martial Arts the journey to Black Belt is hard (as in any goal worth achieving). Every class presents challenges that the student must overcome with the help of their instructors and peers. Just as with quitting, each time an obstacle is overcome the student learns that through persistence it is not ‘am I going to continue’ but ‘what do I need to do to meet this challenge’. The lessons learned by conquering obstacles might be what it takes later in life to reach significant goals such as graduating from high school or university or maybe getting that promotion at work. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy the majority of students that enroll in their first class as a white belt, eventually reach the goal of Black Belt (an accomplishment that takes years to complete).

accelerating your freedom to a mortgage free life. Change your Payment Frequency. Most mortgages now come with the option to pay your mortgage at a frequency that matches your cash flow. Consider paying bi-weekly or weekly rather than monthly as you can shave approx. 5 years off your amortization and be mortgage free sooner. Investigate a refinance to consolidate other debt. Most unsecured debt is priced at a higher rate than your mortgage. For many people it makes sense to use available home equity to pay out this debt, as it typically reduces interest costs significantly.

accepted on our house. As a home owner what would you suggest I do now? Edith Katronis

A: Two important things, yet so simple, is to be honest and cooperative. Don’t try to embelish your home if you happen to talk to the buyer. The buyer can see for themselves what they are buying but be forthright with any problems you’ve had. They are usually not big enough to kill a sale. Allow for inspections and second viewings from parents etc. Most importantly, be nice to the buyer. The buyer is very nervous at this stage. Should they be buying your home or should they wait for another one? Can they afford it? These are all things they worry about and it would not help if, as a seller, you are scowling at them. You can let them know how much you’ve loved living there and wish them well.

noting the church is open to allowing community access to the Clova as a venue. “They seem to be the perfect fit.” In addition to preserving heritage aspects of the building, the city is asking the potential buyers to provide for a specific number of parking spaces, he said. One major change would involve the building’s colour, which would revert from burgundy, black and gold to its original, subdued hues. The current colour scheme is a face lift done in the late 1990s during the Smallville era, when the cinema was used as a location for the TV production, playing the role of The Talon in Superman’s hometown. A deadline on the deal was expected to reached over the weekend. Contacted Monday, Burghardt was hopeful that

a change in ownership would spell the end of his five-year wait in limbo as tenant. Burghardt was expecting to meet with representatives from the church on Wednesday, after the Reporter’s press time. “My intention is to go ahead,” he said. “This all hinges on me getting a lease.” The Clova has been paying rent on a month-bymonth basis for the past five years, and the building has been on the market for four of those. “I’ve been operating on hope,” he said. “What I need is a lease – from somebody.” Regardless of the outcome of yesterday’s meeting, this Friday, the Clova presents Mr. Peabody and Sherman. “My strategy has been to ‘open’ movies because they give you film,” he said, explaining it’s increasingly difficult to track down celluloid versions of first-run movies. “It’s been nearly impossible to do double bills.”
