Big dreams, head start

Danica Danielsen hopes for a career in Nashville By Lorene Keitch Danica Danielsen is a Cloverdale singer with big dreams and a big head start on her career ambitions. At only 17 years old, Danielsen has already been connecting with agency representatives in New York and writing songs in Nashville. Add that to her family connections in the industry – both parents work in a music studio and know a lot of people in the music business - and Danielsen is on her way to making a career in the music industry. But it is about more than just a career for Danielsen. It is something she loves to do. She finds singing to be a freeing experience as there is no right or wrong way to do it. Like the dancing she did for years, singing allows her to express herself and share her passion with others. “As long as I can remember, I’ve been singing,” Danielsen reflects. When she was about 13 years old, she really started to take things seriously and began formal voice training and writing her own songs. As she builds up a repertoire of songs, Danielsen is singing less of other people’s work and more of her own.

The 17-year-old is among the local talent performing Saturday at the Blueberry Festival.

The writing is a “big thing” for Danielsen as she enjoys performing her own work. She writes about anything that catches her eye and finds most of her writing is not as much introspective as looking out at the world. One of her songs in particular has already created a buzz in the music industry. It is a love song written about Edward and Bella – the two main characters from the famed Twilight book and movie series. Titled “Don’t Go Away”, the song caught See TWILIGHT LOVE SONG / Page 2

to share her love of horses with the world. She also enjoys painting portraits of cows as she enjoys their expressive faces and strong bone structure. A venue like the Blueberry Festival is a perfect location to share her passion as hundreds of people take a walk through the art displays and craft fair in a relatively short amount of time. Miskell finds she is inspired by the challenge of turning a quick snapshot into a work of art. Once she starts painting, she has a good idea of how she wants the piece to end up, but it is still a surprise to her when a finished piece sits before her. While she had painted as a child, Miskell set aside her brushes while she focused on work and life. But now that she is retired, Miskell is back at it again, enjoying more than ever the process of creating something beautiful out of a simple blank canvas. Though she has never gone to a formal art school for training, Miskell does research online to find out different tips and techniques. She paints most often with acrylics as they dry fast, don’t smell and she likes the depth of colours found in this paint selection. As models for her work, Miskell scours local farms and fairs to seek out horses and cows with character. “Living in Cloverdale offers me ample opportunity for image collection as I live

close to the rodeo grounds and Fraser Downs racetrack,” she says. She takes a few photos and then decides which portion of a picture she might want to focus on for a new painting. Some are scenes of a full animal plus their surroundings, such as near cowboys or in a stable. Others are tight close-up shots of the face, or even just a portion of the face. “I know almost instantly what I will

paint when I begin,” Miskell explains. Her focus recently has been on completing a series of rodeo paintings, using the Cloverdale rodeo as her inspiration. While she’s not in it for the money, Miskell is actually starting to make an income off of her work, having sent pieces to American shows where there is definitely a large market of people interested in cowboy and farm animal-themed art pieces. Aside from the actual enjoyment of painting, Miskell likes that she meets so many people through displaying her work, especially other artists painting similar styes to her. Believe it or not, there is actually a group called the American Society of Bovine Artists, of which Miskell is now a member. One of her favourite paintings is called “Wired”, a close-up shot of a local cow looking through a fence. This and a few other of Miskell’s paintings will be on display at the juried art walk during the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival. Make sure to walk down the avenue of artists on display at this year’s festival. Coordinated by the Arts Council of Surrey, the juried art walk includes a wide variety of artists and a craft fair as well. The art walk and craft fair runs Saturday, Aug. 14 from 10-5 p.m. at the Surrey Museum Plaza. An awards ceremony for the art competition starts at 4 p.m.

the attention of Capital and Sony Records in New York. Danica flew to New York City where she met some people in the music industry. They sent her to Nashville, where she wrote and recorded a few songs with country singer Jamie O’Neal. With the hard work Danielsen is putting in to make her career goals happen, she is optimistic she can go far. “It’s definitely a lot of work,” Danielsen says. “There’s a lot of sacrifice, but it’s worth it.” She describes her style as pop/country, and she hopes to be like Carrie Underwood

“There’s a lot of sacrifice...” - Danica Danielsen some day. She feels blessed to have been raised in Cloverdale, and says it is important to be a part of the community you live in. “You can only expect the best from your community when you are a part of your community,” she writes on her MySpace page. She performs at concerts, festivals and events through-

out the Lower Mainland. This summer, she is averaging a performance every weekend and she rehearses every single day. Cloverdale residents might have heard Danielsen perform at the Chili Cook-off during Rodeo Week. It was her first big gig performing with a seven-piece band. Locals can see Danielsen perform again as she hits the stage during the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. on the entertainment stage at Clover Square Village with a host of other young performers. Live music continues to 4 p.m.

in brief

By Lorene Keitch A new event to the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival this year is sure to attract crowds. Featuring heavy machinery in competition, the antique tractor pull puts the pedal to the metal as farmers find out who’s got the toughest tractor out there. The antique tractor pull takes place at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15. Farmers will be bringing their antique tractors to compete in a weight-pulling contest. Each tractor is hooked up to a sled full of weights which goes higher in the air as the tractor moves further forward. “It’s entertaining to watch,” says event coordinator Vern Keller, an avid antique tractor-pull competitor himself. There are tractor pull events held throughout the Fraser Valley every year. Just a couple weeks ago Keller competed in a tractor pull in Aldergrove and again in Chilliwack Aug. 7-8.

berry festival, it is sure to draw a crowd. Keller figures there will be somewhere between 40 and 50 tractors competing, all of them older than 1960 and divided into nine weight categories. Some go back to the 1930s – many are in the 1940s- ‘50s range. Keller is bringing his three John Deere tractors to the competition, all antiques and in different weight categories. Bringing this event to the blueberry festival adds another element to the already busy weekend. “It’s going to give people more to do,” Keller comments. The tractor pull is free to come and watch. If that’s not enough to entice you, Keller mentions there will also be a beer garden open at the track. The event runs from 1-4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, so there is lots of time to head on up to the race track and check out the antique tractor pull.

If you’re in the mood for a peaceful drive to Aldergrove this weekend, there’s still time to check out the stunning Jade Buddha, a 2.7-metre high carved from northern B.C. jade. The four-tonne statue, valued at $5 million, is spending nine days at the Hoa Ngheim Monastery – its only B.C. stop on a five-year-long world tour. While it’s in Aldergrove, as many as 200,000 people are expected to view the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, carved in Thailand from an 18-tonne boulder of gemstone-quality jade – a rock called Polar Pride discovered by Surrey’s Jade West Company.

The statue is on display at the new monastery, located in a former United Church at 2623 272 Street until Sunday, Aug. 15.

In this file photo from December 2007, Marge Humchitt and Edna Edgar, supporters of the families of convicted killer Robert Pickton’s victims, comfort each other at an angel tree outside B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster moments after the verdict. Pickton was convicted of six, seconddegree murder charges in the Missing Women case. The trial lasted nearly a year.

Pickton horror: don’t look away

You should pay attention to the Pickton murders – so we can make sure nothing like them ever happens again What’s it like to sit a few inches away from a serial killer? In 2007, I covered the Robert “Willie” Pickton trial for Black Press. The 16 seats reserved for media were confined to the first and second rows of courtroom 102 at the New Westminster Law Courts. Some days, I had a front row seat to what some had darkly dubbed the Trial of the Century. A wall of glass separates the public gallery from the court, but the defendant sits, backed turned, in a box directly ahead of that first row. It was close enough to discern the colour of Pickton’s eyes (green) and notice he never seemed to fidget or so much as scratch an itch during the 11 long months of the trial, never mind make eye contact with anyone in the public gallery. Slight, balding, jail-house soft, he had a non-descript face and greasy, stringy hair that always looked soaking wet. He looked more like a goblin than Canada’s worst accused serial killer. Still, I preferred the second row. What’s it like to sit a few inches away from a serial killer? Truth is, it’s a lot more impressive to watch the father of one of his victims summon the courage to face down his daughter’s killer – moments after telling the judge that on hot dog day, his granddaughter was asked what it’s like to eat her mother. I’d rather tell you about the sisters who closed their eyes and clasped each others’ hands in the anxious seconds before the judge delivered the maximum penalty – their joyous cries of relief ringing through the room.

I contemplate the dedication of another relative – though his loved one wasn’t one of the six counts being dealt with – who observed every hour of the marathon trial, faithfully showing up each day for nearly a year. Now that the remaining 20 charges against Pickton have been stayed, I wonder if he’ll ever get the answers he’s been waiting to hear? Of course, not all of the victims came from loving homes – quite the opposite. Abusive childhoods, poverty, fierce drug addictions, and even mental illness run as common threads knitting the backgrounds of Vancouver’s missing women together, and it’s what put them in harm’s way. “For them to have been murdered in the circumstances of this case makes their already tragic lives more tragic,” the trial’s lead prosecutor, Michael Petrie, said. Now that the public can finally hear what the jury never knew when deciding Pickton’s fate – much of it shocking – I’m hearing the same sorts of comments I heard back when I was covering the trial. “Trying to avoid Pickton revelations,” karen_cook Tweeted last Friday. “Already horrifying and tragic enough and on my list of things I don’t need to know.” “I skipped the trial, and I certainly skipped the tapes. I can hardly bear to look at the picture,” a commenter wrote on a news site. The evidence presented at the trial was disturbing, horrific. Investigators found a gun with a sex-toy with DNA from one of Pickton’s victims fitted over top, night vision gog-

gles, handcuffs, bloodstains, heads in buckets – details that sent the young daughter of a victim sobbing from the courtroom. There were more terrible revelations to follow. The Pickton farm was essentially a death camp for drug addicts in the heart of suburbia, surrounded by homes whose property values never faltered. The compulsion to look away from Pickton’s crimes is understandable – even my friends didn’t ask me about the trial. But to say it’s simply too gruesome is to miss the point, which is that terrible things happened to dozens of women – poor, drug-addicted women from abusive childhoods and circumstances. Women society had unabashedly written off. To look away is to remain ignorant of the fact the women were mothers, daughters, and sisters who were, and still are, very much missed. “All we have are bone fragments,” lamented one relative speaking at Pickton’s sentencing. Some of the families don’t even have that. Thanks to the humanity shown by the loved ones of the victims, covering the trial wasn’t an experience devoid of hope. During this final chapter, we need to examine what took place, so we, as a community, can ensure it doesn’t happen again. Coming to terms with the horrific evidence from Pickton’s trial is an important step in the right direction. As a society, it’s the least that we can do.

takes place in 36 communities across B.C. on Sept. 12. As the guardian of three wonderful dogs whose lives were saved by the BC SPCA, I want to thank each and every person who participates in this annual fundraising event. I cannot imagine my life without my shy, affectionate and slightly neurotic black Labrador retriever Bob, who was rescued through a cruelty investigation after his owner beat him repeatedly as a puppy. Or Sam, my maltese-shih tzu cross, who was found wandering alone on the streets of Penticton. Sam quickly made the transition from timid, homeless stray to swaggering king of the household and has developed an obsession with watching his favourite shows on high-def every night. He barks loudly to demand we turn on the television and barks even more loudly if we don’t flip immediately to his channel of choice (his top picks are CSI Miami, The Littlest Hobo and, strangely enough, any home decorating show). Calleigh, my energetic toy poodle who

Maggie and Blaze know a little something about second chances. After fending for themselves on the streets, the frisky cats were picked up by a Good Samaritan and brought to the BC SPCA’s Surrey Branch, where they were given food, shelter and the loving care they so desperately needed. Sadly, no one came forward to claim Maggie and Blaze, so they were placed up for adoption. But it didn’t take long before they attracted the attention of new families, who opened their hearts and their homes to give them a second chance. Maggie and Blaze are just two of nearly 37,000 animals the non-profit BC SPCA provides a variety of services to every year, and we couldn’t do it without your help. This month, animal lovers across B.C. are holding garage sales, car washes, bake sales and are soliciting pledges from their friends and family in support of the Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk, which

was rescued from a horrific existence in a Surrey puppy mill, makes me laugh every single day with her peculiar approach to life (for example, she can’t sleep at night unless she has filled her dog bed with piles of shoes stolen from various locations around the home). Without the caring people who support the BC SPCA, Bob, Sam and Calleigh would have been left to suffer at the hands of violent and neglectful owners. I will be forever grateful to the people who gave them a second chance and who gave me the opportunity to share my life with these unique, loving companions. Please join us on Sept. 12 for the Scotiabank & BC Paws for a Cause Walk. Bring your four-legged friends along and help save the lives of abused and homeless animals in your community. River officially rocked Thousands hear the music, and the message, in Cloverdale

By Jennifer Lang Thousands of fans attended the Rock the River Christian music concert at the Cloverdale Amphitheatre last Saturday. Organizers said nearly 8,000 people attended the concert, which featured live music from six Christian rap, rock and pop bands as well as a gospel message from Franklin Graham. Graham, son of TV evangelist Billy Graham, is spending a month touring Western Canada as part of the Rock the River West tour. The Cloverdale event on Aug. 7 was the first of three such evangelical events planned by the Billy Graham Evangelical Association in Canada. The tours are aimed at reaching young people. The next stops are Calgary and Edmonton. The show wasn’t a money-making venture at only $10 per ticket, but Dwayne Buhler, Rock the River communications volunteer, said the intention was to reach out to the community. The lineup included Skillet, Starfield, Thousand Foot Krutch, Tedashii, Downhere and The Almost. – With files from Black Press

CRIME DROPS It’s summer time and the living is easy, as the song penned by George Gershwin goes. Perhaps that explains why there’s been very few break and enters in downtown Cloverdale. Those break-ins that have occurred have resulted in little or no loss to property, RCMP Crime Prevention Programs Coordina-

tor Carrie Chattel (Cloverdale/ Port Kells district) writes in her August Downtown Business newsletter. In July, just one business break and enter in downtown Cloverdale was reported to Surrey RCMP. There was one shoplifting incident, four reports of other theft, three thefts from vehicles, one stolen vehicle and 12 false alarms,

the report says. Nevertheless, Chatell reminds local businesses to remain vigilant against crime and to keep a close eye on metal. “Copper theft still is our number one concern in regards to business,” she says. Cloverdale’s downtown core also saw a drop in property crime in June with just one reported break in. – Cloverdale Reporter

a silver medal. After going 3-1 in the round robin round, Cloverdale earned a spot in the semi final against Nanaimo. On the morning of the semi final game, Cloverdale lost one of their top pitchers to the flu, power hitter Markus Gregson. But Cloverdale rallied together and played an outstanding game against Nanaimo, beat-

ing them 10-5 in a very spirited game. Cloverdale scored a whopping six home runs in the game – two each by Evan Marlin and Josh Geerts, and one apiece by Jason Hill and Brendan Arabsky. Unbelievably, Cloverdale scored three of those home runs in a row. Cloverdale played a very strong West Kelowna team in the final game (in the hot, hot heat!) and succumbed to them, bringing home the silver medal. West Kelowna will now be representing B.C.

in the Western Championships in Newton this weekend. This group of 12 and 13-year-old boys were selected to play on the AA All Star team when the spring season ended in late June. A round of tryouts were held and the 13 boys were selected to play in the short but intense summer ball season. Eight games were played and the top four teams from the lower mainland earned a spot to represent B.C. in the provincials champion-

ship. Three teams from the Island also came, as well as the host team and a Prince George team. Cloverdale worked very very hard to prepare, practicing three times a week in addition to playing two games per week. It appears that all the hard work paid off! Congratulations to all the players and their supportive families, and a big thank you to the coaching team of Brian Arabsky, Brad Marlin and Graham West, and team manager Gary Mordecai.

Tribute band dedicated to the late Johnny Cash By Jennifer Lang Johnny Cash and his beloved wife June Carter Cash are now gone. But the legend of the Man in Black will live on next Friday night, when tribute band Big River performs at Cascades Casino in Langley. The West Coast-based band is devoted to presenting the recordings of Johnny Cash in the style and sound of the man himself. Singer Dave Pittet bears an uncanny resemblance to Cash, a country music outsider whose remarkable voice and artistic integrity earned him a permanent spot in the hearts

of generations of fans. Pittet’s own voice has been described as “More like Johnny Cash than Johnny Cash.” Call it destiny. One night after a show playing cover tunes, the veteran bar and club circuit singer picked up a guitar and started singing Ring of Fire, Cash’s signature song. After he finished, there was silence. Then a guy at the bar asked, “Are you Johnny’s twin? Because dude, this is what you should be doing.” Pittet and the rest of Big River are dedicated to creating the most authentic Johnny Cash tribute act the world has

ever seen. “It’s not only about the voice,” Pittet says. “It’s about liveing and breathing the man. His postures, his mannerisms, his moves and his quirks. I want our audiences to go home feeling like they just observed the man himself!” In a development that would no doubt please Johnny enormously, a June Carter Cash impressionist has been added to the Langley show. Tickets to the Aug. 20 show are available at guest services at 604530-2211. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.
