Soap box derby puts gravity into motion By Jennifer Lang Scores of local racers will be feeling gravity’s pull next weekend when the 2010 Clover Valley Soap Box Derby rolls down 60 Avenue, uphill from Fraser Downs. Dozens of racers have signed up for this year’s action, where the home-built, gravitypowered racers get their start on a ramp at the top of the hill, competing in qualifying heats to determine who makes it to the finals. The fun, family event is hosted by the Clo-
ver Valley District of Scouts Canada Saturday, Sept. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., providing plenty of time for you to drop by and cheer them on. The Clover Valley Soap Box Derby is only open to home-built cars created to specifications outlined by organizers, such as approved wheels and bearings, building materials and parts. The body and decorations are left up to the builders, ensuring each racer is completely unique, with different shapes and designs.

It’s important to get started early – it takes at least 50 hours to complete a racer from start to finish. The races are open to girls and boys aged eight and up. The cars can travel at speeds of approximately 50 to 60 km/h. In the old days, they were built from soap or orange crates with roller skate wheels, but they’re more specialized today. Most are built with fibreglass or aluminum. Entrants build them at home. Home-built, gravity-powered.

HST is ‘safe’ for five years To the editor;
Re: “Sorry, the HST isn’t going anywhere,” Aug. 27 There is a lot of talk about the B.C. government eating crow over the HST. It is more likely that Bill Vander Zalm will be eat-
ing humble pie once the charade comes to an end. The HST goes to a committee dominated by B.C. Liberal government members, who will decide if it goes on the order paper for a vote in the legislature or is decided by referendum in the
next B.C. election. The B.C. Liberal government sets the agenda on the legislature and the HST could die on the order paper when the legislature prorogues. If it goes to referendum, it will need at least a 40 per cent vote
of all those on the voters’ list in all constituencies to pass. A noshow is a vote for the HST. By contract with Ottawa the HST is safe for five years. Fred Perry Surrey
Water woes were worrisome To the editor;
While my mailbox (and likely those of many other multi-unit residences) is inundated with gratuitous, commercial crap, it’s unbelievable that truly useful – and perhaps even life-saving – really necessary information, such as the recent E. coli contamination of mostly White Rock (but one day perhaps the Cloverdale area) drinking water can (at least seem to) be kept at a minimum. I could not find anything on the matter on TV, and only 1130 AM offered any occasional insight. I had already consumed a cup full of raw water at my apartment by late Saturday (Au-
gust 21) morning before my mother contacted me immediately upon her receiving a warning from a neighbor at her residence, about a kilometer away. Although a single notice was posted at both locations, why not – especially in regards to health matters – give each apartment and condo unit its own fully-informative notice under the door?! What’s quite worrisome is that if there’s a considerable deterioration in the quality and consumption-safety of our drinking water, will there be a repeat of the Walkerton, Ontario, tragedy?

A barnstormer’s picnic
By Jennifer Lang When B.C.’s Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Steven Point, touches down at the Canadian Flight Museum in Langley Saturday, it’s a sure bet he’ll impress the aviation buffs in the crowd. Point is being flown to the museum’s annual members’ day picnic in true barnstormer fashion – inside a vintage 1937 Waco AQC cabin biplane. It’s the plane flown by B.C.’s “Flying Doctor”, Dr. Jack Pickup, who served isolated work camps and patients living in remote coastal communities, where the aircraft doubled as transport and an ambulance. The annual event is for members – but the public is welcome to join the festivities. The museum is offering new members with a special $20 deal as an incentive to join. There will be games, a salmon and baron of beef barbecue, make-your-own sundae bar, and more. Plus, visitors have a chance to win a flight-seeing tour inside the WW2 Harvard Trainer airplane and a complimentary

Change of venue puts run front and centre Branch 6 of the Cloverdale Legion helps host the Terry Fox Run
JENNIFER LANG PHOTO
Kimberly Sparling, right, says having the same kind of cancer as Terry Fox made it less scary. She lost part of her right leg. Terry lost part of his left one.
‘I was Terry Fox crazy!’ From front page
At 18, Kimberly was diagnosed with osteoscarcoma, the same type of bone cancer Terry had, and her right leg was amputated above the knee. She also endured grueling rounds of chemotherapy before and after her operation. Knowing she had the same kind of cancer as Terry “made it less scary,” she says. “I felt very comforted by it, and I held onto that comfort the entire time I was battling my sickness. I was reading books about him, Googling ‘Terry Fox’, watching movies about him. I was, like, Terry Fox crazy.” As she lived through the scariest, most traumatic experience of her life, Terry Fox “was like a comfort blanket, almost.” Meeting his parents
Rolly and Betty Fox brought it even closer. “I do feel like I’m talking about a friend, even though I never met him.” An athletic girl all her life, Kimberly was determined to complete the Terry Fox Run that first year. She was joined by her friend Chris, a boy with the same kind of cancer as she, and a fellow amputee. They’d even had the same surgeon. It took four hours to finish the course. But they did it. Chris died a few months after that, but Kimberly stayed involved with the run. The last two years, she’s volunteered with the organizing committee – her commitment spurred by her mother’s 2008 breast cancer diagnosis. Since the Terry Fox Foundation supports research for all types of cancer, “It just made
sense to spend more time with an organization that was near and dear to our hearts,” adds mom Lynn Sparling. The event itself is a touchstone that connects cancer survivors, enabling them to draw support, encouragement and friendship from one another. “You get taken in. Overwhelmed. Filled up,” says Sparling. “It’s different from a race. It’s fun. It’s family. Just come out and participate,” adds Lynne Robinson. Robinson says something Donna White, the provincial coordinator for Terry Fox Foundation, said to her helped change her entire outlook. “She said, ‘You are the face of hope’. I’d never thought of that before.” Survivor, yes. But now when she looks in the mirror, she sees hope, too.

‘Senior Star’ set to sparkle Long-time singer competes at national talent contest
By Jennifer Lang With a dazzling smile, piercing blue eyes, and warm, inviting laugh, you only have to meet her to know Cloverdale’s Irene Reed is a star. And next month she’ll have a chance to prove it to a panel of judges in a national talent contest. On October 18, she’ll compete against nine other contestants for the title and grand prize at the 2010 Senior Star competition in Toronto. Whatever happens, she already feels like a winner, says Reed, an Edmonton-born singer who’s been performing all her life. On a whim, the 75-year-old entered the Chartwell Seniors Housing Senior Star regional competition at Langley Gardens in June – contestants didn’t have to be residents to enter. She beat out 13 others to qualify for the semi-finals. In August, she learned she was one of 10 finalists chosen to compete in the finals in Toronto. Celebrity judges Gordie Tapp of Hee Haw fame, Tim Louis, and Dan Clancy narrowed the field from nearly 500 performances. The news came as a complete surprise. “I’m the only one chosen out of all of western Canada,” says Reed, who will represent Surrey. She and her husband Bud will fly out for the show at the Carlu concert hall, a historic venue in Toronto where the contestants will perform with a full orchestra. Their flights, hotel accommodation and ground transportation, are all free. Win or lose, Reed will see friendly faces in the crowd. Along with her husband and daughter, several friends will be in the audience to cheer her on, too. She’s planning to sing “Come Back to Sorrento,” the dramatic Italian love song made famous by some of the world’s best-known voices, including Elvis Presley and Dean Martin to Luciano Pavarotti. Songs must be under 5 minutes long. First prize is a trip worth $5,000. The national contest, now in its fourth year, is open to anyone 65 or older. It’s the largest celebration of seniors’ talent in Canada. Surrey seems to be something of a wellspring for senior talent; Dan Miner of Surrey was among the 2009 finalists. Reed figures she might have an edge because she’s had so much experience performing in front of an audience. She regularly sings at Langley United Church, and as a soloist at two churches in Vancouver, and is in demand at weddings and funerals.
MORE FRAUDSTERS
Last month’s warning from the local Surrey RCMP district office about a fraudulent fire extinguisher inspector has prompted reports of other fraud complaints from Cloverdale businesses. The complaints vary from fraudulent billing to “extremely aggressive door-to-door sales and email fraud, Surrey RCMP Crime Prevention program coordinator Carrie Chatell (Cloverdale/Port Kells detachment) writes in her latest edition of Downtown Business News. She reminds people to keep up their guard and to tell their employees to remain vigilant about potential fraud artists targeting local businesses. One way to fight back is to file a complaint with the Canadian AntiFraud Centre (formerly known as Phonebusters), a program jointly managed by the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police and the Competition Bureau of Canada. To find out more, call 1-888-495-8501 or visit www.phonebusters.com.

The company that operates Cascades Casino in Langley is under new ownership. A group of former lenders will take over ownership of Gateway Casinos, which is being restructured. Gateway Casinos owns nine large casinos, including the Starlight Casino in New Westminster, the Grand Villa in Kelowna and the Lake City Casino in Penticton. The restructuring will knock off $1 billion in Gateway’s debt, spokesman Rick Orzy said. Cascades staff will keep their jobs and nothing will change – other than $100 million in investment, Orzy said. The majority ownership now falls to Catalyst Capital Group, a Toronto based investment company that’s one of Gateway’s main creditors. Langley City will continue to collect $10 per cent of Cascades’ revenue, which has added up to more than $20 million since it opened in 2005. – Black Press

Almost two-thirds of the farmland removals were in Delta. The statistics include formal exclusions of land from the Agricultural Land Reserve as well as other dedication of farmland. The South of Fraser area accounts for three quarters of all ALR land in Metro Vancouver, with the primary crops including vegetables, berries, greenhouse produce and ornamental plants.
Government road builders have paved over far more farmland than private developers in the Surrey-Delta-Langley area over the past decade, according to a new study. More than 70 per cent of the 264 hectares of land removed from farm use over the past 10 years were for provincial government transportation projects, concluded author Nathan Pachal, co-founder of the transit advocacy group South Fraser On Trax. Mother makes plea to locate hit and run driver
By Kevin Diakiw Every time Anne MacKay hears a bus at the corner, she expects to see her son get off. However, 19-year-old Shamus MacKay won’t be coming home. He got off a bus on Fraser Highway just east of 168 Street on Feb. 4 of this year and was hit by a 2008 to 2010 Volkswagen City Jetta. After striking MacKay, the vehicle fled eastbound. Shamus died at the scene. Days later, police received a call from a lawyer saying his client wanted to turn himself in. “Arrangements were made for this to occur, and it appears that this individual has not followed through with the
intention to turn themselves in,” said RCMP Const. Peter Neily, who added subsequent attempts to contact the lawyer have been fruitless. Anne said it’s been extremely difficult losing her son. “He’d give the clothes off his back to people if anyone was in trouble, he’d be the first one to help them,” she said. “He was loved very much, a good guy, and he wouldn’t hurt a fly.” She urged the driver to come forward and do the right thing. “We all make mistakes in life and do thing that sometimes we wonder why we did it,” Anne said. “I just hope somebody could come forward to put it to rest for
Shamus.” Police are asking anyone who knows anything about the accident, or who knows someone with a City Jetta that they have not seen for a
while. to come forward. “This person does not deserve your loyalty and we need a phone call from you as soon as possible,” Neilly said. Police are still not sure
of the colour of the vehicle, but have obtained a list of all registrations of those vehicles throughout the province and are currently investigating that list.
Police are also asking anyone with that model of car within those years to come forward so they can quickly reduce the list of potential suspects.
If you have any information regarding this accident or a vehicle of this description, call Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502.

Highlights: It was a hard fought game in wet conditions, but no stopping a potent Bengal running attack from multiple Cloverdale backs, Ryan Hooseman, Patrick Cho, Tyrel McDonald and quarterback Shane Ram. Strong defensive pressure from d-ends Max Grouette and Sheldon Van Roon funneled runs into the middle where linebackers Clayton Andrews, Brandon Craig and Spencer Hout’s tackling prevented a very quick Chilliwack backfield from gaining any significant yardage. Strong offensive and defensive line play by Patrick Gurtas, Andrew Hubert, Brad Goodchild, Manny Gill, Max Grouette and Justin Bindanhu.
