McCallum named CEO of racing society
Doug McCallum
By Jennifer Lang A former mayor of Surrey is coming to the aid of B.C.’s harness racing industry. Doug McCallum has been hired as part-time CEO of Harness Racing BC to help the society meet operational goals. It’s hoped McCallum’s expertise in the areas of fundraising and sponsorship will help generate financial support for harness racing and raise awareness in the community, Harness Racing BC President Jim Vinnell said in a statement on the society’s website. McCallum will help set up a plan of operations,
along with providing assistance in the areas of sponsorship and fundraising. The society represents owners, trainers, drivers and breeders of standardbred horses in B.C. Standardbred horses are used in harness racing, the type of racing at Fraser Downs, where the 2010 fall season is in full swing – albeit under a cloud of uncertainty. Racing dates for 2010 were cut back by 30 per cent and 2011 dates temporarily rescinded while the province, the B.C. Horseracing Management Committee and Great Canadian Gaming Corp. figure out

what’s best. Last month, current mayor Dianne Watts – who unseated McCallum in 2005 – revealed the city was in talks with the Whitecaps to bring its SFU soccer training facility to Fraser Downs. Meanwhile, reports are surfacing that a new agreement plan for harness racing in B.C. will set out 70 guaranteed dates for 2011, with three days of racing a week from January to April and from October to December, plus 12 further dates as incentives provided certain objectives are met.

To him, it’s not a hypothetical risk. He knows of a friend’s mother who had been pleading for the city to do something about speeding traffic in Whalley – then a little girl was run over. “Is that what has to happen before the city goes, ‘Oh, they’re going too fast?’” he wonders. In collecting signatures on the petition, he’s spent time chatting with neighbours. One woman told him her china cabinet rattles when cars go by. Someone else’s pet cat got run over. In his pursuit of answers, Tomyk says he’s been told by several officials it’s not city policy to install speed bumps or roundabouts on arterial roads. Tomyk said the city conducted a traffic study in August to measure traffic speeds and volume on 72 Avenue between 189 and 190 Streets. He was given the results last week. They showed an average daily volume of 7,471 vehicles between Aug. 14 and 20. The 85th percentile speed was 66 km/h, meaning the majority of drivers
were traveling at or below 66 km/h. He points out the study also showed 15 per cent of the traffic was traveling at speeds of 70 to 80 km/h or higher. “People shouldn’t be going ridiculous speeds on a road that’s posted 50,” he says. He’s disappointed by the city’s response, because residents are once again being told it’s a traffic enforcement matter for the RCMP – because 72 is an arterial road. And while sympathetic, the RCMP have said they can’t be there every day to perform traffic patrols, according to Tomyk. “It’s been a very long frustrating process dealing with this,” he said. “Nothing has changed. The city is still pushing that it’s a policing problem.” He’s aware of a neighbourhood four blocks away on 68 Ave. which has roundabouts and wonders why the city can’t do the same here, if that’s what residents want. Some have suggested banding together to pay for stop signs themselves. “For a city that just keeps preaching that the safety of its citizens is so important, it just blows me away.”
LAST DANCE Surrey dancers Danielle Gardner and Nathalie Heath have been eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance Canada, the grueling TV competition that wraps up Oct. 24. Gardner, 21, and Heath, 23, did not make it to the final four last week. The Top 4 (Amanda Cleghorn and Denys Drozdyuk from Ontario, Janick Arseneau from New Brunswick and Jeff Mortensen from Alberta) took to the stage for the final performance show on Oct. 20 on CTV and the winner will be revealed during a special two-hour live season finale this Sunday, Oct. 24.

A fire at a home south of Cloverdale involved in a recent shooting has been ruled accidental. Surrey RCMP and the Surrey Fire Department have determined the blaze at 17692 24 Ave. was not intentionally set. The Oct. 13 fire appeared to be coming from the basement of a home on the property. The residents escaped unharmed. On Oct. 7, the body of Randall Davis, 51, was found at the end of the home’s driveway. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
SHE’S ‘NET SAVVY She’s one of Surrey’s savviest social networkers, Tweeting her latest adventures and projects and constantly updating her FaceBook page – whether she’s
dangling from an office tower for charity, or letting constituents know about her latest project. And later this month, SurreyPanorama Ridge MLA Stephanie Cadieux hosts a Social Media workshop – in honour of Small Business Month. The free workshop and business seminar is aimed at Surrey Stephanie Cadieux and Vancouver-based businesses. It’s being led by social media strategist Russel Lolacher, who’s with Liberal caucus communications. It takes place Oct. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Mink Chocolate Cafe, at F110 15755 Croydon Drive. By Jennifer Lang Hundreds of Cloverdale soccer players will be in the pink this weekend, as the Surrey Breakers Athletic Association hosts its first-ever Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend. Each player is wearing a pink Tshirt during their Oct. 23-24 games. And family and friends are also encouraged to buy a pink tee for a good cause; the shirts sell for $12, with proceeds from T-shirt sales going to support breast cancer research. But the Breakers’ “Kicks for Cancer” campaign doesn’t end there.
Saturday, teams are decorating bras as part of a display at Marketplace IGA to highlight the weekend’s cause. The bra with the most votes wins. Players are also selling cupcakes and Fight Like A Girl pins from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the store. The Cloverdale-based, all-female soccer club boasts about 850 players who will be spreading the message on fields from Surrey to all parts of the Lower Mainland. The players range from girls aged five to women in their 40s. Some players’ moms play in the women’s program.

Pay parking is just a cash grab To the editor; The last thing the residents and businesses need in Newton is pay parking. As a long time resident of Newton and as a person with a business and many friends who live in Newton, I can tell you people are not amused. No consultation, no explanation, no justification. Amongst all the claims of open local government; and our
local leaders claims of how they want to listen, this is almost like a mini HST affair. No one said this was coming – actually in light of pay parking having been removed in Newton, when it was arbitrarily installed in front of the now defunct Casino (another loss for Newton), one would feel comfortable with the notion pay parking wouldn’t return. We don’t need another cash
To the editor
grab. The City of Surrey just decided some one has to suffer, and it will be Newton. Guildford said no, Whalley said no, and we say no.
Our taxes already paid for the roads, and they now pay for the upkeep and transit. If all the “anywhere, any kind, any type of development” and massive growth everywhere isn’t enough to pay the bills for the City, then we have a problem and the problem is in City Hall. Gary T. Robinson, Proud resident of Newton
The Tories are on a spending spree To the editor; The latest economic update given by Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, shows that program spending will increase by another $21 billion in the next five years. This will elevate this year’s deficit to a Canadian record of $55 billion! These numbers are reminiscent of the big spending Liberal budgets of years gone by. The infiltration of the Conservative Party of Canada by the Red Tories has been seen for a number of years already and now it is to
the point where one can hardly tell the difference between the two main parties on the federal political scene. Voters need to ask what happened to the ‘small government’ Conservatives that we elected in 2008? Never mind crazy ideas to build hockey rinks, Canada’s national debt stands to extend past the $625 billion mark by 2015, and the bureaucracy continues to be expanded. This year it has grown by another 3.4 per
The Cloverdale
cent, now topping the 300,000 employee mark. It’s time for Canadians to start demanding less of their government! Instead of continuing in the red ink, it’s time for some bold leadership that is intent on bringing in fiscal restraint, so future generations are not left paying for the liberal spending habits of today! Mike Schouten, CHP candidate South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale

Mad about Morocco By Jennifer Lang He was so impressed, he bought the camel, too. Well, just a little one that fit inside his suitcase. Cloverdale’s El Fedewich – seen at right wearing traditional garb – caught the spirit of Morocco during a recent trip to Marrakech for the 2010 International Congress of Notaries, which he attended along with his wife, Noreen and a small delegation from B.C. More than 1,800 delegates from 72 countries attended the Oct. 2-6 conference, networking and CONTRIBUTED PHOTO discussing various issues, Notary El Fedewich with his souvenir fez hat with topics ranging from and camel.
AUDITIONS Surrey Little Theatre hosts auditions for its February production, the musical You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, based on the enduring Peanuts comic strip. “We’re looking for people of all ages who can sing and dance and the auditions are open to everyone,” director Allan Thain said. The SLT doesn’t normally produce musicals, he said, but the troupe’s
younger members encouraged Thain to take a stab at directing one, “because there appeared to be very little opportunity to perform in musicals after high school.” Auditions are Saturday, Oct. 30 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the Surrey Little Theatre, 7027 194 St. Candidates are asked to prepare a short vocal selection. There won’t be a pianist on hand, so if you want accompaniment, bring your own
the environment to money laundering. Fedewich, who’s been a notary for 32 years, says the event was very informative. He says international conferences are held every three years in a different country. Other members of the B.C. contingent were retired notary Roy Bishop and his wife Betty, Secretary of the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia, Wayne Braid and his wife Lorie Salvador of Terrace, B.C., and Ken and Marjorie Scherk.

Interesting uses of Enzymes Pharmacist
By Jennifer Lang Young pumpkin carvers, here’s your chance to show the world how
Most people know that enzymes are for digestion. Very few people know that they can be used for inflammation, cholesterol problems, detoxification, and weight control. For these special purposes, they have to be taken in high doses and on an empty stomach. When there Dr. Henry CHeng is no food in the GI tract for them to digest, enzymes are absorbed by M-cells (multifolded cells) of the intestinal mucosa and transported in the blood by a special carrier protein called α2-M (alpha-2-macroglobulin). When they reach the site of inflammation, they help break down the adhesion molecules in the debris. When the debris is cleared up, our body’s own defense cells can reach the inflammatory site and achieve healing. It has been shown that concomitant use of enzymes and anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics may increase the penetration of the drugs. Enzymes are also believed to directly interfere with the inflammatory process mediated by bad interleukins, and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Enzymes are known to have worked when anti-inflammatory drugs failed, in conditions like arthritis, sports injuries, strains and sprains, tendonitis, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, allergies, asthma, sinusitis, eczema, inflammatory bowel diseases, prostatitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatism, fibrocystic breast disease, etc. Another interesting use is in vascular diseases. Here they can digest and break up blood clots in capillaries and cholesterol plagues in the artery walls Similarly, their ability in breaking down debris and cleaning up toxins is being utilized in their use in cancer and amyloidosis. The action of enzymes is hugely affected by the pH of the environment. Hence an enteric-coated preparation called Wobenzyme® works better because the coating protects the enzymes from destruction by stomach acid. In order to preserve the integrity of the coating, these pills need to be swallowed whole, i.e. not to be cut, crushed or chewed. Side effects are rare. In order to enhance the anti-inflammatory action, the German manufacturer put in Rutin in their Wobenzyme®. Rutin is a bioflavenoid that can reduce the permeability of vessel walls, hence enhancing tissue penetration. Enzymes are fast gaining popularity as an adjunct in treating inflammatory conditions. In some European countries, enzymes have become mainstream treatment. In fact, in Germany, Wobenzyme® ranks second among all OTC medications sold, ahead of Tylenol® and Motrin®. Enzyme preparations are invaluable when other remedies fail to bring relief. – Dr. Henry Cheng is a medical graduate of the University of London, England, and is now Natural Health Products Consultant at Cloverdale Pharmasave Health Centre.

MERRITT COMEBACK
Two for tea
After a one-year hiatus, the Merritt Mountain Music Festival – B.C.’s biggest country music festival – is launching a comeback in 2011, organizers announced last week. A decline in attendance and the high cost of attracting big name performers forced organizers to put the festival on hold in 2010, but public demand persuaded Active Mountain Entertainment to bring the festival back. The 18th annual Mountainfest Music Festival 2011 is slated for July 7 to 10. This year’s headliners haven’t been announced yet. Tickets go on sale Nov. 15, with lower prices for admission and camping.
