2011 race dates set Live harness racing guaranteed to next December
By Jennifer Lang There will be live harness racing at Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs next year, officials with the company that owns the racetrack and casino announced last week, ending weeks of speculation by the harness racing community. At least 70 racing dates are guaranteed in the 2011 standardbred schedule, with three days of racing
a week from January to April, and at two race days a week from October to December, plus 12 extra dates next fall if wagering and other criteria are met. A six-month season is shorter than previously at Fraser Downs, where live races ran 10 months, September to June. The rationale is to prevent overlap with thoroughbred racing at Hastings Park, also owned by
Great Canadian Gaming Corp., to bolster betting pools and attendance. “It gives us the ability to totally market each track on its own for live racing and not compete,” Howard Blank of Great Canadian said. He credited the hard work and cooperation between standardbred owners, the provincial racing

committee, the province and Great Canadian management for coming to agreement. “We feel this was the best balance for all,” Blank said. The conditional 12 fall dates would bring the number of racing dates next year to 82 days. But those extra dates are subject to performance-based measures – and approval by the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch of B.C., putting pressure on an already uncertain industry. The next step is to boost attendance, increase wagering, and raise the sport’s public profile. Expect to see more promotions designed to draw bigger crowds to Fraser Downs, such as “major outdoor concerts” and live cooking events with chefs, Blank said. The announcement comes a month into
the fall season at Fraser Downs, where race days are two days a week – Friday and Saturday nights. But it allays fears that there would be no racing next year. While Blank wouldn’t speculate how racing might look in 2012, he did concede that the stakes are high for the 2010/2011 season. “I think all eyes will be on this year,” Blank said. “I don’t think anybody should be worried about 2012.” Horsemen have been reeling since August, when racing dates for 2010 at Fraser Downs were cut by 30 per cent and the 2011 race schedule was temporarily rescinded pending further discussions. The B.C. Horse Racing Management Committee and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation are still reviewing B.C.’s horse racing industries in an effort to balance declining revenues and devise a longer-term vision.

The weather’s turning colder and there’s a fall chill in the air, prompting Surrey RCMP to issue a Block Watch Alert warning to motorists who warm up their vehicles before heading out in the morning. Thieves are looking for idling, unsecure vehicles and stealing them. Drivers are reminded not to leave their vehicles unattended when it’s not secure – or when it’s running. Fall is also a good time to remember to remove everything from your vehicles at night, including garage door openers. You may also consider changing your garage door opener to a key fob model that can be purchased from any specialty door company. Report all suspicious and illegal activity to police immediately by calling 604-599-0502 or 9-1-1.

exercise promotes parent involvement, bringing people together to choose components and pick out themes, something parents have appreciated in the past, Strachan said. “It’s a bit of a trade off in that the playground isn’t immediately available,” he said. Up to $25,000 in playground grants are available for new schools – $10,000 from the school district and up to $15,000 from the city of Surrey. The Adams Road Parent Advisory Council has already applied for both the $10,000 district grant and a grant from the city, school principal Joanne Berka said. But that still leaves a $25,000 gap for the PAC to close before the playground can be installed, Harasymow said. The gap prompted the school to enter an online competition for $25,000 in project funding through the Aviva Community Fund. Help is needed if the school is to make it to the next qualification round. The school is asking for the public’s assistance in securing on-line votes before Nov. 5 as part of the selection process. To vote, visit http:// www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf7171. Registration is required to ensure fair voting. Approved projects
will be announced Jan. 25, 2011. As the parent of four young children – the eldest is in Grade 2 – she has a stake in having a playground at Adams Road Elementary as
soon as possible, she said. “I want them to be happy there,” she said. “I want them to be active. You want the best for your kids, you know?”
Harasymow remains baffled that a school district would build a new school but not include a playground. “In my opinion, boredom equals trouble. I’ve got three boys.”

Cloverdale needs a local voice To the editor; How do you get a message out that Cloverdale needs a Ratepayers Association? I had a personal meeting with the Planning Department on Thursday, Oct. 14. The City of Surrey said even after the focus meeting on Tuesday that it would be a year before any decision on building codes and bylaw enforcement was going to happen. I said, that is when the election is – you are doing nothing. To stop the progression of monster houses, keep the three, four, and five-suite houses away,
keep our neighbourhoods safe, uncrowded. Keep our equity in our houses. (Areas of Surrey that started the monster houses had only their land value for their worth. They could not sell to anyone except developers. It has started happening in Cloverdale.) People really do not know that Surrey is now 40 per cent South Asian. City Hall has lost control of Surrey. The only thing left is to do what St. Helens, Panorama and Royal Heights did, opt out of City control. Only the Ratepayers have some

City needs to slow 72 Ave. speeders To the editor; Re: “Calling for calm on 72 Ave.,” Oct. 22 I am resident at 189 and 72 Ave. and agree that this is a serious issue. We have seen residents from the townhouse complexes across the way attempt to cross 72nd to take their dogs for a walk to the dog park. People wait on the street for some time before they can cross the street and run across the way. None of the cars will stop so that they can get across the street. Do you think the cars slow down when
they see people standing there? No!! There needs to be a four-way stop to slow people down, as this is ridiculous! Furthermore, it seems insane to me that there is not even a pedestrian crosswalk for these residents to cross the street safely. Many of these residents have children that attend the school at 190 and 70 Ave. How do they get to school safely? This is so dangerous. The City of Surrey needs to step up and do something about this issue.

control over house size and the number of suites allowed. I do not want Cloverdale to look like or live like Newton and Strawberry Hill, overcrowded streets, no trees, eight cars per house, too many people, too noisy, no privacy. We need a Ratepayers Association now, before it’s too late. I would be very interested if someone could assist or knows what to do. Save the equity in your homes. Is anybody else out there concerned? Students trick-or-treating for food bank Have donations ready Sunday By Jennifer Lang Along with filling up big bowls of candy and other Halloween preparations, residents of the Clayton and Hillcrest areas are being asked set aside something for the Surrey Food Bank, too. For the second year in a row, Clayton Heights Secondary students will be coming by Sunday afternoon collecting donations of non-perishables as part of their Halloween for Hunger food drive. It’s trick-or-treating with a twist. “No candy,” said Grade 11 student Nalin Dhillon, a member of the school’s Project Equal club. “All the food that we get will be donated to the food bank.” Students are heading out from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31. If you’re not going to be home but want to contribute, Nalin suggests hanging donations from the handle of your front door. Students collected about 2,500 food items last year, but the campaign took a number of residents by surprise. This year, they hope more advance publicity will help spread the word. The school’s Project Equal club was started by Shannon McLaughlan a couple of years ago. Since then, the club has built a school in Sierra Leone, through Free The Children, an international aid organization. “Now we’re trying to build a well for clean water, books, teachers’ salaries, things like that,” Dhillon said. The club also focuses on various community projects in Surrey. He said students hope to remind people that the food bank needs donations all year round – not just at Christmas time.

Artist has an eye for the details By Jennifer Lang Have you ever wondered what Cloverdale was really like 100 years ago? The Surrey Archives is home to a beautiful new addition to its documentary art collection that vividly brings historic Cloverdale to life, courtesy of artist Brian Croft. The Langley resident – known for highly detailed paintings of heritage landmarks of Vancouver and the Fraser Valley – has donated his recent work, Cloverdale 1913, to the archives at 17671 56 Ave. The wintery evening image is meant to be an accurate portrayal of how the “new heart of Surrey” appeared that year, back when Cloverdale was a transportation railway hub, seat of local government and the primary shopping and banking district of settlers. The windows of the “new” municipal hall beam with bright electric light – power that was available to customers who lived near the British Columbia Electric Railway, or BCER line, which opened its Fraser Valley branch line in 1910. Cloverdale 1913 is a work of art, but it’s also a work of visual history, archivist and curator Peter Johnson said at the donation ceremony Oct. 22, describing the work as “meticulously observed, lovingly created and intensely atmospheric.” The framed giclée print is on view at the archives until Oct. 30 (Saturday). Then it becomes part of the archives’ permanent collection, preserved for the research and enjoyment of Surrey residents. “We are extremely fortunate and honoured to receive this beautiful work of art,” Johnson said. “It will inform, educate and stimulate many future visitors to Surrey Archives.” Croft said inspiration struck during a

talk last October on Cloverdale’s heyday as a transit hub for the Interurban electric railway by local author and train expert Henry Ewert. The final product is the result of months of study and painting. Using historic photographs, old maps, a variety of archival sources and satellite technology, Croft re-mapped Cloverdale as it stood in 1913. Last Friday, he thanked manager of heritage services Jacqueline O’Donnell and reference specialist Ryan Ghallager for their valuable research assistance. “It’s really getting to know all the buildings and the businesses, and really feeling
like I knew them,” Croft explained later. “And I know so many secrets about Cloverdale,” said Croft, who also works from his own contemporary photos of streets and buildings. “People will tell you them as you stand there.” Working this way, he completes just four paintings a year, because, “Every brush stroke is referencing the photographs, so they’re all very contrived.” His close attention to detail turned up an unexpected discovery in one photograph he studied – a water fountain in the sidewalk next to the Parr House, home to one of Cloverdale’s original families.

It’s our date with Stargate By Jennifer Lang In some small way, Cloverdale, B.C., must have served as inspiration behind an episode of Stargate Universe titled “Cloverdale” airing tonight. The sci-fi drama beamed down to Earth this past May, spending two days on location in the historic Surrey town centre, with Cloverdale standing in for Cloverdale, VA, in episode five of the second season. The U.S.-Canada production shut down traffic on the 5700-block of 176 Street while a crew filmed a stunt sequence and other scenes. The Oct. 29 episode filmed
last spring will air on the Space Channel – finally giving Cloverdale residents a chance to see if they recognize any local landmarks. Cloverdale’s 176A and 176 Streets feature prominently in the short preview clip of the episode released on YouTube late last week. The critically-acclaimed show follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians trapped aboard the ancient alien spacecraft “Destiny” at the other end of the universe. The series stars Scottish actor Robert Carlyle as Dr. Nicolas Rush, along with Justin Louis,
MLA RISES TO CABINET Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux was sworn in as B.C.’s new minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development on Monday, as part of a shakeup of cabinet ministers. It’s the rookie MLA’s first cabinet appointment. Hers was the only newbie appointment in the shuffle. Cadieux was first elected in May 2009. The ministry replaces the former Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, helmed by Kevin Krueger. Other changes include the naming of Rich Coleman as new solicitor-general and George Abbott as minister of education.
Brian J. Smith, Jamil Walker Smith, Louis Ferreira, David Blue, Alaina Huffman and Elyse Levesque and Lou Diamond Phillips. The episode synopsis for “Cloverdale” sounds intriguing: It says, “Lt. Matthew Scott awakens to be pleasantly arriving home sweet home in Cloverdale, only to awaken once again in a manner unexpected and realizes he’s been infected by an alien organism and the rest of the team is frantically trying to figure out how to save him.” Stargate Universe airs Fridays at 7 and 10 p.m. on the Space Channel.
Health minister Kevin Falcon, MLA for SurreyCloverdale, retained his portfolio. Critics say the shuffle was an attempt by Premier Gordon Campbell to boost his approval ratings, which have slipped to a historic low of just 9 per cent, as well as the fortunes of the governing B.C. Liberal party. The appointment came two days before Campbell’s televised address, and a month before he’ll face a leadership review at the Liberal Party convention in Penticton this November. Constituency associations around the province have already voted on their support for Campbell as leader, and the results will be known at the convention.

Christmas lights will shine bright for the 5th Annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in historic Cloverdale. Our old fashioned parade with floats, marching bands, antique vehicles and horses will be joined by the amazing Santa’s Big Rigs for Kids. Parade organizers are working with the Island Equipment Owners Association to bring over a fleet of brightly lit semi trucks with highly decorated trailers. Parade visitors are encouraged to dress warmly and to bring either a non-perishable food item or a children’s toy that will get picked up by one of the members of the Surrey Food Band and the Surrey Christmas Bureau. At the end of the parade there will be a traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Square with a chance later for children to meet and greet Santa Claus.
