When the brand-new, $13 million school welcomed its first students, portables were already needed to accommodate everyone who showed up for classes. Two portables were required immediately. month – contrary to what Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon promised in October. School District 36 expects construction to be underway by mid-December or early January. The new classrooms are to be completed by August 2010 in order to help the school meet full-day kindergarten and future enrolment needs, Falcon said in a press release issued last month announcing the start of construction. “Surrey is a growing school district and although Hazelgrove is a fairly new school, it already has a
need for more space,” he said. The addition will create space for 90 additional students, boosting capacity to 450 students in Grades 1 to 7, and 40 more kindergarten students. Hazelgrove Elementary, located at 7057 191 Street in the Clayton Heights area, learned about the classroom addition last spring. The school has had two spare portable classrooms in place since September – in anticipation of the See GRADES / Page 2

one. But she found that it was worse – people would make fun of her. She just felt that it made her stand out more.” And she says speed bumps are probably out.
Several nurses in the neighbourhood have pointed out they slow down ambulances. “I respect that,” she says. Jackson’s not alone.
She says parents of hearing impaired children across B.C. share her concerns. One of those parents, Bobbi Taylor, also lives in Cloverdale.

Right here in Surrey we are seeing major upgrades to our healthcare system. Combined, the Surrey Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre which will open in Spring 2011 and the Surrey Memorial Hospital expanded ER and Critical Care Tower represent an investment of nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in health care. Earlier this year, I announced that we would be investing $250 million over the next two years in patient-focused funding. This will reduce surgical wait times dramatically across the Province. Taylor, who lives on 57 Avenue, is the mother of four young children under the age of six. Three have special needs, including daughter Kristen, 4 and a half, who has a hearing loss. Like Jackson, Taylor has added the word, “Deaf ”, to her sign. It reads: Slow – deaf kids at play. Before she added the word, 10 per cent of drivers would slow down when they saw the sign. Now, 90 per cent do – a vast improvement, she admits, but not good enough. “Neighbours still race past,” she says, adding she, too, started placing the sign out in the street out of frustration. Not everyone appreciates the safety message, she says, and aren’t afraid to make their feelings known. “They’re out and out rude, people,” she says. Taylor’s daughter does have a cochlear
implant, allowing her to hear some sounds, but it can come loose when she wears a bike helmet, she says. “The community needs to know that they are just kids and they need to be kids,” she says. “They’re dealing with adult issues. You need to give them those opportunities. But don’t take them away by not letting them play.” The Taylors tried petitioning the city for a special road sign soon after their daughter’s hearing loss was discov-

It takes an army of volunteers to sort donations and assemble Christmas hampers By Jennifer Lang The 200-plus donation boxes have been decorated with festive wrapping paper and deployed throughout the community awaiting your donations. Now, it’s up to you. Over the next few weeks, the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program is accepting donations of non-perishable food and other items. Now in its 19th year, the campaign is run by a coalition of various local churches, businesses, schools and other community organizations. Program lead Scott Napier says there’s always a tremendous response from local schools, particularly Clayton Heights Secondary School. Along with muchneeded donations from the public, the campaign relies on an army of volunteers who collect and sort donations, or assemble hampers – a massive undertaking. Last year, the program served more than 250 families and individuals. The hampers are packed with fresh vegetables and fruits, a turkey or a ham, plus canned goods like tuna, peanut butter, and kitchen staples such as flour and sugar. The Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program serves the Cloverdale area from 88 Avenue south to 32 Avenue and from 196 Street

The Cloverdale run raised more than $17,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, including $500 donations each from the legion and the ladies’ auxiliary.
Not yet within expectations? Here’s a tip. Always check, and double check, the facts – even when a prominent senior government minister is making a good news announcement. An Oct. 21 Education Ministry press release offers a case in point. The release quotes Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon trumpeting the start of construction on a $1.8 million addition at a local school. In the first line, Falcon says construction is set to begin in November on a four-classroom addition at Hazelgrove Elementary. “Although Hazelgrove is a fairly new school,” he said, “It already has a need for more space.” Well, that’s a bit of an understatement. But you wouldn’t know it from the press release, or from Falcon’s carefully-phrased comments. When Hazelgrove – in fact, not “fairly new” but nearly brand-new – welcomed its first students in September, 2009 – it was already too small to meet demand.
Canadian Army newsreels ‘scooped the world’
When it opened, there was space for more than 450 students in Kindergarten to Grade 7 at the $13 million school. But more students than that showed up on the first day of school. Two portables were required immediately, and soon grew to five. This year, there’s 10 (two are needed for children who will be displaced by the construction project) – and a student population of 713, according to the school’s website. In the press release, Falcon said the new classrooms will help alleviate some of the enrolment demands by providing space for 90 additional students. That would bring the capacity to 450 students in Grades 1 to 7 and 40 new kindergarten spaces. In other words, students are still going to be in portable classrooms. There’s another problem with the otherwise feel-good press release – construction on the new classrooms isn’t actually starting
this month, despite Falcon’s assurances (and the assurances of school trustee Laurae McNalley. As part of the tendering process, interested contractors were only just invited to inspect the school this past Tuesday, Nov. 9. The deadline for bid proposals is Nov. 23. A spokesman for School District 36 has confirmed construction is expected to start in December. That’s quite a bit later than the Hazelgrove Elementary school community was led to believe. And when the project’s completed, there will still be students in portables – they just won’t be in the primary grades from Kindergarten to Grade 3. Until then, we’ll be filing this press release squarely in the category of “not yet within expectations” and hope our MLA does his homework next time. – Jennifer Lang

And what might the Cloverdale of the future look like, according to designers and architects? Residents are invited to see for themselves next Thursday at the first in a series of evening discussions taking place at Surrey’s five town centres this month. Surrey’s TownShift Ideas competition was launched last November. The aim was to attract fresh ideas to help shape a vision of growth for each of the town centres. The competition received 137 submissions from designers in 21 countries imagining what Surrey’s five town centres – Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford,

DAVE’S NOT HERE, MAN Two men were arrested at a police roadblock in Langley last week after RCMP noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from their white van. The driver, a 31-year-old Abbotsford man, and the passenger, a 31-year-old Langley man, were arrested while police searched the vehicle at around 7 p.m. Nov. 4. Langley RCMP found a 33-gallon Rubbermaid container filled with approximately 50 stalks of what’s believed to be recently harvested marijuana. The men were released with charges of possession

The evenings are free. The first 50 people to arrive each night receive a 32-page booklet illustrating and interpreting selected TownShift ideas for that particular town centre. Trees up for adoption Climate challenge team sets goal of planting 100 new trees A club at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is going tree planting this fall – and you can help. The school’s Climate Challenge Team has launched a tree planting project. It’s one of the club’ initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of students. The goal is to plant more than 100 trees around the school and in the Cloverdale community.
Planting trees will reduce the school’s carbon footprint by producing oxygen and storing carbon. They help provide cleaner air, benefiting the school – and the community as a whole.
