Sullivan Hall will be saved

City will take steps to formally protect historic hall By Kevin Diakiw A long-fought battle to preserve one of Sullivan’s most significant heritage buildings has been won. Surrey council has agreed to enter into a Heritage Revitalization Agreement to preserve Sullivan Hall, at 6306 152 Street. A bylaw will be drafted to provide the hall further protection. Kelly MacNamara is the grandson of Wes Gillis, a Sullivan homesteader, who was a lifetime member of the association that owns the hall. About five years ago, MacNamara made it his mission to rescue the last piece of history in the area. A staff report to council indicated the hall is an important fixture in the Sullivan area and is worth saving. “Sullivan Hall is one of the last remaining significant historic buildings of the former Sullivan Village and has been listed on the Surrey Heritage Register for over 10 years,” the staff report states. “The hall is an excellent candidate for longer-

term conservation.” MacNamara is pleased to have the structure under protection. “I’m pretty happy,” MacNamara said. “Maybe 15 years ago, the hall was not old enough to be considered a heritage building.” He said now that it’s 75 years old and the fact that the community has lost several heritage buildings (including the Wes Gillis House), the hall has a higher degree of importance. “There’s actually nothing left except the hall,” MacNamara said. “Although it may seem early to put it into heritage, you just never know what’s going to happen.” According to a website devoted to the Sullivan Community Centre, the Sullivan area was first settled in 1866, and the community hall was built in 1928 by volunteers. It’s still in use, with groups renting it out for various functions, such as weddings and Christmas craft fairs. It was added to the city’s heritage register in 1998.

New FH chair named By Tracy Holmes White Rock resident David Mitchell has been named the new board chair of Fraser Health. Mitchell is a partner with KNV Chartered Accountants LLP and director of the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation board. He will “help to shape the direction of Fraser Health as we move forward,” said Dr. Nigel Murray, Fraser Health president and CEO. “David has been very

active in our community over the years… and his past experience in the

health sector and working with various stakeholder groups will be valuable to our organization.” Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon, who made the announcement, said he is confident Mitchell “will bring fresh ideas and a wealth of experience to the role.” Mitchell replaces South Surrey resident Gordon Barefoot, who stepped down last month after four years on the board, three of them as chair.

By Jeff Nagel A 25-year-old man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being beaten by an assailant inside a Cloverdale home Tuesday morning. RCMP officers responded to reports of shots fired just before noon at the house near 194A Street and 61 Avenue. There’s not yet any clear evidence the incident is drug- or gang-related, but RCMP Cst. Peter Neily

said it doesn’t look like a random attack. “It does at this time appear to have all the earmarks of a targeted incident,” he said. Neighbours say the victim emerged from the house with his face covered in blood before stepping into the ambulance. Police say the man was not shot but have not ruled out the possibility a gun was fired inside the house. – Black Press

By Jennifer Lang Brighten up a dull November day with trip to the Surrey Museum, where a new exhibit offers plenty of fascinating – and fun – ways to explore our relationship with light. Lighting up Your Life looks at light in every form, from the use of candle power and oil lanterns to flood lights and laser beams. Interactive displays give kids and adults hands-on ways to discover more about how humans, and even animals, use light. Ride an exercise bike to see how fast you have to pedal to power a light bulb, or arrange a set of prisms to turn a beam of white light into a multi-coloured rainbow, or spectrum. Use tiny mirrors to bounce a red laser beam onto a Sphinx figurine – not as simple as it appears. No exhibit about light would be complete without the electric light bulb, erroneously said to have been created by inventor Thomas Edison. Turns out, Edison created the first cost effective, long-lived light bulb, improving on technology invented by Humphrey Davy in 1809. The latest in light bulb technology is given its due, too. Compare LED technology with low-watt fluorescents, and gape in awe at the true size of street and traffic lights brought down to street level. One of the original bridge lights from Vancouver’s Burrard Bridge is on display, as is a decorative street lamp from Chinatown,

Multitasking? JENNIFER LANG PHOTO

A spectator at this year’s Remembrance Day service in Cloverdale seems absorbed in her handheld wireless device during the two minutes of silence observed at 11 a.m. in memory of Canada’s war dead.

Remembrance at a bargain

On Remembrance Day morning, there were three-hour border lineups of motorists headed to the U.S. Yes, it’s a statutory holiday. But somehow I don’t think the theme is getting a leg up on your Christmas shopping. The lineup at the Pacific Border Crossing at 176 Street was so long, traffic was backed up along 8 Avenue nearly to Highway 99. Minutes away the 10:15 a.m. service at the Cenotaph in Cloverdale was just about to start. While those folks were burning fossil fuels and inching along through the border crossing in a

quest for bargains, did it occur to them to give thanks to those Canadian service men and women (past and present) who help make the world safe? It’s bad enough people chose to spend Remembrance Day shopping. But couldn’t they at least shop at home on Nov. 11? Our local businesses need our support – especially this holiday season. Remembrance Day isn’t a stat for most Canadians. It’s not a stat holiday in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, or Nova Scotia. In most of Canada, Nov. 11 is a regular work day. Having a “day off ” on Nov. 11

is a privilege here in B.C. and one we shouldn’t take lightly. The number of Second World War veterans on parade in this year’s Remembrance Day service in Cloverdale was very small. The average age of Canada’s veterans of the Second World War is now 87. For many of them, taking part in the service and parade has become too physically taxing. They’re invited to hang out at Branch 6 during the service.

But each year, their numbers on parade are fewer and fewer. Earlier this year, we lost John Babcock, aged 109, Canada’s last veteran of the First World War – the Great War. There will come a time when the last living link to the Second World War will be gone, too. That day is coming sooner than you think. And I guess for some of us, that will probably seem like a good day to go shopping for bargains, too.

Drivers won’t slow down for kids One neighbour even threw a warning flag to the sidewalk, complaining about being inconvenienced To the editor; Re: “Moms fight to slow traffic”, Nov. 12 We have the exact same issue in our Walnut Grove neighbourhood. Due to some new road infrastructure, our street is now the main road to get into the neighbourhood. We put out big flags to warn drivers of

the 14 kids in four houses that are playing on the street. Some drivers slow down, but most ignore it and one set of neighbours (who have children) actually stopped and threw our flag to the sidewalk complaining how inconvenient it was for them to have to drive around the flag (that was placed in the centre of the street so

FALLING FARES Transit riders aren’t paying as much as TransLink banked on this year. A new financial report shows the average fare paid per rider declined last year and has held steady so far in 2010, despite the 10 per cent fare increase that took effect in April. One theory is fare evasion is on the rise, possibly due to the recession. TransLink expects to collect $430 million in total from the fare box this year, or about

37 per cent of its total revenue, according to its Q2 financial report.

He apparently climbed between cars on a stopped train and didn’t see the other train approaching. He suffered two broken legs and massive internal injuries.

Mystic’s magic

Like ‘being in cruise control from start to finish’ By Jennifer Lang A remarkable filly named Mystic Maiden has won her 12th consecutive win at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. Trained by Cloverdale’s own Justin Currie, 19, Mystic Maiden is gaining a glowing reputation as one of the hottest harness horses in North America. “She’s just a dream to have,” Currie told the Reporter earlier this fall. Tonight Mystic Maiden competes in Alberta,

her first time out of B.C., thanks to an amazing lifetime record of 19 wins out of 20. She was the oddson favourite heading into last week’s $75,000 Mary Murphy Stakes for three-year-old fillies on Remembrance Day. And if she felt the pressure, she sure didn’t show it, turning in a breathtaking gate-to-wire race and winning by six lengths. It was a personal best time of 1:53:2. Driver Dave Hudon described the trip as “be-

ing in cruise control from start to finish.” Veteran driver Jim Marino – who graced the winners’ circle four times that day – was also a hit with the crowd Nov. 11, when a number of stakes races took place. Marino drove Nobody Can to win the $75,000 Robert Murphy Memorial Breeders Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings. Nobody Can’s sister, Just Fiction, took the $40,000 B.C. Breeders Stake for two-year-old fillies earlier in the day, driven by trainer/driver Ed Hensley. She beat Cristina Lake by a neck. Marino also drove Branding Party to a photo finish in the $40,000 Breeders Stakes final for two-year-old colts and geldings.

Now in its 19th year, the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program (CCHP) has been providing local families in need with hampers of food, gifts and toys. Last year alone over 250 families and individuals experienced just that little bit of joy that they needed to get them through the holiday season. This program is a combined effort between many local churches, schools, businesses and public organizations. The program is growing each year and we would appreciate your involvement with donations of food, cash, new merchandise and/or toys. No donation is too big or too small – it all adds up.

I _____________________ would like to donate $_________ to the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program for their 2010 campaign. (

Hundreds gathered for Remembrance Day ceremonies in front of the Cenotaph at Surrey Museum Plaza.

Sacrifices honoured

By Jennifer Lang Hundreds gathered at the Cenotaph at Surrey Museum Plaza in Cloverdale last Thursday to remember the sacrifices of Canada’s service men and women and to pray for peace. The Holder family was among the many Surrey residents who turned out. Their first Remembrance Day service as a family certainly made an impression. Mom Deneen said described being moved to tears by the ceremony, while daughter Sharaya, 12, described the hour-plus service as “amazing. Veterans and members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 were joined by a large contingent of RCMP officers, emergency services personnel, air, navy and army cadets, Scouts and Guides at the services. The Cloverdale United Church Choir and the RCMP’s E Division Pipe band performed musical selections as

part of the service, which included an invocation and benediction by Rev. Jeffrey Koenig, who led a prayer of remembrance and peace. The service included the laying of wreaths in memory to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Imp eccably-timed vintage aircraft flying in formation performed three memorable flypasts – the first during the two minutes’ silence and the last one timed to the final moments of the ceremony. After the service, the

Colour Party led a parade back to the Cloverdale Legion, where participants warmed up with coffee, tea, hotdogs and other refreshments, and reminisced. Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon and MP Russ Hiebert (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) were among the dignitaries who came by the legion to pay their respects. The gathering at Branch 6 lasted all day, with performances by local entertainer Susie Francis starting in the afternoon.

Earlier, Surrey Museum and Surrey Archives opened their doors from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., welcoming visitors inside for Remembrance Day activities and informative displays.

Investigators on the scene of a serious crash at 176 Street (Highway 15) and 40 Avenue in Cloverdale.

Two airlifted after collision By Jennifer Lang Two people were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries early last Friday afternoon in Cloverdale after a pick-up truck collided with a tractor-trailer on 176 Street at 40 Avenue at around 12: 30 p.m. Northbound lanes on Highway 15 (176 Street) were closed between 32 Avenue and Highway 10 well

into the evening. Surrey RCMP said a pickup truck heading eastbound on 40 Avenue appeared to stop at the stop sign at 176, but proceeded into the path of the northbound truck. The larger truck struck the pickup on the passenger side. Driver inattention appears to be a factor, RCMP said. One of two dogs found inside the

pickup was found deceased. Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

ATARI TEENAGE RIOT Hey, kids! Play the ancient video games your parents keep telling you about – or aging gamers, relive a bit of console nostalgia. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the Surrey Museum is hosting a Video Game Play Day, a handson event devoted to the phenomenon’s early years. Try your hand at Atari 2600, Intellivision and the Colecovision, which, in one early version, actually required uploading the video game from a cassette tape before you could play Q*bert or other games. The play day comes with a warning: E.T. for the Atari 2600 – widely considered the worst video game of all time – will be available for play. Space is limited. Pre-register by calling 604592-6956. Knee pain

Q A

I twisted my knee at work. My knee is now painful and swollen. What can I do? A forceful twist to the knee may result in injury to the structures of the knee joint, this is characterized by pain, swelling and instability. The fact that you did not fall suggests that your knee injury may have been the result of one of the following factors: Biomechanics - muscle imbalance of the back/pelvis and lower limb, weak core stabilizing muscles, faulty pelvis and foot alignment, leg length difference or poor lifting technique. Work Environment - unsupportive footwear, lack of cushioning, hard or slippery surfaces and sudden changes in floor gradient. Equipment - lifting/pushing or pulling heavy equipment in an unstable postural position causing a repetitive overload / overuse stress to the knee. SELF-HELP MEASURES Ice the affected area for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day. A knee wrap may help to reduce the swelling. Footwear ensure a good supportive shoe with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Lifting bend at the hips and knees keeping your back straight. Avoid lifting and twisting your body at the same time. Face the correct direction before lifting. Do not work in a crouched position for long periods of time. A physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help relieve your pain.

Q

What is the difference between the Completion date, Adjustment date and Possession date?

A

Completion Date This is the date when the buyer pays the purchase price and becomes the registered owner of the property. It is also the date when the seller receives the purchase price and gives up ownership of the property. The buyer does not move in on the completion date.

Windows 7 enabling it to have a normal speed with much less ram. Microsoft recommends 1GB so boosting to 2GB will keep it running briskly for quite some time to come.

Q What is the maximum amount of ram you can put in a computer? This entirely depends on the computer, specifically the processor, mainboard & operating system. The newer the computer the more ram it can handle. Also some mainboards have 4 ram slots but most have only 2. The maximum amount of ram per slot is a 2GB stick. So if you have a board with 4 slots you can have up to 8GB’s of ram providing your CPU can handle it!

A

Adjustment Date It is usually the same day as possession. This is the date the buyers start paying for items such as maintenance fees, leases on equipment, property taxes and utilities.

Q I have a friend who complains about her enormous

phone bills to Europe. Is there another way to have some type of long-distance communication? She can use a variety of ways to communicate with her friends and family. The most common are Skype, Yahoo Messenger & Windows Live Messenger. All of these have web cam options to view friends. They all have the capabilities to call from computer to computer or computer to phone. Long distance included and always free of charge! The rule of thumb is to make sure you both have the same program. For example Yahoo.ca and Yahoo.com. It works best if you both have exactly the same program, upgrade & extension.

A

Possession Date Identifies the time and date of possession. The buyer receives keys and the sellers must have all of their possessions moved out of the home at this time. “Thinking of buying or selling? Call The Lunders today”

I’m a senior driver. When will I get retested? And what is the test like?

The Superintendent of Motor Vehicles (SMV) can ask for a retest at anytime but for seniors it usually occurs Lunders 4H Aug 22 gurmit when the SMV mails out medical exam kevinlunder@telus.net forms to random drivers approaching the age of 80. Your doctor must complete these forms and then the SMV decides if a retest is required. The SMV can also order a retest when notified by a doctor, police officer or family member who feels there is a public risk. In this case, you must book a test within 30 days. Before the road test, you will have your vision checked and be asked to identify some road signs and signals. During the test, the examiner will assess your skill level, your hazard perception and ability to enter a high-speed highway. (If you don’t wish to drive on freeways, you can have a restriction placed on your license, which eliminates that part of the test). If your first test is unsuccessful, you will be issued a learner’s license allowing you to drive with a licensed driver. You can try two more times (all tests are free of charge) but if you are still unsuccessful you must surrender your license. To prepare for testing, you may visit ICBC Driver Service’s for driving guides, find a driving workshop for mature drivers or seek professional help from a driving school. Good luck and safe driving! Is the interest on my student loan deductible for tax purposes?

Listings Wanted! “Free Market Evaluation No Obligation”

A

A student is allowed to claim a combined federal and British Columbia tax credit of approximately 20% of the actual interest paid in respect of a loan made under federal or provincial student loan programs. It is important to note that you cannot claim interest on any other kind of loan. This includes a student loan that has been combined with another kind of loan. A common mistake many students make is refinancing eligible student loans with other loans to obtain a slightly better interest rate or in order to consolidate their loans, but in the process they lose the tax credit on the interest paid. Please note that only you can claim the interest with respect to the loan even though someone related to you may have paid it. Additionally, unused credits may be carried forward up to 5 years. For additional information on this issue, please contact me at your convenience.
