who turn up to put on the rodeo each year. “There’s a real strong core of dedicated volunteers that have been involved for many, many years,” he says, adding he’s able to draw on their experience in learning the rodeo ropes. “They’ve been through this process so many times.”
He says many facets of the job attracted him, including the long history of the rodeo and of the association itself (it was originally established in 1888, he says). Also, he says, “I knew this was not going to be boring.” The association launched a nation-wide search in June, just weeks after last year’s fair wrapped up, when long-serving
general manager Bob Matwiv left his position. Association president Shannon Claypool said Melenchuk has a strong track record of strategic business development. “As we continue to evolve our event, it’s extremely important that we have someone with a strong sense of vision for growing the association and its programs,” Claypool said.

PET FRIENDLY Surrey is moving forward with building a large animal shelter in Cloverdale. The 17944 Colebrook Road shelter was before a land use meeting at Surrey council, the first public step toward building the facility. It will be located on eight acres of Agricultural Land Reserve, next to Cloverdale’s Hyland House homeless shelter. Part of the plan will be to allow homeless people with pets to obtain
shelter without leaving their furry friends. The facility will include an animal care and adoption centre along with a classroom community room, boarding kennel and livestock area. Mayor Dianne Watts said construction will begin in the spring of next year.
THINK BIG A big city needs a big sports stadium, says Mayor Dianne Watts, who believes it’s high
time Surrey got one large enough to host major sporting events. “I think it’s absolutely outrageous we don’t have such a facility,” Watts told Black Press, adding the city is prepared to put it “pretty much wherever it’s required.” Two weeks ago, junior football team Big Kahuna Rams left South Surrey Athletic Park for bigger facilities in Langley – McLeod Stadium, which seats up to 2,200 spectators outdoors. The departure ended
the club’s 60-year history in Surrey, and came despite lengthy discussions on what facilities would have kept the Rams here. She says more needs to be done for sports in Surrey, and a stadium built through a publicprivate partnership or senior levels of government would help fill the bill. “There’s nothing concrete at the moment, but we’re certainly having those conversations,” she said. – Black Press

been critical of how many parking spaces were initially allotted to their membership. Under the latest proposal, the Cloverdale Legion will have 117 parking spaces out of 221 planned for the site. Members were also initially reluctant to take on a mortgage. For now, the branch will own the legion facility outright, with an option to purchase the street-level retail space for $2 million. The branch could then rent out the retail space. Those leases would become an income source over time, providing ongoing revenue. Ostrom said the legion project won’t go ahead unless 40 per cent of the condominium units in the development are pre-sold. If not, the legion would remain where it is. Those arguments helped sway members in favour of the plan, which will still require approval by Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. The legion project is part of a larger revitalization plan for the City of Surrey-owned mall. The ultimate plan is to transform the nearly deserted mall and its expansive outdoor parking lots into an urban village with shops, townhomes and public spaces. “The idea is that there will be three to four hundred units in this project that will bring shoppers to Cloverdale,” said Jim Cox, president and CEO of Surrey City Development Corp. Most of the mall tenants moved out Oct. 31, except for the Cloverdale Sikh Society’s temple and a soup kitchen and cold weather shelter operated by a local church. Both have been given an extension to Jan. 31. Cox said the mall will be torn down in early February, with construction on the legion project, an adjacent three-storey mixed use building, and a westward extension of 57A Avenue from 176 Street starting early next spring.

CASINO DOWN Gaming proceeds for Langley City from Cascades Casino continue to drop.
The city received $127,000 less in gaming proceeds between July and September than it did during the same period last year. That’s an eight per cent drop, the city’s director of corporate services said. In 2006, the casino’s proceeds to the city were more than $7.4 million, but have steadily declined. Across the board, many casinos are seeing a 10 per cent reduction in revenues – one reason for the decline may be the province’s foray into online gaming, Darrin Leite said. The city’s portion of gaming revenues from the casino are used to help fund the Langley Seniors Resources Centre, a Grade 5 swim program and other programs. – Black Press

Depending on your particular circumstances, there are a number of tax planning strategies that may be beneficial for you and your family. These include the following: 1. Sell investments with accrued losses to offset realized capital gains in other investments. 2. December 31 is the last day to make charitable donations and receive a tax receipt for 2010. For any donations over $200 for the year, you receive a tax credit of 44.7%. 3. If you operate a business, you can accelerate your tax depreciation claim by making your purchase prior to the end of the year. 4. If you own a corporation, meet with your accountant to ensure that the salary and dividends paid to you in 2010 from your corporation meets your objectives.
An anti-theft system is a worthwhile investment in any vehicle though it may not be completely foolproof. Anti-theft devices come in three forms: Mechanical devices limit steering wheel movement - the best example would be a “Club.” Vehicle alarms that make noise (siren, beeping, flashing lights, etc.) discourage thieves by drawing attention to the vehicle or lastly: electronic immobilizer cuts power to the vehicle’s ignition system so thieves can’t start the vehicle. Don’t be a victim of theft. According to ICBC statistics sixty vehicles are reported stolen every day. Remember, during the holiday season, close your vehicle windows, lock your doors, store valuables out of sight (in your trunk), or better yet take valuables out of your vehicle altogether.

The latter may avoid the box if its rim is too high to step over comfortably, or if the box is in the basement down a flight of stairs. For cats who check out healthy, some reasons for not using the litterbox are: Not enough boxes. The ideal arrangement is one box per each cat in the home, plus one additional box, placed in different areas of the home. Shy cats are often kept from using a single box by a more dominant “bully,” and need escape options. Even a single cat will often use one box for #1 and a different box for #2. Box has a domed lid. To us this implies privacy, but to a cat this means less safety, as they cannot see potential danger approaching! Box is not clean enough. Cats are fastidious animals and some refuse to use a soiled litterbox even if they are the only ones using it. Using unscented clumping litter and cleaning out the box at least once a day can help these cats. Scented litter won’t, and may in fact deter cats from using the box. Surprises. Cats don’t like surprises, be it the washing machine or dryer startling them with a loud noise, or a change in the litter itself, or a change in their daily routine including the location of the litterbox. Place the boxes in quiet locations, and keep the old box while the cat gets accustomed to the new.
