Big spending MPs, Fonyo’s foibles, dashing rescues, and AWOL parrots – our annual look back at what made news during the past year By Jennifer Lang It will surely go down as one of the weirdest, wackiest years in recent memory. With dizzying highs (how ‘bout that gold medal haul, people?) and unexpected lows – a return to B.C.’s politics-as-blood-sport mentality, a development that saw both the premier and the leader of the official opposition step down rather unexpectedly as 2010 drew to a close. Here in Cloverdale we dealt with AWOL parrots, a summer of fires and dashing rescues, felt autumn anxiety in the backstretch, and wondered, is it true what the mayor

says: Are the Vancouver Whitecaps moving to Cloverdale? We said goodbye to the Old Cloverdale Mall, slated for demolition in early 2011. This is Part I of our look back at the headlines of 2010.

She didn’t want other kids to be bored during long hospital stays, with only dried up felt pens and cruddy art supplies to pass the time. Areas of Surrey and Langley experienced blackouts and phone service disruptions when a spate of copper wire thefts from power and phone lines inconvenienced thousands of residents. Telus spokesman Shawn Hall said the loss of 911 service is a major concern in these incidents. “It may seem like a victimless crime but these thieves are putting our customers’ lives at risk,” he said.

That’s how long the Olympic flame spent in Cloverdale during its speedy roll past the Surrey Museum (shrouded behind a two-story high Canadian flag) when thousands turned out to cheer the relay Feb. 8. It ignited a frenzy of Olympic fever, even if the relay didn’t actually stop here – Surrey’s official celebration was held later that night at Holland Park. The flame ignited in Olympia, Greece spent two days in Surrey as part of the longest single nation torch relay ever. By the time the relay was over on Feb. 12 at B.C. Place, the flame had been passed by 12,000 runners in every region of the country, from the high arctic to Haida Gwaii, over a distance of more than 45,000 kms.

Just in case we didn’t buy enough and receive enough during the holiday season . . . there are the January sales! At this time of year, many of us are mall-weary, and unhappily facing December’s aftermath in the form of our credit card bills. Yet, the stores are doing what they can to lure us back, and many of us are biting. Why? It seems we’re never quite content with what we have, even after a season of frenzied buying, giving, and receiving. Of course, we’re focused on more than just material things at this time of year. January is also the season of hopeful new resolutions to improve our health, our habits, or our relationships. And while resolving to make positive changes is a good thing, it can also be unsettling, as with every new year we see how many things still need improving. We’re never quite content with ourselves, either. What do we really need in 2011? Perhaps it’s something we can’t buy in a January sale. And perhaps it’s something we can’t do all by ourselves. I know that for myself this year, I’ll try to get less distracted by all the things I think I need and want, and focus more on gaining “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8). I know I’ll try to eat healthy and exercise more, but that those things in themselves won’t make me content; rather, I’ll admit that my greatest need is a spiritual one, for forgiveness and peace with God. What about you? What do you really need in 2011? Do you know where to find it? “There is great gain in godliness with contentment.” (1 Timothy 6:6)

A New Year’s prayer

You know things are bad when the Canucks are your last honest hope To the editor; Re: “Lower B.C.’s voting age? Well, duh,” Dec. 24, 2010 I see Mike de Jong is suggesting we have 16-year-olds partake in electing our MLAs. I think he suggested it because of the poor turnout by current eligible voters. It seems the electorate are uninterested so why not try and get some gullible youth voting instead? The real reason our citizens don’t turn out to vote is because they’ve been turned off by liars and baloney. Can you imagine a premier of a province getting a drunk driving charge and not resigning, and then having the gall to impose new draconian driving regulations? Or for that matter having a Leader of the Opposition not demanding his resignation? Why vote for either of them? As the Liberal Fiberal Bill Bennett said, “Gordon Campbell is a bully,” a despicable man who should be turfed. Thank goodness Gordo’s gone, the end of a cra--y era for B.C. politics. And to think those words never came out of Carole James’ mouth. Had they, she might still be leader. Her best speech ever was calling out her own dissident 13. She was tougher on them than she ever was on Gordo.

Lord only knows who the New Democrats will slide in as leader, let’s just hope he’s smart, articulate, engaging and able to call a spade a spade when called upon. As for them Fiberals, they’ve got lots and lots of baggage. They all ran like rats when the BC Rail scandal hit the fan. Christy Clark, Farrell Collins, Judith Reid to name a few. Too many of their immediate family members close to this one. Then there’s the HST lies, creepy cabinet ministers, lobbyists and hangers on at the trough. I don’t know how we ever survived it. I don’t believe they’re electable again. They’ve just taxed our poor province into unsustainable submission where small businesses are dying day in and day out, where people’s incomes keep getting pulverized and where the forestry/fisheries industries have been crushed out of existence. Better say a New Year’s prayer for our beleaguered province. The only thing it looks like we can believe in are the Canucks, they’re honest on the ice and at least they give us a fighting chance of success. Craig Dieno Comox

Youth will rise up – and vote To the editor; Re: “Lower B.C.’s voting age? Well, duh,” Dec. 24, 2010 Lower the voting age and we might have a reasonable government in place. But that whole scenario has the “chaff ” running scared. It’s a time of change and karma. The youth are our future. Let them rise. aprilreeves via www.cloverdalereporter.com

Passing lane? No thanks To the editor; Re: “Horsemen get their inside track,” Dec. 17, 2010 There’s nothing that deteriorates the quality of racing more than a “passing” lane. Now, the three or four quality horses in a race can battle it out the final 7/8ths, and a horse sitting 4th on the rail the whole mile can stagger up the inside and “steal” the money. Now I can stop trying to pick the best horse in a race and just play names or colors – NOT!!! Racetracks should worry more about reversal of form than stupid little gimmicks like “passing lanes”. steelpier via www.cloverdalereporter.com

The new format of the Cloverdale Rodeo seemed to be a hit, when more than 72,000 people swarmed onto the rodeo and fairgrounds over the Victoria Day weekend. The invitational format is in its third year. As well, organizers began reaching out to newer audiences. The Desi Mela, a one-day Indo-Canadian cultural festival drew 2,776 spectators for music and dance performances.

Prescription foot orthoses can provide relief, restoring proper foot function and alignment for your entire body. But be sure to see your local podiatrist for a comprehensive gait evaluation, biomechanical examination and a proper diagnosis on the cause of discomfort before considering orthotic treatment. He’s tops in poppy money By Jennifer Lang At the age of 90, a former resident of Cloverdale is a powerhouse fundraiser for the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poppy campaign. Back in November, Second World War veteran Syd Pratt topped his own amazing fundraising record, singlehandedly collecting $33,660 for the cause, his personal best. In 2009, he raised an already impressive $28,500 by selling the small red plastic poppies in the Kelowna area – one fifth of all the poppy funds raised by Branch 26 that year. With numbers like that, it’s little wonder he’s been elected treasurer for 2011. Pratt has been part of the poppy campaign each year for the past 20 years, surpassing his tally each time. He collected $4,000 that first year, canvassing businesses on Kelowna’s Bernard Avenue. “Every year he’s tried to beat the previous year,” his stepdaugher Sharon Anderson of Cloverdale said. “He’s so dedicated. He just loves it.” Now he covers all of downtown Kelowna plus large swaths of a commercial area along Highway 97. He canvasses Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for about six

or seven weeks before Remembrance Day. Pratt, who turns 91 in April, was a familiar face to many in Cloverdale, his home before he retired and moved to the sunny Okanagan. He worked at the Cloverdale Raceway, now known as Fraser Downs, and was involved with the Cloverdale Rodeo fairgrounds, Anderson said. Poppy funds are used to support veterans and their families.

Martial Arts MRS. KAREN BENNETT 5th Degree Black Belt

Q

There are so many martial arts schools out there. How do I choose one that is right for me and my child?

A

With so many options out there, there, the best way to figure out which school is right for you is to set up a free introductory lesson so that you and your child can experience a class. This way you can see how the instructors interact with the students and you can talk to current students and parents.

• Your personal T1 return must be filed by April 30, 2011. However, if you or your spouse is self-employed you have until June 15, 2011 to file the return. • You can contribute to an RRSP for the 2010 tax year until March 1, 2011. • If you have employees, you must file a T4 information return for the 2010 tax year by February 28, 2011. • If you are self-employed and primarily involved in the construction industry, you must file the T5018 Information Return for contract payments by June 30, 2011. • Corporations that pay dividends or certain types of interest must file a T5 information return for the 2010 tax year by February 28, 2011. • If you have provided a loan to your spouse, the interest for 2010 must actually be paid by January 30, 2011 in order to prevent the attribution rules from applying.

All personal photos should be put away, no exceptions. Buyers want to envision their own family in the house, and your personal pictures are a distraction. I once lost a buyer because the house they were viewing had so many pictures of the seller’s grandchildren that the buyer felt the owners should keep the house for them. Another buyer recognized a business associate in a photograph and felt they could not bargain with a colleague to buy their home. Better safe than sorry, put away those personal photographs.

GRANT McMASTER, CGA What are some important tax filing dates and deadlines for the 2010 year?

Pay your credit card bill or as much as you can because credit card interest rates can be as much as 18 % per annum. Restrict your future credit card purchases to the amount you can pay off monthly and avoid costly interest charges.

I recommend you get an RRSP loan with deferred payment privileges. I can arrange these at competitive rates and you don’t have to start repayments for 6 months by which time you should have received your tax refund.

Personal Tax Q A

When I have my house on the market for sale, is it okay to leave our personal photos such as wedding or graduation pictures on display?

It is important that you also do your RRSP contribution because you will reduce your current income taxes by 20 % to 45 % approximately of the amount you contribute. In addition to the tax deferment your contribution will be working to provide retirement income.
