Extreme makeover

It’s the public’s turn to view Cloverdale mall plans By Jennifer Lang It’s nearly the end of the line for the Cloverdale Mall. The outdated, virtually abandoned mall – long regarded by some as an eyesore – is being torn down to make way for new residential and commercial development, starting with a new home for the Cloverdale Legion – phase one of a larger revitalization and redevelopment plan now dubbed Cloverdale West Village. Branch 6 members and downtown businesses have known about the plan for months. Now, mere weeks before the old mall is torn down forever, it’s the public’s turn to see what developers have in store for the site. On Jan. 18, Cloverdale residents are invited to view redevelopment plans for the mall at an informal drop-in at the Cloverdale Legion (17567 57 Ave.) from 4 to 7 p.m.

Architects and designers will be on hand to answer questions. Comments and suggestions are welcome, says Jim Cox, president and CEO of Surrey City Development Corporation, one of the project’s proponents, along with TL Housing Solutions Ltd., and Townline Homes Inc. “My sense of the community and certainly the direction we’ve received from the mayor and council is that people want to see something happen,” he said. “It’s kind of a neighbourhood we’re creating.” There will be a lot of detail about phase one, which involves building a new home for the Cloverdale Legion on the ground floor of a building with residential units and commercial space. By Jennifer Lang Surrey’s newest school opened with a flourish Jan. 10, as students, staff and parents celebrated its opening day with balloons, music, coffee and refreshments in the gym – then toured the new building. It’s still so brand new the cupboards don’t have doors on them yet, the library is still being set up and the play field isn’t ready – but none of that mattered. “There was a lot of energy,” said Wendy Rachwalski, PAC president and parent of two of Adams Road Elementary’s 252 students. She’d worried her eldest son, now in Grade 7, would grow up without ever attending the East Cloverdale school. “To see the whole community walking to school” on Monday was a great feeling after waiting so many years, she said.

the younger grades on a tour that was so thorough it even included the janitor’s room – to rave reviews. Adams Road students and staff started the current school year in portables and classrooms at Don Christian Elementary, a school with 300-plus students of its own, making for a tight squeeze, Rachwalski said. Much of the move was completed over the Christmas holidays and during a final week in the old school. Rachwalski had strong praise for school staff for ensuring a smooth, seamless transition – and for being so enthusiastic. “They’re doing an amazing job to make it exciting for the kids,” she said. An official opening will take place later this year.

Will mall tenants be gone? ‘It is our plan to proceed with demolition Feb. 1’, Cloverdale Mall manager says By Jennifer Lang With demolition day imminent, the last two tenants of the Cloverdale Mall have promised to move out in time. The Cloverdale Sikh Society, which operates a temple that’s at the focus of community life for as many as 300 to 400 people, and a church-run soup kitchen that runs the extreme weather shelter for Cloverdale’s homeless, were granted three-month extensions in October. Both have promised to be out by Jan. 31, mall manager Ken Woodward of Surrey Realty Services said Monday. “Everybody else is out and we are proceeding with the demolition,” he said. Crews have begun dismantling the building, and demo-

lition is slated to start Feb. 1. “But that’s crossing my fingers that the [Sikh] society will be out,” he said. The aging mall, long past its prime, was recently home to a half-dozen tenants who were out by Oct. 31. Tenants leased

space for years while the future of the aging, dilapidated mall was up in the air. The final tenants included a long-time insurance company, a search and rescue group, a theatre company, Cloverdale Church, and several auction houses.

With a firm redevelopment plan finally in place this summer, three-month notices were issued back in August. But representatives from the Cloverdale Sikh Society asked the City of Surrey for an extension while a suitable new home with a kitchen and other facilities was sought. “Whether they are out by that date or whether they commence moving out by that date, we’ll have to see,” Woodward said. “It is our plan to proceed with demolition Feb. 1.” Once demolition does begin, it will be a months-long process because of the site’s existing infrastructure. “It’s not like a big ball and chain will come out Feb. 1,” he said.

SUSPECT IMAGES RELEASED Police have released photos of two suspects involved in a violent daytime robbery last month in Cloverdale. On Dec. 6, at about 12:50 p.m., two men entered a local pharmacy in the 5600-block of 177B Street and confronted two employees demanding “Oxycontins.” The employees were viciously assaulted and threatened with a knife before being forced to open the safe. One staff member was also locked outside the store during the robbery. After grabbing the contents of the safe, the two suspects then fled out the front door and Seen him? across a neighbouring school yard where they got into a waiting vehicle. They’re both described as Caucasian males in their 20s, standing 5’8” to 5’10”, wearing dark hooded sweat tops with hoods up, dark gloves, jeans, and running shoes. Suspect one entered the store first, and is of medium build, with bushy eyebrows, a square jawline and high hairline. The second suspect was slimmer and taller than the first, and was wearing a sweatshirt with two light gray or white horizontal stripes on each arm. To the very kind gentleman who changed the flat tire for me on my Ford Taurus on Wednesday afternoon Dec. 22, at 64 Avenue and 166 Street. I was a senior woman returning alone to my home in Burnaby when the front right tire went flat.

I pulled over to the side of the road, contemplating my choices. A young lad knocked on the window saying, “My dad saw your flat tire and will fix it for you.” This gentleman did indeed fix the tire! And, what a wonderful example of kindness to his three children who were also

Why aren’t you worried, Mr. Hiebert? Dear Russ Hiebert, I’d like to respond to your 2011 calendar (themed “Working Hard for You!”). In the calendar you say we are “blessed with great natural beauty, a prosperous economy and a peaceful society”. You seem to be taking these blessings for granted. For example, why did you vote on Dec. 7 and again Dec. 14 against private Member’s Bills to ban crude oil tanker traffic on Canada’s Pacific coast? Why is your party the only one not worried about an oil spill? With oil tankers now sailing out of Vancouver, couldn’t a catastrophic spill devastate White Rock and Crescent Beaches, causing permanent damage to the local economy as well as ecosystems and our quality of life?

Why do you believe we need not be concerned? Also this month, for the fourth consecutive year, Canada was given the Colossal Fossil Award for worst behaviour at the UN world leaders’ conference on Climate Change. This award recognizes the country most responsible for “delay, obstruction and total inaction”. Despite Canada’s efforts, 180 other countries agreed that “climate change represents an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies and the planet.” How is the Conservative government planning to address this threat to the coastal communities of White Rock and South Surrey, e.g., from the prospect of rising waters, extreme

weather or contaminated coastlines now that the Coast Guard has been downsized? Please also explain how Canada’s obstinate stance on climate change will help our international reputation. Will Canadians still be welcome abroad? Will we continue to enjoy “a peaceful society” here in Canada if we are seen by other nations as the most serious impediment to their children’s survival? If your government continues on this path, I wonder about your assertion that “our best years are still ahead of us.” I do hope you’re right, in spite of Canada’s recent record. Voted Surrey business person of the year in 2009, Chuck Keeling stepped down from his job as general manager of Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. In doing so, he severed the last remaining family connection to the historic harness racing facility, which was opened by his grandfather, Jim Keeling Sr., and a syndicate of investors, in 1976.

Political leaders showed a troubling lack of commitment to the future of harness racing in Cloverdale. In October, Mayor Dianne Watts revealed the City of Surrey was in talks to bring the Vancouver Whitecaps training facility to Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. It’s unclear whether the track, casino or rodeo would be part of a new soccer facility. Meanwhile, local MLA Kevin Falcon said he believes the harness racing track should go wherever it needs to in order to survive. But he wants the casino portion of Fraser Downs to stay where it is – in Cloverdale, a position that failed to quell concerns on the backstretch at Cloverdale’s historic harness racing facility.

Anthem Properties asked Surrey council to approve a major commercial development at the corner of Highway 10 and 15, a step closer to becoming a reality. Instead of retiring as planned, Sgt. Dave Woods moved over to Surrey RCMP headquarters after seven years as District Commander of the Port Kells/ Cloverdale District Office. The long-time Cloverdale Reporter columnist says he’ll be working with Chief Supt. Fraser MacRae. His replacement is Staff Sgt. Shirley Steele, who has extensive experience in community policing.

Cloverdale Mall tenants move out – mostly Time ran out for tenants of the old Cloverdale Mall, who were told to vacate by Oct. 31. The city-owned mall is being torn down to make way for

new residential and commercial development as part of Surrey’s long-term revitalization plans for Cloverdale’s town centre. It’s the end of the road for some tenants, like AAA Auction Ltd., located inside the former Safeway, the long-gone anchor store. An extension to Jan. 31 is granted to the Cloverdale Sikh Society, which operates a Gurdwara (temple) that’s at the centre of community life for as many as 300 people, and the Shepherd’s Inn soup kitchen. The mall will be demolished in February, with construction slated to begin early in the spring.

Last year, the BC SPCA rescued more than 10,000 stray cats and kittens. Only 900 were redeemed by their guardians, while the majority were adopted into new homes. By contrast, 65 per cent of dog guardians redeemed their animals. This startling difference is because few cat guardians bother to identify their cats so they can be returned if lost or make the effort to look for them when they go missing, assuming

that they will “show up” some time. In addition to the thousands of lost or abandoned cats who are turned into animals shelters in B.C. each year, thousands more fall victim to starvation, disease, predation and injury. This is a completely preventable tragedy. If your cat doesn’t already have identification I urge you to make it one of your

Baseball teams went to bat for cancer research with some very distinctivelooking equipment on Mother’s Day weekend 2010 – thanks in part to Cloverdale’s Ball Park Sports. Owner Merv Sandrel donated 48 pink baseball bats that were used for all Lower Mainland Baseball Association (LMBA) league games May 8 and 9. The games were part of a special fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society called Going to Bat for Cancer Research. All 32 teams were encouraged to collect donations from friends and family. The weekend was a roaring success raising a total of $6,354, a great job for the event in its first year.

Activist dies

Long time Surrey school trustee, family values activist and Dianne Watts politician Heather Stilwell died at the age of 66 following a battle with cancer. Stilwell served on Surrey’s board of education for 15 years, stepping down in 2008. She was a founding member of the Christian Heritage Party of Canada, and co-founded the Surrey Traditional School.

More money for horse racing

The province will inject more gambling profits into B.C.’s horse racing industry, upping the allocation to a $10 million fixed amount per year. The move will provide stability and certainty in terms of government support, according to a Dec. 10 letter from Derek Sturko, chair of the B.C. Horse Racing Industry Management Committee. Added up, the grant and wagering profits will bring $48 million in operating money in 2011. Financial reports show Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which owns Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino and Hastings Park in Vancouver, is on track to once again turn a profit at its two B.C. racetracks.
