Antique Mall shutting down Going-out-of-business sale coming up soon By Colin Oswin A Cloverdale antiquing institution will shut its doors for good next month. The Cloverdale Antique Mall in Clover Square Village is going out of business at the end of February. Business partner Tim Garrett says the Mall is closing due to an increase in rent. With operating costs outpacing sales, Garrett said a more expensive lease makes it impossible for the Mall to keep going. “A business like ours can’t afford to pay more,” he said. “Businesses like these are not making huge amounts of money.” Exact figures were not available, but Garrett said the monthly cost of a new lease was described to him as a “significant increase.” The Mall going out of business not only affects Garrett’s livelihood, but his employees, the 40 full-time antique dealers who run their businesses there and over 300 individuals who use the Mall’s consignment service. Bill Reid, Executive Director of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, said the Mall is one of Cloverdale’s biggest attractions, and it brings in shoppers from across the Lower Mainland. He described the Mall’s imminent closure as a sad state

of affairs. “It’s an incredible asset,” he said. “It’s been a tourist attraction for 12 years.” In the past, Cloverdale was home to more than a dozen antique dealers. After the Cloverdale Antique Mall and Red Barn Antiques – another Cloverdale institution in the process of shutting down – both close up shop only two dealers will remain. Reid said the Mall gave the dealers that went out of business another chance, but that is coming to an end. “They created an opportunity for them to stay in business,” he said. For the immediate future, Garrett says he will be putting together a major sale to clear out all of his inventory. Details on the sale have not been finalized, but he said more information will be released shortly. Looking farther ahead, Garrett doesn’t have any easy answers. He’s not sure what he will do after the Mall closes. “I’ve had my head in this for so long, I can’t give any thought to what my head will look like without it,” he said. The Cloverdale Antique Mall would have marked its 12th anniversary on March 1.

City ponders online voting By Kevin Diakiw Before long, voting for your choice of mayor and city councillors could be a matter of walking to your computer – or phone – and selecting your favourite candidates. Electronic voting is under consideration by Surrey council, which debated the issue on Monday.

Mayor Dianne Watts favours the idea, but she wants to ensure it won’t be subject to abuse. She says the advantages of such a system could be substantial, among them an increase in voter participation, ease of taking part in the vote, and environmental benefits, as people won’t be driving to polling places.

Under the system, registered voters would be mailed a PIN (personal identification number) which they would use to log in to a website or identify themselves on the phone. The system would not be ready for this November’s election, Watts said, because it requires provincial approval first,

returning B.C. champ, Kelowna’s Kelly Scott, and 2002 Olympic bronze-medallist Kelley Law of New Westminster have set a high bar, but the other rinks have risen to the challenge. She singles out Prince George’s Team Fewster, the youngest rink at the B.C. Scotties, as an excellent new team. A much-anticipated rematch of last year’s final on Tuesday ended suddenly in the eighth end. Law made a hit for five and a 9-3 lead over Scott, prompting the defending B.C. champion to shake hands and accept her first loss at the 2011 Scotties. Both Law and Scott had opened the tournament with two wins Monday, and along with Roselyn Craig of Duncan, were the lone unbeaten teams after the first day of play. Law never trailed, and broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three in the fifth end. Scott stole one in the seventh to cut the gap to 4-3, but she came up short on her two shots in the eighth end, opening the door for Law to blow the game open. Craig joined Law atop the standings with 3-0 (won-lost) records after the third draw Tuesday, as she defeated Karla Thompson of Kamloops 10-4, clinching the victory by posting four in the eighth end to bring the contest to a halt. Kristy Lewis of Richmond moved into a third place tie with Scott at 2-1, drawing for two in the ninth and a 6-4 lead over Patti Knezevic, then running the Prince George curler out of rocks in the 10th. Russell says the tournament will shine a light on the Cloverdale Curling Club in the community as a great source of entertainment and exercise, and she hopes the attention will provide a boost to membership levels. “This is definitely a feather in the cap of the Cloverdale Curling Club,” she said. By Colin Oswin B.C.’s best female curlers have hit the ice in Cloverdale. The Scotties B.C. Women’s Curling Championship roared out of the gate on Monday, with 10 teams from across the province joining the competition at the Cloverdale Curling Club. The teams are playing for the right to represent B.C. at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts – Canada’s national curling championships – next month in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Round-robin play wraps up this morning, with the final draw at 9:30, and the playoffs kick off this evening at 7 p.m. The final will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. Host committee chair Sherry Russell says curling fans and team boosters have come out in force, with large groups of spectators even for the first match of the tournament. “The crowds were incredible,” she said, “way more than we would have expected for an early-Monday-morning game.” She expects the number of spectators to grow even larger for the playoffs this weekend. Another impressive behind-the-scenes element is the level of community support for the tournament. Russell says organizers put the call out for volunteer assistance and they were flooded with requests to sign up. “We were overwhelmed by the number of volunteers that stepped up for this event,” she said. On the ice, the competition so far has been fierce. Russell says the presence of

Haiti – pause for thought

For the people of Haiti, there is little hope to cling to. It’s been one year since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake brought this nation to its knees. Billions of dollars have been pledged to help the country get back on its feet, but by all accounts, the country still can’t get a foothold. From Haiti’s grim choleraridden streets, we in Cloverdale should have a new appreciation for what we have, especially for the basics of food, water, shelter, health care and well-run government. One leader of a non-profit organization said last week that working in Haiti is simply a “humbling experience.” Reconstruction of the country is moving in slow motion. Haiti’s centralized government has hampered efforts of local authorities. Only five per cent of the rubble in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince has been cleared since the earthquake, a troubling statistic illustrating little progress has been made. Haiti was already a nation on

the brink of disaster before the earthquake hit. According to Canadian officials, 85 per cent of its citizens lived in abject poverty before the quake. Only one in five had access to clean water. After the earth shook, 30 hospi-

tals were destroyed. Three out of four medical schools were levelled, as was the nation’s largest nursing hospital. Haitians training at these facilities were killed. Add hurricanes, disease and political instability to the mix,

and the devastation is worse than most war zones. Meanwhile, many of us Canadians go about our daily lives and find plenty to complain about. Some Haitians lost entire families in the quake and have little to live for. One relief worker is quoted as saying that people can’t stop themselves from crying. “They’re not functioning properly,” she said. One million people are homeless or in camps. Sexual violence is rampant. According to one report, police officers are asking rape victims to pay gas money if they want their cases investigated. Perpetrators are rarely caught, rarely prosecuted. There are stories of progress, but they’re coming at a glacial pace. Yet there are enough glimmers of hope that the Haitian people haven’t given up on their nation. It’s a sombre situation that offers us plenty of reasons to pause and be grateful for what we have in Canada.

Drunk driver nabbed ICE-SCRAPING FAILURE

When you’ve had so much booze you can’t handle scraping ice off a vehicle, you are definitely too drunk to drive, as one man found out in Fort Langley on Jan. 8 A local resident who saw the drunken attempt at clearing the windshield of a white van phoned police around 9:30 p.m. While officers were en route, the driver got in the van, hit the gas, fishtailed and promptly collided with a tree. Local residents pulled him out and attended to his injuries, which were not life-threatening. A 37-year-old Surrey man is facing impaired driving charges. The van turned out to be stolen.

MP reaches out, calls 25,000 constituents By Tracy Holmes Twenty-five thousand South Surrey, White Rock and Cloverdale residents received a phone call from MP Russ Hiebert on Monday. The telephone town hall – held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. – was touted by the area’s MP as the first of its kind in Canada, “a really neat way to encourage participation in democracy.” Many weeks in the making, it was also a chance for participants to speak directly with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. “I haven’t heard of any other Member of Parliament using this technology, although it may have happened,” Hiebert said Monday, hours before making the call-out. One man who dialed in about 10 minutes into the conversation described the endeavour as a useful exercise. Bill Taylor said questions to the politicians were on issues ranging from taxation and job creation to why government is spending money on defence equipment as opposed to social programs. All questions were directed at Flaherty, noted Taylor, a White Rock resident who volunteers at Hiebert’s South Surrey office. Given his involvement with the constituency board, Taylor said he chose to listen rather than pose questions himself. Not everyone was happy about

the unsolicited interruption to their dinner-hour, but Taylor said those he heard on the line appreciated the opportunity the telephone meeting provided. “They may not have agreed with everything, but they were very pleased with the opportunity.” The town hall aimed to seek constituents’ input on the upcoming federal budget, as well as hear suggestions for ways to do things better. Questions were to be asked and answered “live, uncensored, unedited.” Hiebert acknowledged prior to the meeting that not everyone would be able to speak. “We only have 60 minutes. There’s a limited number of questions that can be asked,” he told Black Press, noting constituents who stayed on the line would be able to participate in various surveys. Hiebert did not return calls after the event by press deadline, however in a news release on Tuesday morning, he described input from the town hall as “invaluable as we work to produce our government’s next budget.” More specific results of the meeting, including how many people opted to get involved in the conversation, were not provided. Prior to the event, Hiebert estimated the cost of Monday’s call at “in the pennies” per person. – Peace Arch News

Hydro smart meters coming this year By Tom Fletcher BC Hydro is getting ready to install “smart meters” across the province that will tell customers how much electricity they’re using at different times of the day. But unlike Ontario’s smart meters, the B.C. program will not immediately come with mandatory higher rates for peak period use and lower rates for non-peak times such as late at

night. In its business case for the new meters, released Tuesday, BC Hydro says customers will be offered an opportunity to choose “time of use” rates if they want them. BC Hydro estimates that the smart meter program will produce a net savings of $500 million over the next 20 years, through improved reliability and efficiency as well as conservation of energy.

home. Built in the late 1800s, the old stone house sported endless brass doorknobs, cavernous plant pots, and barleycorn candlesticks sufficient for a state dinner. My reflection twinkles in the newly polished Ursula Maxwell-Lewis brass rose bowl. I picture the family gathered before the fireplace in my grandmother’s sitting room. The Rev. Alpine “Alpie” McAlpine, mother’s cousin, ready to christen me realizes there’s no Christening bowl. Mother, too weak to attend, knows the doctor has already advised the Munros I am too ill to survive. Isa, mother’s elder sister, dashes across the snowy February street to return with her brass rose bowl. Alpie now proceeds with the ritual. Between prayers, blessings, and my infirm grandmother’s unshakable faith and ministrations, the medical prognosis proved wrong. “I’ve raised 11 children and not lost one yet. I don’t intend to lose this one!” she informed the doctors firmly. Three decades later my three Canadian children were christened from the same rose bowl in Alberta and California. The girls wore my tiny lace christening gown. I pause to mop up tears. My beloved younger cousin, Alison, was christened in the same gown, and from the same bowl. Cancer claimed her two years ago. Next the warming pan with the long turned oak handle, and the engraving of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Maids in the 1800s filled the

Thankfully the breastplates vanished with the ancient Romans. Aladdin-like, the polishing produces an elusive djinni who subliminally returns me to my fellow polishers – mother and the now-absent Munro women. Of course, as a Scottish child who shared a room with an Inverness ghost, I can be persuaded to believe anything. Ursula Maxwell-Lewis is the former publisher and editor of the Cloverdale Reporter. Among the candlesticks is a lead-weighted one mother purchased for five shillings in London in the 1920s. She said it took her hours to clean. Thanks, Welcome Wagon The year 2010 marked a milestone for Welcome Wagon, the folks who give you a friendly welcome when you’re new to town, just had a baby, or are marking a new phase of life like retirement. Last year was Welcome Wagon’s 80th anniversary. From March to June, celebrations were held across Canada, including an annual regional convention in Langley, where outstanding representatives were honoured. Ina Vandeburgt has

been Welcome Wagon’s Cloverdale representative for more than 20 years, welcoming newcomers and new businesses to the Cloverdale area. Over her career, she’s been honoured three times with the National Award for Outstanding Representative. These awards provide a $1,500 donation to a charitable community. One was given to a youth retreat organization, another to the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce

as seed money for new signage in Cloverdale. And last year, the donation was presented to the Cloverdale Seniors Centre. The money was used to keep the Spice of Life program continuing. “I feel privileged and blessed to be able to ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’ she says. Welcome Wagon has a lot to celebrate. Welcome Wagon Ltd. separated from Welcome Wagon International in 1979, becoming a wholly Canadian company. There are more than 1,000 representatives nation-wide, working within their communities. Together they represent more than 13,000 businesses, and visit more than 300,000 families each year.

Your property is worth only as much as a buyer is willing to pay. Armed with access to sales statistics and neighbourhood information, today’s home buyer is knowledgeable and sophisticated. Your key marketing period will be the first few weeks your home comes on the market. Pricing your home too high during this period could result in a lower final selling price than may been initially obtained.

The Brickyard Station shopping centre, planned for this vacant lot on the corner of Highway 10 and the Cloverdale bypass, has moved to fourth reading at the City of Surrey.

Heritage rail retail plaza moves ahead

By Jennifer Lang A heritage rail-themed shopping centre planned for the sizable vacant lot on the northwest corner of Highway 10 and the Cloverdale bypass is a step closer to becoming reality. A representative from Anthem Properties Ltd. has confirmed its “Brickyard Station” proposal is proceeding through the approval process at city hall. The development permit and rezoning application is headed to fourth reading. If approved, construction could begin in two to three months, said Rob Blackwell, vice-president of commercial development for Anthem. “We’d like to start construction in late spring,” he said. For now, the company is only developing the commercial half of the 10-acre property. Anthem’s long-term plans also call for an industrial/business park on the site, a former industrial works yard. “The market currently doesn’t support the industrial/ business park side going forward yet,” Blackwell said. Meanwhile, the company is excited about moving forward with Brickyard Station, a name that takes its cue from the design plans. The buildings will feature a lot of brick, with large canopies that are conducive to restaurants, and other features chosen to create a heritage rail theme. “We have all these little touchstones of heritage and railway,” Blackwell said, adding the architectural design and site landscaping will be “definitely memorable and linked to the history.” Anchor tenants are expected to include CIBC, Staples and Rexall Drugs, along with smaller tenants COBS Bread and Kin’s Farm Market. While Blackwell would not elaborate or confirm, he did add that “Our expectation would be to have some funkier tenants. It’s been our focus to bring some new tenants to Cloverdale.”

New DUI penalties working: RCMP Police caught 43 per cent fewer drinking drivers in the second half of the December Counterattack campaign in the Lower Mainland. And RCMP Traffic Services Supt. Norm Gaumont is crediting the province’s tougher roadside penalties for dissuading motorists who’ve consumed alcohol from getting behind the wheel. “That’s a marked decrease,”

he said. “What we’re hearing from our members on the road is a lot of people are now talking about this and have designated drivers.” A total of 427 drivers stopped by police were given prohibitions, suspensions or were charged for impaired driving in the Lower Mainland during the December Counterattack period. – Jeff Nagel

I do a lot of homemade movies and consequently need a big hard drive. Well as they say it’s better to be safe than sorry! The WD 3 Terabyte hard drive is your answer. (You can’t get a bigger hard drive) Can I put 2 hard drives into my laptop? There are some wider laptops that come with 2 hard drives side by side. Unfortunately most don’t. Desktops can handle more than two hard drives internally. You can have as many hard drives as you like for your laptop as long as they are external through your USB ports. My computer has been so slow working since it was new. What is the operating system? Vista Upgrade to 7 and your nightmare will end.

Q

I have had back pain for 2 months. My G.P. has referred me to physiotherapy for an exercise program. Will this help?

A

It is important to identify the structures involved that are causing the pain. I can presume that you have had the necessary x-rays/scans and that your G.P has concluded that your back pain is of musculoskeletal origin. A customized exercise program is focused on regaining muscle balance, improving core stability, strength and flexibility. Postural education and correction is of vital importance to achieve a successful outcome. The deep muscles of the back and stomach are known as the core stabilizing muscles. The core muscle are endurance type muscles which function at a low percentage of maximum for long periods of time. They serve to stabilize your back in the midline position thereby decreasing the stress on the back. The core muscles are activated in different postures namely sitting, lifting, pulling, carrying and in many other work related activities. The exercise program should be gradual but progressive in nature. The ultimate goal of a physiotherapy/rehabilitation program is to decrease pain, improve functional ability and prevent recurrence of back pain.

I send resume after resume but I can’t get an interview. What am I doing wrong? Here are three of the more common issues and the fixes: 1) Your resume is not showcasing your skills and experience they way it should. Call us to create a professional resume for you. Have that resume stand out amongst all the others. There is a cost involved, but what is the cost to you of not getting the interview? 2) You are applying to jobs you really are not qualified for. This is the biggest one, I see it every day. I can not tell you how frustrated my applicant screeners get over people sending in resumes for jobs that they have no business applying to. You are not doing yourself any favours. We are sure many of you can do the job one day, that you are a quick learner, but employers want someone to come in and hit the ground running. Please make sure you really have the listed requirements for the role. 3) The people that display constant growth and learning about their chosen profession are getting the interview ahead of you. It may be time to upgrade your skills. Hang tight, there is a great job for everyone out there. Yours will come.
