Young inventor honoured at Tweedsmuir
By Colin Oswin A Lord Tweedsmuir student’s innovative idea has provided a big boost for her university education. Grade 12 student Sarah Gordon learned last week that she had won the secondary school’s Idea MashUp contest, earning a $2,000 scholarship for her first year of university. The Idea MashUp, administered by the B.C. Innovation Council (BCIC), challenged high school students to create an invention that combines two or more pieces of technology that already exist in order to solve a problem. The contestants don’t actually have to build the device, but they do have to create a
solid, practical theory and demonstrate its possible uses. Gordon’s idea was to combine barcode scanners, bluetooth headsets, tiny portable cameras and voice recognition software to create a household information database to aid people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. With household objects branded with barcodes, the user could aim the bluetooth earpiece (with a camera mounted on top) at anything causing confusion. The user issues a voice command, the bluetooth headset relays it to a nearby computer, and the computer responds with information on the object from its bar code database.

“It’s extremely far-fetched, but all the technology has been produced,” Gordon said. “It’s just a matter of production.” Depending on the voice command, the computer could release a range of information on household objects, ranging from basic functions up to personal anecdotes based on a particular device. Gordon came up with the idea after volunteering at the Zion Park Manor residential care facility and working with seniors suffering with Alzheimer’s. See INSPIRATION STRUCK / Page 3

can also help newcomers become more involved, giving them a stake in the community and inspiring them to help out, she said. “Museums should be the common man’s cultural bridge to the community,” she said. Free admission was made possible this year via income generated through the Museum’s Endowment Fund as well as donations from businesses, service clubs and individuals in the community. In 2010, admission charges were $5.50 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, $2.75 for children and youth, and free for children under five. Admission to the museum will be free for the whole year, and the society hopes to extend the discount into the future. Donations will still be accepted at the door, and the community can continue to support the Friends Society by purchasing the new Surrey Museum Heritage Blend Tea at the China Cup Tea Company in Cloverdale.

By Colin Oswin Surrey’s history will be free for the taking this year. Ahead of the launch of its 2011 season, the Surrey Museum wants to remind residents in the area that admission to the facility will be completely free for the entire year. The year will begin with exhibits on Graduation Through the Ages, which tracks the changes surrounding the ritual of leaving high school over the past 100 years, as well as an exploration of India’s Bhangra music. Both exhibits open on Feb. 8. Ursula Maxwell-Lewis, Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society President and former editor and publisher of the Cloverdale Reporter, says offering free admission felt like the right thing to do for the community. She adds that the initiative will make it more comfortable for people to drop in and explore the city’s history. “Surrey has a great history, and this is one avenue to allow us to tell it,” she said.

Rhetorical Questions Last week, my students asked me what a rhetorical question is. I explained that a rhetorical question is one that requires no answer because the answer is so obvious. Sometimes when we use rhetorical questions, the obvious answer – even when left unspoken – becomes part of our speech or argument. “Let me give you an example,” I said … but with 23 eager-to-learn students sitting in front of me, do you think I could come up with even one example of a rhetorical question? The Bible is full of rhetorical questions. Here are a few to which the answer is an obvious “No!” God speaks to Job (and to us), asking: Were you there when I laid the earth’s foundation? Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons? Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? In the book of Romans, in talking about God’s wisdom and knowledge, the apostle Paul asks a few questions to which we must answer “No one!” Who has known the mind of the LORD? Who can be God’s advisor? Who can counsel him? Who can repay what he has given us? And here’s a question that may not be rhetorical, but to which I hope you’ll answer “Yes.” Do you want to know more about this amazing God? Join us for worship next Sunday; we’d love to share the Good News.

What about accountability? Former cabinet minister Kash Heed doesn’t need any help ruining his character, according to this letter writer To the editor; Re: “Heeding the call of RCMP review,” Jan. 28, 2011 This is in response to your article of January 28, 2011. It mentions that Kash Heed deserves credit for drawing attention to the current negotiations between the province and government and the RCMP for a new 20 year contract. I would say that the only thing that Mr. Heed is doing is trying to deflect the attention from himself and his lack of credibility! The article also mentions Mr. Heed calling for more accountability for the RCMP in regards to the Missing Women’s Case! So let’s look at a few facts. Were not the missing women all reported missing from the downtown east
side of Vancouver, thus making the Vancouver Police the lead investigators in the cases? Did the Vancouver Police not treat them as just drug addicted prostitutes? Was Mr. Heed not a high-ranking officer with the Vancouver Police at the time? What about accountability here, Mr. Heed? Why would Coquitlam or Surrey or Burnaby RCMP be acting as lead investigators on Vancouver’s missing person’s cases? The same reason Vancouver Police do not investigate other jurisdictions cases: it was their responsibility – which in this case failed miserably. Mr. Heed left Vancouver to be-
come chief of the West Vancouver Police, where it is said (as reported in the news) he ran into trouble with the mayor by interfering in investigations. Mr. Heed is now embroiled in controversy over his election practices: over-spending and the unauthorized campaign pamphlets and practices. Mr. Heed alleges that a police probe into his conduct is an attempt at character assassination by the RCMP. I do not think Mr. Heed needs any help in ruining his character. He is doing a great job on his own! With Mr. Heed it always seems that it is someone else’s fault and

that he knows nothing about anything that happens to him. Yes, the RCMP made a big mistake in regards to the death of Robert Dziekanski, but would a regional force change anything but the uniform and the cost? Take a look at the track record of all other forces in the area. They all have been in the news lately. The only thing that would change is who and where the power is. Would you want Mr. Heed in charge of that power given his track record? I would suggest that Mr. Heed clean up his own backyard first. Thank you, J. Edwards Cloverdale

Senior turns 100 and still lives on her own
Neighbours throw a birthday bash for Cloverdale’s Sally Crowe Contributed by Angela and Peter Nash Residents of Carriage House condominiums in Cloverdale had a lot to celebrate early last month when they gathered for their annual post-holiday Christmas dinner – and a special birthday bash for Sally Crowe, who’s lived there for more than 20 years. Crowe turned 100 on Jan. 4, 2011. Four days later, her neighbours turned out for a delicious turkey and ham dinner followed by birthday cake and a toast to the centenarian. Sally, who still lives alone in her condominium, has led a very eventful life. Born in Dilke, Saskatchewan to homesteaders Eric and Bertha Josvanger, Sally was the third child of seven children. She was active in many church and social functions, and was a heck of a basketball player. In her early teens, she fell ill with rheumatic fever and wasn’t expected to pull through. But she was back on her feet after six months of bed rest. Unfortunately, her dreams of becoming a nurse were shattered – nursing schools would not accept her for training because of potential heart problems as a result of her illness. Sally managed to prove those professionals wrong. She met her husband Art Crowe in Regina, where he was a bank manager. When he moved to Vancouver, Sally followed, and they were married and her daughter Donna was born. Sally enjoyed traveling with frequent trips to visit friends and family in Alberta and Saskatchewan and many winters in Hawaii. Art passed away from cancer in 1977, and Sally moved to Cloverdale.

Among her many accomplishments, Sally Crowe was also a heck of a basketball player in her younger days.

Parents, students descend on school for Literacy Day Port Kells Elementary School takes a team approach to learning By Colin Oswin Port Kells Elementary had a packed house last week, as parents joined students for some old fashioned book learnin’. Port Kells joined with schools cross the country on Jan. 27 to celebrate Family Literacy Day. Parents were invited to join their children for a morning session to promote the importance of reading. Of the school’s 80 families, 45 parents, guardians, preschoolaged siblings and even grandparents came out for the event. Dean Yeo, principal at Port Kells Elementary, says the parents had an enjoyable time and they appreciated the opportunity to come in and join their children at school. “The parents who came were quite happy when they left,” he said. “They thought it was great.” Literacy Day kicked off in the gym, with local public librarian Judi Bell on hand for some story time reading, followed by a description of the activities and services offered at the library. After the gym session, parents
joined the students in class for literacy activities and one-on-one reading time. Children with parents who were unavailable were paired up with older students acting as sort of literacy mentors for the younger kids. Yeo said bringing the parents to the school was part of an effort to boost their involvement
“The hope is you build on it, it takes over and it becomes part of their routine.” - Dean Yeo with their child’s education, describing it as a team approach to learning. Reading with children at home helps to develop their literacy skills and gives them a leg up in school. Yeo said this is especially important with young children. Helping them learn the letters and letter sounds at an early age gets them ready for school – and that sets
the stage for better performance in school. “The whole point is to promote literacy – reading and writing in the home,” he said. For parents who missed the event, or those looking to extend Literacy Day’s themes at home, Yeo recommends joining your child in the school’s reading log program, which monitors the amount of time each student spends reading at home. Yeo says participating with a child and reading along will continue the process of developing literacy skills. “The hope is that you build on it, it takes over and it becomes part of their routine,” he said.” As a bonus to Port Kells students, Yeo has added an incentive to the to the reading log program: if the logs for the school’s 110 students add up to 100,000 minutes spent reading at home this year, one primary and one intermediate student will be randomly selected to throw a pie at the principal’s face during a yearend assembly. Who says reading isn’t cool?

MALL DEMO BEGINS The walls are coming down. Ken Woodward of Surrey Realty Services said he planned to be on site – lawn chair and tripod in hand – to watch crews demolish the exterior of the old Cloverdale Mall, slated for redevelopment. Crews have been removing drywall, concrete and other material in preparation for tearing the
city-owned structure itself down, and began trucking materials to recycling facilities this week. Meanwhile, all of the mall’s former tenants – including the Cloverdale Sikh Society and the Shepherd’s Inn Soup Kitchen, who were both given compassionate extensions to Jan. 31 – have moved out. Demolition crews are now “proceeding very quickly,” he said.

Off to the races By Jennifer Lang Three local harness racing drivers are representing British Columbia at the upcoming 2011 Western Regional Driving Championship, taking place on their home track at Fraser Downs later this month. Jim Marino, Dave Hudon, and Michael Hennessy have now been confirmed to take on the top three competitors from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba at the Feb. 26 championships, the racetrack and casino has announced. Top drivers in terms of standings at Fraser Downs as of Jan. 23 determined who would be heading to the regionals, which are a precursor to the National Driving Championship
competition in May. Fraser Downs’ seemingly unstoppable Ed Hensley – who once again leads this season’s local driver standings – is not eligible for the national cup because he’s American. Other leading Fraser Downs drivers Keith Clark, Gerry Hudon and Brandon Campbell, are competing at the Western Regional Driving Championship – representing Alberta. The top two drivers from the western competition will join drivers from the Atlantic region at the 2011 National Driving Championship at Red Shores in Prince Edward Island May 7. The winner will represent Canada at the World Driving Championship in New York state this summer.
SLT’s ‘Splinters’ pays big dividends A local little theatre group has made a big donation to the Surrey Food bank – thanks to help from its original holiday production, Splinters. Written and directed by Surrey Little Theatre youth member Elyse Maloway, Splinters featured a talented cast and crew of 18 young people. Their efforts meant the SLT was able to kick off the new year with a $1,019 donation to the Surrey Food bank. Meanwhile, Surrey Little Theatre is set to open its first musical in a long time – You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The play – based on the popular characters in the “Peanuts” comic strip by the late Charles M. Schultz – runs Feb. 3 to 26 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, plus Sunday afternoon matinees at 2 p.m. All tickets $15. Reservations by calling 604-576-8451 or by email at reservations@surreylittletheatre.com.

Q
In order to make it easier to complete my personal tax return, how should I organize my tax information?
A
It is important to effectively organize your tax information if you want to minimize the time and effort that it takes to complete your tax filing. Unfortunately, there are often many things to consider when you are completing the return. Some items, like tax slips such as T4’s, T3’s, T5’s and RRSP contribution slips are relatively easy to obtain and file. However, documentation in support of dispositions of stocks and bonds, childcare expenses, employment expenses, interest on loans, tuition fees, medical expenses, charitable donations as well as business/rental income and expenses are more difficult to put together. If your filing has anything more complex than several tax slips, I would strongly suggest that you start gathering your tax information as soon as possible. To assist you in this process, I have a short tax information checklist and I would be happy to send it to you upon request. For help with filing your personal taxes, please contact me at your convenience.

ROBERT PETRIE, C.F.P. Serving the area for 24 years
Why should I consider Taekwondo for my children or myself? Most people think of Taekwondo just being about kicking, punching and self-defense. While self-defense is definitely one aspect of a good Martial Arts program there are other important benefits. In society today, two big problems are obesity and decline in discipline and focus. The physical training in Taekwondo is something that everyone can handle resulting in increased strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy we frequently hear that our students are at the top of their class in physical fitness. Our Taekwondo school has structure and discipline where values like courtesy, respect, honour and loyalty are talked about and expected. As instructors, we are very proud of our students. They go out of their way to help others and get comments on how courteous and respectful they are. Next month one of our adult students will receive an award for bravery after putting his own life in danger to save a stranger, an act he states he might not have considered prior to his training in Taekwondo. The question should really be, “Why shouldn’t I give my child and myself the value, benefit and success that result from training in Taekwondo”.
I invest inside my RRSP or outside in Q Should investments which would provide capital gains taxable at a reduced rate?

Q
I do not want to use drugs for my sex life. Is there a natural alternative I can try?
A
Herbs like Horny Goat Weed, Damiana, Deer Antler Velvet, Tribulus Terrestis, Avena Sativa, Panax Ginseng, and Maca have aphrodisiac effects. Male-X-Boost® (Douglas Lab) contains all these herbs and is used as a booster. Side effects are rare but people with medical conditions or prostate problems should only try homeopathic mixtures like our “HOAPLE Complex” which may help to condition sex hormones. These natural products can also be used on dogs, cats and horses for breeding purposes.

How important is tire maintenance?
According to the research done by BCAA the four points where the rubber meets the road are all that stands between you and an accident. A tire that is under inflated decreases fuel economy, causes premature wear and improper handling. An overinflated tire can prematurely wear the center tread, and cause a rough ride. In wet and snowy weather having good tires with enough tread depth is critical. A worn out tire with poor tread is likely to hydroplane and lose traction on wet pavement resulting in a loss of steering and braking ability. Check you tire pressure monthly, normally when the tire is cold. Check your owner’s manual for proper inflation pressures or the information label located on on the inside door jam of your vehicle. Improper tire maintenance shortens the life of your tires and is more costly in the long g run.

The key is how you use the tax refund or reduced tax payments that result from your RRSP contributions. For example, if you use your tax refund for personal financial expenditures - say, to take a vacation - the benefits of your RRSP contributions are significantly reduced. Repay a mortgage or other personal debt that reduces your non-deductible interest expenses and increase your personal wealth, and it’s a different story. You can enjoy the benefit of more disposable income that can be used for investment or to further reduce your debt. Keep in mind that the number of years to your retirement, maintaining an asset allocation strategy that fits your risk profile, your overall tax strategy, and the growing amount of your personal wealth all impact your investment strategy I can perform a customized analysis of all these factors and assist in determining what’s best for you.

Q
Does my tax assessment reflect what my property will sell for if I put it on the market?
A
No. Your tax assessment does not necessarily reflect the market value of your home. When the city establishes house values for property tax purposes, it is done by averaging the sale prices of the homes within a few blocks. If one sale is particularly high, it could increase the average of all the houses in the area, even if the other houses offer less value. For the city to assess each home individually with a visual inspection would be too costly for the tax payers, thus being the reason the averaging method was adopted. Ultimately the buyer will determine the market value for your home. At the end of the day, whatever a buyer is willing to pay is what the home is worth.

Worldly winter games a hit with Jr. curlers
Contributed Four of Surrey’s junior curlers, brothers Jordan and Tyler Tardi and Brad and Rhett Hildenbrandt – all from Cloverdale – joined more than 600 international athletes, attending the International Children’s Games this past week. The International Children’s Winter Games were held from January 26-31, 2011 in Kelowna, B.C. Kelowna hosted international youth aged 12 to 15 for a week of fun-filled games, sporting events, festivals and more. The event put emphasis on sporting ideals, respect, and understanding different cultures and ways of thinking. The aim of the Games was not to win but to create strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between young athletes from all over the world. The two sets of brothers, who had never competed together prior to this event, proudly represented Surrey, making their

way to the medal round after finishing the round-robin with a record of 3 and 1. They came in fourth, losing to the Korean team in the semi-final event, who went on to take the gold medal. The boys had the opportunity to meet other athletes from around the world. Thirty-nine cities from 15 countries were represented at the games.
This was only the fifth time that the winter games were held and the first time that they were held in North America. It was an experience of a lifetime and the Surrey kids all agreed that the week’s highlight was playing the team from Korea. cussions about future services to the city. “We will operate our own facility focusing on our core SPCA mandate of animal protection and cruelty prevention, but are certainly open to assisting the city in other ways if
they wish,” Daniell said, adding programs will be designed to avoid duplication of services. “While the city’s mandate focuses on stray animals and animal-control issues, we will offer our core services of animal protection, sheltering, advocacy and education.” The services and programs
that will be offered at the BC SPCA’s new centre are still being determined. The society envisions a unique, community-friendly complex where the public can view animals for adoption, volunteer, attend education and training sessions on pet behavior, participate in animal-
related events and get involved in advocacy campaigns. Ideas being explored include a farmers market or retail area for local meat, poultry and dairy products. The new site is hoped to be operational in early 2012. – Black Press
