Robbery suspects still sought after Armed robbery took place in broad daylight By Jennifer Lang Surrey RCMP are still seeking the public’s help in solving a particularly brazen crime that took place at a local pharmacy in downtown Cloverdale in early December. At 12:51 p.m. on Dec. 6, two suspects confronted two employees at the pharmacy in the 5600 block of 177B Street, demanding “Oxycontins”. Both employees were viciously assaulted and threatened with a knife during the robbery, before being forced to open the safe. After grabbing the contents of the safe, the suspects fled out the front door, across the neighbouring school yard and hopped into a waiting vehicle. One staff member was locked outside while the crime took place. One suspect – the one who entered the store first – is described as of medium build, with bushy eyebrows, square jawline and a high hairline. Suspect two has a slimmer build, is taller than the first suspect, and had two light gray/ white horizontal strips on each arm of his sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP robbery section at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if you with to remain anonymous.

RISKY BUSINESS? The Surrey RCMP’s latest Business

Link newsletter for Cloverdale and Port Kells businesses offers tips on reducing the risk of being targeted by property crime and theft – and how to deal with a robbery if it happens. The reality is all businesses are a potential target for thieves wanting cash, drugs or goods, says the newsletter, written by crime prevention programs coordinator Carrie Chattell. Suggestions for reducing the risk include adhering to sound business practices, ensuring the premises have good visibility, proper lighting and are equipped with an alarm system. Employee training is also recommended; it’s important for businesses to provide employees with information on what to do to minimize the impact of a robbery. Police recommend remaining calm, not making sudden moves, complying with demands and not arguing with robbers. Never assume the robber isn’t armed. Try to pay close attention to what the robber looks like (but don’t stare). Only activate a panic alarm when it’s safe to do so, and don’t be a hero. After the robber leaves, lock the door, try to observe the direction of travel of the suspect and/or getaway vehicle, and dial 9-1-1. Free height strips are available to all businesses to help owners and their employees identify suspects of crime. – Cloverdale Reporter

B.C. Liberal delegates voted overwhelmingly last weekend to change their voting system, giving rural regions equal say with urban populations in selecting their next party leader and premier. With all the leadership candidates in favour of the weighted voting system, delegates in Vancouver and at eight regional forums Feb. 12 easily reached the two-thirds majority required to make the change. The final count was 1,319 party delegates in favour of the change and only 23 opposed. The new system was recommended by the B.C. liberal executive last fall, after Premier Gordon Campbell announced he is stepping down. It will assign 100 points to each of the 85 constituency associations, to be divided proportionally when party members pick a new leader Feb. 26. The weighted vote ensures a constituency with only 100 members has the same clout in leadership choice as one with 1,000 members.

There were just two reports of robberies, and nine incidents involving credit or debit cart fraud. Police also recorded 137 false alarms in the district during the first month of the year.

Just a matter of time

When the big one comes – and it’s coming – will you and your family be prepared? According to Earthquakes Canada, in the last month, between Dec. 29 and Jan. 28, southwest British Columbia had 79 earthquakes. Six of those occurred within regions measured from Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. OK, so you didn’t feel any of them. Most of those little tremours were less than a magnitude of 3.0. But while they may be out of sight and out of mind, the constant jiggling of B.C.’s natural ground forces is good reason to get ready for when the shiver becomes a serious grinder. British Columbia clearly leads the way in having the most and the biggest earthquakes in the nation. According to Natural Resources Canada, about 5,000 earthquakes are recorded in Canada each year and of the top 10 earthquakes nationally, six have happened in this prov-

6,000 years, about one in every 400 or so years. Statistically, we are over 300 years into the potential for the next great quake. In the last 130 years, we have had four magnitude 7+ earthquakes between southwestern B.C. and northern Washington.

To be self-sufficient and ready to go it alone for at least 72 hours after the earthquake hits means having a plan for everyone in the family, a grabready emergency kit at home, at work and in the car, a back-up plan and an out-of-town (or out of province) contact number of a relative or friend who everyone can relay messages to in the event communications are down. Most people, though, are far from earthquake ready – in a province where a major earthquake could strike 50 years from now. Or tomorrow.

Lord Strathcona’s horse rides again Beginning with a very rough draft, regular writing kept the flow going. “The fun job was revising,” recalls Mackay, who admits seeing the first draft was exciting as was finally holding the finished work published by Touch Wood Editions, a publishing house focusing on stories about Canada’s West. Confessing that he may dust off a long buried manuscript involving a lawyer tangling with terrorists, Mackay is content to leave his years of law behind him.

Adventures

When Bob Mackay retired he traded drafting legal briefs for crafting books. Soldier of the Horse, Mackay’s first fiction novel, arrived on his desk last week. The tale of passion, war, camaraderie, bravery and history takes readers from love and legal wranglings in Manitoba to a young soldier’s Great War survival in France with the famous WW1 Canadian cavalry regiment, Lord Strathcona’s Horse. Based on the life of his dad, Tom Mackay, Bob not only dedicated years to researching the era, the cavalry and the art of writing, but made a pilgrimage with his wife, Pat, to France in 2008 for the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Moreuil Wood, where the Straths and their horses launched one of history’s last great cavalry charges on March 30, 1918. Weaving emotions generated by wind, rain

Ursula Maxwell-Lewis

and memories of scars (physical and emotional) left with his father and those who survived, Mackay ably translates his impressions into a period tale which returns the reader to a bygone era. No GPS, digital strategy, or satellite tracking, but simply the shock and awe of men, horses and brutal, unforgiving steel facing enemies and natural elements in the name of freedom, king and country. Mackay, a former rancher, teacher, submariner and lawyer, has plenty of material for his writing career.

Bob Mackay based Soldier of the Horse on his dad’s life.

As president of the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Authors’ Association and a long time member of the Rain Writer’s group in Langley, his advice to new writers is: “Just write. Every day. I must have written more than 350,000 words which have been condensed into 86,000 words for the novel.”

CAN YOU SAVE $10 MILLION? The Surrey School District is searching for $10 million in savings next year, and the public is invited to offer suggestions. The board of education is seeking public input on what priorities should be for the 2011/2012 school year as it tries to turn in a balanced budget of $576 million. A longer spring break, shifting specialist teachers to classroom duties and other cuts saved $12 million from the current operating budget. The board is consulting stakeholder groups as part of its budget process, and community members are welcome to make written submissions to Wayne Noye, secretary-treasurer, 14255 56 Ave., Surrey, B.C., V3X 3A3, or by email to: budget@sd36.bc.ca. Written submissions must be in by 4 p.m. Feb. 25. More info at www.sd36.bc.ca/general.

Q: Is it true that Botox® can be used to treat my sore jaw? A: Stress, fatigue, and even depression have been linked to jaw muscle tension. Sleep can be disrupted. Grinding and clenching can cause severe physical discomfort, and damage to the teeth, which can be painful and costly to remedy. Another risk is damage to the actual temporomandibular joint. Physicians tend to rely on bruxism treatments such as antianxiety medications, and physical therapy to provide patients relief. While some patients enjoy moderate success with these solutioins, they do not effectively treat the true source of the patients’ discomfort tense jaw muscles. Botox® treatment for TMJ is a simple, non-surgical procedure where the reconstituted protein is injected into specific muscles in the head and neck area blocking nerve impulses to the affected muscles, putting an almost immediate end to patients’ tension troubles. Botox® injections target only the problematic muscles, so jaw function is uncompromised. It is reasonable for this TMJ treatment procedure to be completed within 10-20 minutes. In a recent study conducted by the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, two-thirds of patients found Botox® therapy curative of their TMJ symptoms after only one session. Some patients find that the troublesome muscles begin to atrophy after a few sessions, so injections can be performed increasingly less often and may eventually become unnecessary. If you suffer from jaw tension or jaw pain and are tired of “solutions” that aren’t really solutions at all, contact our office today to learn more about Botox therapy. This could very well be the relief you have been dreaming of. Our office will perform a thorough examination to determine if Botox® treatment is the right solution for you. Call and book your free consultation.

CORMACK CLAIMS CUP Gary Cormack of Surrey and teammates Frank LaBounty, Vince Miele and Allison Duddy went undefeated earlier this month at the Kimberley Curling Club, winning the 2011 BC Wheelchair Curling Championship.

Sports in brief

Cormack, a gold medalist at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy, began by defeating Jim Armstrong 6-3, and followed up with a 10-2 victory over Bob MacDonald’s rink. His 2-0 record placed him in the final at the Feb. 4 to 6 event. MacDonald opened the final game with a single-point steal, but gave up six points in the following three ends. Cormack maintained control in the final ends, running MacDonald out of stones in the eighth for an 8-3 victory. – Black Press
