MALL MAN SENTENCED The real estate developer who built the Cloverdale Mall has been sentenced to four years in jail for fraud. Adolf Schiel, 74, and his daughter Sandy Schiel, were found guilty of submitting false GST claims in the early 2000s in relation to two real estate developments on Vancouver Island. Their sentencing hearing took place in December and January, and a provincial court judge sentenced them Feb. 15, according to news reports.

Tenant list grows at Brick Yard Station
Downtown organization welcomes more commercial density By Jennifer Lang Vera’s Burgers, Original Joe’s Restaurant, Clancy’s Meat Co., and Starbuck’s are among the latest additions to a new shopping plaza that’s expected to soon break ground in Cloverdale. Quiznos, Cobs Bread, and Westland Insurance will also be part of Anthem Properties Ltd.’s plans for its Brick Yard Station proposal, making its way through the final stages of approval at city hall. Those additional tenants are included in the latest project plans on the company’s website – and on eye-catching new signs hanging from the fenced-in, 10acre site this week. Those retailers will be joining larger anchor tenants like Rexall Drugs, CIBC, and Staples in the new development, replacing the large vacant lot on the northwest corner of Highway 10 and the Cloverdale by-pass. The rezoning and OCP amendment necessary for the proposal proceeds to final reading by Surrey city council on Feb. 28. If it passes, the sod turning could be as early as April, putting completion sometime later this year or early 2012. The Anthem Properties’ site is home to the former highways maintenance works yard and is zoned for industrial use. It consists of two parcels the company is seeking to have rezoned to permit a business park on its western portion and a

The Cloverdale BIA is happy to lay out the welcome mat for the development – and the redevelopment of the Cloverdale Mall site taking place on the opposite corner, says executive director Paul Orazietti. “It will really add some substance to the town centre,” he said. LOADS OF DOUGH Liberal leadership contender Kevin Falcon took in more than $708,000 in campaign contributions, the highest of the four remaining candidates for tomorrow’s race and higher than the spending limit for this type of campaign. Following the example by another contender, Mike de Jong, the Surrey-Cloverdale MLA released his contributor list earlier this week, showing many of his 332 contributors are Surreyarea businesses and companies, including $40,000 from Keg Restaurants and $25,000 from a firm belonging to Van- Cloverdale’s man? couver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini. LOTS OF B.C. LIBS Nearly 50,000 new members signed up by the deadline, B.C. Liberal Party officials say, making them eligible to help pick the next premier tomorrow (Feb. 26). The “dramatic increase” has pushed memberships to the 90,000-range, a clear signal of enthusiasm for the race, party president Mickey Patryluk said. It’s unknown how many new members each leadership candidate will be bringing to the fight; Kevin Falcon’s (Surrey-Cloverdale) backers say they’ve got 17,500; Mike de Jong’s campaign claims more than 10,000; and Christy Clark is expected to have between 20,000 to 26,000. Many of the newbies are believed to have signed up in Surrey, where three campaigners were concentrating on the South Asian community. Tomorrow’s vote is a preferential ballot. – Black Press

to the historic Cloverdale town centre, Orazietti said. (A smaller gateway sign or feature is in the works for the corner of Highway 10 and 184 Street as part of a collaboration between the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the City of Surrey.) Once complete, Brick Yard Station and phase one of the Cloverdale West Village mall redevelopment will bring new residential and commercial units to the downtown. Downtown businesses are a tertiary shopping district – third in line behind newer retail developments along Fraser Highway and 64 Avenue, he says. “People don’t need to come down this far to do their shopping,” he said. Cloverdale’s growth, meanwhile, has been in the triple digits, doubling in just 15 years. “It’s unmatched in the valley.” The trouble, Orazietti says, the growth has been “spread all over.” Concentrating some of that growth in the historic town centre will have benefits beyond the local small business community, Orazietti says. “Because of the upgrades to the main street area, it’s become a more attractive place to live, and it’s become more vibrant,” he said. As the new residential units fill up, the area will become more alive, resulting in less crime, for example, he said.
Loud TV commercials have been driving Surrey MP Nina Grewal crazy. Now the Conservative MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells has introduced a private member’s bill requiring broadcasters to play ads and TV shows at the same volume. “If you’re watching the TV at a certain volume you’re feeling comfortable with, but all of a sudden, this commercial comes and you’re all over the place,” she said, “looking for your remote and your wife or husband is shouting from the back, ‘put the volume down.’” Bill 621 will be debated in the House of Commons the first week of March and voted on after that. It seems Grewal’s airing of her pet peeve enjoyed some fortuitous timing. Last week, Canada’s regulatory body in charge of broadcasting, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, announced it was seeking comments from viewers on the loudness of TV ads. “Loud ads on television can disrupt an otherwise enjoyable program and are a source of significant annoyance for Canadians,” said CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein, Q.C. “Viewers should not have to adjust the volume at every commercial break, and we will work with the broadcasting industry to find an acceptable solution.” Interested parties may submit their comments by April 18, 2011. They may do so by filing out the online form at www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/com100/2011/ r110217.htm, by writing to the Secretary General, CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario,

Changes: a tale of two malls around the mall and pulling up on his motorcycle to open the store. When Maynes’ kids were little, she took them to visit Santa. “Sad to see it go for those reasons but oh sooo excited to see the new development,” wrote Maynes, who works at Re/Max Cloverdale/Langley along with her husband Bob. In addition to Santa visits, Lisa Bender-Foslett holds fond memories of Easter egg hunts and frosty malts. “The mixer shack had the best cotton candy gum balls,” she added, promising to bring in her own pictures of the mall under construction in 1973. “I didn’t spend a lot of time there,” wrote Not Quite South Surrey, a popular local blogger. “But I remember that was one of the last ‘Real’ Safeways, before they all became HUGE stores. I remember ‘hanging out’ (aka loitering) as a teen... [it] will be interesting to see the changes and hopefully revitalization of the huge potential in Cloverdale.” Tapping into that potential is the main reason the mall is be-
After years of promises and delays, it’s really happening. A demolition crew started chomping into what most agree is Cloverdale’s biggest eyesore Feb. 8, setting off a wave of reactions among readers: curiosity, nostalgia, and unbridled relief – the Cloverdale Mall is finally coming down. We’ve been posting photographs of the demolition on the Cloverdale Reporter’s Facebook Page, where we’ve created digital photo albums showing how the mall looked when tenants cleared out in October – and another documenting the unfolding teardown. The Facebook comments have been so fun to read, we couldn’t resist sharing them in print, too. “Wooo hooo yhaaaaa!” wrote Keith Aldrige. “It’ll be nice to see it all gone and cleaned up.” “End of an era,” commented Russel Lolacher. “My mom used to work there.” Local realtor Jo-Anne Maynes’ parents worked there, too – her mom and dad owned Ed’s Furniture and Appliances. Her dad has since passed away, but she can still picture him wandering
ing torn down – to make way for a new, commercial and residential development. Construction on phase one of Cloverdale West Village is expected to get underway later this year. The first phase includes a new home for the Cloverdale Legion plus about 100 residential units proponents say will help build density in the downtown core. By coincidence, it’s also the end of the line for the Cloverdale Antique Mall, one of the last remnants of Cloverdale’s famed antique alley. It easily be argued that it’s been a victim of its own success. In contributing to the overall economic health of Cloverdale’s commercial sector, it got priced out, according to the man who started the mall in 1999, Bill Reid. The landlord wanted to hike the lease – a devastating development for the owners, the 40-odd antique and collectible dealers under the mall’s roof, and the hundreds of local consignment sellers. Ironically, business has never been better – thanks to the

liquidation sale. Reid says a third of the customers are locals who never knew the mall existed. “This is incredible,” they tell him. “How come you’re moving?” When it opened, Cloverdale was home to at least 10 antiques and collectible stores, most along 176 Street, including the incredible Red Barn Store, which is also getting out of the antique business, sooner rather than later. That will leave just two shops here. It’s impossible to deny it. Things are changing in every direction you look. Most are entirely positive: the new recreation centre is nearly complete. And kitty-corner from the old mall is the site of a new shopping plaza. Add to that the promise of a new car barn here for the Fraser Valley Railway Society – and local launch for the heritage rail demonstration project – and it’s clear Cloverdale is changing for the better.

22 City of Surrey press release says. Watts led a mission of delegates from 24 companies in clean energy, education, wood and manufacturing, film and entertainment, life sciences, communications technology and business and finance sectors. Citing Surrey’s deep ties to India, Watts said it was important for her to experience the country in order to understand those ties firsthand, calling the tour a success. “This was a mission about achieving eco-
nomic success and jobs for Surrey, and fostering relationships between our companies and their appropriate business matches in India, and I’m pleased to say that was achieved,” she said. Surrey signed an MOU with the City of Jalandhar to work on sustainability initiatives and emissions reductions. Several Surrey-based companies are exploring new business opportunities and partnerships in India as a result of connections made dur-
ing the trip. BioLytical Laboratories came back armed with a deal with a network of eight hospitals in India. The company will provide a 60-second blood test for diagnosing HIV. SFU came home with agreements that could lead to a joint PhD program, while Onux Nexus worked out what it hopes will be several deals and create an endowment for students in a school in Punjab. – with files from Kevin Diakiw, Black Press

Mall turns into pile of rubble By Jennifer Lang What little remains of the Cloverdale Mall is quickly being replaced by mountains of debris as excavators chomp their way through the structure. By last Friday morning, nearly all of the former Safeway anchor store had been demolished, and two large excavators were busy pulling apart the walls and roof of the atrium. And on Wednesday, the 5710 175 Street entrance – memorable for its raspberry paint job and the wooden sign spelling out “Cloverdale Shoppers Plaza” – was pulled down, a spectacle witnessed by a small crowd of students from neighbouring Cloverdale Learning Centre. One recorded the event on his iPhone and planned to post the video to YouTube. Demolition began in earnest Feb. 8 and
clables are being piled and then sorted to be hauled away. The mall – built in 1973 and located on City of Surrey property – is being torn down to make way for a new development called Cloverdale West Village, a mix of commercial and residential units. The first phase be-
gins later this year and includes a new home for the Cloverdale Legion that’s about the same size as the current branch at 10,000 square feet. The project is being spearheaded by the Surrey City Development Corporation, TL Housing Solutions Ltd and Townline Homes Inc.

NDP LEADER: EARLIER HST VOTE New West MLA and interim NDP leader Dawn Black has introduced a call for an amendment in the legislature allowing for an earlier HST initiative vote. Black said the move would require a vote to be held by June of this year
instead of Sept. 24. “People of B.C. have made it clear this gap is too long – and they’ve made a compelling argument for an earlier vote,” she said. “The bill requires majority support.

lamps, and vintage porcelain tea sets all under one roof. When original owner Bill Reid opened the mall with his wife Marion in 1999, Cloverdale was home to more than a dozen antique stores, most along 176 Street, including Red Barn Antiques, now also in the process of shutting down. That will leave just two shops, signaling the end of Cloverdale’s reputation as antique alley and its star status as a must-see attraction for cruise ship passengers touring the Fraser Valley by bus, Reid said last week. “It’s pretty sad, pretty sad,” he said. Garrett agrees. “If you wanted to be in the antique business, you went to Cloverdale,” he said. “We feel very sad about the fact that we can’t continue our business here. I planned on retiring here.” The significance of the mall’s passing won’t be lost on the clientele. “For a lot of the costumers, this is their quiet time, this is their place to hide. These people come in here to relax. It’s generally a pretty quiet place to be.” Weeks into the liquidation sale, the sheer magnitude of items left to be sold remained impressive. “Our tag line has always been thousands of items, millions of memories,” Garrett says. Have anyone ever done an estimate? “No. Well, maybe after a couple of glasses of wine on occasion, but nobody could ever remember the answer in the morning.” There have been some memorable items over the years, from Queen Victoria’s bloomers (“She was no petite woman,” grins Garrett, adding the gonch was legit. “They had all the proper paperwork”). “I don’t know why a pair of underwear would draw so much attention,” he says, “but it did.” Then there was the time they picked up a beat-up antique radio that didn’t even work. But it was a pretty-looking old piece, and they figured they could get a few hundred dollars for it.

Drivers donate racing fees
By Jennifer Lang This weekend as Western Canada’s top harness racing drivers compete for a spot at the nationals they’ll also be racing for a great local cause – the Surrey Association for Community Living. All eight drivers in Saturday afternoon’s 2011 Western Regional Driving Championship at Fraser Downs are donating a percentage of their racing fees. Fraser Downs, host of the eight-race competition, will match the drivers’ donation. Hometown heroes Jim Marino, Mike Hennessy and Dave Hudon will be up against Alberta’s Gerry HuMichael Hennessy don, Brandon Campbell and Keith Clark, Saskatchewan’s Glen LeDrew and Dallas McKee of Manitoba at the Feb. 26 championships. The first race starts at 1:15 p.m. Top drivers in terms of standings determined who would be heading to the regionals. Ken Stratton, General Dave Hudon Manager of Fraser Downs, worked with his marketing staff to ensure drivers and their families enjoy their stay over the Feb. 25-26 weekend. Each driver will receive a VIP package and their families will be invited to the Clubhouse or Homestretch dining areas to watch the live races – plus they’re invited to a post-race dinner celebration. The top two Western drivers advance the nationals this May at Prince Edward Island’s Red Shores Racetrack. The Surrey Association for Community Living describes Measuring Up as a collaborative process that engages persons with disabilities, local government, the business sector and other community leaders to assess and improve local accessibility and inclusion in Surrey.

Stingers leave mark, take prize Contributed Cloverdale’s Bantam C5 team Stingers travelled to Kamloops this past weekend (Feb. 18 to 20) hoping to bring home the prize. This great group of kids played hard and won almost all of their games in the Kamloops Hockey Tournament. With our only loss against Chilliwack, everyone thought we might be lucky and
place fifth, but because of our strong, earlier performances we had more goals “for” than anyone else in our pool and surprisingly came in fourth place overall before the playoffs. This meant that everyone had to go to bed early on Saturday night because we had to beat the first place team the next morning at 7 a.m. or face elimination. Our boys were totally committed and battled hard to beat the Kelowna Flyers first
thing Sunday morning. With an outstanding performance from each and every one of them we advanced to the finals. The final game was a nail biter (for the parents) but with an all-round great team effort this group of 13- and 14-year-olds beat the Ridge Meadows Warriors (7-5) and brought home the first place trophy. Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff.

Cassidy’s Craft Campaign kicks off its second year The legacy of the brave girl with a beguiling smile and selfless nature endures By Sheila Reynolds It’s been more than a year since Cloverdale’s Cassidy Briggs passed away, but her legacy and spirit remain strong. Last week marked the kick off of the second Annual Cassidy’s Craft Campaign at George Greenaway Elementary, where Cassidy attended school. It was Cassidy’s dream to make life better for young patients at B.C. Children’s Hospital. During her many stays, she noticed there was little for kids to do and came up with
a plan to raise money to buy arts and crafts supplies for the hospital. The campaign was launched last year and resulted in a craft area filled with supplies being created at the hospital. Now, the school and her family want to keep Cassidy’s dream alive by donating money to replenish and bolster the kids’ art area. Cassidy was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer before her eighth birthday in 2008 and despite a brave battle, died on Jan. 11 last year. Prior to her death, her beguiling smile and selfless nature rallied her school and the surrounding
HAZELGROVE ELEMENTARY Hazelgrove Elementary has been a very busy place this month. We celebrated Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and held several Walk-to-School events. Teachers and students have been focusing on teamwork. Students will be working with their buddy classes on a special project to showcase teamwork before the end of the month. Feb. 23 was the provincial anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day. Our students earned house team points by wearing pink in support of anti-bullying. Several students presented an anti-bullying skit and the Grade 3 students performed a manners rap and our school assemblies the same day. Our school choir of over 80 students has been busily preparing for the district choral festival and will represent us on March 9. We wish them well.

Translink is counting on a 26-per cent jump in the number of motorists who will pay to use the Golden Ears Bridge this year, but bridge costs will continue to far outstrip tolls coming in. Even with a rosier traffic forecast, the transportation authority will still pay out $33 million more than it receives in tolls for the Fraser River crossing connecting Surrey and Langley to Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Translink’s Ken Hardie said taxpayers won’t have to cover the shortfall. –Black Press
Q Is an older home a better value than a
new one? There isn’t a definitive answer to this question. You should look at each home for its individual characteristics. Generally, older homes may be in more established neighbourhoods, offer more ambiance, and have lower property tax rates. People who buy older homes, however, shouldn’t mind maintaining their home and making some repairs. Newer homes tend to use more modern architecture and systems, are usually easier to maintain, and may be more energy-efficient. People who buy new homes often don’t want to worry initially about upkeep and repairs.

Is it true Macs are now prone to viruses? Yes, an onslaught of malicious os-x-software viruses including trojans, worms & malware is now becoming more prevalent on Macs. What do you do when you clean up a computer and how long does it take? Check for dirt and grime in the fans, check the hard drive for fragmentation and bad sectors, check for & remove malicious spyware, trojans, malware, worms & root kits. Turn off unneeded services that could be slowing your computer down. Make sure all the drivers are updated to their latest versions. Uninstall programs that are no longer being used & check for any issues you’ve mentioned. This takes usually 1 hr but could take up to 1.5 hrs depending your computer’s condition. Can I use someone else’s laptop power adapter on my laptop? Only if…a) the output for the volts and amps is identical and b) the tip is exactly the same & when connected lights up the port. When I touch the power plug and port in the lap it starts up otherwise it won’t charge. It sounds like you have a power port problem. Will it require a new part? It could need a part called a power jet.

BACK PAIN
Q
A
I have had back pain for 2 months. My G.P. has referred me to physiotherapy for an exercise program. Will this help? It is important to identify the structures involved that are causing the pain. I can presume that you have had the necessary x-rays/scans and that your G.P has concluded that your back pain is of musculoskeletal origin. A customized exercise program is focused on regaining muscle balance, improving core stability, strength and flexibility. Postural education and correction is of vital importance to achieve a successful outcome. The deep muscles of the back and stomach are known as the core stabilizing muscles. The core muscles are endurance type muscles which function at a low percentage of maximum for long periods of time. They serve to stabilize your back in the midline position thereby decreasing the stress on the back. The core muscles are activated in different postures namely sitting, lifting, pulling, carrying and in many other work related activities. The exercise program should be gradual but progressive in nature. The ultimate goal of a physiotherapy/rehabilitation program is to decrease pain, improve functional ability and prevent recurrence of back pain.
