Fresh calls to save racing By Jennifer Lang Sandra Roberts chose a symbolic morning to protest in front of Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. April 16 marked the beginning of a long break for harness racing and the start of the 2011 thoroughbred season at Hastings Racecourse. Both tracks are owned by Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which says separate, six-month seasons are needed to avoid competing for customers. About a dozen local horsemen and their supporters took part, hoping to bolster efforts to keep harness racing alive at Cloverdale’s landmark track by reinstating a longer season. “We need it as a viable industry so we can support ourselves. It’s our livelihoods,” said Roberts, leading Daves Showboat, in front of the casino on 60 Avenue. “We don’t accept their downsizing of the industry,” said Roberts, an owner-turned-activist who has also circulated a petition to demonstrate community support. Horsemen aren’t asking for added race days next year – despite dropping from 107 race days in 2009/10 to 80 in 2010/11. But they’re united in
pressing for a longer season with race days spread out, something they say will save thousands of direct and indirect jobs here and across the Fraser Valley. According to a handout, when Great Canadian bought out Orangeville Racing, it took over the existing lease from the city of Surrey, which said races will be held “continuously and diligently” throughout the year. Harness Racing B.C. says six months is too long for a break but too short for a viable season. Owners and trainers like Brent Hill are forced to take summer jobs or pull up stakes altogether. “Fraser Downs is unjust,” Hill said. “They’re saying they don’t want competition from the standardbreds for the thoroughbred horses, but at the same time they’re the ones who create the competition from online gambling, poker, sports betting, baseball, football, hockey.” They’re asking Cloverdale residents to show their support by email to info@ fraserdowns.com. Protesters also want the public to know Fraser Downs is evicting horses by closing four barns until October.

By Jennifer Lang Ambro Blacktie may have retired from racing, but it seems his luck is holding – for now. The champion standardbred, who won $360,000 in his prime, was turned out a couple of months ago at the age of 10. April 5, before the post-season squeeze, the one-time Horse of the Year arrived at Greener Pastures, a rehabilitation and adoption centre in South Langley. April 15 was the final day of the winter/ spring season at Fraser Downs Racetrack. Horses like Blacktie, who’s retiring sound and three-year-olds like Kokanee, a healthy, good-looking newbie who just never got up to speed, will be looking for new lives beyond the racecourse. This year, there’s even more pressure

on Greener Pastures, a society that helps find homes for retired standardbreds, described as friendly, loving horses who thrive on having a job to do and try their best to please. In a surprise move, Fraser Downs is closing four barns for the summer, forcing some owners and trainers to find somewhere else to stable their horses – or offload them entirely come April 30. Alina MacLeod, program coordinator at Greener Pastures, will have to turn them away because the centre’s already at full capacity with 11 horses. “If we don’t take them in the next couple of days, they’ll be gone,” she said. Some will end up giving their horses to the man who pulls up to the barns at Fraser Downs and takes unwanted race-

horses away by the trailer-full. “We figure he’s a horse dealer,” MacLeod says. “I’m sure he finds homes for some of them.” Others aren’t so lucky. You may never hear the actual word “slaughterhouse” from a Fraser Downs insider, but it’s no secret what fate awaits at least some of the not-so-lucky, four-footed athletes once their racing careers are over. The situation is worse this year. “With the shorter racing season, it’s hard for them to hang on to them, too,” she said. Normally, trainers break babies over the summer, hoping to recoup expenses for feed, veterinary care and upkeep once racing resumes. See NICE BOY / Page 3

in brief
“If there’s no money coming in, there’s some nice horses here that are going to lose their lives,” veteran trainer Tom Bourdeau told The Reporter recently. Some horses will find homes in rural Mennonite communities, as pack horses, or as riding horses, thanks to Greener Pastures. The shorter racing season at Fraser Downs has also placed an added financial burden on Greener Pastures. The main source of income for Greener Pastures are 50/50 draws held every race day to raise cash for food, vet, farrier care and labour. The previous September-June season meant there was only a twomonth gap to budget and plan for. “Now we have a big six month gap,” said MacLeod. who has worked at Fraser Downs as a groom since she was 13. To the editor;
The Americans are our biggest market for our goods and services. They pay 50 per cent more for their private health care than we do for our public health care. Canadian public health care makes our products significantly cheaper to market. This competitive advantage that we enjoy is being lost as more of our health care is privatized. Canada now has the longest hospital waiting lists of all the O.E.C.D.

Director continues ‘family business’ of vaudeville and generosity By Jennifer Lang In 2003, a vaudeville troupe from Cloverdale stepped up to help an Aldergrove father who’d been involved in a hitand-run accident that nearly claimed his life. He’d survived – barely – (a highways maintenance worker found him in a ditch) but he lost his left leg and required several surgeries. Incredibly, just a few months later, he appeared onstage at the May 10 show, demonstrating a few steps in a new prosthetic leg. The fundraiser, which featured renowned actor Fran Dowie, his daughter, Susie Francis, and her troupe The Vaudevillians – was a sell-out. Proceeds went to help David Slack, a married father of three who spent months recovering from his ordeal. It was, however, Dowie’s last performance. But it wasn’t the end of a proud family tradition. Dowie, who’d spent a lifetime spreading laughter and the art

The downside of keeping your winter tires on year round is that they wear out very quickly," In most conditions, you can usually get three or four seasons out of them before you have to replace the winter set when you're swapping them out with an all-season or summer tire. If you drive them year-round, the heat will wear away the specific winter tire compounds. You'll also sacrifice some cornering and grip if you leave them on throughout the year."

If you’d like to learn more about Surrey’s history, there’s still time to register for one of the Surrey Archives’ spring lectures, continuing April 30 and May 7 in Cloverdale. Next up is Surrey: A Photographic History, a visual presentation featuring hundreds of archival photos, revealing a Surrey you may not have seen before. That’s on Saturday, April 30. Pioneer Profiles on Saturday, May 7 takes a look at what it was like for settlers to live in Surrey before 1900. This session tells the stories of four local families. You’ll find out where they lived, why they came to Surrey and what legacies they left behind. Those early pioneers did not have it easy. The sessions run from 11 a.m. to noon at the Surrey Archives, located at 17671 56 Avenue. Previous topics included Community Names, an introduction to the origin of Surrey place names, and Giant Killers, where historian David Sandquist looked at the clearing of Green Timbers forest. The session fee is $10. Pre-register by calling 604-502-6459.
