Confusion clears over Sunday flea market flap By Jennifer Lang An update and expansion of Cloverdale’s long-running Sunday flea market will be going ahead – with the original operator on side. Last month, the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association issued a request for proposals from qualified operators to assume management, marketing and operation of a new weekend market. New and exDave Melenchuk

isting vendors will be encouraged to participate in the new format, association general manager Dave Melenchuk said, adding there had initially been some confusion following the announcement. The enhanced market was supposed to combine the traditional flea market and a country market, all in one place, in a bid to “At the end reach out to new customers who hadn’t been before – and to woo back those who hadn’t visited the Sunday flea market in years. But some long-time vendors worried that they would not be in-

In revitalizing and expanding the flea market, the association also hoped to make clear there will be zero tolerance for counterfeit goods due to health and safety concerns. “The authorities had visited from time to time,” Melenchuk said, adding the association had also met with the RCMP’s border integrity division. “It’s our desire that that does not happen.” The flea market – which boasts an average weekly attendance of See MARKET / Page 2

3,000 to 5,000 – is on hiatus during the Cloverdale Rodeo, taking place over the May long weekend, but will return June 4 and evolve from there. The association plans to work with the market operator to expand the products and services available by including artisans, new food vendors, and even the occasional entertainment attraction like midway rides. “The area is growing. You get a lot of people here every Sunday, but I think there’s the opportunity to expand what we have to appeal to

other user groups,” he said. “I think at the end of the day, everybody is going to be better off.” The weekly flea market, now in its 33rd year, has been run by the same operator for many years, under contract with the association, which oversees the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. An immediate goal might include improving the market’s web presence with a site that would have a schedule of events – and enable vendors to book table space online. “Right now, a lot of people line up at 2 a.m.”

By Jennifer Lang They’re feeling psyched and positive, but at the moment, they’re not exactly sure how their bikes are getting up onto the roof. That’s how South Surrey cyclist Cheryl Lydynuik and Ride for Hope teammate Brenda Jeklin are feeling heading into a 24-hour rooftop marathon they’re calling Peddlers on the Roof. On May 20, they’ll climb to the roof of the Cloverdale Marketplace IGA, where they’ll spend 24 hours pedaling for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. The two women – great friends and cycling buddies – are members of Team Alliance, taking part in the 2011 Ride For Hope, a 200-km charity bike ride on July 13 that starts at Morgan Crossing in South Surrey and will end

in the town of Hope, B.C. But first, there’s that 24-hour rooftop “spin” in Cloverdale. Cheryl says they’ll be using a ladder to reach the hatch to the roof, but so far, it remains a mystery as to how the bikes will be making it through that little hatch. She’s confident that store owner, event organizer, and Team Alliance Cycling Club teammate Rob Neufeld has it all worked out. “Rob is so supportive. He is so keen. He’s just been great,” says Cheryl, who is clearly excited about the physical demands that lie ahead, while all of Cloverdale parties below, first at the Rodeo Days Chili Cook-off at Clover Square Village Friday evening, then at the store’s charity barbecue fundraiser Saturday morning following the Cloverdale Rodeo parade.

The two “Peddlers on the Roof ” plan to take rest breaks, and expect other Team Alliance members will be helping them out. “Otherwise, we’ll be up there all night!” says Cheryl, urging supporters to visit during the night to cheer them on. “We’re going to be lonely in those dark, wee hours of the morning. It would be nice to have some company.” Cheryl, who just turned 50, got into cycling last year, took part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a multi-day cycling event for the BC Cancer Foundation. All proceeds from the Ride for Hope fundraiser go to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, a facility that provides specialized care for children with lifethreatening illnesses, and support for their families.

This Saturday, the Surrey Museum invites you to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. Try crafts like Origami, learn how to write your name in different languages, cure ailments using Mongolian acupressure, or just play games, see films, and enjoy dance and music performances. The May 14 event, running from 1 to 3 p.m. (drop in, by donation), will also feature a Japanese gift-wrapping workshop that teaches visitors how to quickly wrap presents without paper, tape or scissors. The fast, simple meth-

od – called furoshiki in Japan and bojagi in Korea – doesn’t take special skills, just a piece of cloth, eliminating the need for waste paper and non-recyclable bows and ribbons. The workshop is presented by Hop Frog Pond owner Doris Jetz and members of the Japanese community volunteer association, Tonari Gumi. “Our young volunteers will have a chance to promote Japanese culture, says Sayuri Sugarara, Tonari Gumi program coordinator. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710-56A Avenue, Surrey, B.C.

Hours of operation are Tuesdays-Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sundays, Mondays and Statutory Holidays. Admission in 2011 is sponsored by the Friends of the Surrey Museum Society. For more information, call 604-592-6956 or visit www.surrey.ca/heritage. – Cloverdale Reporter

Battle coverage To the editor; Over the last several weeks the Cloverdale Reporter has been very supportive with your coverage of our on-going battle with Great Canadian Casino to ensure harness racing remains an industry in our community. Well I would like to thank you very much! At last night’s (May 6th) rally we received the good news that our government was listening and would grant us 10 months of racing commencing January, 2012. This was accomplished because of all the great support we received from everyone in the community. Once again I would to thank the local reporters for getting the message out and to the community for standing behind us. We still have many hurdles to cross but things are starting to look brighter. Hope to see you at the races this fall.

CLOVERDALE FAIR GROUNDS

Civic candidates in place The opposition party in Surrey civic politics has put some of its candidates in place for the coming fall election. The left-leaning Surrey Civic Coalition (SCC) hopes to secure some seats from the Surrey First-dominated council and Surrey First Education-ruled Board of Education. The SCC currently holds one seat on each: veteran councillor Bob Bose and oneterm school trustee Ijaz Chatha. May 7, SCC nominated Gary Robinson, Rina Gill, Stephanie Ryan and Grant Rice to run for council, while Charlene Dobie, Laurence Greeff, and Moh Chelali will be SCC’s school trustee candidates. Gill, Ryan and Rice ran with SCC in 2008, while Robinson, who served on Surrey council from 1987 to 1998, ran as an independent last time. Trustee hopeful Greeff was an SCC candidate in the last election while Dobie and Chalali are new to civic politics. Chelali has run for the provincial NDP in Surrey-White Rock previously. About 100 people attended the Firefighters Barge Inn nomination meeting. Returning candidate Ryan said Monday she believes there are a number of issues that aren’t being addressed by the current council and school board. Prime among those is the number of portables at Surrey’s overcrowded schools. A small elementary school recently re-opened in Clayton, which Ryan said is great, but brings the city only five more classrooms. In the 1990s, Surrey faced the same situation, and council refused to issue any more build-

ing permits. Suddenly, developers, builders and realtors were part of a lobbying force to the province that brought this city more school

construction. A second nomination meeting will be held, likely in September. “This way we can continue to gain momen-

tum and have a second nomination as the November election gets closer,” “SCC president Gord Savard. – Black Press

She sees shades of grey By Jennifer Lang Two years ago, Linda Bellamy stopped dying her hair and began growing it out naturally. No more Clairol. No more chemicals. “I’ve been every colour but black, she says, adding she’s been colouring on and off for years. “I’ve had all different hair styles and different colours. Going naturally grey – she describes her shade as “Viking Blonde – hasn’t exactly been easy for Bellamy, an esthetician at Michaud’s Salon and Spa in downtown Cloverdale. People perceive you differently when you’re grey, she says. Her customers and co-workers were fine, but it was different when she was out and about.

“You know you’ve become part of what I call the ‘invisible age’ when you’re walking with your daughter and there’s a wolf-whistle and it’s not for you, says Bellamy, who’s 58. “As you become older, you become invisible to some people. Going grey meant strangers made certain assumptions. “If somebody thinks you’re in your 40s as opposed to your 50s, their perception and how they treat you is different, she says. “I do find the older you are, the more invisible you are. She admits it was also hard working at a salon and not getting a haircut for two years. “It’s not easy in the salon and spa industry. They’re constantly

trying to cut it. The past two years may not have been easy, but every second has been worth the effort. On May 2, she had it all cut off – nine inches. Stylist Kelsey Lakota carefully divided Bellamy’s hair into sections, bunching it into ponytails for maximum length. BED RACES You’ll be amazed at the zany – and surprisingly competitive – Bed Races. Teams compete for men’s, women’s and best dressed trophies, which all resemble bedpans. Participants include everybody from local high school students and community groups to teams from local businesses. Last year’s competitors ran the gamut, from anxiouslooking young men in lime green Spandex to a boisterous gang of marauding pirates from the Surrey Museum. A new “hospitality” division has been added this year. Bed races get underway at 5:30 p.m.

MarketPlace Classic Thursday, May 19 and run to 7:30 p.m. It takes place on 176A Street, between 57 and 58 Avenue, where the judges’ reviewing stand is set up.

DECORATED BIKE PARADE The bed races are preceded by the Kids’ Decorated Bike Parade, Thursday, May 19 at 5 p.m. Three kids’ bikes and other prizes will be awarded by random draw. There’s also a special prize for most creative entry. Be warned: the competition is pretty stiff! Takes place on The 5700-block of 176A Street.

CHILI COOK-OFF A spirit of friendly, but fierce, competition reigns at this event, which features good

food and entertainment. And it’s all free. Sample free chili served up by dozens of participants but don’t forget to vote for your favourite. Last year, more than 4,500 people turned out to taste test, but supplies ran out. Hint: bring your own bowl and spoon. Last year, Team Falcon, comprised of local MLAs Kevin Falcon, Stephanie Cadieux and staff took home the coveted first place prize in 2010 – the third straight year. Will 2011 bring their fourth chili cook off title? There’s live music, too: Danica Danielsen and the B.C. Junior Talent Search semi finalists perform. Friday, May 20, at Clover Square Village (Hwy 10 and 177B St.) from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

CLOVERDALE RODEO PARADE Nowhere does the spirit of Rodeo week ring truer than in downtown Cloverdale. Each year, as many as 10,000 eager spectators pour onto the sidewalks along the parade route for the annual Cloverdale Rodeo Parade. On Saturday, May 21 there will be more than 80 entries and 1,200 participants rolling, marching, dancing, trotting and walking along the parade route in floats, classic cars, on horseback, as part of marching bands and community groups, or even astride motorcycles. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Don’t forget to bring along a non-perishable food item to donate to the Surrey Food Bank. Volunteers will be collecting donations. There will also be donation bins along the route.

The Cloverdale Lions present their annual pancake breakfast at Hawthorne Square at the 5748 176 Street. Live entertainment by the Trailer Park Playboys.

Deflated? The right amount of air in your tires can help in your fuel consumption efforts. When tires are not inflated enough, they generate too much heat, wear out faster, and give you much more resistance against the roads. Make sure when checking your air pressure the tires are warm. Check to see how much pressure should be in your tires, make sure that you do not overfill. Doing this regularly will give you a smooth ride, and help improve your fuel consumption.

Q: My daughter is 16 years old with very crooked teeth. She is a beautiful, outgoing young lady but self-conscious about her crooked smile. I am afraid if I don’t have her teeth straightened it could impact her self-conďŹ dence and the way others perceive her. I’ve heard there are new technologies to help straighten teeth without the need for metal braces. What exactly are my options? A: You are correct when you say a crooked smile can have a dramatic impact on her interaction with others; this is a known fact. It can also create difďŹ culty in proper brushing and ossing; can lead to tooth decay; abnormal wear on teeth/tooth mobility; tension in chewing muscles; clicking and popping in jaw joints; headaches and TMJ pain. Not to mention accumulation of plaque and calculus – which leads to gum disease and eventually bone loss and lack of tooth support... You are making the correct decision to help your daughter straighten her teeth. In recent years an alternative to metal braces called Invisalign has become popular with teenagers and adults. It helps patients of all ages feel conďŹ dent in their smiles and themselves. The Invisalign system is actually a series of clear plastic virtually invisible aligner trays, which gradually move teeth to achieve a great smile and proper bite. By using a series of clear, removable aligners that are changed about every 2 – 3 weeks, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth towards the smile you’ve always wanted. The aligners are made of a hard clear plastic and are removable, allowing easy brushing and ossing for proper hygiene. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and cleanings become easier since the aligner trays are popped out for improved access – quicker, faster, more thorough visits. This is the single biggest advantage over metal braces because often accumulation of plaque and calculus around standard brackets can lead to decalciďŹ cation of surrounding teeth and appearance of unsightly white decalciďŹ cation spots on teeth. Another distinct advantage is that removable trays make an active lifetsyle easier to accommodate. When you are playing sports or an instrument there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums. IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFECTIVE AS TRADITONAL BRACES? In the hands of a skilled practitioner and when worn according to doctors recommendation, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment. HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEARING HIS OR HER ALIGNERS? Teen aligner trays come with built-in compliance inidicators that estimate approximate time your teen spends wearing the aligners. Indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time so you can easily monitor your child’s compliance. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR ALIGNERS? Should this occur, tells the child’s Dentist right away. He or she may ask the patient to start wearing their previous set of aligners and the Dentist will order a new set of replacement aligner trays. In our ofďŹ ce Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to 6 individual replacement aligners at no charge. HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST? The cost of Invisalign is usually slightly less than conventional braces because aligners require little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor so less time is spent at the doctors ofďŹ ce. Over 1 million patients are now smiling thanks to Invisalign. If you would like to book a FREE* Invisalign consultation in our ofďŹ ce please visit:

her hair after conversing with a long-time client one day –a cancer survivor. “She said it would be nice to have a wig with grey hair. Because that’s what would be natural.” Bellamy realized it would be best if her hair were unprocessed, untreated, and naturally grey when she donated it to a wig-maker. Her hair was already short, so she shaved it. Then she started growing it out, around Mothers’ Day two years ago. On May 2, 2011 there were at least eight inches to cut.

It was a big day. The salon organized a full makeover for Bellamy, complete with hair, makeup and clothes – plus photos documenting the transformation. Four hours later, it was all over. The Viking blonde locks were replaced by a dramatic auburn with copper-brown highlights, and the straggly lengths had been cut into a smart-looking pixie. Her hair and makeup done, Bellamy slipped into a fitted, sleeveless turquoise party dress with a spring-like floral pattern. How did she feel? “Great,” she said, smiling. “The cut and the colour – it’s

the whole thing, it’s not just the hair, it brings it up to date and gives an impression.” Surprisingly, she felt transformed on the inside, too. “It was quite emotional when she was doing my hair, as [stylist Kelsey Lakota] cut it. In the last two years, a lot has happened to me. It’s interesting, the whole range of emotions.” Once those grey roots start poking through her gorgeous auburn/copper-brown ‘do, will she reach for the Clairol or will she embrace her destiny as a silver fox? She hasn’t decided yet.
