When tires are not inflated enough, they generate too much heat, wear out faster, and give you much more resistance against the roads. Make sure when checking your air pressure the tires are warm. Check to see how much pressure should be in your tires, make sure that you do not overfill. Doing this regularly will give you a smooth ride, and help improve your fuel consumption.

Flyer campaign launched By Kevin Diakiw The friends and family of a man murdered in Cloverdale two years ago are appealing for public assistance in finding the person who gunned him down. Christopher Whitmee was murdered at about 11 p.m. May 16, 2009 in the washroom of the Legacy Showroom in the Clover Inn at 176 Street and 57 Avenue. A second shooting victim, a 28-year-old Surrey man, was known to police. Investigators are now saying with certainty that Whitmee was not the intended target. “Often times people don’t approach police in the first instance after a serious crime like homicide. Big cause barbecue The Cloverdale Ambulance station at 176 Street and 58A Avenue hosts a fundraising barbecue Saturday, May 21 at the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade. The Surrey RCMP’s armored vehicle will be there (subject to operational requirements), along with hotdogs, treats, and possibly the canine squads. Cloverdale paramedic Will Rogers is hoping to raise awareness and support for his Million Dollar Journey on behalf of the Servants Anonymous Society. Rogers, a 51-year-old father of three, is about to embark on three ultra longdistance running, biking and swimming endurance feats to highlight the cause. He’s ultimately hoping to sign up 10,000 people who will commit $20 a month for 24 months, raising $5 million to provide SAS with ongoing funding. Visit his website at www.willrogers.ca for more information. The barbecue runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“What the PST legislation did not contain were PST exemptions aimed specifically at small, independent businesses,” Robertson writes. “So construction workers like welders, plumbers, electricians and other tradespersons had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their work trucks, tools and equipment that they used to earn a living; retailers and corner store operators had to pay an additional seven per cent on their shelving, refrigerators and cash registers; accountants and other professionals had to pay PST on their office furniture, computers and software; truckers had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their truck tractors and trailers …” and so forth. This is what the HST fixes. Obviously, Big Labour doesn’t like all these independent contractors. Therefore the NDP must also “fight” HST. I’ve mentioned before that the NDP-Vander Zalm axis of nonsense wants to deprive the poor of a modest tax shift in their favour, paid for by voluntary purchases of more affluent consumers. I’ve talked about the trend towards selfemployment and small business as the Canadian economy adapts in a fast-changing world. You may not like that trend, and you may wish that everyone could have a union job with an employer-subsidized pension. That’s not what is happening today.

Many changes over the years From page one
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, is taking notes. In 2008, responding to pressure from animal rights activists, the Cloverdale Rodeo switched to an invitation-only format. It was a difficult decision, because it meant losing status as a sanctioned rodeo. Cloverdale Rodeo contestants don’t the earn points they need to compete on the seasonal rodeo circuit – but they do vie for one of the richest payouts in Canada. It must feel like sweet vindication to invite the Canadian and world champs and have them RSVP four years running. “We are very fortunate that they are very eager to come,” Smythe says, recalling the “extreme challenge” to change the rodeo’s format. “We stepped up to the plate in coming up with an invitational format,” she says.
The format firmly in place, it’s gratifying to see much bigger wheels in the industry take notice. When two Cloverdale Rodeo association reps – general manager Dave Melenchuk and administrator Jamie Rogers – went to the Houston rodeo in March, “How’s the format change?” was the question on everyone’s lips. Folks liked what they heard; Houston’s 20-day rodeo will conclude competition next year with a format modeled on Cloverdale’s. “They’re following our format. That’s huge,” Smythe says. “It’s huge for the city of Surrey and for downtown Cloverdale.” Smythe is also really excited about celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Cloverale Rodeo, founded in 1945 by the late Jack Shannon and Clarke Greenaway. During the 65th Cloverdale Rodeo and 122nd Country Fair, that proud history

will be honored in a display at the newlyopened Cloverdale Recreation Centre next to the rodeo fairgrounds, alongside an exhibit recognizing the Surrey RCMP’s 60th anniversary. The rec centre is also the location for the Surrey Arts Council’s Art Zone and the Kids Can Rodeo, a Surrey Food Bank fundraiser involving creative displays of cans from various community teams. But she’s saved the biggest surprise for last. Working their connections with senator Gerry St. Germain, the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association has lined up an armed forces salute for this year’s rodeo. A Canadian military flypast from CFB Comox will roar overhead Monday, May 23 at 2 p.m. “Those kind of things, you work on them for a whole year, and finally you get the okay that they’re going to happen, and it makes it very rewarding,” Smythe says.

If hockey’s not your bag, there are other diversions From page one
The rodeo draws up to 80,000 visitors to the fairgrounds each May long weekend, including 20,000 rodeo spectators. “Over the past 65 years, I think they’ve faced everything that can happen, says Melenchuk. If hockey’s not your bag, there’s plenty of other diversions on hand. A thrilling roller derby exhibition, monster truck rides, a family movie night under the stars, and the West Coast Lumberjack Show are just a few of the attractions in store. There’s also the Fraser Valley’s largest midway, the new Extreme Zone, new features in the Kidz Zone, free music and entertainment at the outdoor entertainment stage and more. Small wonder Melenchuk describes the price of admission to the Country Fair as “It’s the best 12 bucks you can spend. This year’s free Sunday night concert is by Doug and the Slugs. Later, the Stetson Bowl hosts its first-ever free familyfriendly movie, How to Train Your Dragon, an animated contemporary classic showing at dusk. Check out the world famous Longhorn Saloon for great country music with long-time favourite Ken McCoy and Appaloosa, featuring a new vocalist, Langley’s Randi McMillan.
All that, and the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls in saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding and ladies’ barrel racing. For the first time this year, visitors will be able to buy tickets to rodeo performances and general country fair admission online at the Cloverdale Rodeo website. Adding a roller derby exhibition came together quite by accident – Melenchuk happened to be walking to his car after a board meeting when fate intervened. “I was the late one out of here for the evening. And there were a couple of young ladies all decked out in roller derby equipment who had parked next to me. Turns out, the team practices at the Cloverdale Curling Club next door to rodeo headquarters. “The bells went off in my head. Would you like to be part of rodeo? he asked. “Oh my god, we’d LOVE to! they replied. The Cowgirls and Rollerskates derby takes place May 21-22 at the Cloverdale Curling Rink, in a section called the Extreme Zone, which features BMX bike and skateboard demos, monster truck rides, and the West Coast Lumberjack Show – back after a hiatus. “It was just so popular, says Melenchuk. “It’s one of the
things that’s the roots of the country fair, and in B.C., logging is part of our heritage. Rides on the Re-Max hot air balloon will be available by donation at Millennium Amphitheatre Park. Last night, members of the B.C. Lions, the Felines cheer squad and rodeo stars were part of a kick off tailgate party at the Agriplex, an affair that replaced the opening night concert. “Traditionally, they’ve tried to do a kick off concert, to varying degrees of success. We’re going to do something a little bit different this year. There’s also lots to see and do in the historic town centre, which always revs up the rodeo spirit with events like the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade, Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. This year, check out more than 80 entries and 1,200 participants. Watch for vintage cars, horses, dancers, marching bands, community groups and so much more. If you need a lift to the fairgrounds, hop on a shuttle bus for a free ride to your destination throughout the weekend. Roller derby to rock the rodeo By Jennifer Lang The action-packed, full-contact sport of roller derby is a star attraction at this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo. B.C.’s only co-ed roller derby league, the Mainland Misfits, present Cowgirls and Rollerskates, a two-day derby May 21 and 22 at the Cloverdale Curling Club, the league’s home track. The Mainland Misfits are made up of two women’s teams, the Anarchy Angels and the Doomsday Bunnies, plus a men’s team called – tantalizingly – the Vancouver Murder. “We really want to build up our following and our fan base, and we really want people in the community to come out and join us,” says Fort Langley’s Tawnya Wood, co-captain of the Doomsday Bunnies. The sport is growing so quickly, it’s gone viral, with 19 B.C. leagues and growing. “People see it once and they want to come out and play, or they want to ref or they want to be nonskating officials,” says Wood. “It’s full contact, and very competitive. Also, people have a lot of fun,” says Wood, who skates by the moniker Tee Kayo. Teammates’ names include Boo T Slamma, Devoida Taste and Backstabbing Bettie, to name a few, while leaguemates the Anarchy Angels sport monikers like Mya Diction, Rolla Sassin and Mala Justid. Roller derby is theatrical, even kitschy. The colourful costumes are legendary, as are individual displays

on one another. “I’m not going to lie, when we were first thinking of merging, I wasn’t too sure,” she says. “It’s been so good for the sport. We’ve learned a lot from the men, and I think they’ve learned a lot from us.” In flat track derby, the track is flat (in this case, polished concrete), not banked. Players wear roller skates, elbow and knee pads, mouth and wrist guards, and helmets for protection. The rules are simple. Two teams take part in a bout. Each 30-minute half is broken into shifts called jams. The eight players at the front are called the pack and act as blockers. The two jammers – one from each team – take off after the pack once the whistle blows, trying to make it through.

Once past the pack, the jammers sprint ahead to catch up with the pack again. Jammers must complete a second lap in order to score points by passing opposing players, who, in turn, try to block their progress. “Roller derby is an incredibly strategic game,” Wood says. It’s also one of the fastest-growing sports in North America – and beyond. The players on Wood’s team run the gamut, from punk rockers to business executives, artists and homemakers aged 21 to 50. “Derby is a sport that embraces all shapes, all sizes and all athletic abilities. We are serious athletes – It isn’t about wearing fishnets. It isn’t about how you look.” The players train hard, focus on their sport and not the spectacle of roller derby, striving for empowerment, athleticism and fun while being active in the community. The physical challenge of the sport, the theatricality, individuality, and the chance to blow off steam in an accepting environment has huge appeal for women. “We are strong women. A lot of us have children. You go out, have a two-hour practice and you get some hits. It’s a hard workout. There’s nothing like this. Then you go home and you’re a great mom.” Saturday, May 21, there’s a men’s all star invitational from 1-3 p.m., followed by Public Frenemy vs. Doomsday Bunnies from 4-6 p.m. On Sunday, May 22, the Sea to Sky Sirens take on the Anarchy Angels from 1-3 p.m., with a coed all-star invitational closing out the derby from 4 to 6 p.m. Free with fairgrounds admission ticket. Look for the Mainland Misfits at the Cloverdale Curling Club – inside the Extreme Zone. The Misfits also present One Lump or Two, an Alice in Wonderland ‘Mad Hatter’ themed derby, June 4 at the Cloverdale Curling Rink, when they’ll host two teams from Vancouver’s Terminal City Rollergirls. Another bout is planned for July 16.

What’s that smell coming out of my dash vents?
Offensive odors coming from air conditioning vents seems to be a common problem as we start to use our air conditioning more frequently or as the weather gets warmer. Odors are not a new problem but rather they have been around for as long as automobile air conditioning has been around. The origin of the smell is caused by fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing inside the air conditioning evaporator core - a moisture laden environment favorable for these pests to grow. You can tackle the “odor” problems either mechanically or chemically. Basic deodorizers are available that you can apply yourself as a short term solution to the problem. Each vehicle manufacturer offers factory approved techniques and specialty solutions to remedy the long term problem. Call for an air conditioning consultation if you have any concerns.
Q A
I operate a business from my home, what expenses can I deduct for my home office? If you use part of your home for legitimate business purposes you can deduct a portion of your maintenance costs, utilities such as heat and electricity, property taxes, insurance, strata fees, rent, as well as the interest on the mortgage. In determining the portion of the expenses that you can claim as a deduction, you have to use a reasonable basis such as the area used for business purposes divided by the total area of your home. Please note that the Canada Revenue Agency usually applies a fairly strict standard in determining a reasonable deduction. You also may claim capital cost allowance (tax depreciation) on a portion on your home. However, I normally recommend against doing so as it will likely result in additional tax and complexity when you ultimately sell your home. For assistance with filing your personal or business taxes or if you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Q
Should I have my home inspected before selling it?
A
An inspection helps ensure that there are fewer surprises in a real estate transaction, because everyone involved becomes more familiar with the property’s current condition. A professional home inspection provided by the seller can create an atmosphere of good faith. By making repairs and disclosing to the prospective buyer the property’s condition up front, before negotiations begin, you can create a more relaxed atmosphere by instilling confidence regarding the home’s condition. This, in turn, may help your house sell faster and closer to listing price. Contact the Lunders for more information. Are you considering selling your home? Posture
Q A
I recently was told that poor posture can cause headaches. Is this possible? There are many causes of headaches however poor posture has been shown to be a contributing factor that can result in headaches. Consider a rounded stooped posture. The muscles of the chest are compressed and shortenened, the muscles in the upper back are lengthened and the muscles in the upper part of the neck are overactive and tight. This results in an imbalance of muscle tension and joint compression across the upper back and neck. Active muscle trigger points in the neck and upper back as well as poor alignment of the cervical and thoracic spine can cause headaches. PHYSIOTHERAPY SELF HELP MEASURES Posture - sleep with your neck and back in the midline position. Sleep on a firm mattress and ensure that your neck is well supported. Computer - the computer screen should be directly in front of you. Check that your back is well supported and that you are not slouching forwards. Core Stability - Strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the neck and back. This will enable you to maintain good posture for long periods of time. A Physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help relieve the pain.
