Three cheers for Canada’s best Lord Tweedsmuir’s cheerleaders claim top trophy By Jennifer Lang You know it’s a big deal when the trophy is actually larger than the smallest member of your team. Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers cheerleaders have proven they’re the best in the country, winning their division at the Canadian National Cheer and Dance Championships May 13-15 in Niagara Falls. The 19-member team delivered two, 2.5-minute routines, competing in the senior advanced division. Their achievement is particularly noteworthy when you consider they were up against strong competition in their division – and managed to overcome an unexpected injury during their final performance, when Alexandra Purgavie hyper-extended her knee and had to walk off the mat mid-routine. Her teammates carried on, delivering a flawless performance that earned them the gigantic championship trophy. “When the girls came off the mat, they burst into tears because they knew this was the last time they were

going to compete together,” Loretta Scott, the team’s staff liaison, said. Three cheerleaders are graduating and a fourth has been sidelined by a chronic injury that will prevent her from competing next year. The close-knit squad has been putting in 12 hours of practices a week since September, in addition to individual workouts for conditioning. Getting the massive trophy home proved another challenge. Air carrier Westjet said they had to check the award as baggage because it exceeded carry-on size restrictions. But when a baggage handler warned team captain Kelsey Boule their prize would be destroyed by other suitcases in the luggage area, the cheerleaders pleaded with a steward to let them bring it on board despite the rules. They carefully wrapped it inside team jackets and were allowed to store it in an overhead cabin compartment. The Canadian National Cheer and Dance Championship is the most prestigious cheer event in the country. It draws more than 300 teams from across North America.

A competitor takes a spill at the Mutton Bustin’ event.

By Boaz Joseph and Jennifer Lang Despite some rain and competing attention for Canucks playoff games, 77,000 people came out to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair on the weekend – up 5,000 visitors from last year. Of those, 15,000 headed over to see the rodeo. The 65th year of the Cloverdale Rodeo showcased the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls and had the second-richest payout of more than $360,000. The storyline of this year’s rodeo goes to the bulls, which managed to keep cowboys off their back with a vengeance. In fact, only Clayton Foltyn was able to stay on the bull for the statutory eight-second ride, giving him $50,000 for the final round and $54,300 overall.

The four-day event generated in excess of $5 million, directly and through economic spin-offs across Surrey and the Lower Mainland. Meanwhile, thousands of spectators turned out for this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo Parade.

An impressive 109 entries representing up to 1,500 participants took part in this year’s parade through downtown Cloverdale – one of the largest in rodeo history. “No matter what the weather is, there are people who are really loyal and really excited about the rodeo,” Cloverdale Business Improvement Association executive director Paul Orazietti said. “It truly is a community event. People love the rodeo,” he said. Saturday’s cool temperatures and rain clouds didn’t deter the crowds. People simply brought along their rain gear and umbrellas. “It is an incredible feeling when you see them lining up, no matter what the weather,” he said.

Canuck spirit in Cloverdale CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

ANOTHER FIRE For the second time in two weeks, Surrey firefighters raced to an RV park south of Cloverdale to put out a fire. Firefighters from at least six halls were dispatched to Hazelmere RV Park and Campground in the mid-afternoon of May 21 to deal with a fire that broke out in a fifth wheel trailer. No one was injured

and the cause of the fire at the 18843 8 Ave. scene remains under investigation, Surrey Fire Services Chief Ron Cross told Black Press. An investigation into the May 7 fire that caused extensive damage to another fifth wheel at the park is also ongoing.

The bizarre tale of Langley School District trying to get rid of a school site in an area that is bursting with children makes little sense. There is no question that a new school site is needed in the Yorkson neighbourhood, even with a new school now being built there. The new developments west of 208 Street will generate a large number of school children, and there is still much more developable land in the vicinity. To solve that problem, the district plans to swap a site it owns on 70 Avenue for another on 84 Avenue. Townhouses are now planned for the school site. The trouble is, a school is also needed in the Routley area. There are 500 school-aged children in the neighbourhood, and likely there will be more in the future, as land north of 72 Avenue is developed. The same scenario exists west of the 196 Street border in Surrey. Children in the new homes in

Yes, it would cause some new challenges in figuring out exactly who pays what portion of the costs at the new school, but ultimately, all funds for education come out of taxpayers’ pockets. The provincial government plays a bigger role in allocating education funds than it used to, so all that is needed to make a new school serving students in two districts happen is a little creativity. This is not simply a matter of fairness for families who bought homes in the area in good faith, knowing that a school was planned for the area. It is also a matter of ensuring that there is a new school in an area which is far from built out. If a new school serving students of two districts can be built sooner than one in each district, let’s consider doing so. – Frank Bucholtz is the editor of the Langley Times.

Palmiere mourned Hundreds turn out to remember the life of a beloved community member By Krista Waddington Johnston The Cloverdale Legion has seen its share of crowds, but on Saturday May 7 it was filled to capacity to celebrate the life of longtime employee and Cloverdale fixture Jessie Palmiere. Jessie passed away April 24, 2011 after a brave and valiant fight with cancer. With daughters Sandra and Tina, companion Larry MacGilliard and grandchildren Demi, Keelan and Brady looking on, Jessie was remembered with love and laughs by her friends, family, customers, and anyone who had the good fortune to know her and her smile. Jessie was born April 20, 1942 in Ituna, Saskatchewan amidst six sisters and four brothers. Being the adventurous spirit she was, she left home at an early age and lived in Yorkton and Regina before landing in Calgary in 1967 where she met and married Frank Palmiere on Feb. 24, 1969. November of that year their first daughter Sandra was born, followed by Tina in 1973 after their move to Vancouver. By 1974 the family had moved to Langley, where Jessie helped establish and co-chair the Nicomekl Elementary Parent Teacher Association. As well as raising her girls, Jessie ran the PTA, assisted the local Block Watch, ran the school’s hot lunch program, and

worked tirelessly to raise funds for the school’s new gym, kitchen and playground. She also successfully lobbied Langley city hall for funding for the school programs and equipment. Jessie’s can-do attitude was evident even back then: when something needed to be done she simply did it and moved on to the next thing. Jessie was a superb hostess who took care of every detail when people came to visit. Jessie made sure that everyone had a place to stay, food in their bellies and smiles on their faces. She was remembered as being a fantastic cook, bringing

Ask the Dentist! By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Lasers in Dentistry Q: My wife recently had LASIK eye surgery to correct her vision; the ophthalmologist commented they are now using LASERs in Dentistry to replace the needle and dental drill… Is this true, and if so, can the laser be used to complete a root canal? A: Yes, her eye doctor is correct. LASERs can now be used for both hard and soft tissue procedures in periodontal, restorative, surgical and endodontic applications. Lasers can even be used to help complete root canal treatments – for instance a dental laser does not replace the filing and shaping of the root canal, but does help with sterilization of bacteria in the canal prior to the final seal of the root filling. There are several types of LASERs being used in dentistry allowing many procedures to be done without injection anaesthesia or the use of a dental drill. Bleeding and postoperative inflammation are also reduced with the use of dental lasers – especially the new Erbium hard and soft tissue lasers that allow the dentist to modulate power (milliJoules) and frequency (Hertz) of the LASER light energy. The word LASER stands for Light Amplification Stimulated Emission Radiation. Dental LASERs utilize a non-ionizing, invisible light source in the near to mid infrared electromagnetic spectrum. Dental LASERs are gaining popularity because they are more conservative – in essence it is micro-dentistry, which treats one cell layer at a time. Using LASERs you create a secondary wound not a primary wound, sealing the lymphatic and nerve endings creating less postoperative inflammation and discomfort. Dental LASER light therapy reduces cross contamination and bacterial infections and at low level settings can be used to bio-modulate tissue and stimulate healing. With the new Hoya Versawave Erbium:YAG lasers there is now a proven anaesthetic effect, which allows most fillings to be performed without the need for injection anaesthesia – in other words NO NEEDLES! DOES THE LASER IMPROVE HEALING? Absolutely. The very nature of LASER light energy virtually eliminates heat at the surgical site causing less inflammation and pain. The LASERs unique ability to remove the smear layer on tissue causes less inflammatory response, which allows the body to begin healing immediately – without delay. IS THE LASER PAINFUL AND WILL IT HURT AFTERWARDS? NO, LASER procedures are not painful. LASERs are less invasive and more conservative than a typical scalpel blade so reduced physical damage to surrounding tissue results in less inflammation and markedly less postoperative pain and discomfort. DOES A DENTAL LASER PROCEDURE COST ANY MORE? No. The cost of a LASER generated filling or soft tissue procedure is NO different than the cost of the same procedure done with a dental drill or scalpel blade. However, when the LASER is utilized there is typically no needle required, or numb lip to deal with meaning less time spent in the doctor’s office and appointments are shorter. I personally had soft tissue surgery done to the inside of my upper lip with a LASER – without any freezing whatsoever. I can say with total confidence that LASERs work extremely well. If you are interested in LASER dentistry please don’t hesitate to call and book a FREE consultation in our office.

her famous perogies for anyone who requested a special treat. Her loving, thoughtful nature was often expressed with a bag of perogies at the ready for anyone who asked. Jessie was also an active and athletic lady. She bowled competitively in Langley and Cloverdale, though in 1975 she discovered she had a natural talent for softball. Her teammates from The Knights, Artisan, and Mom’s Kitchen (to name a few) remember her as a wicked third baseman until a car accident sidelined her from the hot corner. In typical “Jessie” fashion she defied the odds, not only walking against her doctor’s prediction, but returning to competitive play as a great pitcher. As expected, she was at the forefront of the fundraising until the team finally found a sponsor in her beloved Cloverdale Legion Branch 6, where she became an irreplaceable member of the legion family for 32 years. Softball was her sport of choice until she picked up a golf club and discovered yet another athletic passion. In fact, it was golf that brought her another blessing when she met Larry at a golf tournament in Quesnel in 1994. The two shared a passion for life, travelling and golfing throughout their

years together. With her children, grandchildren and Larry, Jessie’s life was just as she wanted: complete. After her cancer diagnosis in October 2008 she continued to work during her treatments, never complaining except to express her annoyance that it kept her from doing all she wanted to do. She faced her illness with her trademark strength and fortitude, yet her warmth and loving nature were never diminished. Four days after a very special birthday celebration, Jessie passed away in the early morning of April 24, Easter Sunday. As mentioned in her eulogy, the day seemed appropriate as an extraordinary lady left us on an extraordinary day. The very best of her remains in Sandra and Tina, both of whom share her kindness, energy and loving spirit. The Palmiere family would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their help and support. Jessie’s family and friends meant the world to her, and it was clear from the turnout on Saturday that the feeling was mutual. –The family would like to thank Krista Waddington Johnston for helping Tina and Sandra.

I Can See Clearly Spring showers bring May flowers, but let this be a reminder to also check and replace worn wiper blades. Poorly maintained windshield wipers can hamper visibility in poor weather. After a long winter of salt and other road residue on the windows, wiper effectiveness is greatly enhanced by cleaning the glass with a strong glass cleaner that can remove the oily film, don't forget the inside of the glass. Removing the film on the inside can help the defroster clear faster and reduce moisture build-up.
