Taking it downtown Participants run ‘Amazing Race’, meet writing deadline
By Jennifer Lang It was like something out of a reality TV show. Monday morning, roving teams of teachers from George Greenaway Elementary in Cloverdale took to the streets, clues in hand, as part of a special professional development day “Amazing Race”. Instructors and school staff had to solve clues to find 10 pit stops in the historic downtown, and perform a skill-testing task at each to win their next clue. Stops included the Clova Cinema, Surrey Museum, Cloverdale fire hall, seniors centre, library and other downtown landmarks. Their community newspaper was also on their list; teams had to write 100-word essays answering the question: Why is George Greenaway the best school in Cloverdale? They were then asked to deliver the breaking news to the editor. Somehow, the savvy teams all managed to locate the office of the Cloverdale Reporter, at 17586 56A Ave., Surrey, where some delivered essays that had already been written, and others got to experience

the task of deadline writing first hand. Essays were written on everything from recycled sheets of construction paper (complete with missing cut-off corners from unspecified, previous school projects) and narrow, grocery list-style notepaper to a more traditional lined sheet of foolscap. The award for “catchiest lede” might go to the team that started their essay with the grabby question: “Looking for a great school to send your kids? George Greenaway is the place.” See SUPPORTIVE / Page 3
Theft cuts Telus service Sixty metres of cable go missing in South Surrey An early morning cable theft in South Surrey Monday left about 380 residents without telephone service for more than a day. Telus spokesman Shawn Hall says at about 5 a.m. May 30, thieves stole about 60 metres of cable from poles along the 16400 block of 16 Avenue.
Crews were on site around the clock fixing the damage, and were able to restore service by Tuesday evening. There have been more than 100 incidents of cable theft affecting thousands of customers so far this year, Hall said. “Our concern is that
customers are without access to 911 and other telecome services until we can restore service, which is often a lengthy job due to the significant damage,” Hall said. “These thieves are putting our customers’ lives at risk.”

Supportive principal praised From front
It went on to describe a fun-filled staff, a location set in the heart of Cloverdale, and a nurturing environment for a range of students, from the musically inclined to budding athletes. The most heartfelt essay mentioned the school’s garden – created to honour a young student who passed away last year. The savviest essay described the school’s new principal, Mrs. Bertholm, as “amazing and extremely supportive” and concluded with the observation: “We love the Cloverdale Reporter.” Team Wood placed first; Team Tafreshi was second and Team Harris – otherwise known as GangGreen – was third.
Hopeful Waiting Waiting: initially, we might have primarily negative associations with this word. There are many things for which we wish time would go faster – a job raise, a school graduation, the birth of a child, an upcoming vacation - even Christmas gifts. Some waiting we’d like to avoid altogether: like waiting for the bus or waiting in traffic. Sometimes waiting is a sweet pleasure--anticipating the visit from a good friend; sometimes it’s dreaded, like an upcoming dental appointment. And then some events come along at just the right time. Although we may not always see it this way, how we wait - anxiously, calmly, or in eager anticipation - is something that we choose. One of the events Jesus Christ has told us to wait for is his return to this world. Hebrews 9:28 speaks of how “Christ will appear a second time…to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” As important as this event is, it rarely occupies our conscious thoughts. One man has been very busy with the anticipation of this event. Recently, Harold Camping got it quite wrong when he predicted Christ’s return on May 21st along with the subsequent end of the world on October 21st. Matthew 24:36 states that “no one knows about that day or hour…only the Father.” Indeed, there are signs that Christ is coming, as Matthew 24 tells us – wars, rumours of wars, famines, and earthquakes, such as are happening throughout the world. We cannot know when that day will come, but he has promised that it will happen. So what are you waiting for? And how are you choosing to wait? By Tamara VanDyke This column is sponsored by the

Gay lobbyists ‘forcing ideology’ on youth To the editor, I am writing to express my concerns regarding the hijacking of local anti-bullying campaigns by homosexual advocates and various forms of media. The hard work of many in our communities and schools to encourage an attitude of civility and respect for one another is to be commended, but the abuse of
these efforts by gay lobbyists to force their ideology on, specifically the youth, is something we should all be wary of. My wife and I parent our children to treat everyone with respect and to avoid any form of bullying. But to be against bullying should not be equated with a blind acceptance of all lifestyles, in this case homosexuality!
The Cloverdale
The youth, indeed all of society would be much better served by the schools educating students about many of the physical and mental perils that come with living a homosexual lifestyle. It’s time Canadians stood up to the bullying of the homosexual com-

Wendake, Que – A Huron-Wendat woman drummer wends her way between the Sagamité Restaurant brunch tables. Today – Mother’s Day – she has been given special permission to drum. Traditionally, drumming is exclusively a male role in the nation. Thump. Thump. The ancient sound is strangely unobtrusive – a subliminal reminder of time and place underlying the buzz of family chatter. Occasionally she pauses, encouraging children to inspect her drum. My brighteyed 7-year-old prairie grandson, Kaden, would have been there in a drumbeat. Eventually she wanders upstairs to greet visitors on the reception level of the four-star First Nations HotelMuseum. Nibbling on sturgeon, turbot, eel, a selection of hot entrees and an array of local cheeses, I admire the golden warmth of the massive timbers and totems. Another first for the Huron-Wendat Nation will be the staging of Shakespeare’s The Tempest by Robert Lepage (EX MACHINA) in the Wendake amphitheatre near the St. Charles River throughout July. Near the hotel (easily reached via a well used bike and jogging path) is Kabir Kouba Falls. This year’s run-off is particularly stunning pounding down 42 metres onto the rocks of the Canadian Shield. There are footpaths in the Parc de la Falaise along the river. The nearby woods house rich plant life, and (so I’m told) fossils dating back over 455 million years. Historically, the Huron-Wendat of Wendake (formerly called the Hurons of Lorette) hailed from the Georgian Bay region. In 1634, the Huron numbered between 20,000 and 30,000 people. However, by 1650, wars with the Iroquois,

BOXING’S BACK Live amateur boxing is returning to Cloverdale. Athletes from Port Kells Boxing Club will take on contenders from across the province, Saturday, June 11, rain or shine. The popular annual bouts take place in an outdoor ring set up in the parking lot at the Cloverdale branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at 17567 57 Avenue, Branch 6 publicity chair Ken Marjoram says. If it rains, the event will be held indoors. The bouts are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. No admission or tickets necessary. The bouts are free to watch. It’s presented by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 Cloverdale, the Port Kells Club and a host of local sponsors as a way to promote amateur boxing.

Close your eyes and you’d swear it was him. Big River, A Tribute to Johnny Cash, returns to Langley’s Cascades Casino next Friday, June 10. Big River is fronted by singer David Pittet, blessed with a remarkable voice that some say isn’t just like that deep, rumbling baritone of the late, great Man in Black. It almost is Johnny Cash. “It’s not only about the voice,” says Pittet. “It’s about living and breathing the man. His posture, his mannerisms, his moves, and his quirks. I want our audiences to go home feeling like they just observed the man himself.” Tickets at ticketmaster.ca. Big River also performs at Surrey’s Canada Day Celebrations July 1 at the Cloverdale Amphitheatre, along with headliners Trooper, Harlequin and Lisa Brokop. – Cloverdale Reporter

That’s Stephen in the stands The Surrey Eagles miss out on a national volleyball title, but get to meet the PM
By Jennifer Lang He may be the prime minister of Canada, but at a recent volleyball game in Calgary, Stephen Harper was just another parent sitting in the stands, cheering on his son, Ben. Not that it stopped the Ottawa Fusion coach from using Harper’s considerable political status to motivate the team at the bronze medal match against Surrey’s Eagles at the national volleyball championships. When the Fusion players were looking a little defeated during their second game against the U-15 Eagles, the Ottawa coach reminded them, “You’re playing in front of the freaking prime minister of Canada! Pick up your socks,” recalls local parent Lynne Robinson, who accompanied her son Mitchell’s team to the tournament. She also acted as scorekeeper, giving her a unique vantage point to observe the goings on at court level. After pulling out to an early lead, the Eagles lost their first game against Ottawa 23-25 before taking game two

25-18 – in spite of the opposing team’s motivational strategy. In game three, Fusion established an early lead that proved insurmountable to the Eagles, and they fell 15 to 9. Harper’s son was in the starting lineup, suggesting he’s a good athlete, says Robinson, who adds their team was impressive. Competing in Calgary was an intense and exciting experience for the Eagles, a U-15 B.C.

Volleyball Association team that practices out of Clayton Heights and Fraser Heights secondary schools. As B.C. silver medalists, the Eagles were ranked 9th going into the tournament, which featured the top 32
teams from across the country. The Eagles played nine hard-fought matches, including one against hometown rivals the Fraser Valley Blues, who’d beaten them in the provincials. This time, the Eagles soared,
winning the best of three, and guaranteeing them a top eight finish. A win in the quarter finals against Alberta Kings was followed by a loss to the tourney hosts, Calgary Canucks, sending the Eagles into the bronze medal match against Ottawa Fusion. Player Mitchell Robinson was named to the all star team for the tournament – meaning he was one of only six players from across the country singled out for the distinction. After the match, the team posed for a photo with the prime minister. “And the whole thing was an experience they will likely tell their grandchildren about,” says Lynne Robinson. “It’s not every day you get to meet the Prime Minster, let alone play in front of him.”

FLOWER POWER
The sight of newly-planted geraniums, impatiens, marigolds and begonias helped usher in spring at Cloverdale’s Zion Park Manor. The flowers were planted in containers on the residence’s top deck May 4, thanks to a gardening crew comprised of students from Clayton Heights Secondary School’s Project Equal club as part of its Earth Day activities. One of the club’s main goals is to reach out to the community; members often serve food at the Surrey Urban Mission. They thought a spring flower planting work party would be a fun, communityoriented event.

Why should I choose your Martial Arts school, and how do I assess it? We offer many programs, and we want you to see our facility. So, we believe it is important that - just like at school - you meet the instructors in person. So come in and check us out! Ask about our free introductory class. We want you - or your child - to have every opportunity to find the individual program that suits you, and to feel comfortable. Talk to others training here, or whose children train with us. Martial Arts is a sport you may be involved in for years, perhaps a lifetime. We believe - and have found that friendships are formed through a family oriented school. Q A
How do I become a successful real estate investor? The best way to make a profit in real estate is to invest in a revenue property for the long term. Revenue properties present the least amount of risk. When it comes to purchasing a revenue property, I suggest the following:
Co-Q-10 (Ubiquinone) should I take Co-Q-10 and which Q When form of Co-Q-10 works best?
is known that cholesterol lowering drugs A It(statins) deplete our bodies of CoQ10 which is essential for muscle function. People taking statin drugs may develop muscle soreness and weakness. Bear in mind the heart is also a muscle. So by taking statin drugs to save the heart you might in fact weaken the heart muscles. If you are on statin drugs, take CoQ10 100 mg a day to prevent this side effect. The Vitaline 400 mg and the Enzymatic Therapy brand of Smart Q 10 are chewable forms that are proven to penetrate the cell membrane and the blood-brain barrier better than the water soluble or oil suspension preparations.
• Buying a property within a 10 kilometer radius of where you live • Buying a property in which the rent covers the mortgage • Having at least 2 month rent in reserve • Holding onto the property for a minimum of 5 years Folks usually run into trouble when they make a purchase to flip right away or buy on contract for a product not built yet with the intent to make a fast gain. That type of investing can be quite risky. Stick to the rules above and you will be on the right track to becoming a successful real estate investor.

I’m going to be buying my son a laptop for school next year. Any suggestions? Yes, #1 buy a 14” screen or smaller. These small size laptops are a whole lot more portable and easier for him to lug around. Also a bigger screen is much easier to break. We’ve seen cracked screens caused by responsible kids stacking books on a bigger screen. #2 Keeping his laptop cool with a soft, no plug or power cooling pad is not only going to add longevity to your active son’s laptop but it will be easier for him to carry and use as opposed to a plug-in laptop cooler. #3 A good quality, soft carrying bag. Good quality doesn’t mean expensive either! What about brands? We’re suggesting Acer, Asus, MSI, Dell, and Apple (You can now install Windows on the newer Apple) but try and stay away from HP. (HPs have been poor quality lately) What do you carry? We usually have a healthy selection of new, used, re-certified & reconditioned notebooks ready to go at great prices! Do you still have your pick up and delivery service? Yes, we do and free for seniors!

Q
I filed my personal tax return in April, but I forgot to include some deductions, what should I do?
A
If you need to change a tax return that you have already sent in or electronically filed with the Canada Revenue Agency (“CRA”), do not resend or refile the corrected return. Once you have received your notice of assessment from the CRA for the year, you can request a change to the return in one of a couple of different ways. First, you can complete a T1-ADJ “T1 Adjustment Request” form and send it and the supporting documentation for the entire claim to the Surrey Tax Centre. Second, if you have already registered with the CRA to have electronic access to your account, you can simply make the changes to your return online using the CRA’s “My Account” feature. It typically takes two to three months for the CRA to process the adjustment. For assistance with filing your personal or business taxes or if you have any other tax related questions, please contact me at your convenience.
