Martin noted managers can already ban smoking temporarily when fire hazards are high. Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said Metro would have to start banning some food from picnic baskets if it wants to block all unhealthy activities in parks. “The only difference between a cigarette and a French fry is the cigarette has the ability to affect others,” he said. Surrey Coun. Marvin Hunt said it would be simplest to leave the exact placement of no-smoking zones or designated smoking areas to Metro parks managers, adding

Comments ‘hateful’, ‘shocking’ To the editor; Re: “Gay lobbyists ‘forcing ideology’ on youth,” June 10 Reading Mike Schouten’s letter to the editor, lately a candidate for the Christian Heritage Party in our last federal election, both amazed and shocked me. His ability to basically state bullying is bad, especially those homosexual bullies, amazed me. He seems to be stuck in that us and them world; us the good and them the bad. His comments try to validate homosexuals as different, not equal, prone to physical and emotional perils. His comments are hateful. I am shocked that as a front man for the policies of the Christian Heritage Party and no doubt a follower of Jesus he has forgotten that his God would love thy neighbour as thyself, and that only God judges. Maybe if he taught his children that all are brothers and sisters and all are made in the image of his God there would be less need for anti-bullying classes in the first place. Frank Britton Surrey

To the editor

FILE

As part of a Red Cross anti-bullying initiative, Frank Hurt Secondary students took part in a video project showing how bystanders can intervene in a bullying situation.

I nearly choked on my dinner! To the editor; I am writing in response to the letter, “Gay lobbyists forcing ideology on youth” by Mike Schouten. My word, I nearly choked on my dinner!

Bullying is horrific! If you are brave and passionate enough to fight against it, then more power to you and kudos too! Sexual orientation does not matter here, I’m still trying to figure out why the heck it ever

would? And as for “forcing ideology”, we could look in a few history books, including our own, as to the effects that religion has had on most of the indigenous peoples across the globe, especially

the ones that have lost their land, their language and their identities. Just saying. Robin Handley Surrey

Let’s stand up to religious bullies Open letter to Mike Schouten: I can understand parents wishing to delay sexual information to young children, but in light of the increased number of suicides of bullied gay youth and murders of gay youth by their straight peers, I cannot understand your concerns of the inclusion of a homosexual component in anti-bullying campaigns. Your belief that homosexuality is something to be chosen is dictated by your choice to lead a religious lifestyle, but has no more truth than you chose to be heterosexual. Sexual orientation is no more a choice than the natural color of your hair. Lifestyle is akin to the clothing you choose to wear. Sure, you can try on different colors, but your natural color will always come forth. With the exception of some women who have suffered abuse at the hands of men, most if not all male and female homosexuals know they are homosexual by the time they are 5 or 6. Their teachers, principals and parents can

also see this expression at this early age, and science has even hinted at hormonal involvement in early pregnancy. Why on earth would someone choose to live a life that is attacked on a daily basis by bigots like yourself? The answer is that it is not a choice, and the only ‘perils’ of being a homosexual are the same for any human on the planet: disease spread through unprotected sex, and abuse by those driven by fear of something they don’t or are unwilling to understand. There are women on this planet subjected to great degrees of abuse for the simple fact that they are women. Are they expected to withstand that intolerance forever? Canadian women finally stood up to this intolerance and have been gaining equality ever since, much to the chagrin of some men. I do wish that blatant sexuality portrayed in media was far more controlled and limited, but heterosexuality is the leader of such ad-

The Cloverdale

vertising, and it would do you well to remember that homosexuals come from heterosexual parents. Canadians and humans all over this planet need to stand up to the bullying of the religious communities that try to force all of us to not only tolerate, but to accept and even celebrate their choice to practice a completely unnatural lifestyle of blind devotion and exclusion. When God is asked to grant courage, love, acceptance, strength and more, God does not give these things to us. God grants us the opportunity to find within ourselves the courage, love, acceptance, strength and more that we feel we are lacking. I pray that one day all hearts will be open to the multitude of opportunity with which one can aspire to their higher self. Gwen Valentic-Morrison Surrey

PILE UP A medical problem may have caused a multiple vehicle crash on Highway 10 near the Surrey-Langley border that sent two men to hospital with serious injuries last week. Shortly after 6 p.m. June 2, an eastbound Chevy pickup truck driving by a 63-year-old Langley man hit a Honda Prelude, also driven by a 63-year-old man, sending the car into a lamp standard at 188 St.

News in brief The Chevy then ran a red light, hit a Nissan Exterra SUV driven by a 41-year-old Surrey woman. A fourth vehicle, a Ford Taurus, driven by a Langley man, 21, was also hit. Initial reports suggest the Chevy driver may have passed out at the wheel due to a medical condition. He was taken to hospital with serious injures, along with the driver of the Prelude. The drivers of the two other vehicles escaped with less critical injuries. The pile-up closed the Highway 10-Langley Bypass route between 188 and 192 Streets for several hours.

Few smokers use parks anyway: MacLean From page one

that has been Surrey’s practice. Calendino said the parks committee was “waffling” by not proceeding with a full ban. A final decision will go to a vote of the full Metro board in the months ahead, where Vancouver councillors could still try to push through a full ban. “We’re very much in favour of a complete prohibition,” Stevenson said. “We feel it’s like an airplane – you head to a park, you don’t smoke any more.” Vancouver is one of several cities in the region that already bans smoking throughout

its civic parks and he said Metro needs to follow suit to make a health statement. More of the remaining smokers might be spurred to quit if parks go off limits, he added. “I feel understanding for senior citizens who maybe got off the battlefields smoking but maybe they need to quit too.” MacLean said few smokers use parks anyway. “It’s hard to walk when you smoke a pack or two a day,” he said. Any rules could follow in the vein of some other cities in the region and cover not just tobacco smoking but also marijuana and

hookah pipe use in parks. The committee rejected a staff recommendation to go out to public consultation on multiple options, including a complete ban. Martin said Metro will not ban campfires at Metro-run campgrounds. Langley Township Coun. Mel Kositsky said the smoking in parks issue should be regulated in all areas by the provincial government, rather than leaving a patchwork quilt of differing regulations in each city as well as the Metro parks. Different rules in different parks confuses residents who travel across civic boundaries,

he said, adding there are similar problems with differing regulations to prevent metal theft and restrict pesticide use. Any new Metro policy that rolls out would affect areas like Tynehead, Campbell Valley, Pacific Spirit, Lynn Headwaters and Belcarra regional parks as well as greenways such as Pitt River and Seymour River. Beaches governed by Metro Parks include Centennial Beach at Boundary Bay Regional Park, Wreck Beach in Vancouver and Sasamat Lake in Belcarra. In all, Metro runs 22 regional parks as well as four greenways. – Black Press

Shelters bracing for a mountain of kittens It’s June, and already SPCA shelters across B.C. are bracing for a flood of young, furry felines. People who Lorie Chortyk work in animal welfare commonly refer to it as the “mountain of kittens” – an annual influx of kittens that starts in May and continues throughout the fall. Surrey-based Royal Canadian Theatre Company is looking for a new home. Managing artistic director Ellie King says the company is looking for 5,000 square feet of warehouse space or something similar – free or “very affordable. The troupe is a registered charity. It needs the space to build and store scenery and other items used for productions. The company is perhaps best known for its popular Christmas pantomimes, which feature community members alongside professional actors. This year’s panto is the Sword in the Stone. The group used to have affordable warehouse space in Cloverdale – inside the now defunct Cloverdale Mall at 5710 175 Street. The site is being redeveloped.
