Young scientist harnesses raindrops By Jennifer Lang Inspiration can come from anywhere. For Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics, it was an apple falling from a tree that helped him better understand gravity. In Tyler Tardi’s case, it struck one rainy day while he was watching an item about turbines and electricity on the Discovery Channel’s science show, Daily Planet. Tardi happened to look outside at a drainpipe leading from the roof of the shed. “There was water flying out of the gusher and I thought, if I put a turbine in the gusher, I could generate electricity,” says Tardi, back from the 2011 Canada Wide Science Fair in Toronto, where he picked up a silver medal for

Tardi then took the dimensions of the roof of their house and calculated how much rain falls on the roof in order to figure out how much power can be saved. It turns out an average sized home roof in Cloverdale using his R.E.D. would have to run 340 hours a year in order to save two cents in home electricity costs. The savings are small, but Tardi believes it’s got potential.

his Rain Energy Device, or R.E.D. The Grade 7 Sunrise Ridge Elementary student was one of eight students from the region, including five Surrey kids, who attended the national science fair, a week-long competition for students in Grades 7 to 12. His “Go Green with R.E.D.” project proved it’s possible to harness rain energy by directing rainwater onto a waterwheel placed inside a drain pipe. To test his hypothesis, he took a 25-litre reservoir to ensure there was ample water pressure, drilled a hole in the bottom, filled it with water and attached different pipe lengths to see which one would generate the most energy. He measured the electrical output with a multimeter, which showed how many volts

Ladies, without you, I’m not sure the Cloverdale Legion would still be here,” he said, eliciting a spontaneous round of cheers from the male members of the colour party gathered in the square. “Hip, hip, hooray!” They cheered.

Three cheers for the L.A. By Jennifer Lang A colour party from the Cloverdale Legion marched over to Hawthorne Square on 176 Street Tuesday morning for a special ceremony. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 Ladies’ Auxiliary presented the City of Surrey with a large, flower-filled planter in recognition of the legion’s 85th anniversary. Coun. Linda Hepner was on hand to thank the auxiliary for the commemorative gift – and to express gratitude on behalf of council for 85 years of service to the community. “I know how important the Legion is and the Ladies Auxiliary organization is to the community,” Hepner said, pointing to her own long-standing involvement with the Royal Canadian Legion in her home province of New Brunswick and status as the daughter of a veteran. “You’re a great asset to the community,” she said. “I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done.” The Ladies’ Auxiliary has been around just as long as the Legion – 85 years. Both groups raise funds for the community, distributing thousands of dollars each year. Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 second vice president Earl Fraser also spoke from the heart, describing how the auxiliary came to the branch’s financial assistance during a particularly lean year during his tenure as president.

The cold harsh light of day To the editor; The damage is done, clean up begins. From the streets to our reputations we will be trying to rebuild what was selfishly taken from us by those who forgot we live in the day and age of high tech. People hurt – some severely. Cars destroyed. Businesses ransacked. Minor damage. Major damage. Millions in damage. Faces caught. It will take some time but we will survive this. But right now, it stings like a million scorpions crawling inside my heart (and yes my heart is big enough to hold a million scorpions). The tears have

flowed and continue to do so. My heart is broken. I’m ashamed and embarrassed and yet I’m an innocent, hockeyloving bystander caught up in the B.S. caused by others who lack class, respect and a true love of the game. Try as they might to justify it as heartache from the loss of a cup we all so desperately wanted in our city, there is nothing that is so important to destroy the city you claim to love and where your team plays – except for your freedom – which has now been forfeited. We can try to blame it on alcohol, drugs, emotion, mob mentality as much as we like but in the cold, harsh, light of day it boils

down to one thing – stupidity. Without being afflicted with that disease people can control their alcohol consumption, their drug abuse, emotions and are self aware enough to know the actions that happened last week were just wrong. All this over a cup? I hate that this has tarnished the game even more. I hate that it has tarnished our city. I hate that when it’s talked about it’s “Vancouver” did this, “Vancouver” did that. No, Vancouver didn’t. And I really hate that it has tarnished the win by a well deserving team who fought just as hard as ours did to earn the cup but indeed succeeded with the task. Where is the shame? Whose

To the editor; Left quite cynical and disappointed as a young man in 1994 after the squeaker defeat of the Canucks by the Rangers, I experienced an irrepressible notion that I had just watched the closest that the Canucks would ever come to winning the Stanley Cup. Thus, my mind, preoccupied with my own formidable worries, held virtually no hope for Game 7; and I, unlike so very many Canada Line riders (many of whom yahooed, and almost all of which wore Canucks jerseys), held little hope of a happy ending to that Vancouver night: For it was during the train ride to Bridgeport SkyTrain Station that I overheard some late-teens or very young adult males mentioning breaking glass and looting, all of which left me more assured than ever that there very possibly would be a repeat of the ’94 riot or worse. Indeed, the cliché-to-be that the rioters were “not [true] Canucks fans but rather just hooligans planning trouble all along” will definitely be quite true.

The true fans helped clean mess To the editor; My name is Nalin Dhillon, and I am making an attempt to clear up part of Vancouver’s now shameful reputation. I am a proud Vancouverite, and while I was hoping for a Stanley Cup victory, I was still appalled at the riots which occurred last Wednesday night. I wanted to point out that these were definitely a minority of hooligans who do not

represent the city well. The true fans in fact were the ones who remained in Rogers Arena even after the game ended, gave the Canucks a standing ovation, and even cheered for Tim Thomas when he received the Conn Smythe trophy. In addition, thousands of Canuck supporters and genuine Vanouverites showed up

This past May, the Cloverdale Legion hosted its annual Tricycle Races during Rodeo Week.

“The idea is when you get more active with the legion, you help raise funds for the community, Redekop says. Along with supporting veterans and their families, the Cloverdale legion and the Ladies’ Auxiliary have always helped local youth, charities, hospitals, seniors homes and needy families. The Cloverdale Legion disburses as much as $100,000 a year in charitable funds in the community, from hospital foundations to scholarships and bursaries for seven high schools and other worthy causes. Membership hit a high of more than 2,100 in

1996 and currently sits at around 1,700, making it the sixth largest in Canada. Current membership in the Cloverdale Legion Ladies Auxiliary sits at around 42. Nevertheless, the ladies auxiliary gives away an average of $50,000 in donations each year to the hospital foundation, and in scholarships and student bursaries. Nationally, the Canadian Legion does advocacy work for veterans, while provincial command supports a veterans transition program through a partnership with the University of British Columbia that helps service men and women who are returning home from active duty. “Right now, people don’t know who we are, they don’t know where we are, Redekop says, inviting people to come find out for themselves on Saturday. “They don’t know what we do. These days, you don’t have to be a veteran to join; Branch 6 offers associate and affiliate memberships. Membership has its benefits – literally, from savings on cable TV packages to BCAA membership discounts and other goodies. The familiar one-story building at 17567 57 Avenue is merely the branch’s latest home. Meetings were first held in a shiplap and tar paper shack, then later at A.J. Burrows store in Cloverdale. The third home, a large, two storey hall built in 1947 to house a booming post Second World War membership, burnt down in 1956. It was rebuilt the following year. An auditorium and kitchen were later add-ons. The building underwent a major overhaul in 1997 that modernized the look of the lounge, replacing dark panelling with a lighter paint job and adding windows to let in natural daylight. The new legion hall is the cornerstone of phase one of the City of Surrey’s redevelopment plans for the old Cloverdale Mall site. On Saturday, there will also be a video presentation outlining redevelopment plans for the new legion. – The open house is June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

He figures with further optimization, his innovation may help offset the cost of having to buy electricity or could be used to run mechanical things during peak hours of electricity use. As the school year draws to a close, he’s already working on ways to improve his concept. Attending the Canada Wide Science Fair is something of a family tradition; when his older brother Jordan attended the competition, he earned two honourable mentions, sparking the younger sibling’s interest in coming up with a battle plan to get there one day himself. Good thing it rained. Strict rules were in place at the Canada Wide Science Fair; flowing water wasn’t allowed. So he brought a DVD video demonstration along instead. His project was assessed by 13 different judges. There was time for sightseeing beyond the competition. The group visited the CN Tower, and participated in a science chase involving different challenges to solve. By the end of the week, the B.C. team members were all fast friends, despite the age gaps. Another local student, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary’s Sarah Gordon, returned home with a bronze medal, $300, and two $1,000 entrance scholarships to the University of Ottawa and the University of Western Ontario. Gordon, a Grade 12 student, is also a talented athlete; just last week she was named

She created a theoretical design of a home that combines existing technologies to enable patients to live independently longer. Along with a silver medal, Tyler earned $700 and a $2,000 entrance scholarship to the University of Western Ontario. University is still a long way off. He plans to become an electrical engineer. Surprisingly, considering the rainy, cool weather that plagued the Lower Mainland this spring, Tyler doesn’t really have a strong opinion either way on the subject of rain. “I don’t mind rain,” he says, smiling – and no doubt thinking of the energy potential that’s just waiting to be harnessed.

The longer season means thousands of jobs in the Fraser Valley and across the province have been saved, Doug McCallum, CEO of Harness Racing B.C., said. The association represents harness racing drivers, standardbred horse breeders and others. McCallum said the backstretch at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino is brimming with new energy and ideas, as word spreads that the longer season has been reinstated. There has already been a 10 to 15 per cent increase in the standardbred breeding industry, he said. Soon, the association plans to start encouraging new drivers and trainers to come out to B.C. for the 10-month season. – Cloverdale Reporter

More details have been announced about the upcoming harness racing season at Fraser Downs. Live racing returns Friday, Oct. 7, ushering in the fall racing calendar with 31 race days. Twelve of those will be Friday night race cards, and one Friday matinee – the Nov. 11 Breeders Classic. There will also be six Saturday race days, 11 Sunday races and the Dec. 26 Boxing day matinee. The details come following an earlier announcement that the 10-month season horsemen and their supporters had been calling for will be reinstated in 2012. The provincial government has also agreed to reinstate six of 12 conditional dates in the fall 2011 racing calendar. Those Saturday races fall on Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29, and on Nov. 5 and 15, bringing the total number of race days this year to 76.

A public funeral service is planned for Saturday in Port Coquitlam to remember the life of a tireless crusader for cancer research, Betty Fox. The mother of the late Terry Fox passed away peacefully June 17. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., June 25 at Trinity United Church. A book of condolences has been made available at the Port Coquitlam recreation complex at 2150 Wilson Ave. to the end of June.

People may also express their condolences online at www.terryfox.org. Terry died on June 28, 1981, after he was forced to halt his crossCanada Marathon of Hope. With no time to grieve, Betty accepted a role in developing the Terry Fox Run, which later evolved into The Terry Fox Foundation, according to a statement on the foundation’s website. She was involved in all aspects of the foundation, ensuring her son’s name never became too commercialized, and spoke to an estimated 400,000 school children over 25 years touring the

country. She’d end every speech with the words: “Never, ever give up on your dreams.” Born in Manitoba, Betty was active and athletic growing up. She married Rolland Fox in 1956. A decade later, the family moved West to Surrey, B.C., and later settled in Port Coquitlam, before moving to Chilliwack in 2003. Betty is survived by husband Rolly, three children Fred, Darrell and Judith, and their spouses, and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Terry Fox Foundation. – Cloverdale Reporter

Adventures

Your children need your HELP!

“Riding in your car is so interesting,” boomed a voice from the backseat. While his wife, Lea, and I chatted, her husband, Deryck, conveniently ignored us happily surfing brochures on India, Okanagan wineries, and an impressive hardcover, Canada’s National Parks – A Celebration. Panic strikes me – in the air or on the ground – if books or magazines aren’t within easy reach. The car is no exception. Currently, my mobile library includes Adventures in Solitude by Grant Lawrence, Everyday Eden by Christina Symons, A Year on the Garden Path by Carolyn Herriot, and the tablehopper’s guide to dining and drinking in San Francisco by Marcia Gagliardi. My son once headed for White Rock, decided it was a great day for a drive, and wound up on his grandparents’ doorstep in Alameda, California. One has to Ursula Maxwell-Lewis be prepared. The current “Vanity Fair” (the Kate and William one), and The Sinai Secret by Greg Loomis should keep me (or anyone else) entertained should I decide to roam. Grant Lawrence’s book, subtitled “What Not to Wear to a Nude Potluck”, is an entertaining series of rollicking sketches of his Desolation Sound adventures. Thirty years ago his dad – to the horror of his city-slicker family – bought “boat access only” Desolation Sound property. Clearly, over the years, Lawrence and his pals have added their brand of history to as much of the 6,350 acres of shoreline and 14,000 acres of high land as time, energy and ingenuity allowed. In 1973 the government designated the area Desolation Sound Marine Park, but this easy summer read proves some of the mainland

interlopers have added the colour. Major gardening is a thing of the past for me, but I can still dream. A Year on the Garden Path, the perfect gift for any gardener, is an easy to follow, informative, year-round planting guide. For me, advice on hanging baskets was particularly useful. Sprinkled with recipes, poems and gift ideas, I was delighted with the amount of information packed into this handy little book. A book for any season, indeed. Although, at first glance, Everyday Eden seems more of a coffee table book, closer inspection proves its versatility and value. This summer, thanks to Christina’s advice, I’m experimenting with what she calls “Mini Eden”. Armed with sheet moss, seeds, potting soil and a fish bowl I’m intrigued to see what will materialize. The chapter on succulent sculpture has my attention, and the “Tablescapes” chapter is book-marked for special occasions. Whimsy interwoven with practical ideas is my idea of a truly naturally useful book. Marcia Gagliardi and I chanced to meet in San Francisco last month at Pow Wow, a U.S. travel conference. An enthusiastic marketing bundle of energy, Marcia is known locally as The Tablehopper. Armed with a red Alpha Romeo and a notepad, her insight into Bay area eating places – from Gays on the Town to All in the Family – the data gleaned for her tablehopper’s guide to dining and drinking in San Francisco is impressive, compact and easy to follow. An iPhone is app is in the works, but meantime check this handy little book out at www.tablehopper.com. Local bookstores carry most of the books mentioned. But if you run into trouble finding one let me know at utravel@shaw.ca. Happy summer reading! – Ursula Maxwell-Lewis retired as Managing Editor of the Cloverdale Reporter to read, write and wander.

What are AFAs? AFAs are a unique, patented skincare technology based on the amino acids of your skin’s natural moisture system. This Technology produces results quickly without the harsh dryness and irritation. KIM BRAR How AFAs works? AFAs work in three ways: exfoliation, hydration and anti-oxidation. The typical irritation experienced with exfoliation is balanced by natural hydration and the anti-inflammatory qualities of antioxidation.
