Surrey, let your Canada Day pride shine By Jennifer Lang It’s not bragging if it’s true: tens of thousands of Surreyites are going to raise a little hell on Canada Day, thanks to legendary rock band, Trooper. For those not in the know, Trooper is responsible for some of the nation’s best-loved and most singable songs, from the uniquely Canadian call to action, “Raise a Little Hell,” to the ultimate ode to a sunny afternoon on the nation’s rainy Wet Coast, “We’re Here for

Surrey’s July 1 festivities are Western Canada’s largest Canada Day celebration, drawing more than 100,000 people to the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre at 176 St. and 64 Ave. for a free, day-long event filled with live music, family-friendly activities, food, and cultural events, capped off with a fireworks display, all hosted by the City of Surrey. since the Thompsons set up the practice in 2000. Pekoe has Type A blood, which makes him a good match for about 95 per cent of all domestic cats in North America. Very infrequently – just a few times a year – he’s called upon to donate a small amount of blood (no more than 60 ml) when a feline patient has suffered a violent trauma or is in an acute medial emergency. When not saving lives, his main job has been to mingle with the other cats and their owners in the waiting room. The Pet Heroes producers were hooked. “Once the decision was made, I was surprised at how quickly it happened,” Jim said. They flew out and interviewed Jim, Susan,

and the owner of a feline patient whose life was saved, thanks to Pekoe. They also took footage of Nicholas, the grey shorthair with aquamarine eyes who’s replaced Pekoe as the Cats at Home mascot. They stayed overnight in Cloverdale, then went to Telegraph Cove to cover the story of another pet hero: a dog who’s a seeing eye dog for another pooch who lost both eyes in an accident. Pekoe’s role as a cancer survivor may be even more heroic than his track record as a blood donor. When they asked Susan what makes Pekoe a pet hero, she responded, “We’re showing people that we’ve had a kitty that had adversity throughout his life and is still surviving, and we can show people that this is a kitty that’s had cancer and this is how he’s doing.”

Premier Christy Clark, who won the Liberal leadership in February, has said she wants a mandate from the public, but has yet to indicate when an election would be called. The NDP has already started getting candidates ready. Last week, former B.C. NDP leader Carole James announced she plans to run again in her Victoria seat. Falcon’s 2010 Beans ‘n Jeans event was held in September.

Election in the air? Word that Kevin Falcon’s annual “Beans ‘n Jeans” fundraiser is set for July 9 is helping fuel rumours of a B.C. election as early as September. As in previous years, the MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale’s annual westernthemed barbecue is hosted by Conservative Senator Gerry St. Germain at his Indian Springs Ranch in South Surrey. A who’s who of Falcon’s Liberal caucus colleagues from the Fraser Valley and beyond are sure to be there, along with federal Tories, with crowds reaching upwards of 800. Last week, reports surfaced that staffers for both the B.C. NDP and the B.C. Liberals have been asked to finish vacations before mid-August,

Opinions We need to discuss the Patullo

URSULA MAXWELL-LEWIS PHOTO

Canada: where our hearts are

To the editor; There has been a great deal of concern over the last six moths that there was to be a change in the Government (and TransLink) view on the solution to replacing or refurbishing of the 74 year old Pattullo Bridge connecting Surrey with New Westminster. In the fall of 2010, it was learned that the Department of Transportation had asked TransLink to review its plans for the crossing and investigate whether or not refurbishing the span would be a satisfactory alternative to building a new bridge. For quite a long time now, it appeared that there was no alternative to replacement being considered, and when the request came to light, there was considerable concern that a less than satisfactory conclusion would be decided ie; not to replace the bridge.

Subsequently, TransLink has announced that the only viable solution would be to replace the bridge, however there is still some concern that they may opt for a four lane span rather than the six lane structure that many agree is the appropriate solution to now and future needs. There is still some discussion as to how the bridge would be paid for, so the Surrey Board of Trade can wait until an overall funding position for TransLink is determined before taking a position on that. The Surrey Board of Trade, as Surrey’s business organization endorses and supports the construction of a new, six lane bridge to replace the old span. Outdoor burning ban issued in Surrey Dry conditions and warmer summer temperatures prompted the City of Surrey to enact an outdoor burning ban late last week. The Surrey Fire Chief has cancelled all burning permits and is prohibiting all types of outdoor fires until further notice. Charcoal barbecue in city parks and on city beaches are also prohibited. The move followed an open burning ban enacted in the Coastal Fire Region due to drying weather conditions. The City of Surrey offered the following tips to help prevent fires – while enjoying the hot weather: ■ Dispose of smoking materials properly and ensure they are completely extinguished ■ Remember to never leave barbecues unattended, and make sure they’re properly turned off after you’re finished using them ■ Teach children the dangers of playing with or lighting fires ■ Make sure bottles and any broken glass you find outdoors are disposed of properly; they can magnify the sun’s rays and start a wildfire. Ask the Dentist How to best straighten crooked teeth….

By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Q: My daughter is 16 years old with very crooked teeth. She is a beautiful, outgoing young lady but self-conscious about her crooked smile. I am afraid if I don’t have her teeth straightened it could impact her self-confidence and the way others perceive her. I’ve heard there are new technologies to help straighten teeth without the need for metal braces. What exactly are my options? A: You are correct when you say a crooked smile can have a dramatic impact on her interaction with others; this is a known fact. It can also create difficulty in proper brushing and flossing; can lead to tooth decay; abnormal wear on teeth/tooth mobility; tension in chewing muscles; clicking and popping in jaw joints; headaches and TMJ pain. Not to mention accumulation of plaque and calculus – which leads to gum disease and eventually bone loss and lack of tooth support... You are making the correct decision to help your daughter straighten her teeth. In recent years an alternative to metal braces called Invisalign has become popular with teenagers and adults. It helps patients of all ages feel confident in their smiles and themselves. The Invisalign system is actually a series of clear plastic virtually invisible aligner trays, which gradually move teeth to achieve a great smile and proper bite. By using a series of clear, removable aligners that are changed about every 2 – 3 weeks, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth towards the smile you’ve always wanted. The aligners are made of a hard clear plastic and are removable, allowing easy brushing and flossing for proper hygiene. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and cleanings become easier since the aligner trays are popped out for improved access – quicker, faster, more thorough visits. This is the single biggest advantage over metal braces because often accumulation of plaque and calculus around standard brackets can lead to decalcification of surrounding teeth and appearance of unsightly white decalcification spots on

teeth. Another distinct advantage is that removable trays make an active lifestyle easier to accommodate. When you are playing sports or an instrument there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums. IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES? In the hands of a skilled practitioner and when worn according to doctors recommendation, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment. HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEARING HIS OR HER ALIGNERS? Teen aligner trays come with built-in compliance indicators that estimate approximate time your teen spends wearing the aligners. Indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time so you can easily monitor your child’s compliance. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR ALIGNERS? Should this occur, tells the child’s Dentist right away. He or she may ask the patient to start wearing their previous set of aligners and the Dentist will order a new set of replacement aligner trays. In our office Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to 6 individual replacement aligners at no charge. HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST? The cost of Invisalign is usually slightly less than conventional braces because aligners require little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor so less time is spent at the doctors office. Over 1 million patients are now smiling thanks to Invisalign. If you would like to book a FREE* Invisalign consultation in our office please visit:
