TV show helps families with clutter chaos By Jennifer Lang Imagine yourself living in a tidy, organized home. With comfortable, clutter-free rooms. A spare bedroom that doesn’t have to be cleared out in a panic for guests. And a garage you can actually park your car in. A life without all that... stuff. Sound like an impossible dream? Maybe not. Consumed, a new HGTV Canada series that helps people like you de-clutter their homes, is looking for some new participants. Filmed in the Lower Mainland, Consumed features families who have too much stuff in their lives, and gets them to

take part in a de-cluttering experiment that helps them face their clutter problems head on. Host and storage guru Jill Pollack comes to their homes, performs an assessment, and then helps them pack up their possessions. The participants try to live the next 30 days with nothing, helping them discover how little – or how much – stuff they actually need. But producers are still actively looking for new participants – families who will agree to a de-cluttering intervention, all while the cameras are rolling. “The people who are on the show are just at the point where they know something has to be done,” says Marni Segal, one of the program’s producers. history museum, the 412,000-square-foot structure lives up to its ‘green’ claim to fame. Sporting a 2.5 acre Living Roof and water reclamation system, even the walls are insulated with recycled blue jeans. Strolling along a glass tunnel, assorted sea life swam or floated leisurely around and above me. Well informed volunteers and staff offered natural history information. Hands-on marine experiences with small sea life were also encouraged. Gingerly I stroked the golden armoured exterior of a sturdy starfish in a shallow touch pool. “They like it,” I was told. I still have no idea how to tell if a starfish ‘likes’ me. Subliminal perhaps. Across town the following day, I joined Vikki Garrod and Dianne Admire, co-owners of Carried Away, for a vintage trolley tour. These city-savvy gals custom design unconventional local adventures. History, hideaways, scintillating shopping sprees or whatever carries you away is their forte. Dogpatch and Jackson Square were our destinations. Rooted in the late 1800’s, both neighbourhoods fell victim to changing times. Today, entrepreneurs like young culinary professionals Ian Flores and Anabelle Topacio, owners of Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous, are dedicated to establishing unique businesses to revive old neighbourhoods. In addition to other treats, the couple is noted for crafting 150 blends of organic ice cream. Due to the Giants’ opening day at nearby AT&T Park, Ballpark ice cream crafted with Anchor Beer, peanuts and chocolate pretzels hit home with me. 3 Fish Studios was, however, where I wanted to stay and play. Painters and print makers Annie Galvin and Eric Rewitzer work and teach from a sprawling industrial Dogpatch loft. Excellent natural light shows off 3 Fish work by students and the relaxed owners. Artists appear to be at play here – relaxing, creating and communicating. Clearly, tough times won’t turn San Francisco tourism off. The gold rush pioneering spirit appears to be opening doors rather than closing them. Ursula Maxwell is the former editor of the Cloverdale Reporter. She now wanders, wonders, and writes.

Rugby player a ‘super role model’ From page 1

Gordon is the sort of student that teachers and coaches rave about, describing her as a “super role model”. Her assistant rugby coach praised her level-headed leadership on the pitch and passion for the sport for helping win a growing tide of converts to Lord Tweedsmuir’s rugby program. She’s a serious athlete, competing at the highest level for her age. But she’s also a serious academic, earning $5,500 in scholarship money in her home province along with cash and entrance scholarships worth $2,000 from universities in Ontario for her science fair project – news that shocked fellow grads and teammates. “You’re smart?” they asked her. “People just assume ‘geek’ when they hear, ‘Science Fair’,” Gordon shrugs. “I try and own it.” For her science project, she created a theoretical design of a home that combines existing technolo-

gies to enable patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia live independently longer. “I don’t know how many girls can openly say they were at the Canadian Science Fair,” she says. “I try to show people that you can excel in more than one area, if you work hard. Don’t let people confine you.” It wasn’t always this way. Like every teenager, she says, she went though her phase. Having survived it, she now strives to do her best. “It’s cool to be smart,” she says. “It’s cool to be intelligent and work hard in school.” She loves physics and plans to study biological sciences this fall at the University of Lethbridge, where she’ll play rugby under the direction of the same coach who’s working with the U-20 national team this July. – Rugby Canada has put up a player page for sponsors. Washington State tourism office closed the door as tourist season opened this summer. California, however, took the opposite approach to hard times. Not only did the state climb on board when San Francisco hosted 2011 International Pow Wow in May, Los Angeles will host the 1,000-plus booth mega 2012 US Travel Association media and trade show next April. With typical glitz and pizzazz, San Francisco Pow Wow 2011 kicked off with everything from reptiles on display to vodka for breakfast in the Ferry Building, a city landmark with an eclectic history dating back to 1898. Handlers from the California Academy of Sciences strictly supervised the Ursula Maxwell-Lewis reptile contingent. Wineries and an endless array of Bay area delicacies kept the humans happy. Live jazz, and a rousing rendition of California Here I Come, courtesy of a stunning apparition in pink flanked by dignitaries, left no doubt that ‘Frisco meant business. Moscone Convention Centre, a 30-minute walk from my Union Square Grand Hyatt accommodation, easily handled the three-day trade show housing 5,000 delegates, representatives of every major U.S. city, state, and attraction, plus a full international media centre. Tweeting, blogging, Facebooking and filing articles easily kept California’s travel investment airborne. Whether by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), cable car, or on foot, this city is easily one of America’s most tourist-friendly meccas. While Alcatraz, Pier 29, Fisherman’s Wharf, and other well-known guidebook highlights are obvious stops for first-time tourists, this was my first chance to wander through the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. It was worth it. If you go, take the kids. Housing an aquarium, planetarium, and a natural

More than just a game Softball invaded South Surrey and Cloverdale last week. The top echelon of female fastpitch players from around the world got grimy at the 2011 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. Within a 10-block radius of Softball City, one of the venues for the championship, bored kids in the back of a minivan could play spot-the-most-licence-plates from many U.S. states. July 8, I had a chance to attend the Shaw Youth Clinic where members of Team Canada mentored up-and-coming star softball players from our community. The experience had me reminiscing about my early softball years. It was a warm summer night in Powell River in the mid 1980s. I was about six years old and at the bottom end of the age group – the runt of team. I had aced T-ball and decided to try my hand at softball. The name of the sport itself sounded docile enough. Let me tell you, there is nothing soft about having your bony ankle smacked – at close range

– by a 200-gram projectile filled middle-age umpire. You mean to tell me that I can with compressed cork. So there I was, my first at-bat just choose not to swing and then as part of this big girls’ team. first base is all mine – and I don’t I want to say the pitcher was even have to run? That attitude is probably why tall for her age but in reality it I never liked soccer. was just the mound she was perched on; I’m a terrible Italian. her eyes narrowing Softball was really the only sport that from the under the stuck with me, and brim of her teamhere’s why: After beissue ball cap. That can do wonders for your self-esteem. It’s been 25 years since I took that first swing and I have never missed a season. I even played two weeks before my wedding, risking bruising the parts of my body not covered by the white dress. I cringed when our third baseman took a line drive in the face during that game. Making the transition from girls’ minor fastpitch to an adult recreational softball league was quite simple. Because softball is relatively slow-paced game, it entices many workplace colleagues to throw together a team. You don’t even have to be a great player, as long as you can dodge the occasional jeer from the cocky guy at shortstop who started dipping into the beer cooler during warm-up. Still not convinced about just how addictive softball can be? You would be, if you spent some time at the Canadian Open and talked to some of the 1,300 athletes who were participating. Talk about a fever pitch.

B.C. show wants to help you get rid of all that stuff From page 1

“They’re ready, or at least one family member is ready.” Turns out it’s usually one family member who gets the ball rolling while the others are dragged reluctantly along. The folks featured in Consumed aren’t exactly average when it comes to accumulating too much stuff, but they’re certainly not hoarders. “It’s just people who are overwhelmed and consumed,” Segal says. “They’re just consumed by their stuff and they’re beyond the point of knowing what to do.” So far, every episode has been different, with each family reacting in different – and unpredictable – ways. Some people find it really difficult to live without all their stuff. “Some people go into total withdrawal, depression. Other people, as soon as their stuff is gone, they feel so liberated, and so free. It’s really remarkable.” At the end of 30 days, people are re-united with their stuff, only to have to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. “They’re either totally ready to let stuff go or they’re hanging on tooth and nail,” Segal says. “It’s emotional and overwhelming. The end result is worth it, though.” In return, participants “get their life back. They’re not tied down by their stuff. These families feel a real sense of freedom because they’re not bound by this stuff that was dictating their lives and they didn’t even know it.” Any families in the Greater Vancouver area who are drowning in stuff, and who are interested in learning more about the show can contact Rachel at consumedtv@gmail.com or call 604-873-9777, ext. 251.

Ask the Dentist By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Lasers in Dentistry Q: My wife recently had LASIK eye surgery to correct her vision; the ophthalmologist commented they are now using LASERs in Dentistry to replace the needle and dental drill… Is this true, and if so, can the laser be used to complete a root canal? A: Yes, her eye doctor is correct. LASERs can now be used for both hard and soft tissue procedures in periodontal, restorative, surgical and endodontic applications. Lasers can even be used to help complete root canal treatments – for instance a dental laser does not replace the filing and shaping of the root canal, but does help with sterilization of bacteria in the canal prior to the final seal of the root filling. There are several types of LASERs being used in dentistry allowing many procedures to be done without injection anaesthesia or the use of a dental drill. Bleeding and postoperative inflammation are also reduced with the use of dental lasers – especially the new Erbium hard and soft tissue lasers that allow the dentist to modulate power (milliJoules) and frequency (Hertz) of the LASER light energy. The word LASER stands for Light Amplification Stimulated Emission Radiation. Dental LASERs utilize a non-ionizing, invisible light source in the near to mid infrared electromagnetic spectrum. Dental LASERs are gaining popularity because they are more conservative – in essence it is micro-dentistry, which treats one cell layer at a time. Using LASERs you create a secondary wound not a primary wound, sealing the lymphatic and nerve endings creating less postoperative inflammation and discomfort. Dental LASER light therapy reduces cross contamination and bacterial infections and at low level settings can be used to bio-modulate tissue and stimulate healing. With the new Hoya Versawave Erbium:YAG lasers there is now a proven

anaesthetic effect, which allows most fillings to be performed without the need for injection anaesthesia – in other words NO NEEDLES! DOES THE LASER IMPROVE HEALING? Absolutely. The very nature of LASER light energy virtually eliminates heat at the surgical site causing less inflammation and pain. The LASERs unique ability to remove the smear layer on tissue causes less inflammatory response, which allows the body to begin healing immediately – without delay. IS THE LASER PAINFUL AND WILL IT HURT AFTERWARDS? NO, LASER procedures are not painful. LASERs are less invasive and more conservative than a typical scalpel blade so reduced physical damage to surrounding tissue results in less inflammation and markedly less postoperative pain and discomfort. DOES A DENTAL LASER PROCEDURE COST ANY MORE? No. The cost of a LASER generated filling or soft tissue procedure is NO different than the cost of the same procedure done with a dental drill or scalpel blade. However, when the LASER is utilized there is typically no needle required, or numb lip to deal with meaning less time spent in the doctor’s office and appointments are shorter. I personally had soft tissue surgery done to the inside of my upper lip with a LASER – without any freezing whatsoever. I can say with total confidence that LASERs work extremely well. If you are interested in LASER dentistry please don’t hesitate to call and book a FREE consultation in our office. Dr. Willoughby holds his Advanced Certification in Hard & Soft Tissue LASER Dentistry from the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Training & the Hoya Con-Bio Company.

Break-in suspect flags down police

– Peace Arch News

Surrey RCMP on the hunt for a suspect in several vehicle breakand-enters had a little help finding their man Monday morning – when the suspect himself flagged down a police vehicle. Police say a dog team called to assist in the search arrested a man near 140 Street and Crescent Road around 1 a.m., after a pedestrian waved over a police vehicle. Several items determined taken from vehicles in the area of 33 Street and 143A Street were found on the pedestrian, police say. Investigators say it is unclear why the man waved police over. He is described as a chronic offender. Charges of possession of stolen property and breach of conditions have been recommended against a

Hit-and-run suspect arrested Two months to the day after the hit-and-run death of White Rock resident Marilyn Laursen, police announced an arrest. Cpl. Annie Linteau, with RCMP’s E Division, said on Monday that a 19-year-old Surrey man was arrested Saturday in connection with Laursen’s death May 18. Laursen, 56, was hit just before 10 p.m., as she crossed Johnston Road at Thrift Avenue. Just prior to hitting Laursen and leaving the scene, the driver had avoided a police stop. Kyle Brandon Danyliuk faces multiple charges.

While the Sombrero Galaxy (above) is a healthy 30 million light years away, Dr. Gaelen Marsden’s talk on Saturday at the Surrey Museum will address the discovery of much more distant galaxies – 12 billion light years from Earth – near the edge of the visible universe.

Astrophysicist Dr. Gaelen Marsden sometimes describes himself as a person who builds telescopes. Yet what he does is incredible: He finds galaxies that are forming stars – some 100 to 1,000 new stars each year – in galaxies far, far away. On Saturday, July 23 (2-3 p.m., by donation, pre-registration recommended), the Surrey Museum will host Marsden as he presents his work to families, to

help inspire the next generation of budding scientists. Marsden has spent the last 10 years working in rugged environments in Antarctica and Arctic Sweden, with a revolutionary two-metre telescope called the Balloon-borne LargeAperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST). “We go to the Arctic and the Antarctic for this work, because of the 24-hour sunlight, says Marsden. “But working in such remote places presents significant challenges. Despite the harsh surroundings, the BLAST project team successfully measured galaxies as they formed. The tele-

scope detected star formation that was hidden to optical telescopes. While the universe is estimated to be 13.7 billion years old, the light observed in the images took about 12 billion years to reach us, at 300,000 kilometres per second, from this early period universe’s history. Marsden is a researcher in the UBC Experimental Cosmology Lab. The successful Canadian Space Agency-funded BLAST balloon experiment in the Antarctic inspired a full-length documentary BLAST! I have pain above my shoulder and in my upper arm. My doctor says that the pain is referred from my neck. What does this mean? The nerves that supply the arm and shoulder arise from the neck. Any irritation to the nerves in the form of swelling, inflammation or increased pressure can cause pain in the region of the arm/shoulder supplied by the respective nerves. Management of this condition should focus on the following. Ultrasound, electromagnetic therapy and laser are used to decrease pain and inflammation. Ice the back of the neck for 10-15 minutes 2-3x day. Spinal mobilization, massage, trigger point therapy and manual release techniques are used to relieve muscle tension and to regain mobility and spinal alignment. Education and posture correction play an important role in restoring function and preventing recurrence of injury. Keep your neck in the midline position. Avoid working, watching TV and speaking on the phone with your neck in a rotated and tilted position. When lying down ensure that your neck is adequately supported by pillows which keep your neck in line with the centre of your chest. A gradual core stability program will help to regain postural stability in the neck, back and shoulder. A physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help to relieve the pain.

Cabin Filters: Do They Make My Breathing Easier?

Throughout the year we run our vehicle’s air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems making the air coming through the cabin vents up to six times dirtier than the outside air. Contaminants such as pollen, dust, mold, spores and smog enter through the air vents. By replacing the vehicle’s cabin air filter annually or more often in areas with heavy contaminants, motorists can protect themselves. Cabin filter’s help filter and clean the incoming air and remove allergens which can be especially beneficial to those with allergies. If a cabin filter is not replaced it can cause odors inside the vehicle, and over time the heater and air conditioner may become damaged by corrosion. A clogged or dirty filter can concentrate contaminants and cause similar or worse breathing problems to that of a person with allergies walking or riding a bike in smoggy or heavy rush hour traffic. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has a replaceable cabin filter. Voted Best Automotive

One of the factors governing the efficacy of nutritional medicines is bioavailability. Polyphenols from plants like flavonolignans from Milk Thistle, curcumin from Turmeric, catechins/eipicatechins from green DR. HENRY CHENG tea and grape seed had been found to be poorly absorbed in their natural forms. Fortunately in 1989 a group of Italian researchers developed a technology to chemically bind these water soluble molecules to a fat soluble phospholipid called phosphatidylcholine (PC). PC is the major phospholipid of the cell wall. While the original water soluble molecule is repelled by the fatty cell wall, the new hybrid molecule having been disguised as a fatty molecule is transported across the cell membrane easily. The molecule resulting from the chemical bondage of a polyphenol and a phospholipid is called a phytosome. This is a technology you can find in high end products. In addition to enhanced absorption, phytosomes offer another advantage over the crude polyphenol. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the principal building block for circulating lipoproteins and cell membranes. So, next time you are looking for a good preparation of milk thistle, ginkgo biloba, curcumin, green tea extract or grape seed extract, make sure they are in the form of phytosomes. Milk Thistle’s silymarin flavonolignans supports the liver. Curcumin is anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer. Green Tea catechins are anti-oxidant and anti-cancer. As well they have demonstrated fat oxidation effects as used for weight loss. Grape Seed catechins and epicatechins support circulation and are anti-cancer. There is now a chewable form of Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10 or Co-Q-10) that employs this technology to enhance absorption. The manufacturer Vitaline claimed that their Co-Q-10 is absorbed so fast that absorption starts in the mouth when it is being chewed. Being semi-fatsoluble, this Smart Q10® has been shown to cross
