Soup kitchen seeks permanent home

By Colin Oswin A church soup kitchen that was caught up in the demolition of the old Cloverdale mall is soldiering on, even as it hunts for a new permanent home. The Cloverdale Korean Presbyterian Church – which had run its soup kitchen out of the mall from April 2010 right up until it was demolished in the winter – has taken to the streets to offer free food every Thursday at noon in Hawthorne Square. Senior Minister Doo Je Kim says the needs of Cloverdale’s homeless, who he calls “our Friends Outside”, shouldn’t be forgotten, so the church moved the operation into the square. “The Friends Outside shouldn’t be ignored,” he says. “They are a part of us, and we cannot ignore that.” Volunteers come from all over Metro Vancouver to help out with preparing and serving the food, as well as entertaining lunchtime guests with music. It’s not just Friends Outside who arrive for lunch – Kim says the kitchen serves local students and business people as well. “We’re not just serving our Friends Outside, but all walks of life in this community,” he says. An average week will see some 20 to 30 people lining up for lunch. The food provided is delicious, with a hot meal, dessert and free coffee on tap. Everyone in attendance is treated with complete respect, and the atmosphere on the ground is jovial and fun. It’s a good time. Businesses in the area have been helping out and offering their support, and some people have brought donations of food – one person stopped by to offer fresh veggies straight out of the garden. Another local church – the Pacific Com-

munity Church located on 180 St., south of 55 Ave. – has offered to host the soup kitchen starting in the fall on a temporary basis. This will allow Kim’s organization to have a home base away from the square and a place indoors during the rainy winter. “They were quite gracious that they offered us the place,” Kim says.

The next step will see the Korean Presbyterian Church searching for a small facility to rent out that can house the soup kitchen. When that happens, the church will be able to expand the program to more days each week. Looking farther ahead, Kim would also like to see the church mount a comprehensive initiative to combat homelessness in the

area, which would include substance abuse programs and job training as well as financial and family issues and 24/7 emergency support. The ultimate goal would be to transition the Friends Outside into independent citizens working to support society. “In the meantime, we will start with what we have,” Kim says.

Ironman runs, bikes, swims to aid exploited youth By Colin Oswin Cloverdale’s own Ironman ran through town last week during his fundraising battle against sexual exploitation. Veteran paramedic Will Rogers, 52, passed through Cloverdale on July 21 as he neared the finish line on his 1,000 km trek – this leg a 490 km run from Penticton to Victoria – in support of the Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey (SAS). He also swam the Georgia Strait from Galliano to Tsawassen on June 27 (that’s 24 km), and biked from Victoria to Penticton over the Canada Day long weekend (another 490 km).

The run began on July 9 and wrapped up on July 23, with Rogers budgeting for roughly 32 km each day. SAS supports women and victimized youth who are looking for a way out of the sex trade industry. The society runs safe homes, provides schooling and life skills training, and helps sexually exploited teens rebuild their lives – building up their self-esteem and offering practical life and occupational skills training. Rogers says SAS is a great charity to support because it saves the lives of women and children and also takes them

out of the social safety net. “Exploitation like this is a huge issue in B.C., and it also creates a lot of cash flow for organized crime,” he says. “Sometimes, people are trafficked through B.C. for this very reason.” He’s ultimately hoping to sign up 10,000 people who will commit $20 a month for 24 months, raising $5 million to provide SAS with ongoing funding. It would also allow SAS to expand – or bring the program to another community. See MAJOR / Page 3

Annoyed by rude drivers? An ICBC poll suggests taking a look in the mirror They cut in without signalling, speed, tailgate, yak on their cellphones and blast their horns in anger. Lower Mainland motorists are a belligerent bunch. So says a recent opinion survey conducted by Ipsos Reid for ICBC. According to the poll, 55 per cent of residents believe drivers in their communities have become less courteous over the past five years. Forty per cent said it’s about the same while three per cent thought drivers are more courteous. Most people surveyed (82 per cent) had encountered fellow drivers who were late in signalling or didn’t signal at all – the single biggest peeve cited in the survey. Seventy-one per cent reported being tailgated, 68 per cent said other drivers refused to let them merge or change lanes and half said they’d been cut off. But there were also the bad-

(let the road rage begin) stole parking spots. Who are these motoring miscreants, these behind-the-wheel

warriors whose heated emotions can impair other drivers’ ability to concentrate and react on the road, thereby putting everyone at increased risk of crashing? Certainly not you... right? Along with drivers behaving badly, the poll also revealed an amusing disconnection: drivers in denial. While those surveyed gave their fellow motorists a “C” letter grade for courteous driving, they gave themselves a stellar “A” or “B” rating. In other words, most Metro drivers don’t believe they’re part of the problem. The late comedian George Carlin once said, “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?” Next time you get annoyed in traffic, better give that mirror a second look.

Lord Tweedsmuir’s class of ‘46 looks back

By Evan Seal When Clarence Heppel thinks back to his high school years, the former CEO of Saveon-Foods has nothing but fond memories. “We didn’t have anything, but we had a wonderful life, said the 82-year-old graduate of Lord Tweedmuir Secondary School’s class of 1946. Heppel was one of just over 40 graduates that year – 15 of which spent an afternoon last month at Northview Golf and Country Club reminiscing about childhoods spent in rural Cloverdale. In the 1940s, students attending Lord Tweedsmuir (it was called Surrey High School back then and was located on Highway 10 and 178 Street), came from all over the city, either walking up to five kilometres one way or hopping a ride from as far away as central Surrey with school bus driver Walter Huff. Graduate John Woodward can still list off all the names of his classmates, teachers and school principals with the ease and cadence of a military roll call. One thing the group agreed upon was the fun they experienced and the respect they had for their school, their teachers and their community – something they feel is lacking today. “Our parents were mostly farmers, said Woodward. “There was no graffiti at the school, no garbage, we had to work hard for everything we got.

Most worked both before and after school either on the farm or delivering the local newspaper. Many students left school in Grade 8 as a matter of economics to get into the work force. “Only a few of us made it to Grade 12, said Heppel. “To get to Grade 12 was like getting a master’s degree today. Heppel remembers the school having lots of sports but very little structure. “No coaches and teams and all that. One year, the students had to take dance lessons instead of playing basketball. “That didn’t sit well with the players, so we went on strike, Heppel said. “That’s when we had to wash the walls of the gymnasium. Classmate Elsie Preedy can’t believe how close-knit the class was back then and she credits that closeness for how Lord Tweedsmuir alumni have kept in touch for so many years. In 1946, many young men were still overseas following the end of the Second World War, so the grad class that year had few boys. Although most of those left behind were involved in both Air and Army Cadets in school, they luckily just missed the call to war by one year. Having grown up during the Depression, so many of the grads’ early years were influenced by the war effort. “It didn’t do us any harm, said Woodward.

Heritage: wrapped up

Cloverdale’s unique heritage as the gateway to historic Surrey has been recognized in an unlikely fashion – on vinyl wrapping for utility cabinets used to deter graffiti artists and vandals. In most of Surrey, the city’s cabinet wrap initiative ended up using photos from a photo competition among students and area residents, explained Patrick Klassen, the city’s beautification coordinator. “For Cloverdale, though, we wanted to do something a little more interesting, he said. Three of the cabinets are wrapped in historic Cloverdale photos from the Surrey Archives. Other cabinets are wrapped in photos of the Cloverdale fairgrounds, the Red Barn Antique store and a nearby farm. This cabinet next to the Cloverdale Bypass was trans-

formed from a painted, non-descript utility cabinet last summer. It’s all part of the city’s beautification program. Community beautification grants are available to support projects and activities that beautify and celebrate Surrey’s streets and public spaces. “We’re encouraging members of the public to submit ideas to us, Surrey’s beautification coordinator Patrick Klassen said. Suitable projects include anything that will make their street more beautiful – from flower plantings, landscaping and neighbourhood clean ups to block parties. Grants of up to $3,000 are available through the program, launched in 2010. Apply at any time – more information is available at www. surrey.ca/citybeautification.

EVAN SEAL

Fifteen members of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary’s graduating class of 1946 got together recently to reminisce at the Northview Golf and Country Club.

“We had to depend on ourselves. For fun, Heppel said “we would scrape together enough money for gas and go down to White Rock to watch the girls. One memorable trip involved travelling into Vancouver for a high school dance.

“All the boys there had suits on and here we were in sweaters with holes, Heppel recalls. “We looked like country bumpkins, but I think we had more fun. – Surrey Leader

If parents ever need blackmail photos of their children, they should bring them to this year’s blueberry pie-eating contest at the eighth annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival on Aug. 6. “These are the photos you want for when your kid gets married,” quips Carolyn Orazietti, who helps with the contest each year. It’s just so much fun. It’s crazy. People line up for it. And there’s nothing like a picture of your kid with blueberries smeared all over and glued in his hair.” Participants are given garbage bags to wear before they attempt to inhale pies freshly baked with locally grown blueberries - but it still gets extremely messy, she promises. “There is a splash zone – if you have to ask, you’ve never been at a pie-eating contest before,” she says. “Try to stay back at least 10 feet.” Usually, upwards of 40 participants, mainly children but with the occasional adult – including a professional regurgitator – enter to try to inhale a blueberry pie the fastest. “The children are all over it. Their eyes just light up, and parents are knee deep for the photo opps. It’s a technicolour display of blueberries.’” Orazietti says. Located in the Family Zone at Clover Square Village, the pie-eating contest this year is scheduled to start at approximately 10 a.m. Usually, the contests are split into different age groups and prizes are awarded to the winners, Orazietti notes.

Celebrating community: Cloverdale Blueberry Festival

CLOVERDALE’S A N N U A L

blue berry ffestival e

There’ll be hundreds of vehicles on show, from vintage rides to trucks, motorcycles, muscle cars and street rods. Plus an art festival, plenty of local entertainment, vendors, a family zone and even an antique tractor pull. And plenty of blueberries. The eighth annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival happens Aug. 6 (with a related tractor pull on the following Aug. 13-14 weekend) at venues throughout Cloverdale. It’s an event intended to celebrate not only blueberries, but to showcase and experience everything the local community has to offer, says Cloverdale Business Improvement Association executive director Paul Orazietti. “The main, umbrella event is the blueberry festival, but it’s the quintessential community festival,” he says. “There’s a bit of everything for everybody.” Events run all day, the most noticeable likely the Surrey Show and Shine, where hundreds of vehicles of all ages and sizes will be on show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Cloverdale (176 and 176A streets). Look for the shine of wax, the sparkle of chrome, the colourful custom paint jobs and the whitewall tires - the show ‘n’ shine usually draws at least 300 – and as many as 650 – vehicles, Orazietti says. He notes plenty of blueberry related items – including the United Church’s popular blueberry

pies – will be on sale alongside local retail offerings in the vendors’ market at 176 Street and 56A Avenue. But he urges everyone to start their festival experience at the Family Zone in Clover Square Village, where the Cloverdale Lions Club will be cooking up a fabulous blueberry pancake breakfast. The Family Zone offers all kinds of entertainment and activities that are especially targeted toward younger children, including free face painting, balloons, a Cinemazoo Animal Agency exhibit, mini golf, rides, games, an antique tractor display, a BMX stunt show, a junior talent showcase and live entertainers and performers geared for a younger audience. There will also be health and wellness

exhibits, a farmer’s market, and the always-fun Blueberry Pie Eating contest. “That’s always very popular,” Orazietti says of the eating event. But the family zone is “really a community zone,” he adds. More live entertainment featuring local talent and other community exhibits will also be on display at the annual Blueberry Art Festival, which happens at Surrey Museum Plaza, 17710 56A Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There, the Arts Council of Surrey hosts a juried art show/art walk and craft fair, as well as games and crafts for the kids. To get around easily, the Cloverdale BIA offers a free trolley and shuttle service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., stopping at the festival’s venues throughout the day. Plus, Orazietti notes, the fun continues the following weekend (Aug. 13-14) with a two-day tractor pull from noon to 4:30 p.m. daily at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. Guests can cheer for their favourite pre-1960 antique tractors and also enjoy live music and excellent barbecue fare. Orazietti hopes to see a good turnout at all events. “It’s a lot of fun for everyone.” Visit www.cloverdalebia.com for more information on the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival.

The wonderful, flavourful blueberry Bursting with benefits They’re sweet and tart with a pleasing firmness that releases a burst of flavour. They’re delicious raw, popped into your morning yogurt and delectably gooey baked inside a pie or scone. But it turns out blueberries aren’t just tasty. They’re also good for you. Did you know that blueberries are one of the Superfruits, packed full of health and nutrition benefits? It’s true. The little blueberry outperforms most of the other, bigger, flashier fruits in your grocery aisle. Just one 125 ml serving (1/2 cup) of blueberries is all it takes to meet your daily requirements of 7 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. In terms of antioxidant activity, they rank among the highest in tests rating 100 other foods. Antioxidants help slow the aging process and loss of brain function. Blueberries also contain tannins, which help prevent urinary tract infections. Here’s another surprising benefit of the blueberry: they contain anthyocyanin, a natural compound linked to reducing eyestrain.

Watts won’t require surgery Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts will not require surgery and has not sustained any nerve damage as a result of her accident last weekend. Watts broke two vertebrae during a horseback trail ride on Saturday. Watts was vacationing with her husband and two daughters in Kamloops when the horse she was riding began to gallop. Watts was tossed up, and came down hard in the saddle, she suffered a compression fracture of two vertebrae in her lower back. Watts slumped off the horse, falling onto the rear of another horse and then to the ground. She was airlifted to Royal Inland Hospital where she remains in stable condition. A CT scan and a subsequent MRI has shown there was no nerve damage, however she continues to be in extreme pain. Laura Ballance, speaking for the City of Surrey, said more will be known about Watts’ anticipated return to work after the diagnostic tests are complete. Ballance said she has been taken aback by the widespread public reaction to the accident. “I’ve had calls from all across the Canada,” Ballance said. “She is one of the one of the most loved politicians in the country.”

SkyTrain bridge by Old Yale Road. As the individual, who was believed to be intoxicated, crossed between the freight cars, the train began moving and killed him. Julie Senecal, spokesperson for CN Railway, told CTV News the crew, located at the front of the train, could not have seen someone trying to pass through. “There was nothing the crew could do to prevent this from happening,” she said. “It’s an unfortunate accident that could have been avoided. It’s an opportunity for a safety reminder that people should use extreme caution when crossing the tracks. This type of behaviour can lead to tragic consequences. It’s very sad.” Senecal said that the investigation by CN rail police has been completed. The young man has not yet been identified.

A mysterious sewage leak on White Rock’s West Beach Sunday caused the city to post warning notices and close the beach for swimming indefinitely. The source of the problem was cleared within hours, and the reopening of the beach and Semiahmoo Bay to swimmers was scheduled for midweek. City engineering and operations director Rob Thompson said Fraser Health planned to test for coliform counts this week. “We’ve asked for those reports to be made available as soon as possible so we can make the decision whether it’s safe,” Thompson said. Meanwhile, people who were in the water Sunday were being asked by Fraser Health to monitor themselves for any sign of gastro-intestinal problems, Thompson said, and to consult a physician if they experience symptoms. The blockage, which was fully cleared by a flushing crew by 5 p.m. Sunday may have been caused by “grease, animal and vegetable material,” Thompson said.
