Local schools to receive playground funding

By Jennifer Lang It was the sort of back-to-school news that had everyone buzzing. Parents at Adams Road Elementary are excited and relieved by last week’s announcement their school will get money to build a playground. Adams Road and another new local elementary school, Hazelgrove, are two of 44 schools that are to receive $50,000 from the province for playgrounds. “Now, we’ll be able to have a beautiful, decent playground for the kids to play in,” says Heather Harasymow, a parent of four children who will eventually all attend Adams Road. The school’s Parent Advisory Council at began actively fundraising for playground

Like other parents, Harasymow had been surprised to learn a playground wasn’t included in the $11 million construction budget – something she says will no longer be the case when future schools are built. On Sept. 2, Premier Christy Clark announced $8 million will be spent over two years to upgrade, replace or build new playgrounds in the province. Additionally, the Ministry of Education will change its capital project agreement with school districts to ensure playground equipment is included when building new elementary schools. “It’s great that we’ve got it for our school, but it’s great that they’re changing the way they do funding for playgrounds,” Harasy-

Harasymow had strong praise for SurreyCloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon – who’s also B.C.’s finance minister – for his help, along with his assistant, and Education Minister George Abbott. Harasymow and PAC president Wendy Rachwalski brought the issue to Falcon’s attention in March, setting off a flurry of email correspondence. “To have the funds now is pretty impressive,” she said, adding Falcon thanked them for bringing the matter to his attention. “Sometimes it does take the people who See FALCON / Page 3

The Class of 1956 was a well-dressed bunch. Individual years are invited to organize their own get-togethers in 2012.

fore it was torn down. The big school reunion was such a success, former students said, “We’ve got to keep doing this,” Clegg explains. At a second school reunion in 2000, the alumni association pledged to put on a celebration for the school’s 100th anniversary in 2012. As word spreads, Clegg hopes those who live in far-flung locales – some of his own classmates now live in Toronto and California – will hear about the 100th anniversary and think: “You know, I’ve been planning a trip back home to see family and friends in good, old Cloverdale, and I’ll make it next June and combine it with my school reunion.’ That’s what we’d like people to do.” The invitation goes out to anyone who attended SHS or LTS as a student, principal, teacher, secretary, custodian, or bus driver. He emphasizes no one needs to have formally graduated or walked across the stage as part of commencement ceremonies. “If they’re wondering should I go? Yes, yes, yes!,” says Clegg. The same goes for somebody who didn’t complete Grade 12 and finished their studies in night school, he says, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper: “We...don’t... care.”

Class gatherings Individual grad classes are also invited to organize their own class get-togethers or socials on the Friday or Saturday night, or the Sunday afternoon of the June 2, 2012 weekend. “Some classes keep getting together on a regular basis,” he notes. “Other classes have no core people that do it, and they don’t get together at all.” He hopes both types will be inspired to make plans for 2012. The centennial celebration will take place at the school, while reunions organized by individual

class groups will have to be located elsewhere.

It’s that connection Lord Tweedsmuir school has grown since Clegg’s day, when there were a cozy 60 students in his 1960 grad class. These days, there’s about 240 in each year, he says, pointing out that’s still small enough for students to get to know everyone in their graduating class by the time Grade 12 rolls around. Like Cloverdale, the school has retained its friendly, small-town roots, despite being surrounded with so much growth elsewhere in Surrey, says Clegg, whose three children also graduated from Lord Tweedsmuir. “You can tell I’m enthusiastic about the school today,” he says. It’s not hard to find multiple generations of LTS grads living – and working – in Cloverdale. On a recent summer morning, Clegg rounded up current vice principal Rick Hugh (Class of ‘72) and Cindy O’Brien Hugh (‘76), who works in the school office, for a photo op. The Hughs are alumni, current staff members – and husband and wife. “Both our fathers went to Lord Tweedsmuir as well, and our kids,” says Hugh, who also taught at Cloverdale Junior Secondary, which merged with LTS in 1993. “A lot of kids I taught in the ‘80s are now sending their kids to LTS.” Lord Tweedsmuir is special, he says, because it’s retained that connection to the community as Surrey has grown.

Many campuses Like many Cloverdalians, as a child Clegg can remember attending Cloverdale Elementary School at 17857 56 Avenue, which opened in 1923 (it’s now home to Cloverdale Traditional School), replacing the 1912 Cloverdale Public School next door, rechristened Cloverdale Superior School in 1917, the

year of its first graduate. Before 1912, Surrey students attended high school in Langley, New Westminster, or Blaine, WA. Students came to SHS from all over Surrey, but Cloverdale was hardly the edge of the known universe; it was a bustling centre. Some students took the bus or rode bikes to get to school while others rode horses or were whisked into Cloverdale Station on the Interurban, an electric passenger train. Still others took room and board in Cloverdale Monday to Friday, heading home on weekends.

Canadian tribute Surrey High was Surrey’s one and only high school until 1940, when the school board opened Queen Elizabeth and Semiahmoo schools. That year, Surrey High School was renamed to honour Lord Tweedsmuir, John Buchan, a Scottish peer appointed Canada’s Governor General in 1935. Buchan died before completing his term, but won great admiration from Canadians for traveling extensively and visiting so many parts of the country. A dashing adventurer, novelist and author, he championed literacy, Canadian culture, and a distinct national identity. In 1957, the Surrey School Board opened a new school up the hill on 180 Street and 60 Avenue, site of the newest incarnation of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, which opened in 1993. It merged with Cloverdale Junior Secondary School, built in 1965 and which is now home to Martha Currie Elementary. That’s a lot of schools – and lot of history. But remember to save the date: June 2, 2012. There will be more details to follow. Meantime, stay tuned for more details in the Cloverdale Reporter.

are affected to stand up and say, ‘Hey, this isn’t right.’” Speaking at the funding announcement in Delta last week, Falcon sounded as pleased, too. “Playgrounds are an essential part of a healthy and fun school experience,” he said. “I am thrilled that Adams Road and Hazelgrove Elementary schools will soon be able to provide that experience for their students,” he added, thanking the local PACs for bringing the issue to his attention.

The Adams Road school community will gather to install

the playground later this month or in early October.

Applesauce I feel close to God when I am making applesauce. Perhaps that sounds a little strange. Usually we find ourselves drawn to thoughts of eternity and of the spirit during times of hardship, when our hearts cry out for answers, when our souls are shattered. And while that is the right time to seek God, if it is the only time we call out to God, we may not be able to hear the answers we need. So, I feel close to God when I am making applesauce. Psalm 147:8,9 says that God “supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.” When I see the ripe green apples, sweet with sunshine and juicy from summer rains, I feel God’s hand – how He cared for the trees, how He unfurled their leaves and sent the bees to their blossoms. When I smell the spicy warm smell of the apples cooking on the stove, I feel how He uses my hard work to provide for my family, how He has prepared good things for me to be busy with. Instead of seeing only how I picked and chopped and cooked and pureed the apples, I look for God and I can see He is near. And so when a day comes that I need to cry out to God in pain and sorrow, He is still as close as He was on that sunny afternoon when the tang of fruit was in the air. In Jeremiah 29:12-14 God promises, “you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you”. Cultural tips for old fogeys “Bueller, Bueller... Bueller?” If you recognize that line, chances are you’re old enough to be considered, well... old. Which is exactly how you will feel reading this year’s Mindset List, put out annually by Beloit College. It’s a list of what today’s 18-yearolds know – or don’t know – about the world, based on what technological advances and pop culture references they’ve grown up with. Touchstones, they’re called. This current crop of first-year post secondary students – the Class of 2015 – were born in 1993. Which means good ol’ Ferris and Sloane from the 1986 John Hughes teen comedy are old enough to be their super uncool parents. It also means they missed out on dial-up Internet, floppy disks, and even Sony Walkmans. (By the way, does anybody know if it’s true that the Oxford English Dictionary plans to ditch the term “cassette tape” from its list of definitions? I read it online somewhere. Anybody? Bueller?) The authors say the list, now in its umpteenth year, was originally created to help their professors be

gramming since these First Years were in diapers. Speaking of babies, the Class of 2015 slept on their backs as newborns until they learned how to roll over on their own (unlike their older siblings, thanks to advances in modern parenting). The 2011 Mindset List throws down the gauntlet at Generation X, cruelly pointing out that for 18-year-olds, Andre the Giant, River Phoenix, Frank Zappa and the Commodore 64 have always been dead. While the Wisconson-based college’s list is littered with U.S. cultural references, it still provides potent food for thought for any Canadian fogeys who may be wondering how to relate to the ADD-addled, text messaging 18-year-olds of today. Here’s a sample: • They swipe cards, not merchandise. • “Don’t touch that dial!” ... what dial? • There has never been an official Communist Party in Russia. • Music has always been avail-

able via free downloads. (Which means they’ve missed out on the singular pleasure of creating a mix tape for the object of their devotion, an exercise that took hours of careful deliberation and a small amount of recording expertise.) • Frasier, Sam, Woody and Rebecca have never Cheerfully frequented a bar in Boston during prime time. • As they’ve grown up on websites and cell phones, adult experts have constantly fretted about their alleged deficits of empathy and concentration. • They won’t go near a retailer that lacks a website. aware of dated references when lecturing students (translation: so they seem less out of touch). According to the list, the class of 2015 won’t remember president George Herbert Walker Bush (Dubya’s daddy) in the White House, but they will be familiar with the garter-belt and bustier-wearing Dr. Frank-NFurter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show – viewable only at midnight screenings at downtown movie theatres for a generation of Time Warpers, but a staple of prime time TV pro-

Lord Tweedsmuir principal says cooperation has been ‘tremendous’ with older grades being phased in starting with the second period at 9:25 a.m. He noted Marriott – which is “significantly larger” in population than Tweedsmuir – is implementing the five-block system a little differently, taking the added step of setting up two lunch periods to avoid packing the cafeteria area. Tweedsmuir principal Allan Buggie said the new schedule there has lined up well. “Were not expecting any problems at all,” he said. “The co-operation has been tremendous from teachers, kids and parents.” But Johnston said that while everything is in place for the new system at Marriott, “the proof of

the pudding is in the eating. “We don’t really know how it’s going to work until the students are in school,” he said. “Check back with me in a week’s time. “We’ve got all the blocks lined up, we’ve freed up the space, the teachers are happy, we’ve given the students all the classes they wanted – but we haven’t tried all the logistics of running it.” The ultimate answer is still new school construction, he agreed. “We’re still advocating very hard for a new school in the South Surrey area, and the funding capital to reduce the stress on schools. For our parents committee, particularly, that’s a number-one priority.”

By Alex Browne Earl Marriott Secondary is keeping fingers crossed that the new five block school day is going to work and reduce overcrowding in the school as students return for the fall term. The South Surrey school and Cloverdale’s Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary are experimenting with versions of a five-block schedule to stagger student presence in a district that has seen no new school construction in half a decade. “We’re distributing the population over five blocks instead of four,” explained Marriott principal Peter Johnston last week, adding that the school day will begin with mainly Grade 8s and 9s for the first period at 8 a.m.,

Cruise-in returns

The Langley Cruise-in took a break last year.

You can almost hear the loud engines of hundreds of restored and custom cars parading down Fraser Highway. The Langley Good Times Cruise-In is just around the corner, with the show taking over Downtown Langley on Saturday, Sept. 10. After being “closed for the season” in 2010, president Riccardo Sestito and his Cruise-In committee are bringing back the event revamped and better

than ever. The 100,000 visitors who are expected can enjoy hundreds of hot rods, street rods and antique cars lining the streets of the Downtown Langley core, along with familiar Cruise-In food and entertainment and even some new attractions. But with a year off to reflect on Cruise-In’s past, some new changes are now being implemented, including the cancellation of the Friday night cruise to the Twilight Drive-in Theatre in Aldergrove.

Falling for football

LESLIE MCKELLAR PHOTO

There was a huge turnout for last week’s football camp at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School. The annual sports camp is run by parents, ex-football players and fans. It’s open to Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary students in Grades 8 to 12 of various experience levels. Volunteers say they enjoy giving back by teaching teamwork, discipline and the fun of sport.

Test drone takes to the skies By Jeff Nagel RCMP are testing an aerial drone that can hover over crash sites and crime scenes to take photos or beam video back to officers on the ground. The remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle should help crash analysts get better, faster images to reconstruct what happened. RCMP Insp. Norm Gaumont, head of traffic services in the Lower Mainland said it will allow police to reopen roads to traffic faster after crashes than when a helicopter has to be called in. “Sometimes we absolutely need an aerial shot of the scene and we keep the road shut down longer than we need to,” Gaumont said. “This fits in a suitcase and we can have it flying in minutes.” The Draganflyer X6 – built by a Saskatoon firm – costs $30,000,

weighs just one kilogram and can carry either a digital still camera or a high-definition video camera. Officers are permitted to fly it at altitudes of up to 175 feet and at speeds of up to 30 kilometres per hour. The lower altitude means it can also get much more detailed images than helicopters. An officer on the ground can wear video goggles and see what the drone sees. “There are a lot of potential uses for this technology but it will not

be used for any type of surveillance,” Gaumont said. Similar drones are already used by police in Saskatchewan and Ontario. Gaumont said the RCMP here will test the unit for one year before deciding whether to buy one. Some defence industry analysts have predicted the era of manned combat jets is ending – the U.S. F-35 fighter now in development will likely be the last new design before military drones take over entirely. But Gaumont said he doesn’t foresee that happening anytime soon with police drones shouldering aside helicopters such as Air 1. “These things are very light and there are a lot of limitations,” he said of the Draganflyer. The testing will determine how accurate it is and how the craft performs at night or bad weather, he added.

Batting in the right direction Contributed Ball players in the Lower Mainland Baseball Association raised thousands of dollars this summer, in their second year of partnership with Canadian Cancer Society and Ball Park Sports Inc. The 32 teams – who use pink wooden bats during Mother’s Day weekend – brought in a total of $5,570. This year, the Cloverdale Minor Fastpitch Association joined the fundraising team, raising more than $1,000. The girls and boys of Cloverdale also swung smaller pink wooden softball bats for their campaign. Next year’s fundraiser is still in the planning stages, with three more minor ball associations joining. All softball and baseball organizations are invited to take part, and can do so by emailing merv@ ballparksports.ca.

Split classes explained Combined classes have academic and social benefits, research shows Contributed Combined-grade classes – or split classes – are a reality in many school district, including Surrey. While originally structured to respond to the challenges of fluctuating enrolment, class size and class composition, research reveals there are academic and even social benefits to this classroom model, and children in combined-grade classes do as well academically as children in single-grade classes. Combined-grade classes consist of students in two consecutive grades grouped together

in one class. They are common both locally and internationally, with one out of every five Canadian students enrolled in a multigrade classroom. Research has shown that combined classes: • Allow students learn from one another; • Provide models for younger students; • Help older students see what they’ve already learned; • Provide opportunities for a greater range of learning; • Encourage students to work together; • Promote social responsibil-

ity; • Help students to become independent; and • Foster a positive attitude toward school. Students in combined classes are not held back to the level of younger students, nor are they expected to handle work beyond their ability. Whether a child is gifted or needs considerable assistance, each will be challenged to excel as much in a combined class as he or she would be in a singlegrade class. – School District 36
