Research and treatments have changed significantly in the 31 years since Terry Fox inspired a country, due in no small part to the $500 million-plus raised since then by the Terry Fox Foundation, much of it through the annual Terry Fox Run held every September. “Terry realized how many people were affected by cancer when he went to the Cancer Agency in Vancouver for chemotherapy after having his leg amputated,” Alison recalls.

“It was seeing how many people it affected. When he saw other kids having to have this treatment, it hardened his resolve. He said, ‘We have to do something about this.’” The “something” became Terry’s Marathon of Hope, in which he set out to run a marathon every day until he’d crossed all of Canada, raising both awareness of cancer and money for research. Tragically, his cancer returned and the journey he’d begun in Atlantic Canada ended near Thunder Bay, ON, in 1980. “At that point a lot of people weren’t even talking about cancer,” See EVERYONE / Page 3

Coupon books only benefit elite Students and local businesses suffer while people who can afford to pay full price get discounts To the editor; If your school is in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission or Surrey, and are using some of these coupon books, did you know the majority of the merchants are in Vancouver? So, you end up supporting Vancouver merchants. Did you know that an average return to schools or non-profits is only 10 to 18 per cent of funds raised, so if a school or non-profit has raised $4,500, parents would be out $25,000. The only ones who really love these coupon books are the small group of elitists who want to get things like 50 per cent off luxury hotel rooms or fancy restaurants in Whistler. Sadly, these are the same small group of elitists that can afford to pay full price. And students are paying for it and local businesses are suffering for it.
To the editor, One sign of a humane society is how we react when introduced to something unexpected and unwanted. The recent discovery in Surrey of a raccoon found stuck in a leg-hold trap and the subsequent public discussion shows us a number of things. First of all, it is completely understandable that when one discovers an unexpected and unwanted critter under their deck or in their shed the initial reaction is to get rid of it – for

Secondly, the reaction by those who have compassion for animals gives us a clear example of how even though a certain species is not wanted there are better ways to deal with the situation. The call for a ban on leg-hold traps is one example of providing more protection for raccoons. Although difficult to confirm the numbers, there is another species in Canada that currently lacks protection under the law. The understand-

Local teen gives back By Evan Seal Victoria Barker felt she had some extra time on her hands this summer – time she felt could be best used giving back to her community. So on Aug. 27 she held a car wash in Cloverdale. The 15-year-old Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student raised $525, which she donated to the Salvation Army for back-to-school supplies. Reading through a long list of supplies needed
by one little boy, Victoria quickly fills up a bag full of paper, pens, erasers, and glue stick among other things. “I didn’t have any plans this summer,” said the shy, bespectacled teen, “ so I felt I would try to do something positive.” She spent one recent day handing out the various back to school essentials along with brand new backpacks to nearly 50 kids.

Emotional rescue It’s been described as a therapy that shows you how to dig yourself out of a hole of misery and despair. The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a combination of ancient Chinese therapy and modern psychology that involves tapping pressure points on the body to release blocked emotional energy. Stress relief specialist Sheryl Stanton presents an upcoming introductory seminar on EFT. The True Cause of Your Problems and How to Eliminate Them is a three-hour session that aims to help participants understand the true causes of their stress, fear, and anxiety. Stanton says the world tries to address addiction and self-destructive behaviour without resolving the underlying emotional problem that caused it in the first place. When the source of the pain is addressed, the person no longer needs to engage in their addictive behaviour to numb their pain. Stanton, an RN with 38 years in the field, has studied complimentary health and healing, and calls EFT the most powerful tool she’s found to eliminate negative emotional conditioning. Most people blame others for their stress, she says.
“The truth is that most of us are completely blind to the true causes of our problems,” she says. “That knowledge is buried in our subconscious or below conscious mind. And it is our subconscious mind, with its negative emotional conditioning, that controls us. The cost is $20 for those who pre-register and $30 at the door. For more information, visit www.sherylstanton. com/events.html.

By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD
Q: My daughter is 16 years old with very crooked teeth. She is a beautiful, outgoing young lady but self-conscious about her crooked smile. I am afraid if I don’t have her teeth straightened it could impact her self-confidence and the way others perceive her. I’ve heard there are new technologies to help straighten teeth without the need for metal braces. What exactly are my options? A: You are correct when you say a crooked smile can have a dramatic impact on her interaction with others; this is a known fact. It can also create difficulty in proper brushing and flossing; can lead to tooth decay; abnormal wear on teeth/tooth mobility; tension in chewing muscles; clicking and popping in jaw joints; headaches and TMJ pain. Not to mention accumulation of plaque and calculus – which leads to gum disease and eventually bone loss and lack of tooth support... You are making the correct decision to help your daughter straighten her teeth. In recent years an alternative to metal braces called Invisalign has become popular with teenagers and adults. It helps patients of all ages feel confident in their smiles and themselves. The Invisalign system is actually a series of clear plastic virtually invisible aligner trays, which gradually move teeth to achieve a great smile and proper bite. By using a series of clear, removable aligners that are changed about every 2 – 3 weeks, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth towards the smile you’ve always wanted. The aligners are made of a hard clear plastic and are removable, allowing easy brushing and flossing for proper hygiene. Additionally, regular dental check-ups and cleanings become easier since the aligner trays are popped out for improved access – quicker, faster, more thorough visits. This is the single biggest advantage over metal braces because often accumulation of plaque and calculus around standard brackets can lead to decalcification of surrounding teeth and appearance of unsightly white decalcification spots on
teeth. Another distinct advantage is that removable trays make an active lifestyle easier to accommodate. When you are playing sports or an instrument there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums. IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES? In the hands of a skilled practitioner and when worn according to doctors recommendation, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment. HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEARING HIS OR HER ALIGNERS? Teen aligner trays come with built-in compliance indicators that estimate approximate time your teen spends wearing the aligners. Indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time so you can easily monitor your child’s compliance. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR ALIGNERS? Should this occur, tells the child’s Dentist right away. He or she may ask the patient to start wearing their previous set of aligners and the Dentist will order a new set of replacement aligner trays. In our office Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to 6 individual replacement aligners at no charge. HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST? The cost of Invisalign is usually slightly less than conventional braces because aligners require little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor so less time is spent at the doctors office. Over 1 million patients are now smiling thanks to Invisalign. If you would like to book a FREE* Invisalign consultation in our office please visit:

Earthquake rattles B.C. south coast By Jeff Nagel A magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck Friday off the west coast of Vancouver Island did no damage but left residents across southwestern B.C. trading stories of what they felt. The quake hit at 12:41 p.m. and was centered about 100 kilometres west of Tofino at a depth of 22 kilometres, according to Natural Resources Canada. Many residents in the Lower Mainland felt nothing, but others report feeling something like a helicopter passing overhead or the reverberation of a passing freight train or construction equipment. There are also reports of swaying buildings, signs and wires in parts of the Lower Mainland and employees ran out of some stores in Cloverdale. Residents on Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, say they felt the quake strongly.
“I was sitting at my computer and the whole house shook — the floor, the roof, everything, Bowser resident Gail Carr said. “Even the hanging plant was moving in the kitchen. Carr ran outside and waited to see if more quakes would come.
Employees ran out of some stores in Cloverdale.
The main quake was followed by more than 100 aftershocks, one as large as 4.9. The quake was triggered by movement of two ocean plates that meet at the Nootka Fault. “It’s pretty small, SFU geologist Brent Ward said. “People should have felt this on the west coast of Vancouver Island. People in Gold River

and Zeballos would have felt it the most. No tsunami warning was issued. The harmonics of how the quake wave interacted with certain tall buildings may have been a factor, he said. “I suspect many large buildings were just at the right height to start swaying back and forth to the vibrations of the earthquake wave, he said. A similar-sized quake that was shallower and closer to the Lower Mainland could have been very destructive, he added. The earthquake that levelled Haiti in 2010 was a magnitude 7 quake 13 kilometres underground. Ward noted Vancouver Island was damaged when a 7.4 quake hit close to Courtenay in 1946. “It caused quite a bit of damage, he said. “It broke a lot of chimneys. Building facades cracked
and fell into the street. And there were quite a few landslides. Seismologists say the quake isn’t likely a precursor to a massive megathrust earthquake that’s expected to eventually hit the region. Nor is it likely, Ward said, that this modest quake has relieved stress and made future ones less likely. Emergency coordinators say it’s a wake-up call for families to make preparations for future disasters. Telus spokesman Shawn Hall said there was minor phone network congestion on parts of Vancouver Island immediately after the quake, causing delays of a second or two to get a dial tone. In future disasters or incidents, he said, people should avoid making calls unless it’s critical. Hall suggested people make one call to a relative or friend outside the affected region – in
another part of B.C. or Canada – and have them relay a message to other family members. That relaxes the load on the system, leaving it clear for emergency calls. – Black Press, with ďŹ les from Parksville-Qualicum News

The change only affects TVs that receive over-the-air signals through an antenna – and even they can still be used if paired with a digital converter. But Craig Wisehart, program director of the Electronics Stewardship Association of B.C., expects it means more people will upgrade and cast off old TVs. “We think more of these will end up in the end-of-life category,” he said. “We don’t want them to end up in a landfill somewhere.” The agency that coordinates the electronic waste pickup and recycling system in B.C. is urging anyone with an unwanted set to dispose of it responsibly by taking it to a depot. The broadcast signal change took effect in late August in major markets but has been deferred in smaller, rural communities. Even before the switch, Wisehart said e-waste depots were al-

ready noticing a 15-percent jump in the volume of old TVs or computer displays arriving compared to last year. He says the Vancouver Canucks’ playoff run may have been a factor, spurring hockey fans to upgrade their TVs and recycle older models. “We did see a spike,” he said, but added it’s hard to pinpoint a specific cause. People are becoming more aware of where to take dead or unwanted electronics, he said,

B.C.’s depot system now gets about 20,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year and has collected 55,000 tonnes since it was launched four years ago. Minor football The following are results from the Sunday, Sept. 11 games for the Cloverdale Community Football Association, who play in the Vancouver Mainland Football League, or VMFL.
Bantam division Cloverdale Leopards: 0 Abbotsford Falcons: 19 Highlights: Although the Leopards lost 19 – 0 there was a definite improvement in our defense. Zac Blouin, Chase Goldney, David Dinbandhu, Val Ingaldson had good games on the defensive side. Manveer Duhra and James Davies were strong as Offensive and Defensive lineman. Not only did Zac Blouin have the biggest block against him he had the best play on defense chasing down a wide
Sports scene receiver to stop a touchdown. Ricky Park and David Dinbandu had some big gains on running plays but the Leopards were unable to sustain their gains to put the ball in the endzone.
Jr. Bantam Cloverdale Cougars: 8 North Surrey Falcons: 32 Highlights: The Cougars tried hard but were unable to stop the Falcons. Andrew Murison, Bruce Balfour, David Burchart, Shawndeep Padda and Lukas Stevens provided great blocking. Great defensive plays by Jasman Basra, blocking a convert kick and an interception by Jaden Wutke. Drey Blair (pictured above) ran down for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Pee Wee Cloverdale Lynx: 0 North Surrey Cardinals: 44 Highlights: Troy MacDonald made two 10-yard-runs right up the centre. Jordan Kelley made several good runs getting first downs and prevented a field goal by grabbing the ball before the Cardinals’ kicker was able to kick it.
Treh Bhullar made a 15yard run passing four Cardinals from a pass that Kaiden Lilley threw. Kaiden threw the ball to Gabriel Fenelon, which in return made it to the five-yard line. Joshua Reed made three sacks and prevented a field goal. Cloverdale Bobcats: 16 Coquitlam Cougars: 0 Highlights: Great touchdown saving tackle by Jaden Simon. Hard run resulting in a touchdown by Derek Best. Onside kick recoveries by J.T. Blafour and Morgan Sandford. Big tackles by Kojo Odoom, Trey Jones, Cole Irwin and Cam Kumar. Q A
How much are closing costs?
You should allow approximately $1,500 for legal fees to have a lawyer convey the transaction to your name with the B.C. Land Titles Office. You’ll also need to budget for adjustments to the taxes and sewer/water. This could be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand depending on the property and time of year. Finally there is the Property Purchase Tax.(PTT). This Provincial tax applies to all transfers of real estate and it is payable by the purchaser on the completion date. The PTT is 1% on the first $200,000.00 of the purchase price and 2% on the balance.

Cloverdale Lions: 9 Coquitlam Lions: 15 Highlights: The Cloverdale Lions unfortunately had the same result as last Sunday. However, the team played much better and the results showed in the score. except for two big plays, the game was played between the 40yard lines with each team containing the other. Zach Siegemund and Alex Thorton were outstanding with five QB sacks and Kyle Dodd delivered many big hits from the linebacking spot. The offence made some big gains and continues to get better. Cloverdale Panthers: 50 Royal City Hyaks: 12 Highlights: The Cloverdale Panthers beat the Royal City Hyaks 50-12 in their home opener on Sunday. Terrel Jones, Walker Erickson, Jaeden Reid all scored touchdowns, while Taran Birdi and Dante Vatkin added two each. Jones, Reid, Erickson and Nathan Sawyer were all successful in their extra point attempts. A fumble recovery by Kurtis Smythe and great tackling by Sawyer, Smythe and Noah Anderson led the defense.
Flag division Cloverdale Cheetahs: 15 Coquitlam Packers: 3 Highlights: Jace Atkinson had a great day running the ball. Jamie Fuchs and Brandon Ballance had an outstanding defensive game getting a ton of flags. – Contributed

Sprained Ankle
Q A
I sprained my ankle playing sports. What does this mean and what can I do? A sprain generally refers to an injury of the ligament, which attaches bone to bone. It is characterized by pain, swelling and limited mobility of the ankle joint. SELF HELP MEASURES Rest- avoid walking on uneven terrain, running, jumping or any activities that aggravate the pain Ice- the ankle 2-3 times per day for 10-15 minutes to reduce pain and swelling. Compression- use a tensor/ankle wrap to provide support and sensory awareness to the ankle joint. Elevate- the ankle by placing a pillow lengthwise under the knee, leg and ankle. Physiotherapy modalities i.e. laser, ultrasound and magnetic therapy serve to promote healing and decrease pain or swelling. Manual therapy i.e. joint mobility and massage help to regain mobility and prevent or breakdown scar tissue. A rehabilitation program will help to regain strength, balance, full function and a safe return to sport/recreational activities.
